A man who was left with life-changing injuries in an East London acid attack has been telling this programme about his ordeal. Jameel Muhktar was in his car with his cousin Reshem Khan when a toxic substance was sprayed through the window.

There’s been a steep rise in acid attacks in recent years. The Metropolitan Police said there were 261 such attacks, but last year that soared to 454. Today Mr Mukhtar told this programme he believes he was targeted because of his race or religion. Assed Baig reports.

Read about this news 2 days ago. So the attacker was white?

A suspect with face tattoos is being hunted by police after two cousins were sprayed with ‘acid’ as they were celebrating a 21st birthday.

Jameel Muhktar and Resham Khan were left with ‘life changing’ injuries on 9..15am last Wednesday as the pair were celebrating Resham’s 21st birthday.

John Tomlin, 24, is now wanted for questioning and should not be approached by the public, the Met Police have warned.

Jameel, 37, is said to be ‘unrecognisable’ following the attack and had surgery earlier this week to treat his horrific injuries.

Resham and Jameel had stopped at traffic lights when they were approached by a man who threw the toxic substance at Resham through the window.

The attacker then ran around the car to throw more acid at Jameel before fleeing the scene in Tollgate Road, Canning Town, east London.

Tomlin is described as a stocky 6ft tall white man with face tattoos and is known to visit Canning Town.

Jameel, who was put into an induced coma after the attack and remains in a serious condition, according to his mum Naseem.

She said: ‘I’m not going to say much until I have spoken to my son properly..

‘He is having surgery today but I have been in constant contact with him and am going to see him tomorrow.

‘He has really severe burns on his arms, back and chest. He was driving and his cousin was burnt very badly too.

‘There is a lot more to be said than just the tweets, it goes a lot deeper. There were four other attacks in the area on the same day. My son is going to need years of care.’

Detective Superintendent Neil Matthews, said the attack was a ‘horrendous act of violence’ and warned he should not be approached.

He added: ‘I would like to reassure the public that our continued focus remains on finding the person responsible for this horrendous act of violence.

‘We will continue to progress these enquiries as quickly as humanly possible and fully understand concerns that they should be brought to justice quickly.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Metropolitan Police or Crimestoppers if they have any information that may lead to an arrest or provide other information to assist our enquiries.

‘This male should not be approached; instead members of the public should dial 999 if seen.

‘Officers from Newham and the Met’s Territorial Support Group executed a warrant at an address in E16 on the afternoon of 21 June in connection with the incident.’

Police say there have been no arrests made and their enquiries continue.

This guy.

There have been numerous attacks in east London , Essex , rainham

And other areas

One guy got attacked in Luton

Another Pakistani pizza delivery guy was burnt in Dagenham

A black guy was attacked in rainham

A women attacked in high Wycombe

A lot of the attacks are related to gangs in east London

Quite s few revenge attacks on women

I think Sharmeen obaid should come to the uk and make acid attack documentary about English people before she starts slagging of Pakistan

Because in uk the incidents are increasing

Recent rise in acid attacks here in the UK. The video was of a white folk attacking a 21 year old Pakistani girl and her cousin. Scary times here! Feel frightened for my family and friends, we tend to keep our car windows shut and car doors locked. Ofcourse, its hate crime.

Terrible! Stay safe brothers and sisters in UK.

That's posed a dilemma for me, I'm a vocal opponent of women covering up, but in this case it might have saved that girl from at least some of that horrible disfigurement we have seen. On the other hand you would imagine the niqab would invite more attacks rather than less so what to do? Such a pretty girl as well.

I dont think any covering or not makes a massive difference when an idiot decides to throw acid on someones face. Appatently, there have been more attacks. I need to get out of this country in the near future.

It doesn't matter if acid is thrown.

I saw the 21 year old girl make thread on twitter as soon as it happened and I felt so bad for her :( I really wish she and her cousin get their lives back and hopefully everything gets back to normal. The attacker needs to be given a life sentence for this horrible act and something needs to be done to prevent acid attacks from happening because a lot of people's lives are now at risk and some people are now afraid to go out.

