63 killed in twin suicide attacks as terrorists storm police training college in Quetta [Update #19]

I suggest you boil a little less and familiarize yourself with the history of the region particularly LeJ and ISI's role in the it. LeJ has been used by our army extensively against separatist militants in Balochistan for decades but LeJ is, at it's core, a sectarian organization that exists to eradicate shias and because of their close relation with the ISI, they have had a free pass to attack Hazaras in Quetta for years now. There's a reason Baloch separatists, who thrive on hitting high profile targets, have been able to attack everywhere in Balochistan except the capital and that reason is that the capital is too secure to even get inside, much less attack. That an organization that is on exceptionally friendly terms with the army and has a long history of working with and for them, however, can attack there as and when they please should raise a few alarms but apparently if the army says jump, you ask how high. As for why they'd attack their own people, can you tell me if they've ever needed a reason to do so in the past? The military has demonstrated hundreds of times that the lives of ordinary Pakistanis are expendable if they serve their interests somehow. This is the same ISI that has destroyed 6 or 7 million Pakistani lives by smuggling heroin from Afghanistan into Pakistan on an industrial scale and using Pakistan as a captive market to sell their wares. This is also the same army that continues to meet LeJ's leadership over tea and biscuits to this very day despite LeJ having the second highest body count in Pakistan since 2001 after TTP. I'd take your objections a little more seriously if they weren't so easily dismissable on account of being completely devoid of any factual basis or understanding of the history and operating procedures of the organization you're defending. Next time you read something you don't agree with, try to read a little on the background of why someone might say what they say instead of getting offended and boiling.

People will start taking you more seriously if you stop shooting from the hip. Also learn to add paragraphs.

Excellently post.
DW44 Why does the army/civilian leadership give such freedom to LeJ when they are targeting Pakistani's? Is it because of Money or Support they have or the people of Pakistan are stupid enough to support groups such as LeJ even though they kill your own citizens?

Because they're useful for both. There's a lot of you scratch my back I scratch yours going on. In Balochistan the army supports them because they fight BLA and BRA who are sponsored mostly by India and therefore not in the military's good books but that comes at a cost since they then get immunity from any repercussions when they carry out their own attacks against local Hazaras mostly. In Pakistan, political space is a valuable commodity and army needs someone to take up the space they've taken from MQM(rightfully) and PPP(mostly wrongfully) in Karachi which is why ASWJ has been popping up there more frequently. All three major parties have or had seat sharing with ASWJ, LeJ's political front, in South Punjab(PML-N), Azad Kashmir(PTI) and Karachi(PPP - this one is over I think, it was there before the 2013 elections) since ASWJ has some support in certain parts of these regions particularly in South Punjab. In PML-N's case, they're also involved in land grabbing and use these groups as muscle/enforcers to keep the land they occupy under control.

You do know that I've actually posted photographic evidence of that on this very forum not too long ago? As for people taking me seriously, I'd rather not be taken seriously by the vast majority of people here given the kind of rubbish they believe.

QUETTA: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and Army Chief Gen Raheel Sharif were among the senior government and military functionaries who rushed to the provincial capital as soon as horrors of the devastating attack on the Police Training College, Quetta, became evident on Tuesday.

During the course of the day, they attended the funeral of those killed in the terrorist attack and visited hospital to inquire after the injured.

According to sources, however, the most worthwhile engagement of the day was a meeting at which they discussed the attack, its implications and the implementation of the National Action Plan (NAP) as well as a plan aimed at making Quetta a safe city.

At the meeting, which was also attended by Balochistan Chief Minister Sanaullah Zehri, National Security Adviser retired Lt Gen Nasser Janjua, Commander of Southern Command Lt Gen Aamir Riaz, Home Minister Sarfaraz Ahmed Bugti and others, several important decisions were taken.

At the meeting, the prime minister also expressed concern over the authorities’ failure to make Quetta safe despite formulation of a well-thought out plan.

The heads of security and law enforcement agencies attending the meeting briefed the prime minister on the attack on the police training college.

The meeting was informed that adequate security measures had not been taken at the police training college, even though there were prior intelligence reports that security personnel could be attacked soon, the sources said.

The meeting was informed that the assailants had come from Afghanistan and were in contact with their handlers in the neighbouring country.

At this, the prime minister said the issue would be taken up with Afghanistan.

According to the sources, Prime Minister Sharif asked the officials concerned why the Quetta Safe City plan had not been fully enforced despite passage of considerable time since its preparation.

He said the federal government would have provided additional funds to the province had it been informed earlier that lack of funding had stalled its implementation.

Prime Minister Sharif, Gen Raheel Sharif and Chaudhry Nisar visited the Sandeman Civil Hospital to inquire after the health of police cadets injured in the terrorist attack. Balochistan Governor Mohammad Khan Achakzai and other officials were with them.

They visited the bed of every injured cadet.

They were informed that cadets in need of surgical operations had already been operated upon. The prime minister asked the doctors to take good care of the cadets.

