A 19-year-old Christian man was arrested in Pakistan on charges of blasphemy, which is punished with the death penalty in the South Asian nation.

The young man, Sunny Waqas, is studying health sciences at a high school in Bahawalnagar, Punjab Province.

The charges include possession of blasphemous material about the Prophet Muhammad. In reality, the accusations came from a Muslim neighbour over a cricket match.

The young man was arrested on 29 June as he was playing at the back of a friend's house. The police charged him with violating 295-C of the Pakistani Penal Code, more commonly known as the blasphemy law, which punishes insults against the Holy Prophet (Muhammad).

The Voice Society association reports that the family began searching for him after his arrest, worried that he had not come home. When the parents went to the police station, they were told that no one by the name of Sunny was in custody and that they should look elsewhere.

Only the next day, were they informed that their neighbour Bilal Ahmad had filed a complaint against their son. According to police, the young man had a bag with flyers and other blasphemous material inside.

The parents are desperate. Sunny’s father, Mushtaq Masih, said that he “is a bright student and is also fond of cricket. He plays cricket in his free time. A few days before he had had a quarrel with some Muslim players, including Bilal Ahmad.”

The mother notes that her son has "many Muslim friends. He can never do anything to hurt the feelings of anyone. He’s an obedient son and is very sensitive towards inter-faith issues."

At present, he is being held in the Bahawalpur district jail, as police gathers evidence for the investigation.

In Pakistan, being accused of insulting Islam can trigger violent reactions by radicals, like in the Asia Bibi’s case.

Activists have been complaining for years that the "black law" on blasphemy is being used against religious minorities to settle personal scores.

Pathetic pathetic.... makes me soooo angry. Stupid Bilal Ahmed perhaps accused him of blasphemy because he lost a cricket match, and our pathetic Punjab police took his word for it. Somebody link the PM IK or Firduos Ashiq Awan on twitter about it. They usually are quick to take action.

Punjab police is the most corrupt, incompetent police force in the world. 90% of their officers deserve to be sent in front of a firing squad.

There will be no independent investigation by our corrupt and biased police. Some washed up Mullah will want him dead now together with his thousands of blood thirsty students. Show the world what blasphemous material was recovered. Expect another poor man to be wanting then given asylum in some western country from Imran Khan's "neya Pakistan".

This law has no place in a democracy. Get rid of it ASAP.

If Bilal Ahmad wrongly accused this Christian man, he may answer for it on the day of judgement. I hope Sunny Waqas will become free if he didn't do anything wrong.

People from subcontinent take cricket a bit too seriously. It shouldn't cause issues like this.

Searched all over google. Only two news sources have this story. Pakistan Christian Post and this "AsiaNet.it".

Interestingly, AsiaNet decided to leave out some important information.

"The Voice’s fact-finding team concluded from our fact finding that a person named Bilal Ahmad out of the group of Sunny’s friends have satisfied his grudges against him and reported against him a fake story upon which the Police made a fictitious case against him as there was no evidence a part from this self-made story. The Voice team met Sunny Waqas in District Jail Bahawalpur and assured him that Justice will be served to him and he will be out of Jail soon. The Voice legal team will wait for the investigation to be completed by the police once than we will be able to update you about the parameters of this case. So far The Voice team have joined investigation and we are very optimistic that like other cases Sunny Waqas will also find Justice soon with the efforts of the Voice team."

At this point, the accuser might be in more trouble.

I don't even know what is considered blasphemous in Pak. They keep shifting the goal posts.