Such a beautiful girl attacked viciously for no reason by an evil scumbag.

I think the suspect has still not been found, what are the police doing?

The media and government should also take some responsibility for creating the atmosphere for such hate crimes.

Besides Channel 4 the media boycots hate crime incidents against muslims and other minorities as well, besides social media there is little coverage

Really? This is shocking to hear brother. I just go about my business but you have to worry about your family.

We need a new law against Islamaphobia, something along the lines of what Canada passed. Any violence against Muslims should carry heavy sentences.

The scariest part is we have no clue as to when this will end, imagine if imperial wars continue and terrorism continues for another decade. How will Muslims be living in western nations?

Resham Khan - Acid Attack Victim

Visit this page

https://www.gofundme.com/21stbirthdayacidattack

It has been set up by Resham's fellow student named Daniel Mann to help her.

"

On her 21st birthday on June 21st 2017, at around 9am. Resham Khan and her cousin Jameel Muhktar were attacked with sulphuric acid as they were in traffic. Being attacked was followed by a car crash on the motorway as the acid burnt through the eyes, clothes, skin and car Resham and Jameel were in. They ran out of the car, stripped off on the motorway, ran around flagging people down pleading for water naked. After 45 minutes on the motorway waiting for emergency services, a passing driver gave them a lift to the local hospital. They ran through the hospital naked screaming.

With plans to celebrate her birthday with family, and having just got back from an exchange year in Cyprus, Resham is a Business Management student who was due to start her new job working with young people on a social inclusion residential.

Resham planned to go to a spa and restaurant with her mum for her 21st birthday. It was to be the first time they spent quality time together since Resham had studied abroad. Resham had not seen Jameel in 2 years, and was marking the occasion.

This attack has caused them both to put their lives on hold. A university student in Manchester, Resham had not been back in the UK for longer than a week before the attack happened. She had spent the last 9 months on an exchange program in Cyprus. Resham was also due to start her new job on July 2nd which she can no longer do. Also she was called in for a job interview which she can no longer attend. Their life is currently on hold but we want them to see that this is temporary and things will get back to normal.

Resham is usually a very confident young woman. She was preparing to open her own business over the summer, and had plans to model for Asian bridal, make up and hair artists. But now she feels as though her identity has been stolen from her, on her 21st birthday.

I want to raise money for Resham and her family to provide them with additional support. Although she is currently in hospital, once discharged, we understand aftercare for her physically and mentally is crucial. It wasn't right that she or Jameel were attacked in such a vicious way. And although we have faith justice will be served once the criminal is caught, the scars Resham and Jameel will carry will last a life time.

I studied with Resham. Myself and a few other of Resham's friends wanted to raise money to support her with therapy sessions to rebuild her confidence, laser eye treatment and accommodation in an area she feels safe in. Resham and Jameel feel as though she won't be accepted in 'the world we live in', and that all their future plans and goals are now unachievable. We are also aware she has lost out on time at work, and due to this may struggle financially.

Her injuries:
Left eye damage
Burns across body - arms, legs, face, shoulder
Skin graph

His injuries:
Induced coma
1st degree burns across body - arms, legs, back, whole neck. Check, Right ear, whole head, side of face
Right eye damage

a disgusting hate crime it seems. Normally with acid attacks its done by someone with a personal connection to the victim.

however this seems like a racially motivated attack and totally random.

very sad that she has been disfigured like this by a coward.

He should face a long sentence. acid attackers are the **** of the earth

Doubt we will see that, punishment these days are very lenient and these guys always get away with it; the good thing is that due to their criminal record society never truly accepts them when they do get out.

We had a session with our new MP in our constituency and she has promised to bring this issue up in Parliament

This is far-right terrorism. It should be called and admonished as such. I honestly think as a Muslim concerned about my family we should invest in our own security. The government doesn't seem to give a damn because they're already killing people with their disability cuts.

