National selectors on Friday confirmed Pakistan’s squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021, which will be held in the United Arab Emirates from 17 October to 14 November. Pakistan is in Group 2 and will open their campaign against India on 24 October at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

From the squad that was announced on 4 September and after taking into consideration player performances and form, the selectors have made three changes.

Sarfaraz Ahmed and Haider Ali have replaced Azam Khan and Mohammad Hasnain respectively, while Fakhar Zaman, who was originally named as a travel reserve, has swapped places with Khushdil Shah.

The decision on Sohaib Maqsood’s inclusion in the squad will be made following medical advice. The top-order batter underwent MRI scans for the lower back after the 6 October National T20 match against Northern and missed Thursday’s Punjab derby against Central Punjab.

Pakistan’s 15-player squad (in alphabetical order):

Babar Azam (captain, Central Punjab)

Shadab Khan (vice-captain, Northern)

Asif Ali (Northern)

Fakhar Zaman (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa)

Haider Ali (Northern)

Haris Rauf (Northern)

Hasan Ali (Central Punjab)

Imad Wasim (Northern)

Mohammad Hafeez (Central Punjab)

Mohammad Nawaz (Northern)

Mohammad Rizwan (wicketkeeper, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa)

Mohammad Wasim Jnr (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa)

Sarfaraz Ahmed (wicketkeeper, Sindh)

Shaheen Shah Afridi (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa)

Sohaib Maqsood (Southern Punjab)

Traveling reserves – Khushdil Shah (Southern Punjab), Shahnawaz Dahani (Sindh) and Usman Qadir (Central Punjab)

Player Support Personnel: Mansoor Rana (manager), Saqlain Mushtaq (interim head coach), Shahid Aslam (assistant head coach), Matthew Hayden (batting consultant), Vernon Philander (bowling consultant), Cliffe Deacon (physiotherapist), Drikus Saaiman (strength and conditioning coach), Abdul Majeed (fielding coach), Talha Ejaz (team analyst), Col (retd) Muhammad Imran (Security Manager), Ibrahim Badees (media and digital manager), Dr Najeeb Soomro (team doctor) and Malang Ali (Masseur)

Chief selector Muhammad Wasim: “After reviewing player performances in the highly-competitive National T20 and in consultation with the team management, we have decided to include Haider Ali, Fakhar Zaman and Sarfaraz Ahmed in the squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021.

“The three in-form players bring with them wealth of experience and talent, and provide further stability, balance and strength to the side.

“It must be tough for Azam, Khushdil and Hasnain for missing out but they still have a lot to offer in their careers. They are in our future plans as a lot of cricket has to be played post the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 and in the lead up to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia.

“I am pleased with the intensity and high quality of cricket that we have witnessed in the National T20. It has not only provided the players excellent match practice in the lead up to the UAE competition, it has also given us the opportunity to closely monitor the player progress and then make decisions that are in the best interest of the side for what will be a cut-throat tournament.”

Shoaib Malik could replace Maqsood if the later does not retain full fitness

Hopefully this team;

1. Babar
2. Rizwan
3. Haider
4. Hafeez
5. Nawaz
6. Fakhar
7. Imad
8. Hassan
9. Wasim
10. Rauf
11. Shaheen

Still a bad squad.

Sarfraz would only play if Rizwan gets injured, thus, Sarfraz should had been a reserve. We are wasting a placed in the 15 squad

Would had prefered Zahid Mehmood in place of Usman Qadir in the reserve.

Not sure about Shahnawaz Dhani, want to see him play but he is in the reserve. I think he should get a warm up game

Iftikhar Ahmad could had been a great inclusion. We missed out on that.

But thank god no Khushdil and Azam in the main squad

Don’t know why sarfraz is there

Fahkar was a no brainer , and I’d rather take a punt if haider compared to the alternatives

The bowling is an issue, looks damn week and there is no dept in fast bowling. Haris Rauf is already a disaster

Sarfaraz's inclusion is really good. Has been very calm and focused in this tournament. This has reflected in his own performance (Batting+WK) and overall teams performance.
Since this tournament is in UAE, plays spin well, he can serve the team well in this tourney and then say goodbye & retire from the format.
Can still serve in other 2 formats particularly in tests.

Hopefully this team;

1. Babar
2. Rizwan
3. Haider
4. Hafeez
5. Nawaz
6. Fakhar
7. Imad
8. Hassan
9. Wasim
10. Rauf
11. Shaheen

Too many pace bowlers imo, you only need 3 max. Mohammad Wasim only gets into the team if Hassan Ali isn’t playing, I’d bring in Asif Ali and play him at 7.

