BENGALURU: Three people were killed while few others others sustained injuries after police opened fire at them in KG Halli in East Bengaluru in the violence that erupted over an offensive post on a social media platform. 110 people have been arrested after several policemen were injured as mobsters pelted stones at them. The city is put on high alert following the unrest.

Heavy police deployment has been made in KG Halli and DJ Halli following a violent mob attacked policemen and torched police and civilian vehicles. It all started over an offensive post put on a social media platform by one, P Naveen, purportedly a relative of Pulikeshinagar MLA Akhanda Srinivasa Murthy.

Raged over the post, about 15-20 people attacked the residence of the MLA in Kaval Byrasandra on Tuesday night. While attempts to torch the house were thwarted by the police, hundreds of people gathered in front of KG Halli and DJ Halli police stations.

He and his family escaped unhurt, when the mob torched his house in Kavalbyrasandra in DJ Halli police station limits.

Before the police could mobilise enough staff, the mob started pelting stones at police vehicles and torching vehicles. As many tried to set fire to police stations, the police resorted to lathi charge and lobbing tear gas shells.

Several policemen were injured while police vehicles were torched and vehicles of senior police officers were damaged. As the KSRP platoons, which were called in to contain the situation, advanced towards the rioters, they were pelted with stones from rooftops. At this juncture, the police had to lob tear gas shells.

When the mob did not budge and intensified their attack targeting police and their vehicles, the cops fired in the air as a warning shot. However, the mob was in mood to pay heed to the warnings.

Finally, the police had to resort to ‘Golibar’, killing one and leaving 3-4 others injured near KG Halli police station. The situation is still tense in the area and more police forces are being pressed into service.

Amidst violence, MLA Akhanda Srinivasa Murthy appealed to the people to maintain peace and legal action will be taken against the person, who allegedly posted the offensive post.

Following the incident, Chief Minister ** Yediyurappa spoke to Home Minister Basavaraja Bommai and instructed him to take all necessary steps to contain further spread of violence. Bommai, who confirmed a death in the police firing, said that people must maintain peace and those who resort to violence will be dealt with an iron fist.

Congress MLAs BZ Zameer Ahmad Khan, Rizwan Arshad and others visited the spot and appealed to the public to stay calm. Police Commissioner Kamal Pant and other senior officers have camped in the area.

A senior police official said that prohibitory orders as per section 144 of the CrPC was already in force across the city due to COVID-19 pandemic but decision will be taken for more stringent restrictions based on the situation.

Naveen, who allegedly posted the offensive post, stated that his Facebook account was hacked and also appeared before the police soon after violence broke out.

DJ Halli is Bengaluru’s communal nerve centre and is considered one of the most sensitive areas comprising of Tannery Road, Shampura; is adjacent to KJ Halli and connects to Nagwara on one hand and Davis Road, Frazer Town and Coles Park on the other end.

Before the lockdown, Bilal Bagh in DJ Halli had become the anti-CAA and NRC protest site on the lines of Shaheen Bagh in Delhi.

New Delhi: At least two persons were killed and several others were injured as police opened fire on mobs that attacked KG Halli and DJ Halli police stations on Tuesday night, protesting a ‘derogatory’ Facebook post by the nephew of Congress MLA R Akhanda Srinivas Murthy.

Around 60 police personnel, including as additional commissioner of police, have been injured in the clash which broke out in the evening. Hundreds of people gathered outside Srinivas Murthy’s house in east Bengaluru’s Kaval Byrsandra area and started pelting stones. They set the cars parked there on fire. Reports said that police did not initially want to file an FIR. The MLA’s nephew, meanwhile, claimed that his account was hacked and he had no idea about the ‘derogatory’ post, which now stands deleted.

As things escalated towards the night, several politicians took to social media and appealed for peace.

Senior Karnataka Congress leader Dinesh Gundu Rao also tweeted, “Horrible situation in Pulakeshinagar after the attack on our MLA Akhanda Srinivas’s house and the Kaval Byrsandra Police Station. Whatever the provocation nobody can take law into their own hands and destroy public property. The first priority is to bring things under control.”