How hard would it be for areas with high Muslim populations to start raising awareness in mosques about acid attacks and the like?We should organise self-defence classes similar to krav maga and mobile security so that the nasty racists know they can't just walk up to a Muslim without any repercussions. These sorts of acts are usually committed by the cowards and there has to be some sort of deterrence.

Can Malala in UK do something about this and give a global attention to this. Afterall, a Muslim woman has been cowardly attacked.

What a disgusting attack.

East London seems to be the epicentre of such attacks.

In March, a Freedom of Information request to the Metropolitan Police suggested Newham was the London borough with the most recorded acid attacks, with 398 incidents between 2011 and 2016.

Tower Hamlets had the third highest number of acid attacks, with 84 incidents recorded between 2011 and 2016.

Tower Hamlets had the third highest number of acid attacks, with 84 incidents recorded between 2011 and 2016.

The figures also showed a sharp rise in acid attacks across London as a whole, with 431 incidents in the capital in 2016, compared to 261 in 2015.

A group of white chavs who were stopped at the pedestrian crossing in their car sprayed my sister and my niece with some water. She was wearing an abaya at the time and she feared the worst. This was in Yorkshire. She was too frightened to take down the number plate and the make and model of the car. She's a strong-minded woman and has shrugged it off easier than I have. To think the same guys would probably at some point have to be treated by here at the local hospital, she's a nurse.

I hope that's the worst it gets round here to be honest. If there are further incidents here it will definitely kick off.

Mile End acid attack: Two seriously injured after being targeted with corrosive substance

Two people have been seriously injured in an acid attack in an east London street.

A woman, aged in her late 30s, and a man, in his early 20s, were left with serious burns after they were attacked in Mile End in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Scotland Yard said police were called to reports of an acid attack in Burdett Road shortly before 2.15am.

The victims were taken to an east London hospital for their injuries after a corrosive substance was thrown over them.

Their injuries are thought to be serious but non-life threatening.

Burdett Road was sealed off and forensic officers were at the scene investigating for several hours.

A Met Police spokesman said: “No arrests have been made. Enquiries are ongoing.

“There are no other reported injuries.”

I wonder if it's another race based attack? Hope the injuries aren't too serious, shocking dreadful stuff.

Governments gonna have to crack down hard on the purchase of acid, I've seen a few change.com petitions flying around.

Police have said they don't believe it's a hate crime apparently, although how an acid attack can be anything else I'm not sure. Maybe it was just a casual acid attack while the perpetrator was strolling down the street whistling as he went.

Can Malala in UK do something about this and give a global attention to this. Afterall, a Muslim woman has been cowardly attacked.

Good call actually. Malala has been instrumental in highlighting the plight of Pakistani women, she could surely bring some awareness to this issue which faces being sidelined as a hate crime rather than a targeted attack which has most likely been inspired by Islamophobia.

Acid attacks are so abject that they should be dealt with draconian, para-legal measures by the victim's immediate and mediate surrounding.

Disgusting.

I hope this filthy animal who carried this out gets whipped for life.

Absolutely horrific.

Thoughts go out to the victims and their families.

Had no idea that acid is so readily available in West too. Thought it was a SC thing.

East London acid attack: John Tomlin arrested

A man named as the chief suspect in an acid attack in east London has handed himself in to police.

Two people suffered "life-changing" injuries when a corrosive substance was thrown on to them through their car windows.

Cousins Resham Khan and Jameel Muhktar, 37, had been celebrating Ms Khan's 21st birthday before the attack.

John Tomlin, 24, has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent, the Metropolitan Police said.

He walked into an east London police station on Sunday and remains in custody.

Ms Khan, a student at Manchester Metropolitan University, and Mr Muhktar suffered severe burns to the face and body in the attack on 21 June.

Police said they had stopped at traffic lights when a man approached them and threw the toxic substance at Ms Khan through the window.

The attacker then threw more of the acid at Mr Muhktar before fleeing the scene.

A teenager has been arrested after corrosive substances were thrown in people's faces in five attacks across north-east London.

