As you all know that the upcoming Test match between India and Afghanistan. But there is a problem and that is that it’s scheduled to be on June 14 through June 18 2018. And that means Afghani players will be playing cricket on the day of Eid, one of the most important holidays in Islam. Let’s discuss what pertains to this day. Should they have agreed to play on Eid? Are there any other instances of a Muslim nations playing a cricket match on the day/days of Eid? For what I know, this has never happened. It is extremely unusual that this is happening. I wholeheartedly believe that the Afghani players should be in Kabul, Jalalabad, Peshawar, or wherever their home is celebrating Eid ul Fitr with their families and friends. And not in Bangalore under the sun for 8 hours everyday for a few days, playing a cricket match. What is your guys take on this matter?

I am sure Afghan Board knew that the Test match was on Eid and they agreed to it. Players would be on board on this too.
Its a historic day for Afghan Cricket and the players will be itching to play their first Test match ever against some big names.

Didn't we play India at Eden Gardens in 2004 on Eid ?

At least it was Eid over here.

It's not baqra Eid but India will still get slaughtered Inshallah

I am a big fan of Rashid and Mujeeb. Wish they do well. But hopefully India does not lose this. Our bowling is a bit weak with the absence of Bumrah and BK. If it is a green pitch, then we will surely miss BK.

Hopefully Shardul Thakur does not get picked. IMO, Kuldeep should get a chance.

Well, there is the argument that the players should be at home celebrating with their family and friends. The flip side is that Afghanistan cricket team is delivering a gift to its people by playing its first Test match on Eid. This is a cause for celebration in itself.

Is that the ODI match where Salman Butt scored a magnificent century and won the match for us?

No, that was on Chaand Raat. The players flew back to Pakistan that night before the day of Eid commenced. The Afghani players here are actually wasting their full day(s) of Eid in Bangalore playing a Test match.

It should have been avoided. I wonder why the players didn’t protest.

You can the same kind of feeling 3 days after Eid. It’s un-nessecary to be honest. Most people in Afghanistan will be offering prayers, be on road trips to visit family members, having feasts. Not many will be glued to their televisions matching the match. Think about the spectators in Bangalore too, practically no Afghani will fly out there to sit in the stadium and waste their whole day of Eid. I feel the Cricket Boards have made a huge mistake.

After reading the Eid prayers and eating the special Eid breakfast / lunch, family members can sit together to watch the match later.

This is not the first time Afghan players are on tour/playing a game of cricket during Eid.
I don't think it will be a problem. This is a huge occastion and the match itself is eidy for Afghan fans.

Well, for players themselves it is a problem.

Why would it be a problem? It’s an eid gift for them.Playing in their first test match against the No.1 test team. It’s the biggest moment of their careers.Everyone in Afghanistan will be glued to their tellys for the match.

Afghanistan will give their right arm to play a debut test against India on any day. So no problem there.

However, it is insensitive on the part of schedulers to plan games on religious holidays.

OP has a habit of making little things into a big deal. We played on were in England for Eid in 2016 but nobody really complained. If you have a problem, don't play.

I'm sure all the Afghan players are okay with playing on Eid.

Yea, ecstatic to abandon their families and prayers on Eid for cricket.

1. What about all the muslims living in western countries who are forced to work on eid because it's not holyday?
2. What about all the Afghans/Pakistanis who are forced to work on Eid day because you can't shut a country totally, someone has to work. What about the army personal that are deployed in places far away from their families in Pakistan and Afghanistan who cannot be with their families?

Learn to understand being with your family on Eid day is not a luxury everyone have.

Im sure most of them have a big issue with it. The reasons are already given.

Can you name the players? No?

Then stop being annoying.

WRONG! We didn’t play any match on Eid, so please don’t inform the thread.

Here is proof that our players had rest and time to celebrate the holiday with their families upon the tour.

What's wrong with playing cricket on Eid day? A large number of people in other professions do not get time off on their religious occasions.

There’s all the of reasons why it’s wrong, please think man. Isn’t Eid considered holiday in Pakistan/Afghanistan? So by law, many professions DO get time off.

I meant we were in England, I forgot to change it but you could see I said were after. I meant we were in England, which we were, which still means the players were away from family.

According to you, the players should be with their families on the Eid day. but they aren't , are not they?

