MUMBAI: The BCCI’s fitness tests are back in the news again. According to a top source, wicketkeeper batsmen Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan, batsman Nitish Rana, legspinning allrounder Rahul Tewatia and seamers Siddarth Kaul and Jaydev Unadkat have all failed to clear the new ‘2-km run’ fitness test introduced by the BCCI at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore this week.

“Since this is a new type of a fitness test, they will all get a second chance to clear it at a fresh date, after some gap.

However, if they fail to clear it, then it puts their selection for the forthcoming white-ball series comprising five T20Is and three ODIs against England at home in doubt,” a source told TOI.

In 2018, Samson, Mohammed Shami and Ambati Rayudu had failed to clear the yo-yo test, following which they weren’t included for the limited-overs games on the England tour.

Samson was a part of the Indian team which played the T20I series in Australia last winter.

“A few fitness tests were conducted for around 20-odd cricketers who are in reckoning for the limitedovers series against England at home, and for the T20 World Cup in India later this year. Among these tests was the now famous yo-yo test and the new ‘2km run’ fitness test. In this test, a batsman, wicketkeeper or a spinner has to complete the twokilometre distance in eight minutes and 30 seconds, while for a fast bowler, the benchmark is eight minutes and 15 seconds. Six of the players failed to clear these tests. Some players barely managed to complete the run,” the source said.

Asked about the logic of conducting this new test, the source said: “Like in the case of the yo-yo test, it will be mandatory. Kohli and Shastri are convinced about this criteria being set in stone.”

While remaining fit is an absolute criteria for International Sports these days, but I'd love to see what happens, if India's top players somehow fail these tests, & Colly remains with a team of Usain Bolts (In terms of running) at his disposal, but with average cricketing ability.

On a side note, I remember watching an Interview of Wasim Akram many years back, where he was saying something like that the fast bowlers of this generation focus only on bowling in nets, & building muscles in the gym, whereas he recalls how Imran had made it mandatory for fast bowlers to complete a dozen rounds of the stadium at full pace, & that was the prime reason why they never felt tired during the matches, & could bowl as many overs as required under any conditions.

I am disappointed to see Jaydev Unadkat in the list. He's at his prime and should aspire to get in Indian test XI. Instead he is failing a test which likes of Misbah or YK would probably pass easily

I heard Sunny or Manjarkar saying that in UAE ODIs both Ws used to bowl like 5 hour spells before start of ODI. They were already sweating before start of actual bowling.

So pakistan team has undergone these tests already?

It is a yo-yo test and a 2km in 8m30s. I think many guys who aren't even pros can smoke it...

Especially when they pay you to take care of your body

Seriously 2 km in 8:30 is really very achievable even by guys who just jog 3-4 times a week. Not very difficult.

Mumbai Indians' batsman Ishan Kishan has inched closer to a national selection by clearing the BCCI's 2-km fitness test. Kishan, an India A regular since 2017, dropped the update on social media. Interestingly, his post came just a few hours after a report suggested that he was among the cricketers who failed the test.

As per The Times of India, he and five other players had flunked the test. The report had added that the players would be given a second chance as it's a new test. It isn't known whether Kishan passed it in the first go or in the second attempt. Check out his post -

Kishan, the former India U-19 captain, came close to selection for Australia T20Is after he piled up 516 runs in IPL 2020 - most by an uncapped player in the history of IPL. The young batsman displayed his power-hitting by hitting 30 sixes. Since Sanju Samson was ahead of him in the pecking order, Kishan missed out. But the latter is likely to get the nod for the home T20Is against England.

Kishan has 2372 T20 runs at a strike-rate of 133.48. He has also scored 2 hundreds and 12 half-centuries. He leads Jharkhand in domestic cricket.

Apart from Kishan, Jaydev Unadkat and Siddarth Kaul have also cleared the fitness test. Unadkat has been away from the national team since 2018 while Kaul last represented the Men in Blue before the 2019 World Cup. Both the players are in line to be recalled as the regular pacers are likely to be rested.

There is no word on Samson. Even if he clears the fitness test, he might lose his spot to Kishan as he only managed 48 runs in three T20Is against Australia. Rishabh Pant will also be in contention to make his limited-overs comeback. It remains to be seen whether the selection panel recalls him or will he lose the backup spot to his former U-19 captain.

I hope they continue to fail these tests. Siddharth Kaul, Unadkat are useless. Samson and Kishan have future. I hope they clear the test.

Good on BCCI, to make sure that unfit players are not selected. There should be a zero tolerance on missing fitness standards.

Samson has had a strange career.

He has been a “prospect” and a “future star” for 6-7 years but never seems to kick on.

He is 26 already and has already been overtaken by the next generation of Gill, Shaw, Pant etc.

He should have been an Indian regular by now. Every year in IPL, he plays a few outrageous innings where he looks like the best batsman in India but then fails badly and disappears until the next IPL edition.

I wonder if he will ever become a fixture in the Indian team.

Nitish Rana is an incredible player. Very impressed with his batting.

I'm sure that couch potato Rohit is one of them.

Hence why D Waqar went from 145-150 km/hr to a 127-132 km/hr trundler within 4-5 years while being in his 20's.