Two men on a moped carried out the attacks in Hackney, Stoke Newington and Islington on Thursday night during a spree which lasted less than 90 minutes, police said.

The victims were taken to hospital, with one of them suffering "life-changing injuries".

Police said the attacks were linked.

The teenager is being held at an east London police station on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and robbery.

The attacks began at 22:25 BST on Thursday in Hackney Road.

A 32-year-old man on a moped was left with facial injuries after another moped, with two male riders, pulled up alongside him and threw a corrosive substance in his face.

One of the men stole his moped and the other drove away on the vehicle they arrived on.

The Met said it was awaiting an update on the extent of the victim's injuries. Inquiries are ongoing.

Had no idea that acid is so readily available in West too. Thought it was a SC thing.

You can get strong acid in hardware shops.

Or from a car battery.

But Commissioner Cressida D!ck of the Met said this morning on LBC that acid attacks are a recent development in the UK.

Stunned by the frequency, barbarity and horror of these acid attacks.

The human race is going well and truly down the toilet.

Backward mentality

Act of proper cowards who have no avenue of getting through their point without resorting to throwing stuff in peoples faces

Stratford acid attack: six people injured in incident at London station

Six people have been injured in multiple acid attacks at a busy London station as police launch a manhunt to find the culprits.

Officers were called just before 8pm on Saturday to Stratford Station in London, near to the Olympic Park, to reports of multiple victims having being sprayed with acid at locations around the station and busy shopping centre.

A spokesperson for Scotland Yard said: "We were called to the area around Westfield Stratford Shopping Centre to reports of a group of males spraying what is believed to be a noxious substance.

"A number of people have been reported injured at different locations - believed to be six people. We await further details. "

Witnesses at the scene said an argument broke out among a group of people.

A man who gave his name as Hossen, 28, a Burger King assistant manager, said he saw a victim and his friend, a known local homeless man, run into the fast food outlet bathroom "to wash acid off his face".

He said: "There were cuts around his eyes and he was trying to chuck water into them."

London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade have attended.

Police have arrested one man on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and are searching for others.

Inside the Burger King toilets, water could be seen all over the floor, along with toilet tissue and medical gloves.

Outside, people gathered at police cordons while victims were being treated behind a blue screen.

Many of those at the scene, kept inside the cordon by police, were visibly upset by the incident.

One said: "I can't speak now, my mate's been hurt."

This has become a major problem in London; not such an issue in the north at the moment but scary times at the moment.

Acid to be classed as 'highly dangerous weapon'

Acid is to be classified as a "highly dangerous weapon" under new sentencing guidelines, after a surge in acid attacks.

The Sentencing Council says corrosive substances, such as acid, which is used to cause injury or for a person to have the intention of causing injury, is classed as a "highly dangerous weapon".

Also under the new guidelines published on Thursday, under-18s could face tougher punishments if they film their crimes to post them on social media.

Public concern over the use of acid as a weapon has intensified following a flurry of incidents.

The Home Office said it was making good progress on implementing its action plan to tackle the use of corrosive substances in violent attacks.

A spokesman added: "We will shortly announce our response to last year's consultation on new legislation banning sales of corrosives to under 18s and introducing a new offence for possessing corrosive products in a public space.

"In the meantime we have put in place a set of voluntary commitments with retailers to restrict access to most harmful products."

In January some retailers agreed not to sell products containing harmful levels of corrosive substances to under-18s in an attempt to stop acid being used as a weapon.

Government proposed legislation will prevent minors from purchasing products which contain potentially harmful levels of acid.

The ban will see under-18s unable to buy the following products:

Products that contain sulphuric acid such as drain cleaners/unblockers
Products that contain hydrochloric acid (10% and over) such as brick and patio cleaners
Products that contain sodium hydroxide (12% and over) such as paint strippers

Boy, 3, seriously hurt in 'evil acid attack' in Worcester as three men hunted

A three-year-old boy has been seriously injured in a suspected acid attack in a shop in Worcester, police have said.

