Having won the first Twenty20 International, hosts Australia will look to keep up the tempo to secure a morale-boosting series win against the second-ranked side in the format.

Australia v India
2nd T20I
Melbourne Cricket Ground
Friday, 23 November 2018; 18:50 local, 08:20 GMT

Australia's fortunes, across formats, has been on the downward slope in recent times – their last big win came in a T20I triangular series featuring New Zealand and England in February. Since then, Australia have struggled, the unavailability of David Warner and Steve Smith, as well as Cameron Bancroft, hasn't helped.

But Australia seem to ironing out their issues with the bat. In the first T20I in Brisbane, a number of their batsmen chipped in with solid contributions against arguably India's best limited-overs bowlers in Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Kuldeep Yadav.

Aaron Finch and Chris Lynn set the foundation at the top with a brisk 40-run stand. Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis too made big runs to take Australia to a truly challenging total.

The only hiccup for Australia was in their tackling of Yadav's left-arm wrist spin. They looked all out of sorts against his canny variations, unable to pick the googly. Both Finch and Lynn fell prey to him, and Australia will want to be better prepared against him.

India should be pretty happy with how their top bowlers performed, but equally concerned about the newcomers – Khaleel Ahmed and Krunal Pandya. After a great first spell, Ahmed began spraying the ball around and was taken apart, while Pandya never quite seemed to get into any rhythm at all – 55 runs were smashed off his four overs. It will be interesting to see whether India ring in changes in that department.

Australia's bowling remained a bit of a concern too. Leg-spinner Adam Zampa produced the goods with a spell of 2/22, but the quicks were all quite expensive. Australia will be particularly worried that right-arm quick Andrew Tye was taken for 47 runs off his three overs. As a bowler who is able to bowl a number of variations, he has the arsenal to keep batters quiet in T20Is, but his accuracy was poor. He will want to make amends.

Barring Shikhar Dhawan, India's top-order batsmen had a rare off day. Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli were removed cheaply. Dhawan scored 76 before healthy efforts from Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant took India to within four runs of victory. Pant has shown tremendous promise, but will need to make those starts count. Were he not dismissed for 20 with India in sight of victory, the outcome would probably have been different.

India have the artillery to fire back and level the series, and they're not too displeased with their efforst in the first game. "The way we played, it was an interesting game. Also, it was our first game (of the tour), so we'll learn to bowl better on these wickets," said Dhawan afterwards.

Australia, however, will hope to keep them quiet as they eye an elusive series win, one that will boost their confidence. "Things haven't gone our way, but we know we're still a good side," said Stoinis. Australia will be keen to give a good account of their quality again.

Marcus Stoinis made an impact in both departments in the first game Marcus Stoinis made an impact in both departments in the first game
Key players

Marcus Stoinis (Australia): The all-rounder is shaping into a very reliable cog in the Australian set-up. He made an impact in both departments in the first game, scoring a fantastic 33* before chipping in with the key wicket of Karthik and then also getting rid of Pandya. He was a tad expensive, but Australia won't mind that if he continues getting the wickets.

Rohit Sharma (India): In the past, the opener has had a gala time in Australian conditions, and there's reason to believe that he will come into his own again despite a failure in the first game. His style of play benefits from the extra bounce of the Australian wickets, and if he gets going, together with Dhawan he could wreak havoc.

Conditions

The onset of summer seems a bit delayed in Melbourne, with temperatures still looming at under 15ºC. There is also a possibility of showers marring the iconic MCG's first game of the international season. The pitch has generally been quite batting friendly in limited-overs cricket, and one can expect a lot of runs again.

Freezing cold in Melb and lots of rain don't think there will be any play, 9 degrees now will get even colder.

God save us

India already looking good to surrender another SENA tour!

Australia got lucky in the 1st match. Even after numerous cardinal mistakes, drop catches and chances, India only lost by 4 runs. So it shows the gulf between 2 teams. Real India turning up today, fun over for few here :uakmal

I don't know if this Australian team can win 2 consecutive matches against any team baring Bangladesh.

It's such a pathetic lineup consisting of brainless batsmen, who don't have any match awareness. Their style of play doesn't take into account match situation, pitch conditions, field placements or oppositions' plans.

Happy to see Manish Pandey as a substitute fielder. Hope he continues to serve his country as a substitute fielder for as long as he can and hold on to some brilliant catches like the ones he caught of Sarfaraz in Asia Cup. :D

Badly need him in the field.

Once again kohli showing what a poor captain he is, all common sense would point to not bowling khaleel unless necessary and we pay by chasing min 130 where that was the max they would have gotten just an over ago.

India needs to improve fielding standards or else this is going to be a long and depressing tour.

Waiting for all those people to come up with the answers 'Pant is young and he will get better as a Wicket keeper from here on.' ;)

To everyone picking on the next left arm bowling God khaleel, don't you folk know he was hand picked by zaheer himself. What do you guys knows, so what if he has shown nothing in his bowling to show is anything but average but don't you know how many wickets zaheer has how many do any of you have?

Why Ben McDermott bats at no.6? He shouldn't bat below no. 4. He isn't a go-to player. Takes a little time and is worth watching. Guy has good potential

Harsh reality is Hardik is India's 3rd best pace bowling option in LOIs even if he's limited. These Khaleels, Kauls and Chahars are simply not international standard players.

His batting in the last two T20s and his keeping tells me he's a bit mentally inept

So India will miss the win again! The target could be something like 120 in 12 overs....!!!!

Khaleel is alright. He's just played a handful of games. Kid's got variations and skill. Kaul and Chahar are just useless.

