Asia Cup in UAE from Sept 13-28
Emerging Cup in December in Pak/SL (co-hosts)

Confirmed

It left me a bitter taste in mouth - why UAE? That too at the start of the season! Now, games will be a mud feast where side batting first will enjoy 100 runs handicap.

At least, I hope the hosting right is with BCCI, so that their groundsmen can manhandle UAE curators to teach few tricks on making wickets and maintaining outfield.

Emerging Cup is probably 2nd best solution after arranging whole tournament in one country - I would have loved to see Nepal or Afghans hosting the Emerging tournament. Now, I guess IND & BD will be slotted in SRL leg.

Well if this news is true we can ascertain one fact, BCCI are losing clout.

Let's if BCCI have the backbone to pull out from the Asia Cup now.

Lets see what is response of bcb playing in pak and bcci on their respective issue of playing in uae

First time Bangladesh will play in UAE in ages !

Weather will be a bit hot and humid though

India never really serious about hosting Asia cup as last time they hosted was in 1991,irony is which Pakistan pull out siteing political tensions in that edition but arguing now that politics must be separate from sports 😂😂

India will play emerging nations in srilanka and may be Bangladesh may also follow up ,any way is it any different from now, srilanka ,Afghanistan is already playing in Pakistan, biggest breakthrough will be Bangladesh agree to play in pakistan

Actually the Abu Dhabi Sheikh had written a letter to BCCI asking them to allot the Asia Cup to UAE. The recent goodwill that Modi's visit to UAE had created in the relations between both countries and the strategic importance that UAE plays in the middle east had made Modi Govt to be receptive to this demand. So, Indian Team is 100% gonna play in UAE. And, this be the full support and aashirwad of GoI

Asia Cup dates are from Sept 13 - 28.

Our 5th test with England is from Sept 7-11. I wonder how India will send a full strength team to this tournament after a 3 months long tour of England. We may end up playing the team that played Nidhas trophy in SL.

Mate im sure the ruler of Abu Dhabi has got alot of better things to do then write love letters to BCCI asking them to play cricket in Abu Dhabi.

Infact his football team Man City is about the win the premier league and is in the semi final of the champions league so i doubt he is sitting there writing letters to GOI and BCCI when all three organisations have got better things to do.

Agree but chances are very bleak i think india partcipation of asia cup will be subject to government clearance

Crown Prince and Modi are on extremely good personal terms so govt clearance wont be an issue.

The prince personally wrote to bcci

Asia cup in India would have been better, better atmosphere. What a shame. Cricket is a small sport and made even smaller by politics.

Man City is likely to be knocked out from the quarter finals of the Champions League by Liverpool tonight :))

Makes sense, but does it not contradict BCCI's previous statements that they wouldn't play Pakistan in the UAE due to the bookies?

September is the rainy season in many parts of India and cricket matches held at that time have a very high probability of getting washed out. It is good that the tournament is being held in UAE.

This will be the next hot topic on PP. I think Indian posters are already busy in preparing some answers. :misbah4

They only wouldn't play Pakistan in Sharjah. No issues with the rest of UAE .

And it is not only the Indians who won't play in Sharjah.

The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) on Tuesday accepted Pakistan's reservations against playing in India and decided to shift the Asia Cup 2018 to United Arab Emirates.

The decision was taken in the annual session of the ACC chaired by its president and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Najam Sethi after Pakistan objected to playing in India.

Sethi, along with PCB CEO Subhan Ahmed, also represented Pakistan in the session which also decided that five full members — Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan — would automatically qualify to play in the cup while Hong Kong, Malaysia, Oman, Nepal, Singapore and the hosts UAE would play the qualifiers for the sixth slot.

The meeting also decided that ACC Emerging Teams Cup 2018 would be co-hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka this year.

The Asia Cup 2018 — likely to be played between September 13 to 28 — would be the 14th edition of the tournament, with India playing as its defending champions.

Due to tense relations between the neighbours, India and Pakistan have not played a bilateral series since January 2013, but they continue to play matches in ICC tournaments.

Sweet sweet news. Can't wait to watch Ind vs Pak, SL vs BD in UAE.

You do not say no to the Deputy Head of State. Its his responsibility now to see that no one bothers team india.

I don't want Pak to travel to India. UAE is a good mutual venue. If I was a Pak player would refuse to travel to India, no way.