He is being treated in hospital for serious burns to his arm and face.

The boy was "deliberately targeted" in the attack, which happened at around 2.15pm on Saturday in Home Bargains at Shrub Hill Retail Park, Tallow Hill.

West Mercia Police have released images of three men they would like to speak to and have appealed for anyone with information about the incident.

Chief Superintendent Mark Travis said: "At this time we are treating this as a deliberate attack on a three-year-old boy."

He said the incident will "rightly shock the local community" and that police are carrying out a thorough investigation to identify those responsible.

The motive of the attack is unknown.

An ambulance arrived at the scene in eight minutes and crew assessed the boy's injuries.

After treatment, he was taken to hospital in Worcester. There is no update on his condition.

Officers are working to establish exactly what happened and exactly what the substance involved was.

A 39-year-old man from Wolverhampton has been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm.

"The three men in the photo may have information vital to our investigation," Mr Travis added.

"I am sure someone will recognise them and I would urge anyone with information to contact us as a matter of urgency."

Worcester City Council leader Marc Bayliss described the attack as "absolutely pure evil".

He added: "Worcester is not that sort of place. We are a quintessential small English city.

"I have never heard of an acid attack in Worcester so this is absolutely not something we have any experience of."

Mr Bayliss urged anyone with information to come forward.

"Think if this was a member of your family, an innocent child, a three-year-old probably scarred or damaged for life by this. We need to bring the perpetrators to justice, and quickly."

I am confused. Why are Brits attacking Brits? What will happen to us Desi SC folks if our role model Brits are doing this. You Brits need to think about about the impact your behavior is having on Desis and cease immediately.

I think the police is not revealing the ethnicity of the child because they fear there will be a huge backlash in the EDL demonstration that is taking place nearby the incident in worcester. Shocking really, I personally would feel outraged to know a young 3 year old muslim boy has been the target of an acid attack. Not sure how this would go down with the Muslim community in England

Acid attack on three-year-old boy: Three men arrested.

Three men have been arrested after a three-year-old was seriously injured in a suspected acid attack.

The boy was in a pushchair when he was "deliberately attacked" at Home Bargains in Worcester at 14:15 BST on Saturday.

West Mercia Police said the men, aged 22, 25 and 26, were arrested in London on suspicion of conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm.

Paramedic Nick Carson, who treated the boy, told the BBC it was "horrific".

Doctors discharged the toddler from hospital on Sunday afternoon.

He was treated for serious burns to his arm and face and the "long-term implications" of the his injuries are unknown, the force said.

Ch Supt Mark Travis said the motive for the attack is so far "unclear".

In an exclusive interview, the paramedic said the liquid used in the attack was "pink in colour, had quite a strong smell - not a bleach or acidy type smell".

Mr Carson said the toddler was distressed to begin with, but calmed down very quickly once he was treated. The mother, he said, was "concerned but not panicking".

The three arrested men were detained at an address in Walthamstow, the Metropolitan Police said.

A 39-year-old man from Wolverhampton arrested on Sunday on suspicion of conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm remains in police custody.

"Acid or a corrosive substance" was either "thrown at or sprayed towards" the boy when he was with his family at Shrub Hill Retail Park, in Tallow Hill, police said.

Ch Supt Travis said the family is receiving specialist medical and police support.

"We are hoping the injuries won't be life changing. They are serious and at the moment it's just that little bit too soon to say, but things look positive.

"Everything that can be done to provide support is being done, support for the family has been great.

"I absolutely understand the community will be concerned, these are life changing incidents, this is something that lasts forever and we need to send a message that this is unacceptable."

He said the force was keeping "an open mind as to the circumstances of the incident" and was still "appealing for anyone with information to come forward".

The boy was with his mother at the time, and staff and shoppers tried to help before paramedics arrived.

Police rejected any link between the attack and a protest by The English Defence League which took place in the centre of Worcester on Saturday, against plans to build a mosque in the city.