110 people have been arrested in connection with the violence that broke out in Bengaluru over an alleged inciting social media post, Sandeep Patil, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Bengaluru, said. The nephew of the Congress MLA has also been arrested.

They don't learn anything from prophet life.. They're keep giving bad names for Muslims..

BTW there should be social media censoring.. These types of things spread through social medias..

The Prophet pbuh prayed for people to be on the right path after they threw stones at him at Taif. So clearly not following his path.

But the same people on the other side (Hindus) kill people on rumors of beef being sold so they haven’t exactly set the best example. It always takes two to tango.

Let’s see if this becomes a full scale riot but seems like police has come down pretty hard

At least three people have died in southern India's Bengaluru city after protesters clashed with police over a provocative social media post about the Prophet Muhammad, police have told Reuters news agency.

Violent protests gripped parts of India's tech hub late on Tuesday after thousands took to the streets over the controversial Facebook post by a relative of a local politician, local media reported.

"The situation is under control," Bengaluru City Police said on Twitter, adding that police fired live ammunition to disperse the crowd after using tear gas and batons.

TV channels showed a group of people gathered outside a police station and clashing with officers, burning several police vehicles. The videos showed the group later trying to force its way into the police station, and another group gathering outside the politician's house shouting, throwing stones, and setting fire to vehicles parked along the road.

Mufti PM Muzammil of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind appealed for calm, saying that police had taken action against the provocateur.

Protesters blocked fire engines, and some media personnel were allegedly attacked, according to reports.

"Accused Naveen arrested for posting derogatory posts", Police Commissioner Kamal Pant said in a tweet, adding that 110 people had been arrested for arson, stone-throwing and assault on police. Several police officers were injured, he told TV reporters.

A curfew was imposed in the surrounding area to restrict movement, police said.

"We are investigating the issue and will make use of the CCTV footages to see who is behind these violent acts, and will take stringent actions," Karnataka state Home Minister Basavraj Bommai told a local TV news channel.

Srinivas Murthy, a member of the state legislature, whose relative reportedly posted the insulting remark, has called for peace in a social media post.

"... I request our Muslim friends, for the mistake of some miscreants, let's not fight. Whatever the fight, we're brothers.... I request our Muslim kin to please remain peaceful. I will also stand with you," he was quoted as saying by the newsminute.com website.

Meanwhile, R Ashoka, a state minister, told the same news channel that attacks on police and media would not be tolerated.

"What kind of people attack the police? The media? The local police have been given a free hand to deal with the situation," he said.

A senior leader from the opposition Congress party in the state, Dinesh Gundu Rao, also appealed to people not to take the law into their hands.

"If anybody has written anything objectionable the law will take its course and there are so many ways in a democracy to fight for justice," he tweeted. "But Violence is not the answer."

This is just sad and horrible to see how easily people get triggered and pick up arms for.

This offensive FB post was put by Congress MLA Srinivas Murthy's relative. Post this tweet, MLAs house was attacked and police station was put into fire. SDPI leader Muzamil Pasha is being arrested for inciting this violence.

It will be interesting to see how liberals/NDTV/Ravish Kumar etc spin this news considering Congress is involved.

The only one spinning the news is BJP buoysss as we can see in the post mentioning Nasserudin.

The Prophet pbuh was an arab and arab culture has marked differences from Indian one. Indian Muslims are Indian first, and as we all know, in subcontinent mob violence is ingrained in their culture. So we could even presume that you should not expect much less from true Indians other than lynch mob mentality.

Wasnt Charlie Hebdo in Paris was attacked for similar reason? So the problem is not with sub continent culture or Indian lynching mentality. Its something else which both you and I know about.

These are random incidents and shouldn't be looked as a norm. When it comes to India anyway then we all can say 'sab changa si'. :inti

The irony is just amazing. On other threads you play down weekly/monthly mob lynchings done by extremist Hindus by saying that India has a lot of people so people being beaten/killed for eating meat or for not chanting Hindu slogans isn’t anything to worry and not representative of India/Hindus.

