Eight teams are perfect. Why add another team?

It is understood that BCCI has plans to add a ninth team to the fold
With the most challenging edition of the IPL ending, the BCCI has seemingly begun preparations for the forthcoming season. In all likelihood, the BCCI is likely to conduct a full auction ahead of the next edition.

The Hindu understands that the BCCI hierarchy has indicated to the franchises informally that a full auction will be scheduled early next year, with an eye on the IPL’s possible return to India, after the 2020 edition was moved to the UAE because of the pandemic.

In fact, according to a BCCI insider, the full auction is being planned since “the BCCI has plans to add a ninth team” for the 2021 edition. The move, it is understood, is aimed at striking a financial balance in the aftermath of the pandemic.

Should the BCCI — embroiled in an administrative muddle, with top office-bearers, whose term is over, sticking to their positions, hoping for the apex court to hear their plea — decide to float a tender, a corporate giant is likely to go all out to bag a new franchise based in Ahmedabad. The Gujarat Cricket Association has refurbished the stadium in Ahmedabad with a record capacity of 1,10,000.

IPL should have 100 teams...so that it can go on for 4 years........ A full on tamasha

They can add as many teams as they want the more the better but they have to find a way of keeping the same or similar number of games as now.

May be go conference style like the NBA and go for a South Central zone (Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai, one more team) and a North zone (Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan, Kolkata and Ahmedabad).

If and that is big if franchises agree then a promotion-relegation with 16 teams is better model. IPL prime in summer and IPL secondary in winter.

There are easily 16 cities in india than can sustain an IPL team.

Need 10 teams atleast. We still have so many quality players esp young Indian batters sitting out due to competition for places...A team from the east, maybe Ranchi perhaps.

Current format is fine. Sometimes adding too much to a good thing can ruin it.

Finally ,hoping to get it to 10 -12, India had many cities and also lot of foreign players to get selected..

IPL should be 10 team affair. They should also increase the foreign players quota to 5 to keep the quality of the team.

Ipl will ultimately be a 10 team affair.

Yes. I think India has a large enough market to support 10 teams. Which will likely make the tournament close to 4 months. At that amount of time it should be called IPL season than a tournament.

I think you are confusing the Test Championship with the IPL. That is the one that will drag on for years on end!

These leagues are best with 8 teams....max 9..... It should be completed within 2 months.....more than 2 months will ruin the attraction ........Money should noy be the only objective

Former India captain Rahul Dravid strongly believes that Indian Premier League (IPL) is "ready for expansion" in terms of number of teams without compromising on the quality as well as quantity of talent available in the country. There are talks that the 2021 IPL will be featuring nine teams instead of eight and will go up to 10 teams by 2023, which has always been the BCCI's long-term plan.

The views of Dravid, who is now the director of National Cricket Academy (NCA), were echoed by Rajasthan Royals co-owner Manoj Badale, who felt that a nine-team IPL in 2021 is "definitely possible".

"I feel IPL is ready for expansion in terms of talent, if you look from talent perspective. There are a lot of talented players who are not getting an opportunity to play."

Dravid said that if there are more teams, all the talented players could be fitted in and there won't be a drop in quality.

"So I believe we are ready as there are lot of new names and faces in terms of talent perspective," Dravid said during the virtual launch of Badale's book 'A New Innings', which he co-authored with former English cricketer Simon Hughes.

Badale, as a stakeholder in the IPL, welcomed the idea of expansion and also spoke about various aspects that needs to be factored in.

"BCCI needs to take a decision and they will take a call on what would be the exact approach.

"Making a nine-team league in 2021 is definitely possible but as a consequence, you will have to have more afternoon games and maintain quality of the competition," said Badale, a British citizen of Indian origin.

Dravid, on his part, explained why Mumbai Indians have been such a prolific team having won an unprecedented five IPL titles in 13 editions.

"They (MI) have a strong core with a high quality. Their core is built with world class T20 players and balanced it with young exciting talent. They have a very strong scouting structure in place," Dravid said.

He said it is because of IPL that someone like Rahul Tewatia from Haryana has been able to showcase his skills to a global audience.

"Earlier, you only depended on your state association to select you for Ranji Trophy. Now, from a state like Haryana which produces so many quality spinners like Yuzvendra Chahal, Amit Mishra and Jayant Yadav, Tewatia would have had limited opportunities.

