Afghanistan [342 & 260] beat Bangladesh [205 & 173] by 224 runs in one-off Test match in Bangladesh

Day 3: Stumps - Afghanistan lead by 374 runs

Afghanistan recovered from being 4/2 in the second innings to extend their lead over Bangladesh to 374 at the end of day three.

Debutant Ibrahim Zadran made his maiden Test half-century and found support in Asghar Afghan, who struck his second fifty of the match. With Rashid Khan unleashing another flurry of boundaries, the visitors went to stumps on Saturday, 6 September, at 237/8.

This comes after they bundled Bangladesh out for 205 in their first innings. Rashid became the first man to strike a fifty and take a five-wicket haul in his first batting and bowling innings as captain, and he'll want little more than to round it off with a Test win.

The hosts, overnight on 194/8, lasted a little under four overs on the third morning. Mohammad Nabi struck with the third ball of the day, castling Taijul Islam to end the ninth-wicket stand at 48. The captain completed the formalities, a googly trapping last man Nayeem Hasan in front. It was Rashid's second Test five-for in just his third match.

Mosaddek Hossain was left stranded on 48, the team deficit at 137 runs.

Shakib Al Hasan, the Bangladesh captain, raised hopes of a fightback by dismissing opener Ihsanullah and Rahmat Shah in consecutive balls. Rahmat, the first-innings centurion, came down the wicket to drive first ball, only to hand the bowler an easy catch.

Zadran and Afghan combined for a stand of 108
Seventeen-year-old Zadran, though, settled in and showed his intent, slamming Taijul Islam for a straight six right after surviving a review for lbw. Afghan kept up with him, the duo marrying defence and shot-making to strike a combined six sixes between them.

Taijul, having been slammed for another six over extra-cover by the youngster, was the one to break the fourth-wicket stand at 108. He had Afghan edging to leg slip before Nayeem got Zadran 13 short of his century, caught at long-on going for another big hit.

There was little respite for Bangladesh. Rashid (24) creamed five boundaries off Hasan before being dismissed, and with Afsar Zazai prevailing unscathed on 34*, the hosts must take two more wickets on day four before looking to chase down a target that is edging towards the ominous 400-mark.

Embarrassing performance yet again. It is a shame BD is part of Test championship despite this type of performance.

Take away Test status from BD. Give it to Netherlands.

100 up for Bang but the battle continues ... long long way to go for Bangladesh batsmen... only hope Sakib is still on the crease

Skipper Rashid Khan and left-arm wrist-spinner Zahir Khan shared five wickets between them to take Afghanistan further close to their first ever overseas win in Test cricket.

Chasing a victory target of 398, Bangladesh find themselves in a precarious position of 136/6 at the end of fourth day's play in the ongoing Test in Chittagong. Skipper Shakib Al Hasan and Soumya Sarkar were unbeaten at 39 and 0 respectively, when the fourth rain interruption of the day forced early stumps on Sunday, 8 September. The hosts will be hoping for more rain as four wickets separate them from a defeat.

Resuming the day at 237/8, Afghanistan could add only 23 more runs to the total, as the innings finally folded out for 260 in 90.1 overs. Wicket-keeper batsman Afsar Zazai backed up his 41 in the first innings with a gritty 48 in the second, powering his side to a healthy 397-run lead. Skipper Shakib Al Hasan was the pick of the bowlers for Bangladesh with three wickets, while Mehidy Hasan, Taijul Islam and Nayeem Hasan bagged two scalps each.

Bangladesh had a decent start to their second innings, going into lunch at 30/0, before spinners took control in the final two sessions of play. Liton Das was trapped plumb in front by Zahir for 9, after having survived a caught behind call on review earlier in the over. Mosaddek Hossain, who was promoted up the order soon followed, hitting one to Asghar Afghan at long off, giving Zahir his second wicket.

