Abu Dhabi's Crown Prince asks BCCI and ACC to stage 2018 Asia Cup in Abu Dhabi [Update Post #257]

There are two high profile rivalries now! One is India vs. Pakistan (as usual anywhere anytime) and the new one Bangladesh vs. Sri Lanka (for the Naagin revenge saga 2.0)

Interesting Asia Cup indeed...

BCB already reap the rewards 3 times in a row. Other should get at least once, isn't it?

Sure. BCB reaped a lot of rewards for being allied with BCCI in the past. Go and check how many ODIs and T20s India has played in Bangladesh, each of those games is worth millions of dollars in broadcast earnings for the BCB. Not sure what BCB gained by 'switching sides' against the BCCI at the ICC. Going forward, it will be SL and Afghan who will be the favored allies of the BCCI, at least in the short term, until BCB makes amends.

The vote was against SRINI and co. not BCCI.

actually from quality of competition perspective and recent India/BD encounters have been great. No recent India Pak matches were even close

Welcome to :cobra Part Deux

Lol. This is going to be one heck of an Asia cup. I believe everyone will send their strong teams. It's BD's strong suit too. SL can surprise anyone as they did in CT and it's their home conditions. Pak vs Ind, SL vs BD. Mouthwatering contests

I think, there are 7 ODI sides in Asia - AFG, BD, IND, NPL, PAK, SRL & UAE. May be we can add HK as well.

2 groups, 12 games; after that top 4 plays another round - 18 games.
Top 2 plays the final.

As per current ranking, these are Asian position -

IND, PAK, BD, SRL, AFG, UAE, NPL & HK.

Grouping should be : 1, 4, 5, 8 and 2, 3, 6, 7. That makes

Group A: IND, SRL, AFG, HK
Group B: PAK, BD, UAE, NPL

Or we can exchange last 2.

Should be great tournament.

Who do you think will win and why?

We should send the same/similar team that we did in Nidahas trophy. India will have long tour of UK prior to Asia cup and some of the players would deserve some rest before our home season and tour to Australia begins. Even if we lose it will be good experience for some of the youngsters. Asia cup is meh, lose or win not many Indian fan cares.

Actually both India and SL have won Asia cup way too many times.. Since it is in SL, they cannot afford to experiment.. At least India should use that to experiment and test their bench strength.

Bangladesh vs India is now a rivalry as well. There is sure to be drama with the umpiring if nothing else (decapitated heads, shaved hair) photoshops, lol.

Bangladesh vs Pakistan is now also a rivalry - fight for 2nd best Asian one day side.

Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka is a rivalry for reasons I'm Nagin into.

And Bangladesh vs Afghanistan is a rivalry as the Afghans will backing themselves to thrash us.

UAE Sheikh asks BCCI, ACC to stage Asia Cup in the Gulf

Asia Cup is getting a royal touch. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has come into the picture. The crown Prince of Abu Dhabi is pitching for the tournament to be held in the Middle East. More specifically, Sheikh Nahyan wants the tournament staged in Abu Dhabi and has written to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Asian Cricket Council (ACC).

A decision on this expected to be taken on April 10 when the ACC members meet in Kuala Lumpur. The Sheikh’s request fits in two ways. It goes with the recent improvement of relations between India and Abu Dhabi following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Gulf kingdom and it can also ensure the participation of Pakistan.

No guarantee of Pak participation

As of today, there is no guarantee that Pakistan will be able to take part in the tournament as India are the designated hosts. The prevailing tension at the border and diplomatic standoff between the countries are adding to the uncertainty. There may be a chance that a few matches will be played in Dubai, if not necessarily in Sharjah.

Sources close to the development tell Mirror that the Emirates Cricket Board officials meet the Asian board chiefs during last month’s ICC meeting in Dubai. Rahul Johri had represented BCCI at the meeting. But the BCCI CEO, without going into details, said the decision will be taken at the ACC meeting.

Besides having good equation with the Government of India, Sheikh Nahyan has good relations with the BCCI too. He used to be regular to the IPL matches at Sheik Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi in 2013 and so much so, it was said that the Crown Prince had never attended so many games of involving Pakistan team, which hosts all its international matches in the UAE.