"So it's no longer limited to state associations," said Dravid.

He spoke about the heady feeling of playing international cricket without actually playing one, which the IPL provides.

"As coaches, we can help the young players in their journeys but what helps them grow is experience. Look at a Devdutt Padikkal who is batting alongside Virat Kohli or can learn from AB de Villiers."

Another aspect in which the IPL has helped young players is the availability of worthwhile data to improve their game.

"Look at someone like T Natarajan. It was because of the the quality of data that he was able to go back and work on his yorker and that one skill has now got him into the Indian team," he said.

Hearing the Bcci Agm in December may push for 2 new teams.

A 10 team IPL.

My money is own Adani for Ahmedabad and Goenka for Pune.

Tatas are too conservative for a IPL team ownership. Kotak is the dark horse.

I don't think 10 teams should be there because we know what happened to Pune and Kerala teams before.

Sahara is a crook and his team(PW) contract was terminated but RPS(owned by Goenka) was a successful short-term team.

Wow. It would be amazing to see 10 teams battling it out.

More domestic players get chances. More international stars to see.

Complete auction with or without right to match card?

10th team should be Kashmir/Assam/Arunachal Pradesh

Uttar pradesh deserves a team.. Man.

Do you really want that much league cricket? I would never want PSL to get that big. I honestly get bored of league cricket after 1-2 weeks.

Kerala or for that matter south shouldn’t get anymore teams. RCB and CSK are enough.

Kerala is football crazy anyways, let’s take IPL where it deserves more. Ranchi should get a team.

That's awesome. More cricketers can make quick bucks.

Make sure they still priroitize tests and only pick players who excel in tests for IPL as well. They need learn how to crawl before they walk. Grind hard in doemstic and then enjoy your IPL cash momey Baby. Work hard Play hard.

iPL should be played 2 times a year so players can earn more income I reckon. Scrap the t20 Internationals and just have franchise cricket for players to earn some serious cash. Odi and tests ofcourse will remain the premier formats ofocurse. especially tests.

I don’t think that’s how it works. IPL owners don’t really care how newbies play test format, for them it’s all about winning IPL and making money. If promoting test cricket was on their agenda then I’m sure Pujara wouldn’t be left out IPL for past few years.

Then what is the point of auctions, you almost retaining half of the team.
At least 5 is required to retain team identity. Smart teams have invested in good players. They should have some chance to keep their services.

Why stop at 9 though? Have 12 teams and run this useless tournament for 6 months and give 6 months rest to all the players before next edition of IPL lol. :inti

BCCI is planning to start the Ranji trophy from January in bio-bubble.

League matches will be played in one city.

Actually, your suggestion is not that far fetched. Given the current landscape of cricket and direction majority of the fans are headed, it could very well happen in about 20 years.

Looks like the 9th team is going to happen right away. I would say the 10th might come in another 5-8 years. Similarly, 11 and 12 could happen in phases starting 10 years from the 10th team.

So you are not that far off!

We do have more than enough metro cities to support much more teams. 6 months may not be enough in future.

Cricket will be dead in 100 years if this tamasha is allowed to take over the entire schedule. Cricketers and cricket boards can't say no to the rupees on offer in a post covid world. The objective of competing in test cricket for your country will be laughed off by the next generation. They will be too busy practicing scoop shots in U12 cricket in the hope of some of that sweet, sweet Indian cash someday.

With rising Unemployment rate bringing an etra team into an IPL is a welcome move especially for the young unemployed Indian youth

The extra team has to be a city which is well developed metropolitan city as well as a city which can provide a sense of more security and safety especially when foreigners visit the place so I am a bit skeptic on opting for backward/Unsafe/less developed cities as that might also bring logistics or connectivity issues

All in all bringing an extra team in IPL is a good move

Why bother hosting it in India when majority fan probably will not be vaccinated in summer? Just book uae again.

It may be played behind closed doors.

Though players and everyone else involved are likely to be vaccinated.

Assam Cricket Association keen on having an IPL franchise from Guwahati and giving ACA Barsapara Stadium a home team. 9th team from Ahmedabad is also sealed while ACA trying their best have the 10th team from their state.