Gen Sharif also visited the training college along with senior army officials. He met the military and police personnel who took part in the operation launched to clear the college of terrorists.

The army chief announced that Tamgha-i-Jurrat would be given to Captain Roohullah and Tamgha-i-Basalat to Naib Subedar Mohammad Ali.

They laid down their lives after neutralising one suicide bomber and cornering another, the ISPR said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Zehri asked Balochistan’s inspector general of police to carry out an investigation into the attack and submit a report in 24 hours.

News article on the main page of DAWN today with headline : "Assailants came from Afghanistan, PM told"

I'd rather believe a major reputable newspaper than some nobody on an online forum who believes in conspiracy theories regarding the evil nexus called ISI.

The meeting I was referring to earlier(50 points for identifying Aurangzeb Farooqui, their chief):

If you look carefully at the markings on Wajahat sahab's chest, you'll notice that he's a freaking brigadier.

There you go. Next time do a little fact checking before running around making ridiculous claims.

I'd rather believe a major reputable newspaper than some nobody on an online forum who believes in conspiracy theories regarding the evil nexus called ISI.

Except none of these are conspiracy theories and ISI's close relations with LeJ/SSP/ASWJ have been well documented by respected journalists, scholars and academics both within Pakistan and outside. In fact, weren't you people going after this very paper when it printed a story recently that made similar allegations against the army? Once again, in your zeal to play the Afghanistan card, you disregard which particular organization in Afghanistan they're affiliated with and where that organization's command and control infrastructure is.

Two points:

A. In the very pictures you posted, there is a whole contingent of police officers sitting there, why would this organization attack the same people they are having "tea and biscuits" with?

B. Since this organization specifically targets Shia Muslims, how can they be sure that the police academy cadets are Shias or Sunnis.

Like I said, easy to shoot from the hip. You are making a whole narrative up based on two photos.

First of all there is no "you people" so better if you don't clump people together and think of yourself of being at a higher level.

Dawn did not post anything untoward, the PM's office fed them false info about some meeting and they published it after cross-checking it twice/thrice. Then when the army questioned the news report the government didn't know what to do and who to blame so they put Almeida shahab on the ECL and tried blaming him for false news.

And all these journalists who have made a career out of reporting the truth would have lessar knowledge than YOU, that is quite a laughable claim.

Perhaps you need to come down to earth and do a little bit of introspection.

A - That's KPK police, not Balochistan police. As for why they'd do it, I suggest you ask them since they've already claimed responsibility.
B - This organization also targets a lot of other people aside from shias. Do you really find it that far fetched that they'd attack law enforcement in the province they chiefly target?

If you think the two photos are all there is to the narrative, I suggest you assume less and read a little more. Don't even need to do any heavy lifting with books and stuff, a cursory google search will enlighten you greatly considering how shamefully unaware you are of the goings on in the country. Shooting from the hip, my friend, is what one can call your earlier claim in this very thread that this was India when there was literally no indication to that effect by any concerned authorities, along with the fact that the organization that had been implicated happened to be a Pakistani one.

Are you for real? Fed them false info and they printed it? The information was absolutely correct, it was the government's reaction afterwards that was embarrasing. If you weren't completely clueless about how Pakistan works, you'd know the consequences of making a claim like that against the army, especially by PML-N of all people, without serious evidence.

Hmmm so they are friends with KPK police but enemies with Baluchistan police. Seems about right.

And I'm the one making up conspiracy theories. `

Are you even serious?????

I suggest you tune into Dr. Shahid Masood's or Kashif Abbasi's shows from 3-4 days back.

As much as India and Pakistan hate themselves, they seem to be united in coming up with the same accusations on the neighbouring country westward.

Only thing missing is the first aid kit with instructions in pashto.

Well said. This is how things work in 3rd world countries. Blame other countries and then get over it within a week, repeat the same bs after every terrorist attack. If it's Afghanistan then what are they going to do about it? Oh yeah, nothing.

Good point. Perhaps Indian armed forces were also behind the terrorist attack on their own soil as well. Very politically convenient to up the ante against Pakistan when public support is on the wane.

OK Time Out now.

The thread is sad place for reflection on the deaths of fellow Muslims and its fast become a place to accuse people without proof etc

I am calling time on any conspiracy theories

By all means talk in generic sense but accuse any one/army/politicians etc

I Am cleaning this up now.

Had the honour of knowing one of the shaheed, Capt Rohullah. One of the most competent officers I ever came across and wonderful human being.

We lost alot of young men, but had it not for Capt Rohullah many more would have perished. Listen to one of the hostages narrate how he saved dozens of lives.

Damn man that captain is so young, and has such a noorani chehra.

Pakistan's enemies can never succeed in a million year if we continue to produce son's of soils like Capt. Rohullah shaheed.

2000 police officers in Nawaz's protocol but just 1 security guard at the police academy.

Just goes to show that the life of the badshah salamat is so much more important than us bloody peasants.

Just read that he got married less than a month ago. :(