Asia Cup will be a 50-over tournament in which six teams – five full members India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan and a qualifier – will take part. It means, there is no guarantee that UAE will be an automatic entry. It has to qualify. So will Nepal, which has been granted the ODI status by the International Cricket Council (ICC) recently. The Himalayan state will have to come through the qualification process.

Im Sorry What???

That is one sided rivalry. No Indian player will be under pressure to perform against 'Mighty' BD as they would be facing Pakistan. Heck we Indian fans don't even give you guys chances. Whenever we have game against BD, most Indian fans be like "are BD hai, aram se jeet jayenge hum"

That sums up the so called RIVALRY

India/BCCI are in tricky position. They cant host because Pakistan would not feel safe and will most likely pull out. Now, UAE Sheikh have requested BCCI to host games in UAE which BCCI have been ignoring for many years. If they refuse, then can sour the relationship with UAE, and if they agree will mean BCCI will moving forward wont have problem touring there.

Interesting times ahead

I don't think there is a rivalry yet. But last few matches between these two teams have been very close

Unless there is a wiki page on the rivalry .. there is no rivalry

You need to some time to earn that honor !

Based purely on win loss record BD-IND is a closer rivalry than IND-PAK as far as ICC events go. If you include Asia Cups - this as an AC cup thread after all - BD has knocked India out of tournaments a couple of times. Doubt it was too aram se. Just going by the odds the next one could be around the corner. Better 2018 than 2019, no?

But I was really talking about the fanbased rivalry. For whatever reason many Pakistan, Indian, and now Sri Lankan fans too cant stand Bangladeshis. That naturally leads to verbal jousting...this thread being an example. You just had to reply even though there was no compelling reason too (at least according to you).

WOW... what a serious rivalry !!!! :)))

Bangladesh fans still cannot fathom that respect as equal rivals come with time not with once in blue moon win. Heck Zimbabwe, Kenya and Afghanistan have produced better results against better teams in far lesser time. They don't harp about rivalries.

BCCI do not have the mustard to play in UAE, let alone the Indian government. Remember, BCCI were trying their level best to exclude Pakistan from the Asia Cup 2018 - BCCI failed spectacularly.

Do BCCI seek approval from India RSS government, or do the Indian Government stick to their horses and claim BCCI is banned from playing in UAE due to corruption?

In any case, BCCI or Indian government cannot be seen to surrender points or status to Pakistan/PCB. If India play Pakistan in UAE, it will undermine India's position.

India is either FORCED to play Pakistan, or shown to be WEAK agsint Pakistan. BCCI has a choice between the lesser of two evils.

In any case, Pakistan is calling the shots.

Please no. Awful place for LOI cricket. The slow and low pitch and the massive ground do no favours to the batsmen or bowlers. Empty stadium as well so there is never any atmosphere either.

Better to play in Sri Lanka.

Better to play in Sri Lanka.

Better to play at Clifton beach than UAE, particularly that Abu Dhabi wicket. On top of that, if International tournament becomes frequent there, instead of Camels & Horses, those Emirates will start to buy players - apart from Indian players, none are paid in millions..... so you know.

SL is going to have mostly empty stadiums I think. Will it be raining? If so better to have it in UAE where at least you will get the full 100 overs in.

Asia Cup 2018 will be the Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam show.

Asia cup is usually good for our batting.

Remember we have scored 300 at least once since 2008 Asia Cup (vs Ind, Malik 100), 2010 (vs Ban, Afridi 100), 2012 (vs Ind, Hafeez and Nasir 100s), 2014 vs Ban (Umar, Fawad and Shehzad 100s).

So yea hope Babar/Haris have good series' as they really haven't had a good tournament on the world stage as of yet. As opposed to Fakhar (CT).

Backing Babar to come good. Hoping he scores a 100 against India to shut up the haters.

I'd rather that global tournaments were played in England alone, if only for the fact that the broadcast quality doesn't encourage you to turn the match off.

That's one of the dreadful things of an Asian tournament. It would be the worst commentators from each country sharing mics.

England is also guaranteed to sell out every neutral game given the size of each diaspora there. 2019 WC will be awesome.

ARE YOU JOKING???

bangladesh is like that child who wants to get involved in a fight between his two older siblings just to get attention.

But on a serious note BD cricket is not mentally strong enough to beat India and Pakistan in finals and SF

They still have that minnow mentality in them.
