Its a extremely good idea especially for children under the age of 10.
Here 6 year old kid's bag weigh quite a bit. It should be max 1 kg.
Most times its parents doing homework by proxy anyway.

Am totally against anti-homework. I can't remember when I never had any homework from school. And I used to do it myself because it was my responsibility, not my parents. They never helped me in my homework, not because they couldn't but because it was MY homework and I needed to be responsible for it. Homework is what solidified my concepts. It should always be there irrespective of age. At school, you don't tend to pay attention in classes because you have friends around you and there's always that tendency to talk to friends. Homework is the one thing where your focus is 100% and it certainly helps if you do it yourself.

Really good decision.

Homework is just a formality of doing class work at home. Kids shouldn't write paragraphs and copying question answers from the book. Below the age of 6. Kids should be taught to work more hand-based activities and play mental games. Instead of homework give them assignments (Like - Go out and observe trees around your house. And the next they tell teachers about trees)

To be honest a lot of schools are nothing but expensive day care centers! Real work happens at home with the supervision of parents. You take away homework and Lord knows what we get

Homework still needs to exist. Some teachers are really bad. So homework is required to help master certain weaknesses yourself or by asking a sibling etc.

Finland school is at the top of the world for a reason.

Home work should only be for those who are lacking in class and under performing. Those kids who are struggling need extra help to bring them up with the rest of the class. In my day we got home work often just for the sake off it as if it was some punishment. I don't see the point in learning something that has been understood by the student/s.

Home work is needed. But as I see it, private schools in India has gone overboard and put so much stress in kids that these kids gets a bit rebellious in very early stages of life.

They have to carry around 5kgs of bags which isn't far from their actual body weight itself.

I did go to a private school but we had some strict rules. We had 2 sets of same books. One for school and other at home. We were given minimal homework (as required by the school guidelines).

Considering going overboard with homework, I actually do think there shouldn't be any homework.

Most people are talking about weight of the bags here when that’s not even the biggest issue with having homework. The biggest issue is not having time for doing other things. There’s more to a child’s life than copying textbooks. If the child is not learning anything from 6 or so hours at school, the fault is with the school. Why is it so difficult to understand? Nobody enjoys doing homework. You’re not going to learn much when you’re doing something for the sake of it.

Well, we all hated this as kids but what and how teach at schools, home work is essential. Unless the standard of teaching improves at schools, you can't just do away with home work.