I see Haider has regained his spot in the national side

But will he ever regain that lost front tooth of his?

I find it very interesting that Rameez has been meeting lot of businessmen in Karachi to invest money in Pakistan cricket for last couple of days and all of a sudden Sarfaraz Ahmad finds himself in the plane to UAE.

Good to see Azam ,Hasnain and khushdil out . All 3 have been poor

Good changes, Sarafarz and Fakhar's experience will come in handy, that is a very good decision. Haider Ali is in such good form, it is always wise to pick the inform player ahead of an out of form player. It works.

The only dissappointment is Dahani is in the reserves and not in the main squad, but good thing that he is at least travelling. Going by the condition of pitches it will not be a surprise if Pakistan play all three of Imad, Shadab and Nawaz and pick just 2 fast bowlers, so overall it is still OK to have Dahani in the reserves.

The team looks good as per Pakistani standards. We seriously dont have anyone else to bank on. This is the best squad atm.

Good to see Azam Khan being dropped, despite Rameez having good terms with Moin. Good example of keeping personal likings aside in professional work.

Sarfaraz has been good in National T20 cup. Also he is a better keeper than Azam Khan in case Rizwan is injured and his experience can be handy for Babar to lead the team.

Azam was 2 decent knocks away from maintaining his spot lol. He was just so poor that he couldn’t be retained.

How poorly is Hafeez going to perform? I am assuming pretty mediocre. I would rather take Malik.

And then Sarfaraz is another wasted spot. You can't play him as a specialist batsman - nor should you.

So he will praying for Rizwan to get injured or something.

Businessmen couldn't care less about Sarfaraz Ahmed, he's quite irrelevant.

All the hype around his successful captaincy died when QG got absolutely hammered in the PSL.

Excellent to see Sarfraz and Zaman be selected.

Sarfraz is a very good player of spin and needs to be in the 11, with Rizwan going to the outfield means the fielding gets stronger and chances of some run outs.

Haider ali shouldn't have been selected, instead should have gone with Ifthikhar.

Ifthikhar plays spin very well and has the added bonus of handy offspin.

Would have taken Haider only after Zaman, Sarfraz, Ifthikhar and potentially, Sharjeel.

Sarfraz will only play if rizwan is injured but he deserves it more than azam khan

This is a better squad. Asif Ali should have been sent on his way for someone like Iftikhar Ahmed.

With Fakhar Zaman back in the mix, you've essentially got a floater who can come in when he is needed. He is terrible against finger-spinners but good against leg-spinners.

I'd fix Haider Ali at #3, he should be allowed to come out and play freely as he has done in the National T20 Cup. That doesn't, however, mean that he gets to play braindead shots.

My squad, which I'd play for all encounters, is:

Babar Azam (c)
Mohammad Rizwan (wk)
Haider Ali
Sohaib Maqsood
Mohammad Hafeez
Fakhar Zaman
Imad Wasim/Mohammad Nawaz
Shadab Khan
Usman Qadir
Hasan Ali
Shaheen Shah Afridi

Saj I don't see Razzaq's name in the Support Staff. Has he been removed?

He's done way better than azam khan in every department

Good job Wasim, finally selections makes some sense..

Only one of Asif ali, Azam Khan and Khushdil shah can be there as a power hitter...

Azam and Khushdil were very poor in this national T20.. Rightly discarded,,

Malik should have been added in place of Asif ALI, but dont mind Asif being there as hitter, but im not sure he will get a game..

Pakistan should go with the following lineup, and have a great chance to win the tournament.. The positions 3,4,5,6 packed with tremendous six hitting powerhouse + down the order 7,8,9,10 also can smack a few..

 1. Rizwan
 2. Babar
 3. Fakhar
 4. Maqsood
 5. Haider Ali
 6. Hafeez (best position for Hafeez to bat and highest % of chance for pakistan to win the tournament. At this position he will only have an option to go smash every ball, and one of the best timers of cricket ball)
 7. Shadab
 8. Nawaz
 9. Imad
 10. Hasan Ali
 11. Shaheen Shah afridi.

I'd be happy if the team looks like this

Fakhar
Max/Haider
Babar
Rizwan
Hafeez
Nawaz
Shadab/Imad
Hasan
Waseem Jr.
Rauf/Dahani/Qadir
Shaheen

It's not the best but that's what we have. If they try to elongate the batting and play batters outside their spots they will just mix things up.

p.s. If Max is unfit, then Malik is the only replacement in our system. We really need to develop youngsters like Nasir Nawaz, Hassan Khan, Qasim Akram, Mobasir Khan to replace Hafeez and Malik from the team.