Don't see a problem. If players can sacrifice by not fasting whilst playing in Ramadan then they can also delay their Eid celebrations by a bit. Also they are entertainers and the biggest demand for entertainment is during holidays. Part and parcel of the job.

It's really very very disappointing for a muslim nation to do so.Not only Eid they will be playing test in the month of holly ramadaan. It means that the players won't be able to do roja in last few days of ramadaan. I knew Afganistan as a pious country. T20 at night is ok though I not in favor of any game in ramadaan but at least players can do roja if they want in day though difficult. But playing a test in ramaddan.!! You are enforcing and encouraging a bunch of Muslims not to do roja which is a great sin.

Test is on/after Eid man, it's there in the title.

Well, the players would still have the evening to celebrate eid with their families whom they might have brought along to india. Also, Afghanistan's first test match, this is an eid gift from the team to the whole of afghanistan.

If i remember correctly, there have been a lot of instances of Pakistan playing on Eid. I remember in Champions Trophy 2006, we played against South Africa in a virtual quarterfinal where we were bundled out for 74 was on Eid.
And u19 Word Cup 2012, Pakistan vs India was also on Eid. We lost that as well sadly.

At OP, I remember we played and beat Australia on Eid Day in then 1999 tri-nation in Australia and then beat India next day.

First match we were bolwed out for 180 odd but we managed to restrict Australia and win the game. Against India Waqar and Saqi chased the target on the last ball. I think target was 195-195

Sorry the tour started in late ‘99 but the actual match was played on Jan 9, 2000 in Brisbane and I remember it was first day of Eid in Pakistan.

They took their families to England. As you can see they have also fulfilled Islamic principles of prayer.

Wrong. It wasn’t on Eid. It was a few days after Eid.

Afghan's can also fulfill Eid prayers by waking up early, I'm sure there are 7AM Eid prayers in India because there sure are in Canada.

The SA match was on 27th October whereas Eid was on 24th October. It was not a Test match.

Sure they can. But what about the rest of the day? Including Salat uz Zuhr, Salat al Asr. And feast with their families?

If the players are okay with it, then who are we to object to it? People need to stop enforcing their beliefs on others.

One thing is sure. The story would’ve been much different if Pakistani players were in this matter, God forbid. Cricket is one of the least important jobs that you can do on Eid. It is nowhere close to the importance, to police officer for say.

Are those prayers not farz on any other day?Might as well not play any games then.

What if the players are not religious themselves?

I think most of the Afghani players aren’t religious. As some religious scholars in Afghanistan discourage sports. I don’t know much but they target sporting events there. In Pakistan there’s nothing like this. Sarfraz Ahmed is a very religious player. Really hard decision for say.

On one hand you have people criticizing players for doing sajdas after mile stones.

Then you have people criticizing players for fasting during ramzan. Also people criticizing players for not fasting.

Now we have people criticizing players for playing on Eid.

Tell me, what are players allowed to do? Let them be man.

Yes. How dare they.

Call the match off and strip them off their test status!

Eid will be for Indian first team here! They can even send out their third team who will easily demolish Afghanistan. Kohli who is already not playing can be replaced by Rahul Dravid!:sanga

Wow what a weird thread.. In professional life in any field people have to work on religious holidays be it wid or Diwali or Christmas.. It happens in every religion in every country someone or the other has to work..

Cricketers are professionals and if their work calls they have to do it..

That's not true. I know several people who work on Christmas Day here in the US. On thanksgiving day, there's always a big NFL game.

Bangalore is cold and soggy. Monsoons have just started. I doubt we are gonna get 5 days without rain. If am not mistaken India plays during Diwali and other festivals too. I think it is monumentous and glorious for Afghanistan that they play a historic test on the day they probably cherish the most. Its a win win situation. The drawback being lack of Afghan support but we in Blore have a lot of Afghans and hopefully some of them stay back on Eid and watch the match.

To be fair, it mostly rains for a 1-2 hour period between 3 PM and 6 PM and that's it. It only remains gloomy the rest of the time minus the rain.

India played their world cup match against West Indies at home on the day of Holi festival in 2011.

I don't see anything wrong with playing a Test match on Eid. Players are getting paid. The fans will be on holiday and able to tune in and watch. The NBA and NFL always have games on Christmas in the US. Much ado about nothing.

Wrong. It wasn’t on Eid. It was a few days after Eid.