Skipper Rashid then took control, striking twice to remove the experienced Mushfiqur Rahim and Mominul Haque within a span of three overs, as Bangladesh stood at 102/4 at tea.

All-rounder Mohammad Nabi struck in the third over of the final session, trapping the set Shadman Islam leg-before for 41. Rashid then deceived Mahmudullah with a wrong'un, gaining his eighth wicket of the match. Shakib however, continued his resistance, mixing caution with aggression, hitting four boundaries during his 46-ball stay at the crease.

With the forecast appearing gloomy, Afghanistan will hope for the skies to clear soon on the final day, as they eye a historic win and with it, a fitting farewell for all-rounder Mohammad Nabi, who makes his final appearance in whites on Monday.

LOL at Bangladesh team.

Congratulations, Afghanistan. Very amazing performance.

Rain has robbed off a win for the Afgans. What a pity. Feeling sorry for them. BD deserved a loss

I find it hilarious MMHS is willing to write full essays on Pakistan cricket demise and suddenly whenever a game where bangladesh is in trouble or is getting embarrased he completely goes away on leave from the forum. The pattern has happened at least half a dozen time for this to be a coincidence.

Now watch him return few days later with some work related excuse.

Please tag me next time if you are to use my name.

Normally, between June to September, we are busy here and that’s definitely not for work related issues - people living in Canada can explain you why. And no, I have never leaved PP based on Bangladesh's performance - not even during the first Test against Zimbabwe last year. The issue is the amount of rubbish sprouted here in BD match thread that I restrain from posting here - I have posted here in PP in limited capacity during this game or for that matter during that ZIM Test.

And, it took me few minutes to respond you despite not tagging me - I guess you understand that I am well aware of what is happening around & what is written here, even on Sunday night keeping an eye on the scores.

You actually have very little clue about what is writing on demise or what is on praise, therefore it’s useless to explain you - next time try to read my essays in proper spirit & come back to ask questions, I’ll try my best to justify.

Don't take it personally but it's difficult to take your critique on Pakistan cricket seriously when you don't judge your own side with the same critical eye. 20 years on they still are getting humbled at home by Zimbabwe and Afghanistan despite enjoying their most stable years economically and financially with a side which has been playing together for years and could be called it's so called golden generation .

I am more than critical about my team, and I do praise every team on purpose. The problem is, when one team is bashed for every reason, it’s difficult to join the party. I can do exactly the same, which is the favourite past time of PP, but it’s distasteful. I do praise AFGs for their development and I didn’t join the band wagon to take their cloths off during 0-9 WC; that’s the difference.

Thanks for your detailed explanation I am glad I at least got your attention and was finaly able to get you to post in a match thread involving your home side.

Afghans have indeed improved but don't think they can win against top-mid tier test teams yet. They can of course whitewash the likes of Bangladesh, Ireland though.

Man I would like a proper test+ODI series between Pakistan & Afghanistan. Would be a competitive series IMO.

BD fans should hope they lose here since a draw due to rain will allow their incompetent board to sweep this under the carpet

Slight drizzle but the play goes on for now... getting close and close .... would be heart braking for Afg if they dont win after how they were placed last night

Would love to read a good long essay from MMHS bhai on this effort from BD.
He is one of the best writers on this forum and would love his in depth views on his home team just as he does for Pakistan.:)

224 runs! Cant take anything away from Afghans they played beautifully. BCB gotta start sorting their pitches out.

Bangladesh is a much better team then Afghanistan. But, thanks to the pitch they played it right into the hands of Afghanistan who's spinners are better. Having said that Bangladesh deserves to lose for producing pathetic pitches like these to in order to suit them to the maximum.

This better wake up BCB. If they want to compete in test arena they better give the test team the attention it deserves.

Afghans batted and bowled really well. All-round good performance. Multiple players contributed significantly which bodes well for future.