They picked haider due to maqsood injury they both may stil play thou.

Well done to wasim and ramiz on the changes.my only worry is that if maqsood is injured they should have picked another batter in the reserves.

My xi
Babar
Rizwan
Haider ali
Hafeez
Fakhar
Maqsood
Imad
Shadab
Hassan Ali
Wasim Jnr due to his batting ability
Shaheen

Both maqsood and Haider make my squad and batting til 10.hafeez will have to bowl 1-2 overs.

Finally! some good changes. Sarfraz can be the first choice keeper and bat in middle order and Rizwan can be the opener and outfielder. Fakhar will probably play in middle order and it will be a tie between Fakhar and Asif at 6. If Maqsood's reports do not come good, then he will probably be replaced by Malik.

Pakistan can go in with more and better combinations now on the field. I would like to see how the following team combination performs:

Rizwan
Babar
Haider
Hafeez
Maqsood/Malik
Fakhar
Nawaz
Shadab
Hasan
Rauf
Shaheen

On more spinning wickets, I'll play Imad in place of Rauf.

Hasnain is regressing at a rate of knots and has rightly been dropped. Although Dahani has some weaknesses in his game, he is a good prospect and a better bet than Wasim at this stage. Overall sensible changes

1. Fakhar
2. Rizwan
3. Babar
4. Haider Ali
5. Hafeez
6. Sarfaraz/ Maqsood
7. Imad
8. Shadab
9. Nawaz/ Wasim (depending on pitch if we need a fast bowler or spin conditions)
10. Hassan Ali
11. Shaheen

There you have it. Batting lineup till number 10 and bowling options of 3 fast bowlers and 3 spinners including Hafeez or 2 fast bowlers and 4 spin bowlers if Nawaz plays instead Mohammad Wasim

Good squad imo which has the potential to win world cup barring Asif Ali

What has Sarfraz done to be in the squad? How has his performance been in the domestic T20 tournament?

1- Babar (c)
2- Rizwan
3- Haider
4- Maqsood
5- Hafeez
6- Sarfraz (wk)
7- Imad
8- Nawaz
9- Hassan Ali
10- Shaheen
11- Haris

Shadab shouldn't play.

Sarfaraz is needed in case (God forbid) Rizwan gets injured.

Plus, our spin playing ability leaves much to be desired so Sarfaraz may play a critical role if he gets into final XI.

Solid squad. Good luck to them! Let's see how far can we go!

Glad to see Haider in and Azam out, otherwise is a decent squad. Sarfraz just being in the dressing room is worth something, if anyone knows how to motivate a team through a major icc tournament it's him.

How can a batsman (Haider Ali) replace a bowler (Mohammad Hasnain)?

Sharjeel is unfortunate to miss out although he is averaging 30+ with 145+ strike rate as an opener in current T20 tournament.

He should be in the reserves then, we are effectively going in with a 14 man squad

I agree or maybe they are looking to play him as a wicket keeper batsman and Rizwan just as a batter.we could be going in with 13 man squad if maqsood is injured

The thing with sharjeel is he can't play in any position we're fakhar can.

Why can't a bowler be replaced with a batter ?

Usuallly its a change of like to like (bowler replace bowler, batsman replace batsman, wk replace wk).

This new change of replacing a bowler with a batsman means the selectors originally screwed up by selecting an extra bowler instead of a batsman. They should be admonished for screwing up

Haider ali is in the squad due to maqsood who is proberly 50/50 and the only obvious choice was Husnain who literally everyone stated he shouldn't be in the squad.

Still very thin on batting. Only 3 solid names in Fakhar rizwan and babar

Two more changes desperately needed.

Dahani in place of Nawaz.
Sharjeel in place of Sohaib

After these three changes not much to complain about here. Perfect choice of squad, Saifi over Malik is okay choice. As Malik won’t play in the team just look at past 10 years he’s done jack.

My Xi now is

Babar
Rizwan
Sohaib
Hafeez
Haider
Fakhar
Imad
Shadab
Haris Rauf
Hassan Ali
Shaheen

May be take sohaib out and and add Mawaz at 6.

Good changes. Excellent Squad.

I think Mohd. Nawaz will be the dark horse, with his all-round capabilities.

Dahani wasn’t given a go against a poor zimbabwe or South Africa team so I dont expect the selectors to change their minds now. No brainer to get fakhar in, sarfraz better choice than azam but only plays if rizwan is injured, and haider hasn’t done much of note since his knock against England so he needs to step up.