I am amused that people here are saying BCCI has lost it and shot itself in the foot..For BCCI, this is a win win..they never wanted to host an Asia cup in India..so now they get to host it in UAE and returning a favor to their friend ,the prince who himself requested BCCI to hold it in UAE..so this makes everyone happy...Only issue is schedule..so we might get to see an India A team playing in Asia cup...

PCB knocked BCCI down with this masterstroke. I really miss the old and clever BCCI. In last few years be it the Big 3, hosting rights or tussle with PCB we have really been humiliated everywhere and forced to make embarrassing compromise like these.

Can we please make BCCI great again? Please

Its like that old joke when the ant falls off the tree branch on to the back of a passing elephant, and his friend tells him "good job, you really crushed that elephant!".

Yes..and I forgot to add...all the gate revenue like ticket sales and instadia advertising revenue will go to BCCI as well..so its a win there as well..

The notion was BCCI would be able to shift Emerging Cup from Pakistan completely, a small victory for Sethi but co-hosting means 40-50% of group matches discarding the indian matches. Few matches in Pakistan won't be good.

Have BD ever played in the UAE? I can't remember even one series when BD played in the UAE. I vaguely seem to recall that BD played in Sharjah in 87 or so but im not sure.

BCCI caved in because of a letter sealed with a kiss? Get over it mate, it was a letter.

The reason is of course next year elections will be held in India, the IPL will be hosted in the UAE - BCCI do not want to disappoint Abu Dhabi ruler now do they?

Also, The Asian Cricket Council accepted Pakistan's reservations against playing in India, remind me, BCCI are on the ACC council?

A big slap on BCCI'S face. Nijam is a legend.

Najam did well but its still not a major victory. Emerging Nations Cup no. of group matches should be more in Pakistan, minus Indian ties and latter parts of tournament like Final and Semi-Finals.

I might be completley wrong but i think the revenue of asia cup is shared across all the asian country who are partcipating

It appears as if this happened: It was supposed to be held in India but Pakistan said they won't participate in it so it got changed...

that has been happening for a long time. BD has hosted the Asia cup multiple times as India cannot host it as Pak won't participate in it. regarding BCCI losing clout, i don't think BCCI honestly cares about it as long as they are making good money. in this case UAE head of state wrote to both BCCI and Indian govt.. so it was a foregone conclusion that it will be held in UAE as UAE and India are quite close and have excellent relationship

Oh Man.. some PPers cannot sleep until they put down BCCI/India.. it was kind of foregone conclusion that it will be held in UAE once the UAE Sheikh got involved. India and UAE have excellent relationship and Sheikh has very good personal rapport with Modi.. i was hoping that it will happen in either SL/BD for cricketing reasons but it was unlikely once he got involved. Stop thumping your chest. This happened few days before the announcements were made..

Here is a copy paste for those who don't want to click through the link. Pak indicated that there is no gurantee of Pak participation even if it is in UAE if India is hosting it.. lets see their decision

UAE Sheikh asks BCCI, ACC to stage Asia Cup in the Gulf
By Vijay Tagore, Mumbai Mirror | Updated: Apr 7, 2018, 07.29 AM IST
Asia Cup is getting a royal touch. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has come into the picture. The crown Prince of Abu Dhabi is pitching for the tournament to be held in the Middle East.

More specifically, Sheikh Nahyan wants the tournament staged in Abu Dhabi and has written to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Asian Cricket Council (ACC).

A decision on this expected to be taken on April 10 when the ACC members meet in Kuala Lumpur.

The Sheikh’s request fits in two ways. It goes with the recent improvement of relations between India and Abu Dhabi following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Gulf kingdom and it can also ensure the participation of Pakistan.

No guarantee of Pak participation

As of today, there is no guarantee that Pakistan will be able to take part in the tournament as India are the designated hosts. The prevailing tension at the border and diplomatic standoff between the countries are adding to the uncertainty. There may be a chance that a few matches will be played in Dubai, if not necessarily in Sharjah.

Sources close to the development tell Mirror that the Emirates Cricket Board officials meet the Asian board chiefs during last month’s ICC meeting in Dubai. Rahul Johri had represented BCCI at the meeting. But the BCCI CEO, without going into details, said the decision will be taken at the ACC meeting.

Besides having good equation with the Government of India, Sheikh Nahyan has good relations with the BCCI too. He used to be regular to the IPL matches at Sheik Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi in 2013 and so much so, it was said that the Crown Prince had never attended so many games of involving Pakistan team, which hosts all its international matches in the UAE.

Asia Cup will be a 50-over tournament in which six teams – five full members India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan and a qualifier – will take part. It means, there is no guarantee that UAE will be an automatic entry.