Good performance by Afghanistan ! They are serious team, they performed well in asia cup 2018, WC 19 and now beating bangladesh in their home is some real serious talent !

beating champions trophy winners fair & square in a warm up match & champions trophy winners winning a simple match by huffing & puffing , in fact winning just by luck actually .. these things r considered indeed a good performance

Yes obviously warm up matches are what determines the WC achievements of the teams. If I remember correctly your team also huffed and puffed in WC 19 and werent able to win in Asia Cup 19.

By any standards 0-9 in WC is not a good WC especially when on top of that one needs to bring in warm up games to prove a point. Its better to take a step back when an argument is flawed or maybe you wrote in a flow (Giving benefit of doubt to you) because there is noway 0-9 is a good WC and even Afgnan players and management admitted that and thus you see a change in captain otherwise why would you replace a captain with such a good WC.

Afghanistan beat both their opponents and the weather as they took the final four Bangladesh wickets in 17.2 overs on a rain-affected final day at Chattogram to seal their second victory in the format.

With Bangladesh resuming the day on 136/6 needing over 250 runs to win, Afghanistan were firm favourites to register a second Test win in just their third Test match. Only 13 balls were possible before the rain fell and threatened to curtail the prospects of an Afghanistan victory. Both lunch and tea were called early as the chances of a draw increased.

Eventually, past 4pm local time, the umpires confirmed that a maximum of 18.3 overs would be bowled, weather permitting. With the light fading, even if the rain stayed away there was a very real prospect of the day and Test prematurely being called to an end due to bad light.

Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan was likely to be a major obstacle in Afghanistan’s quest to victory. The all-rounder was set to resume play on 44* and had looked in sublime touch prior to the rain delays. Zahir Khan, a 20-year old spinner making his Test debut, got Afghanistan off to the perfect start after play resumed, taking the wicket of Shakib with the first ball bowled in the final session. Shakib, looking to cut, could only edge the ball through to Afsar Zazai behind the stumps. If Afghanistan’s spirits were in any way dampened by the weather, Zahir’s breakthrough certainly lifted them.

Mehidy Hasan and Soumya Sarkar both resisted in a resilient eighth wicket partnership that frustrated Afghanistan. The Khans, Rashid and Zahir, bowled well, beating the bat and extracting leading edges on numerous edges, only to see the ball sneak past the bat or fall agonisingly short of a fielder. Rashid was the man to make the crucial breakthrough, taking his fourth wicket of the innings (and ninth of the game) trapping Mehidy lbw for 12.

The Afghanistan skipper repeated the trick in his next over, this time dismissing Taijul Islam for nought. Afghanistan were now just one wicket away from victory. With the light continuing to fade, time running out and a man with three international centuries at the crease in Sarkar, the result was still by no means a given. Sarkar and no. 11 Nayeem Hasan held firm and with 24 balls left of the Test, Bangladesh were within touching distance of an unlikey draw.

It wasn’t to be though as Rashid Khan induced an inside edge from Sarkar that was snaffled by Ibrahim Zadran at short-leg to give Afghanistan their most impressive win yet in Test cricket. No team in the history of the game has recorded their second Test victory in quicker time than Afghanistan.

It was the perfect way for the team to bid goodbye to one of their most influential figures in Test cricket, Mohammad Nabi. Rashid Khan dedicated his Player of the Match award to Nabi who retires from Test cricket after this game. The day also capped the end of a remarkable captaincy debut for Rashid Khan. Not only did Afghanistan notch their first away victory in the format against more experienced opposition, but his all-round performance that saw him take 11 wickets and score 75 runs across the Test was vital.

Congratulations to Afghanistan.

Bangladesh should voluntarily withdraw from Test championship and let Afghanistan take the spot. Embarrassing performance from them.

Well done Afghanistan. They are more than capable of turning teams over in Asian Tests and cannot be underestimsted in these conditions.

taking indian team to almost cleaners, losing to CT17 winners by a wisker ... not a bad tournament for some1 playing it for the 1st time at this level

2nd time at this level actually, and getting close doesn't mean anything, you either win or you don't. We got close to the semis, but in the end we didn't make it, so it doesn't really matter how close we got. If Afghanistan bagged a win or 2 we could've said they had a decent world cup.