But here you are linking this incident to another attack that happened nearly a decade ago to try to imply that Muslims/Islam are the problem lol. Surely even you can see the irony.

I am not linking this with anything and was responding to the poster who was equating this attack with Indian/Sub continental cultural issue.

As far as irony is concerned, only 13 posts in this topic reveals it all. Lol.

Btw, you have nothing to say on the attacks and death of 3 people?

Mob violence is a subcontinental issue, I said this in a previous thread which was about the sectarian violence in Peshawar as well, so don't think I am just being biased against India or Hindus.

I was so taken by the irony in your post that I forgot to comment on the news. Anyways on topic obviously the attack is wrong and from what I understand goes against Islamic teachings as well.

But just to make sure, I am assuming your views on this attack are the same as your views on the lynchings that happened for allegedly eating beef or not chanting Hindu slogans?

He is correct. Such news is common from India and each time you give the excuse that India is a huge country and such incidents will happen and magnified and that it isn’t a country wide problem.

And now we got a muslim group protesting and it’s an issue with all Muslims across the world lmao.

So very ironic and certainly hypocritical.

As for the last question. I’m sure he will as I do condemn the killing of the three protestors by the police.

I actually missed that part, thanks for pointing it out. Indian police really needs to learn to deal with protests without resorting to killing. Obviously if the protesters were involved in violence/arson they should have been arrested but the police seems really eager to kill. I believe they did the same in the Delhi protest.

As heavy handed as the US police is even they managed the BLM riots without killing people.

India is a pressure cooker of religious friction. As an outside observer these seem to be increasing rapidly in frequency. For patriotic Indians who are not RSS inspired Modi bhakts this should be a huge cause for concern.

Irrespective of religion, riots cannot be allowed. This was Congress MLA’s nephew..

Pakistan on Wednesday strongly condemned an anti-Islam post that an Indian extremist had posted on Facebook causing an outrage in the country, a statement from the Foreign Office said.

"Pakistan has conveyed its strong condemnation to the Indian High Commission in Islamabad on the reported incident involving a derogatory social media post against the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) by an extremist from the majority Hindu community in Bengaluru, Karnataka," the statement read.

According to Indian media, at least three people were killed during clashes with police in the Indian city overnight over an anti-Islam post that sparked protests in which a police station was attacked, and a politician's house and vehicles were torched.

Unable to quell protesters using batons and tear gas, the police personnel opened fire as they risked being overpowered during the violent unrest in a Muslim-dominated neighborhood, the southern city's police chief told Reuters on Wednesday.

Police gave the first name of the accused man as Naveen and said he is the nephew of another Congress politician, whose house was attacked and burnt in the violence.

Facebook did not immediately comment on the issue.

The Foreign Office in the statement said, “The offensive post against Islam has hurt Muslims and reflects the rising Islamophobia and targeting of the minority communities in India.”

"The Indian police instead of preventing such crimes against Muslims and Islam, used brute force and killed at least three protesters, and injured many more. As an added injustice, the Muslim community in the area is being falsely framed for alleged vandalism and assault on police personnel," it said.

The rising incidents of religious hate crime in India are a direct and inescapable consequence of the RSS-BJP combine’s extremist ideology of "Hindutva", it said, adding that the incident was viewed with concern and the civil society in Pakistan has called for justice for the minority Muslim community in India.

"Pakistan has called upon the Government of India to investigate the incident and take immediate action against the perpetrators of religious hatred," the FO said.

It also called upon India to ensure the safety, security and well-being of the minority communities, particularly Muslims, and take steps to ensure prevention of hate speech and hate crimes against Islam and protection of religious rights of Muslims.

"The international community, the United Nations and relevant international organisations should play their role against the rising tide of Islamaophobia in India and ensure practical steps for the protection and religious rights of minorities in India," the statement added.