No buddy it was on the first day of Eid in Pakistan

Here's a news clipping about the matches, but it had it wrong as well and put the second match, the one between India and Pakistan on Eid's 1st day but in comments section you can see people remember the Australia one, was on the Eid's first day and India one on the second.

Digging more, found this movie, 'Ghar Kab Aao Ge' releasing on the Eid-ul-Fitr's first day on January 9, 2000, same day as the match between Pakistan and Australia

Moon sightings in different parts of the world for Shawal. Just search for Pakistan. In subcontinent Eid was on Jan 9th, 2000

It's a great news for Afghanistan.

I'll always support an act (the match) which bring happiness to people (Afghanistan's fans).

Looking forward to this one as well.

Insha'Allah, Afghanistan will win this game to bring joy to Ummah :malik hehehe

Lunch break for zuhr, tea break for asr, and feasting (which isn't even a part of Islam) can be done after stumps

I'm seriously not sure if you made this thread to be annoying or you really are just stupid. Like a couple minutes of logically thinking could've prevented this while thread.

Best time for them to play.... will be a joyous occasion whatever the result.

Don't think it's that big of an issue. There r many professions where ppl need to work on Eid, Puja, Christmas or other religious occasions. Op seems overly concerned for a petty reason. Actually there r many poor Muslims around the world who wouldn't be able to feed their children if they didn't work on Eid day.

I have seen plenty of people in my country to work hard even on festive days. Compared to those people the sacrifice that these Afghan players r making is almost nothing. They will still be able to celebrate with their families in the afternoon if they wish.

Imagine BCCI and GOI agrees to play with Pakistan and schedules a series or a match during Ramadan, will PCB decline the offer?

I would have bashed Bangladesh cricket board (BCB) in more stern way if BCB had taken the same decision. Who knows BCB may do the same thing in future.

Afghanistan is playing their maiden test match against the top test team in they world. Their board has done an excellent job. When u r a rookie in ur field or just starting ur career u need to sacrifice a lot to achieve the bigger goals.

You can sacrifice sports for a roja in ramadaan but you can't sacrifice a roja for cricket.its only a sport and sport isn't bigger than the order of Allah swt.

If Pakistan football team worked hard for years and managed to earn a game against a top football playing nation e.g. Brazil of the past, we would be completely estatic and would love to watch on Eid day, it would definitely be Eidi for us. This game isn't waste of time for the players or their supporters, Eid comes twice a year, this has come for the first time in their life.

Eid can be celebrated in India as well not as if India is non-Muslim nation. It is a secular country with one of the highest Muslim population! Actually the ones staying in modern countries like USA & other Christian countries should feel more sorry!

They all agreed to this before hand why do any of you have a problem with this? mind your own business

They can still read their Eid prayers. Abandon? you're talking as if they're going to abscond or something.

Why is it even a problem? Many Muslims work on Eid, many Christians work on Christmas etc, and this is actually better from a broadcasting point of view, more people will be off work so able to watch this historic match.

I already explained why it’s a problem. Eid is a holiday.

Then it will be doubly enjoyable for all involved, since it will be a festive occasion. Not too difficult to wrap your head around it.

It’s more of a burden than it’s an enjoyment. Don’t you know that Eid is supposed to be a day of relaxation?

What is your issue if players are chosing to play on eid? A lot of people celebrate eid whilst working at the same time. It's their decision.

Its a personal choice.

Even if someone doesn't want to do Eid prayer that is okay. Shouldn't force your own beliefs on other people.

Eid and cricket don’t usually go hand in hand. In fact, it is a really rare instance so it cannot be compared to a regular daily job. A cricketer doesn’t work 5 days a week like a regular person. They go aboard for extended time spaning several weeks. Having a cricket match EXACTLY on the day of Eid is just absurd.

Who knows how religious they are. Even the least-religious Christians who go to church one a year might go to Christmas Day sermon. I think religions is a very confidential/sensitive topic to discuss on cricket forum, because I will get a lot of hate and abuse from people. From now, I will ignore any purely religion-related comment.

But you already made a statement above that you don’t think they are religious and that even Afghan scholars has forbidden them playing but they still play.

Am just curious on what basis do you judge them ? What knowledge do you have of them and Afghan society ?

Imagine the OP winning $1 m lotto during EID and asked to travel 500 km to claim the cheque. Wondering what he will do.