Wow congratulations to Afghans, some of em might not even realize how huge this is.

Massive phainty from Afghanistan.

Bangladesh strength is to prepare slow turners. Something Afghans relish as their spin attack is superior to Banglas.
I did manage to catch the highlights of Afghan batting in their first innings and Rahmat Shah is an excellent batsman. Asghar is a good player, but his shot selection is off most of the times.

Afghanistan showing a scary level of progress. They are a force on subcontinental tracks.

Great win for Afghanistan. They can;t rely on spinners only if they want to show some progress outside of Asia.

Bangladesh are completely in chaos right now. I don't know what went wrong since later half of the World Cup.

I think Ireland, Scotland, Netherlands, and even Nepal can beat this present team. They are down and out psychologically.

As Afghanistan cricket follower this does not come as a surprise. In this game Afghanistan was more challenged by the rain then Bangladesh.

Before the test Afghanistan A played BD A.

The 2 unofficial test match series ended 1-0 to Afghanistan.

First match BD A bowled out for 200. Afghanistan were 163/2 when rest of the match was rained off.

Bangladeshi players literally get pampered for every small accomplishment. Afghans, on the other hand, perform so well despite many obstacles. Afghans play with passion and energy and that is something Bangladesh is lacking in currently.

As a Bangladeshi fan, I consider this defeat as one of the darkest moments in our cricket. However, as a cricket fan, I hope this victory will give Afghanistan confidence to topple other top teams.

Shakib Al Hasan, the Bangladesh captain, came down hard on his team's batting performance after their 224-run loss to Afghanistan in the one-off Test in Chattogram on Monday, 9 September.

Afghanistan, led by their spinners, dismissed Bangladesh for 205 and 173, with the 52 scored by Mominul Haque in the first innings the highest score by a Bangladesh batsman in the match. Shakib was scathing. "We probably got zero [out of hundred]," Shakib said, when asked to evaluate the performance. "The Afghans earned a letter mark, and we could not put them under any pressure. It is very difficult to accept [this defeat], it is very disappointing."

Shakib was particularly critical of his own dismissal in the second innings, on the first ball after the rain break in the final hour of play on Monday. He edged one to wicket-keeper Afsar Zazai off Zahir Khan, the left-arm wrist-spinner, when on 44, with his team still needing to survive a minimum of 9.2 overs to avoid defeat.

"The whole blame goes on my shoulders," he said. "I was very nervous when I came out to bat, and got out the first ball and it was my fault. I should have taken more responsibility and could have avoided the cut shot. We had to play only one hour and 10 minutes, and I got out the first ball. So it became harder for the team. The dressing room would have felt more comfortable if I had stayed out."

Shakib also pointed out a tactical error in the 61st over, where Soumya Sarkar took a single off the second ball, leaving the No.11 Nayeem Hasan four balls to survive.

"Soumya put his hand on his head after taking that run," Shakib pointed out. "It means he doesn't understand what he needs to do, what is his role. These things have to be learnt with experience. And how many days it will take to learn ... not easy to say."

The World Test Championship and T20 World Cup are up ahead, so we should plan for the next four years.
Shakib Al HAsan

Furthermore, Shakib reiterated that he was not keen on captaining the side, but understood the team needed a senior figure in the role. "I am not even mentally prepared to lead in Tests and T20s," Shakib said. "But the team is not in a good shape, so I understand that I have to lead to get it back on track. Otherwise, I am not really interested in leading in any format. I can focus on myself if I am not captaining, which would help the team.

"I want to see the younger lot to take responsibility. We got captaincy at a very young age, but they have now turned 26-27. Unless you give them responsibility, you won't know what they can do. The World Test Championship and T20 World Cup are up ahead, so we should plan for the next four years."