Looks like BJP is a sitting duck against new Pakistani establishment’s Intl narrative Political games, we should just employ ex Congress Babus and play the geo political game which Congress clearly excels at.

Well played to GOP, hoping we get back our capability in next 3-4 years.

A group of Muslims formed a human chain around a hindu temple in Bangalore riot area to prevent the mob from damaging the temple..this group was bigger than the rioters...that was heartening news..

In this age of made for social media optics, I don't take such well co-ordinated acts of goodness seriously.

It’s seems like the police killed 3. How many more would you have liked them to kill?

As many as it takes to ensure people learn to, next time, limit their outrage over religion.

I'd say the mobs got away lightly after doing this to a police station. All based on rumours that the nephew of the MLA who made the post on FB was hiding in the station.

Pathetic from all concerned. However the bloody sanghis have made everything so communal in India that it doesn't take much to incite riots in India these days.

I see bloody bhakts still defending this....When will they learn? Its our own country and they are dismantling it brick by brick, for what? Just to see their beloved god to be in power forever!

Baton-wielding police have patrolled barricaded and deserted streets in parts of the southern Indian tech hub of Bengaluru, after three people were killed in Tuesday night clashes triggered by a Facebook post offensive to Muslims.

A police official said an emergency law prohibiting gatherings had been imposed in Bengaluru, a city of 12 million people known as India's Silicon Valley.

The violence began late on Tuesday, with mobs pelting stones, burning vehicles and setting a police station on fire, and lasted until the early hours of Wednesday. Dozens of people were wounded.

"Seeing that much fire, smoke and the violence was really scary. I was really frightened. We've only seen such things on TV," said Ahan Khan, a college student who lives near the police station in northeast Bengaluru.

Police said the person responsible for the offensive post, which has since been deleted, had been arrested. A spokesman for Facebook said it was investigating, adding its standards prohibit hate speech and incitement to violence.

The state government headed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday ordered an investigation into the worst violence in the city in more than 20 years.

Gatherings prohibited

Bengaluru Police Commissioner Kamal Pant said his officers had initially tried to hold back around 1,000 protesters using batons and tear gas, but then opened fire.

"The police had no escape and they had to resort to firing and three people died," Pant said, adding that 110 people had been arrested for alleged vandalism and attacking the police.

The three victims were Muslim men aged between 19 and 21, said Rizwan Arshad, a Congress party legislator in Bengaluru, who reached the police station amid the violence on Tuesday night to appeal for calm.

A medical officer at the government-run Bowring hospital said they had treated at least 27 injured policemen and 12 protesters, including three who had suffered gunshot wounds.

Police gave the first name of the accused man as Naveen, and said he was the nephew of a Congress politician, whose house was attacked and burned in the violence.

The politician, R Akhanda Srinivasa Murthy, appealed for calm in a video message carried by media.

"We're all brothers. Whatever crime has been committed, let the law teach them a lesson," Murthy said. "I appeal to our Muslim brothers and everyone else to maintain peace."

Television channels on Tuesday night showed a group of people gathered outside a police station, clashing with officers and burning several police vehicles.

On Wednesday afternoon, charred remains of several cars and motorcycles were strewn across the basement car park of DJ Halli police station, the facade of which was also scarred by fire.

Nearby streets were lined with burned vehicles, with all shops shuttered along the nearly two kilometre-stretch where the police station is located.

"We are investigating the issue and will make use of the CCTV footage to see who is behind these violent acts, and will take stringent actions," said Basavraj Bommai, home minister of Karnataka state, where Bengaluru is located.

Wonder if we will ever see a time where people stop getting offended over every little thing.

Good that the police came hard on them. But those deaths were unfortunate.

These kinds of idiots are an insult for our faith and religion.

On a related note .. India should get rid of its blasphemy law, it's a retrograde concept that has no place in the modern world. On this issue, it should follow the path of the US which has unffettered freedom of expression.