It has to qualify. So will Nepal, which has been granted the ODI status by the International Cricket Council (ICC) recently. The Himalayan state will have to come through the qualification process.

Indian govt has not given permission to Pakistan team to come to India. They havent been really giving any visas to Pakistanis lately. Its been in the news las few months.

Wow. I think the crowds will actually be big compared to the bilateral series played in UAE. If India can come to the UAE for Asia Cup, they should play bilaterals here too. Pakistan have a great chance of winning this tournament!

:)))

Najam Sethi has alredy been issued visa for the ICC meet in Kolkata. Pakistani Hindus as well as people related to cement business travel regularly.

Sethi got the visa after Icc and bcci both got involved. Even that was in jeopardy.

Even pilgrims are not being given visas anymore. Not even junior hockey or Kabbadi teams of Pakistan got visas.

The govt of India is making it clear that Pakistanis are not welcome.

Wow! India v Pakistan in the UAE will be fun. It will bring back my childhood memories of the 90s for sure, all tjose games in Sharjah!!!

Great news this, looking forward to the tournament.

Good practice in the UAE as the ODIs vs Australia begin approximately 5 days after the Asia Cup Final.

Also, means that Pakistan will be playing in the UAE for approximately 2 1/2 months before their tour of South Africa.

I guess this is a win-win for all parties involved.

This.

PCB got what they wanted i.e to move Asia Cup out of India.
BCCI got what they wanted i.e move their matches to netural country for emerging Asia cup. BCCI also remains the host of the upcoming Asia cup. I hope they prepare proper batting tracks and not low and slow pitches that we have been seeing past few years.

Overall, Win-Win to all parties.

Did you miss the part where GOI refused to give permission to Pak players to come to India or Did you miss the invite the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi sent to Bcci.

Sheikh Zayed sent it on behalf of the PCB, Emiratis could careless about cricket. Pakistan just got the right people to ring up the BCCI, it's all about connections afterall.

Why would you deny the Pakistanis their little pleasures -- like hosting 1/2 of this emerging thingy (what the heck is it anyway?) vs. 100% of it as originally planned?

There is a universe where losing hosting rights for 1/2 of the matches is called a win.

PCB :))

Presence of Pakistan prompts Asia Cup shift from India to UAE

The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) on Tuesday shifted the 50-over Asia Cup from India to United Arab Emirates as the BCCI could not procure permission from the Central government to host Pakistan.

The tournament will now be held from September 13-28 in Dubai and Abu Dhabi after all the member nations of ACC agreed unanimously for the change during a meeting at its Kuala Lumpur headquarters.

The BCCI was represented by its CEO Rahul Johri, who placed the request during the meeting chaired by PCB chairman Najam Sethi.

“Johri apprised the ACC board of the current situation. The BCCI has got a clearance that they can play Pakistan at a neutral venue. While it is a given for ICC tournaments, Asia Cup being an ACC tournament needed a government approval. Once the approval to allow Indian team play Pakistan at a neutral venue was agreed upon, the board’s request was placed,” a senior BCCI official told PTI on the condition of anonymity.

He agreed that in the current scenario, chances of hosting Pakistan was next to nil.

“Since this is not World Cup, Champions Trophy or World T20, it was a foregone conclusion that the government would not approve BCCI hosting Pakistan in prevailing circumstances. The public sentiment needs to be respected,” the official said.

The Indian team is expected to play its matches in the second week of the tournament as they would have just completed their tour of England.

“UAE will be facilitating the organization but all the other modalities remain same. Star Sports will be broadcasting the tournament and the gate money (collection from tickets and in stadia) will be BCCI’s. Obviously BCCI will be paying the Emirates Cricket Board a facilitation fee,” the official further informed.

The reason for zeroing in on UAE is purely logistical.

“India wouldn’t have played in Pakistan. But UAE is one place where there is a sizeable population of India, Pakistan and even Afghanistan. Even non-India matches is expected to attract a lot of crowd. If you see, 1 dirham is nearly Rs 18 (INR 17.69 as of today). Had the tournament been in held in India, matches like Afghanistan vs Sri Lanka wouldn’t have attracted much crowd,” the official added.

The Asia Cup is a biennial event which is now held in both ODI and T20 formats.

In 2016, it was held in the T20 format as the teams wanted to prepare for the World T20, which was scheduled just after the event. This time it will be a 50-over event as teams are now gearing up for next year’s ODI World Cup in England.
