Adivasi man beaten by mob, dies in Kerala: Selfie taken moments before he died angers public

On Thursday evening, A Madhu, a 30-year-old tribal man from Kerala's Attappadi region collapsed and died inside a police jeep as he was being taken to a Government Tribal Specialty Hospital at Kottathara.

Madhu had been handed over to the police by an irate mob that had attacked him, accusing him of theft.

But more than the mob violence and lynching, what has shocked Kerala are photographs that emerged on social media, which were reportedly taken just before Madhu was attacked with sticks by the mob.

One of the pictures show a frail man (Madhu) who is tied up using a lungi, his shirt torn. Another man is seen talking to Madhu as they stand against a rock. Unperturbed by whatever is happening, a third young man who has clicked the selfie photograph can be seen smiling at the camera.

A selfie taken just before a man was beaten to death?

In a video that is also circulating on social media, a group of men can be seen hounding Madhu and questioning him. One of them pulls out provisions - from eggs to curry powders - from a bag, accusing Madhu of stealing those items.

Agali police confirmed to TNM that Madhu died soon after he was handed over to the police by the mob, who claim to have "caught" him.

However, despite videographic evidence of the mob surrounding Madhu and questioning him, the police are yet to ascertain whether Madhu was beaten up by the mob.

"Madhu has previously been accused of robbing shops and we were trying to nab him for quite sometime. He has 3 cases registered against him. The locals had got CCTV visuals of Madhu stealing from a shop. A few locals spotted him in the hills, tied him up and brought him to the town. Then they informed us and we reached the spot to take him into custody," Agali CI told TNM.

However, while Madhu was being taken to the police station, he started vomiting.

"We then took him to the hospital. By the time we reached there, he had lost consciousness. The doctors then declared him brought dead," the police said.

Confirming that Madhu was beaten up, Agali DySP however, said that they couldn't yet ascertain whether Madhu died because of it.

"The people in the mob were all locals of Agali, not from outside. But we can't conclude that the death was caused by that. We can confirm the cause of death only after getting the post mortem report. He used to wander around and lived in the forest and caves. During the night he would steal rice from provision stores in the area. There is a theft case against him at Agali police station. On Wednesday, he stole rice from a store at Kalkkanda. On Thursday night, the mob went to the forest and beat him up," Agali DySP T K Subramanian said.

Inquest procedures are over and Madhu's body will be soon be sent for post mortem. Although several reports stated that Madhu was mentally ill, the police couldn't confirm this.

Anger against mob

The photographs and selfie of the mob has created much anger on social media.

Tribal welfare activist Dhanya Raman said that Madhu was mentally ill. In a Facebook post, she demanded that the CM and DGP visit the spot.

In a Facebook post, Manila C Mohan, a journalist with Mathrubhumi weekly says:

"Those who don't have power won't understand the powerless, they won't understand that the powerless have the right to live. They aren't guilty, but they have the silent pleasure of conducting a murder."

A fat faced man taking a selfie with a malnourished hungry person who had become desperate enough to steal to feed himself. This, before finishing him off completely thereby completing the cycle of exploitation and degradation of poor in this society. Its quite Symbolic.

Mob justice is the reality in south India.

Not just thieves, but wife cheaters, eve teasers, chain snatchers are all tied this way and beaten by everyone with chappals.

People have no faith in police as they think police are collided with the criminals.

Pathetic! Humanity bows it's head in shame over such torture and murder of an innocent man. He stole because he was hungry and also seemed to have psychological problems. Instead of feeding him and taking him to hospital they mercilessly kill him. No decent man would even do that to someone from a supposed enemy country as it's against human nature. Tribal people in India are kept on the margin and treated like sub humans. I am rapidly losing hope in human beings!

Extremely tragic news, the people involved should be severely punished.

Also I thought Sehwag was only anti- Pakistan but its sad to see him use such a sad incident to instigate communal hate by spreading misinformation.

How is this a communal incident? It's widely known the killers were Muslim. Do you suggest Muslim criminals not be named?
 
Sehwag is a complete idiot forever humiliating himself online. Just like his "baap baap hota hai" comment again he put his foot in his mouth by only naming the Muslim perpetrators when the majority responsible for this crime were non Muslim's, most likely Hindu's. Like before he ends up embarrassed with egg on his face.

TBH, the guy who posted the selfie is an IUML (muslim league) activist/campaigner and the local MLA has already come to his defence (he's innocent, he only took the selfie :facepalm::facepalm:) as well. Its a sad fact that political power be it hindus/christians or muslims , empowers people to pull of acts like these with Impunity. Especially when you know a dark skinned tribal is not going to do anything back.

But what Sehwag did is proper communal baiting. The list of arrested has both hindus and christians and allegedly Govt Forest Department officers were present when Madhu was getting thrashed. So the rot runs way too deep beyond any one religion .

Not really . The mob was almost 15-20 people, with good 'representation' from all 3 faiths. It just goes onto show how 'united' indians (keralites for that matter) are united in their mistreatment of the tribals whom we ourselves pushed into the jungles .
 
When you are dying of hunger, stealing is GOD's given rights as much as freedom of speech/expression. Even Umar Ibn Al-Khattab (R.A) forgave people who stole camel to satiate their hungers and instead imposed strictness and warning upon owner of the establishment that drove people to resort to stealing.

Such a world that people with money don't steal while people with no money steal to satiate their hungers are criminal.

Not surprising from this joke of a human being. He was already mannerless, indecent and insensitive and now he is showing that he is communal as well.

Not tribals mate it’s about the poor.. Even a poor thief in city gets bashed and beaten up sometimes they die too.. Too much power culture, sometimes you look back in past and present and maybe just maybe what our Pakistani trolls here say is true..