Blasphemy law is not the problem, the lack of implementation is. Every other day I see my religion mocked on social media but where is justice? I never harmed anyone or insulted other religion, so why do i have to face this humiliation? How will I answer Him in my after life? That I kept quiet when others insulted my Supreme God?

Don't worry .. there is implementation ..your God is being protected as well by the courts. Do you endorse this?

After 43 days in Odisha prison, Abhijit Iyer-Mitra walks free

Iyer-Mitra, who was behind bars since October 23 over his tweets on 12th century Jagannath temple and 13th century Sun temple since September this year, was granted bail by Orissa High Court on Wednesday after the Odisha Government decided not to accord sanction of his prosecution and withdraw all cases against him.

There should be some punishment to act as deterrent. I don't support death for blasphemy. Just a month of incarceration is fine.

I could have sworn you were pro-religion in the thread about bakra eid. What brought about this marked change of "faith"? :moha

I'm pro-religion as long as people understand to keep it to themselves. I'm not in favor of religion playing any role in government, sports, schooling etc. Let people practice whatever religion they want to practice as long as it does not have an impact on anyone else.

It just irks me when people get together and start rioting or creating a ruckus on religious issues. If you don't like something, ignore it. If you like something go ahead and practice it. Just keep your religion and your faith to yourself.

Behaviour quite unbecoming of first world Bangalore.

Don't think it would make much difference unless you swapped the populations with US as well to be honest. India's laws are as good as anywhere, but when someone feels their sentiments are hurt then laws and police are less effective than bricks and sticks.

Let me understand this, some goondas beating up a guy for eating beef in some remote UP village reflects on entire Hindu community,RSS,BJP,Modi,India etc etc but this is a reflection of a few idiots who do not stand to the tenets of Islam and this is a law and order situation.

I think any one who violates the law is a criminal and an idiot however it does take two to tango to have a balanced perspective indeed.

Interesting, I always thought the American Police and their supporters were extreme. But even most of them didn't call for mass murder when the BLM protesters' set a police station on fire. Obviously if the protests gets out of hand, people should be arrested or made to disperse but killing should really be the last resort.

The behaviour in the 'real first world' USA during the BLM protests was far worse.

Since when did economic growth become the remedy for baser human instincts and ignorance?

Pretty much. People have lost faith in the the existing law and order and are taking action into their own hands. If something like an FB post is leading people to lead a riot and its causing deaths then its an incredibly dangerous society to live in.

On other threads you were arguing that victims should just chant and do what ever the Hindu extremists mobs want them to do as that would save their lives. Going by your own logic, shouldn't people just take down offending post and apologize to keep the mob at bay? .

Too many simpleton posts.

People are more sensitive to religous abuse when people from your religion are being targetted with violence which leads to death.

Muslims aren’t sick of Islamaphobia because some want to attack their faith, they are sick of Islamaphobia because it incites hatred which leads to people being attacked and murdered.

Indian Muslims should defend themsleves.

uberkoen implied that if Muslims just give into the violent mobs and do whatever they want , the mobs would leave them alone. So I was just curious to why he wasn't applying the same logic here? Never said I agreed with his logic.

I am not sure why you got all worked up and thought that I wanted the guy to be hung lol.

That’s Bangalore police for you. Don’t care whether you are a Hindu, Christian, Buddhist, muslim no one is above the law.
swift arrest of instigator, rioters and situation in control.
Feel sorry for those who wanted to debate more on this latest news and create more communal divide, the police have almost taken them to cleaners LoL

Different situation. Nonetheless, equally stupid. People need to learn to keep their religious sentiments to themselves.

On other threads you were arguing that victims should just chant and do what ever the Hindu extremists mobs want them to do as that would save their lives. Going by your own logic, shouldn't people just take down offending post and apologize to keep the mob at bay? .

I wasn't arguing anything in that thread. I was asking a question. I was wondering if this is all they want just do it and save your life as Taqiyya is allowed in Islam and people have been using the concept for centuries to save their lives.

Not sure what that has to do with this. It's two completely different things.