Not sure what skills and variations you are talking about. He's constantly going for over 10 RPO spells in every match with one or two wickets. Unadkat can do that too. How different is he?

I think they will add 12 to 13 more runs and give India a target of 145 in 20

His first three overs were decent. One of the boundaries in the 4th over was an edge. After getting that tap in the last game, he was pumped at the beginning of the game here. Shows good attitude and aggression. Has a good slower ball and can swing the ball. Only 20 years old and there are no decent left arm options in India. Kid is priceless in that context

35,000 empty seats and the first T20i failed to register in the Aussie TV ratings at all.

India only seem to appeal to ethnic Indians in Australia, but the move of cricket to Pay TV is reaping the same ratings disaster in Australia that it did in England.

Totally wrong assessment. Numbers were even weaker for the four SA matches last month.

So what you're seeing is the result of sandpaper-gate. The Australian public are still miffed about that and many haven't yet come back to watch/support their cricket team.

UPDATE: Play set to resume at 9:03pm local time.

The match has been reduced to 19 overs per side.

India will be chasing a revised target of 137 from their 19

100,000 is the capacity in the G. Even if we consider 35k empty seats (no proof of that), meaning 65k in the stadium? :broad

Yep. They said it's close to 60k. Apparently majority are Indians and it looks like a home game for India

PAY TV will ultimately destroy the game in australia. Its practically decimated the game in the UK. They are now trying to spend money to get to kids in the inner cities and the south asian community but watching the game is the best way to get kids enthusiastic about it. I'll be honest I have to motivate my son to play and I know he wont really play all his life but its a good game for us asians to get into as it provides good exercise and other benefits. Plus he's a brit pakistani and all brit pakistanis should know how to hold a bat. lol.

On a serious note I dont own sky sports. It just costs too much for me and I cant justify it. If I did cricket would be a bit more visible in the house. I still remember the 2005 buzz..it was so refreshing seeing non cricket fans talking about cricket..if they continue to keep it behind a pay wall it will continue to be a sport for the priviledged.

I saw how the priviledged looked at me when he had his first tournament last year. (he tried hard but the level was above him.). Matthew Hoggard came on the final day and the parents completely ignored him. Too good for even him. And I wasnt exactly in rags etc. Just the snobbish attitude was so prevalent. This then translates into children's behaviour and it was a test for my son. Strangely enough a team from india participated and they mobbed hoggard lol...

Target is 90 runs from 11 overs. Safe to say rain again made the equation tough for India. They would hv cruised to victory in a 20 over game.

Can't blame drs here, if kohli had a single gray cell in his head he would have bowled bhuvi and have khaleel bowl only when it was absolutely unavoidable.

True. That was pathetic captaincy considering he had the same issue in the first game. 90 in 11 is very steep. DLS strikes India

Game called off.

Lucky break for Australia. Series would have surely been squared today.

LOL you went missing during SA series which had a total of not even 50000 seats filed across 3 ODIs!
1st ODI- 25000
2nd ODI - 18000
3rd ODI - 5500

TV ratings were 1/3rd of what was expected due to pay walls and lack of promotion.

Here CA has sold 120K+ tickets for 3 T20s.

Rain screwed us again. It would hv been an easy chase for India. It really hurts that we are 1-0 down even with a much superior team. But a test series win will ease this pain I guess.

What in the world are you talking about ? India vs Australia is only on fox sports it is not on Local Aussie channels. If you dont have Fox sports you dont see the match most aussies dont have Fox....

35,000 Empty seats at the G ? MCG you mean ? That means there was 70,000 plus there, you dont even get that these days in India in any cricket match

...

Also think aussies are fair weather supporters after years of amazing teams now they aren't great fans ignoring them same is happening 8n rugby union

Khaleel has been exposed, don't know what special people find in him
Neither has he done anything special in doemstic cricket apart from SMAT which is a 2nd string t20 tournament in the country
Don't see him lasting long if he continues like this

Rain washes out second T20I as Australia hold 1-0 lead

India restricted Australia to 132/7 from 19 overs in the second T20I of their three-match series before rain forced the match to be abandoned.

Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to bowl as India looked to get back on track in the series after losing the first T20I by four runs on the D/L method.

They couldn’t have enjoyed a better start as Aaron Finch departed for a golden duck, edging behind to a Bhuvneshwar Kumar delivery.

Chris Lynn’s search for a substantial score on the international stage continued as he could only muster a run-a-ball 13 before holing out to Krunal Pandya from a Khaleel Ahmed slower ball.

The young left-arm seamer’s work wasn’t done there, as he struck in his next over, as D’Arcy Short dragged a length ball onto his stumps to have Australia in a difficult spot at 35/3 after 5.3 overs.

Marcus Stoinis departed soon after, finding Dinesh Karthik at deep point from a short and wide ball from Jasprit Bumrah. India’s bowlers continued to choke the Australian batting, with Glenn Maxwell bowled by Krunal Pandya as he struggled to replicate his powerful striking from the first match of the series, finding the boundary only once in his 22-ball 19.

Ben McDermott was Australia's guide through the rest of the innings, finishing with 32 from 30 deliveries. Nathan Coulter-Nile, who came into the side after Billy Stanlake injured himself in the warm-ups, struck some hefty blows in a cameo of 18 from nine balls.

The Australian batting was able to find some rhythm in Ahmed’s last over, as McDermott combined with AJ Tye to take 19 runs and hurt the 20-year old’s figures, as he finished with 2/39 from his four overs.

Rain led to a premature end to the Australian innings, and constant showers saw India’s target revised on a number of occasions before the match was finally called off.

Australia will enter the final match of the series at the SCG with a 1-0 lead.