Ch Supt Travis said: "We have looked at all the possible links and at the moment there is nothing to suggest there is any link between the activity on Saturday with the protests and this particular incident."

Bev Sidhu, who was in the area at the time, said: "The supervisor from Home Bargains came and said, 'Look, there was a hazardous acid used on someone'.

"But that's all they let us know until the next day, but obviously it was just unnerving really, because it was just confusion."

A Home Bargains spokesman said: "Our thoughts are with this young child and his family at this very difficult time."

West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed it was called to the scene and liaised with the Hazardous Area Response Team for specialist advice.

They treated the boy at the shop before he was taken to hospital.

Robin Walker, MP for Worcester, described the attack as "horrific".

"The shock will be universal. Anyone conducting such an attack on a small child is just appalling," he said.

Has anybody come up with some sort of motive for such a mind blowing act of cruelty? I see one of the men arrested was 39 yrs old so hardly some idiot youngster blowing off steam. I'm surprised there hasn't been more serious questioning about this in the media.

One of the men arrested is the child’s father. After a domestic incident the mother left the house with her child and this was the father’s reaction.

It seems the mother was the actual target.

The law needs to be more tough with regards to these individuals. A no nonsense legal system deters crime.

So the so called "Great" britain isn't great after all, it is as backward as the most backward regions of the world, pathetic country

'Great' refers to the aggregation of countries on this island into political union. For example, Scotland and England joined to form Great Britain in 1705 CE.

This acid attack horror is a recent development. Five years ago, you never heard of it in the UK. Not even hardcore gangsters would do such a thing.

As James says the law must be strengthened from GBH to atempted murder to deter this horrific type of assault.

So what changed, how did this type of assault creep into the UK, is it because the gun laws are so tough that people have developed ways to increase the level of violence.

Everything you know about acid attacks is wrong

There is a common understanding of acid attacks in the UK that goes something like this: the attacker is male; the victim female. Both are South Asian, and the violence has something to do with the man’s so-called ‘honour'.

But the most comprehensive set of data yet on acid attacks in London paints a different picture.

Statistics released by London’s Metropolitan Police to the BBC provide a breakdown of every recorded acid attack over a 15-year period by age, gender, ethnicity, borough, hate crime and outcome. It’s the fullest picture yet of the capital’s suspects and victims.

The findings include:

The suspect was male 74% of the time and victim was male 67% of the time.

Just 6% of suspects were Asian.

Only one so-called ‘honour’ attack was recorded in 15 years.

Four out of five violent offences never reached trial.

The figures appear to contradict a belief that a relative majority of acid attacks involve the South Asian diaspora.

“Definitely not,” said Detective Superintendent Mike West, the Metropolitan police lead on acid attacks, who has reviewed the figures. “That does not ring true. It’s very mixed from various religions, backgrounds, different victims, different offenders.”

The UK has one of the highest recorded rates of violent acid attacks in the world.

The figures show that after a 10-year decline, they surged between 2012 and 2016 by more than 500%. Just 73 were recorded in 2012; four years later, they hit a high of 469.

Men as victims

The victims of London’s violent acid attacks are overwhelmingly male. Four out of five victims in 2016 were men, according to the statistics.

From 2007 to 2011, around 50 men and 50 women were attacked each year. Since 2012, however, the number of attacks on men has increased dramatically each year, peaking at 352 in 2016.

The statistics paint an unusual picture, according to experts familiar with acid attack data around the world.

Jaf Shah is the executive director of Acid Survivors Trust International (ASTI), a charity that seeks to end acid violence.

In the 15 years since his organisation was established, he has noted a familiar pattern to acid attacks around the world that is outlined prominently on ASTI’s website: “Acid violence is a form of violence that has a disproportionate impact on women.”

“In many regions of the world, most attacks relate to gender violence,” said Shah. “These attacks are often linked to rejected sexual advances, or marriage proposals.”

“However, this does not appear to be the case in the UK.”