The thing with sharjeel is he can't play in any position we're fakhar can.

yeah if Pakistan cannot play its #1 T20 opener as an opener in national T20 team then I agree that he should not be selected in the squad

This is also unprofessionalism ny rameez raja that squad was announced and changes were made

He has been performing well in the national cup seems like his brain isn't as scrambles as much

Definitely he proberly did deserve to be in the squad but Ramiz proberly but a big NO to his name

I think the squad is strong enough to go all the way and even win the tournament.

Sarfraz can dictate things from behind the stumps and it's actually Babar who was vouching for his inclusion, not the performances as there were others performing better in this tournament.

Only thing missing is Sharjeel, I remember Dr. Noman said a week ago that Rambo has been instructed to include Fakhar by someone not related to cricket and and that his inclusion is guaranteed regardless of form (See : 88 runs, 4 matches, 117 SR).

It looks a much better squad than before

Id still have had Iftikar instead of Asif Ali and Dhani instead of Sarfraz

With the current squad I would like to go with this team
Babar
Rizwan
Haider
Fakhar
Maqsood
Hafeez
Imad/Nawaz
Shadab
Hassan
Wasim jnr.
Shaheen

Good changes for the game against India I would play this squad.

1. Babar
2. Rizwan
3. Haider
4. Hafeez
5. Sarfaraz ( can drop down if few overs left).
6. Fakhar
7. Imad
8. Nawaz
9. Hassan
10. Afridi
11. M Wasim.

Good to see Fakhar and Haider in. Haider still has to prove at intl level but looks to be in form in NT20.
Would have liked to see Sharjeel, Malik and Faheem in the 15 instead of Asif and Sohaib Maqsood, and M Wasim.
In reserves, replace Khushdil with Iftikhar/sahibzada and maybe Dahani with Wahab to provide some experience.

Khair, decent squad. This would be my XI for India:
Rizwan (wk)
Babar (c)
Fakhar
Hafeez
Haider
Asif
Shadab
Imad
Hasan
Haris
Shaheen

Better squad then the last one

1. Mohammad Rizwan (wk)
2. Babar Azam (c)
3. Mohammed Hafeez
4. Sohaib Maqsood
5. Haider Ali
6. Asif Ali
7. Hasan Ali
8. Shadab Khan
9. Mohammad Nawaz
10. Mohammad Wasim
11. Shaheen Afridi

He is a better opening option than Rizwan. Prove me wrong from this national cup

He's a fixer, I'm happy if the new admin is strong in this regard.
All for sending a clear message that wrongdoing will not be tolerated.

Then I hope this management also had nothing to do with all names mentioned in the Qayyum report.

Overall, still a poor squad and team. Just hope they punch above their weight due to the rallying cry from RR after the security row.

For all his lack of skill, I'd still prefer Shoaib Malik over Asif Ali who is even more mediocre. Really hope Hafeez turns up for his big farewell tournament. Majid Khan

Sharjeel should be in - if Shoaib Maqsood is ruled out. This boy adds nothing apart from 8 or 10 runs. However, if Sharjeels gets in the groove then the game is over for the opposition.

I don't see Razzaq's name in the Support Staff. Has he been removed?

Razzaq was appointed on interim basis as assistant coach only for NZ and Eng series.

Now with Philander and Hayden coming in as consultants, it would have been too much of support staff.

Looks a better squad from batting experience point of view.

Interestingly Hasnian has been replaced with a batsman in Haider. Considering the expected surfaces in UAE, possibly a fair call.

This is a better squad. Asif Ali should have been sent on his way for someone like Iftikhar Ahmed.

Babar Azam (c)
Mohammad Rizwan (wk)
Haider Ali
Sohaib Maqsood
Mohammad Hafeez
Fakhar Zaman
Imad Wasim/Mohammad Nawaz
Shadab Khan
Usman Qadir
Hasan Ali
Shaheen Shah Afridi

Good squad but too many spinners. M Wasim should play instead of Usman Qadir as he is also a good hitter. Nawaz i think should play ahead of Imad.

My team:
1. Babar
2. Rizwan
3. Haider
4. Hafeez/Sohaib
5. Fakhar/Asif
6. Nawaz/Imad
7. Shadab
8. M Wasim
9. Hasan Ali
10. Shaheen
11. Usman Qadir/Haris

1. Rizwan (WK)
2. Babar (C)
3. Sohaib/ Haider
4. Hafeez
5. Fakhar
6. Nawaz
7. Imad
8. Shadab
9. Hassan
10. Rauf/ Wasim
11. Shaheen