When it comes to suspects, men have consistently made up the majority, accounting for nearly three quarters over the whole of the last 15 years, and 77% in 2016. The proportion of female suspects has collapsed from around 20% ten years ago to just 2% last year, while the proportion of unknown suspects has doubled in the last 10 years to 20%.

This is likely to be related to a rise in moped gangs, according to Dr Simon Harding, associate professor in criminology at the University of West London.

“The assailant may be wearing a mask, balaclava or moped helmet so [the victim] might not see them,” said Dr Harding.

South Asia

“The [2012] Oscar-winning documentary Saving Face raised awareness of acid violence at a global level,” said Jaf Shah. “And as a result many people, at a sub-conscious level, may associate acid attacks with Asians generally and Pakistanis in particular.”

Globally, most attacks occur in South Asia, according to Shah – and this may have contributed to an assumption that London’s Asian diaspora is involved in a majority of UK attacks.

“There has been a fairly relentless rise in the number of alt-right sites and blogs linking acid attacks to Muslim, Asians and migrants, and this has clearly gained some traction,“ said Shah.

Type “Asian acid attacks” into Twitter and there are hundreds of people conflating acid attacks with London’s Asian population.

In reality, just 6% of all suspects in London over the last 15 years were Asian.

For the same period (2002-16), 'White Europeans' comprised 32% of suspects, and African Caribbeans 38% of suspects. About one in five suspects remain unknown – either because they can’t be identified, or because the victim has refused to identify them.

“The figures do suggest a lower number of Asian offenders,” said Dr Tara Young, a Criminal Justice and Criminology lecturer at the University of Kent. “However, there is a growing proportion of unknowns – and we don’t know if these contain a significant number of White European perpetrators or Asian perpetrators.”

The number of Asian victims is 421 – around one fifth of the 2,196 total for the 15-year period. Almost half the victims (987) are White European, and one quarter (557) are African Caribbean.

“With the adoption of acid throwing by younger, gang-orientated people, it’s being used to incapacitate victims so you can steal their moped, phone or laptop,” said Dr Simon Harding.

Hate crimes

Acid attacks have not only been characterised as being perpetrated by Asians. They have also been increasingly associated with hate crimes against Asians.

On 21 June, aspiring model Resham Khan and her cousin Jameel Mukhtar were sprayed with acid through their car window in Newham, East London.

The attack was labelled a hate crime on social media, and concerns were immediately raised that Newham’s Muslim community was being targeted.

Comment pieces and news stories speculating that white supremacist acid throwers were targeting Muslims all over the UK began appearing on news sites and blogs.

“We’ve seen no evidence of it – not only in the data, but obviously in the [community] intelligence as well,” said Detective Superintendent West.

Between 2002 and 2016 there were 32 racial incidents, four anti-Semitic racial incidents, and two other faith-related hate crimes.

Honour attacks

Acid attacks in the UK are frequently linked to honour crimes by the media – and occasionally politicians.

In July, Minister Sarah Newton, who has recently been moved to the Department for Work and Pensions from her previous role as minister for crime, safeguarding and vulnerability, told BBC 5 live: “These substances are used in so-called honour-based violence."

The statistics from London's police record just one attack – in 2011 – as an honour crime.

“It’s not something that we’re seeing,” said Detective Superintendent Mike West.

Jaf Shah urged caution, however. “It’s quite possible that honour attacks in the UK are simply not being reported for fear of reprisal,” he said.

Police recorded 284 ‘domestic incident’ related acid attacks in the 15-year period from 2002-16 – just 11% of the violent acid attack total.

This low rate, coupled with a decline in the average age of suspects to 21, suggests that acid violence is increasingly gang related, according to Dr Harding.

“A lot of it is youth criminality more than things occurring in a domestic setting,” he said.

Acid throwing dates to Victorian times, he added – and Britain is witnessing a “new phase” of the violent attacks.

“We’ve had acid throwing in this country for over 200 years, and there’s been a new development of it,” said Dr Harding. “But it’s not new and it’s not imported.”
