Ajinkya Rahane : Mega Discussion Thread

Sorry...Lords knock was greater - seaming pitch, top quality bowlers breathing fire and the match was won on the basis of that knock - young team winning a test abroad after umpteen attempts.

Comparing that to this knock is close to blasphemy :)

The most complete Test batsman in my opinion. No matter what the conditions are, this guy is a champ.

Centuries in Australia, England, New Zealand and Sri Lanka and now India, as well as a 96 in SA. This guy has a bright future. Just needs to be a bit more consistent in between his centuries.

I posted his this bit of trivia in the match page as well, but will share for his fans here: He joins Sunil Gavaskar, Vijay Hazare, Rahul Dravid and Virat Kohli as the only Indians with centuries in both innings. Sheer class!

Probably in the top 4 batsmen in the world atm - Smith, KW, AB and Rahane (no particular order).

It may sound going over board, but he may end up among the top 5-7 Test batsmen from Asia.

He has played so many gun knocks in 20-25 tests and many don't play that many gun knocks in their entire career.

Like Laxman.. He had a knack for playing these kind of knocks!

Meh! :shehzad still has more potential

He is the next in line of great batsmen from Mumbai,Gavaskar,Tendulkar and now Rahane.

His slip fielding is what makes him more interesting as well hope he improves his LOI capabilities as well, probably might after Dhoni retires.

He is the product of bygone Indian batsmen era though the ones who talk only with the bat.

A common trait shared with other great Indian batsman of past. This shows he has very good anticipation, concentration and hand eye coordination.

The versatility of this guy is amazing.

Has scored tons in all the countries he has played now (Ind, SL, Eng, Aus, NZ, WI) except two (96 in SA, 98 in Bangladesh). If he can only improve his consistency a bit more to be considered by the majority cricketing public in the Root/Smith/Kohli/Williamson category.

He is already better than Kohli in Test format.

Kohli and Williamson are below him in test cricket.

I have already posted this a few months ago, I consider Rahane and Vijay better test batsmen than Kohli. Scoring runs in difficult conditions and situations is always more important imo (not that Kohli doesn't score in different places, but these two have a better rounded game imo for Test cricket).

But one thing that goes against Rahane is that he doesn't score big runs. He doesn't end up being the biggest impact in a series like what the quartet do. This is why his name gets lost when discussing the best batsmen in world cricket and doesn't get as much coverage in the media as a Joe Root or a Smith gets. He is one of the most complete batsmen going around in Test cricket atm and is one of the very few players (probably only one) who don't have a failed tour in their short careers, but if there is one thing I would like him to improve on, it is his consistency throughout an entire series and playing a starring role in a series.

Yeah.. Ajju has to bat with tailenders. Drop or demote Pujara, and play Ajju at 3. He will score a lot of runs.

India Vs England: Ajinkya Rahane Ruled Out Of Series, Mohammed Shami Doubtful For Mumbai Test

Manish Pandey was announced as a replacement player of Ajinkya Rahane, Shardul Thakur was also added to the squad as back-up player for injured Mohammad Shami.

India vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane was on Wednesday ruled out of the remaining two matches against England, with Manish Pandey being added to the Indian squad as his replacement.

"The BCCI medical team confirms that India batsman Ajinkya Rahane sustained an avulsion fracture on his right index finger and has been ruled out for the remaining two Test matches of the series against England. A ball stuck Rahane during the practice session today," The BCCI release said.

"Manish Pandey has been included in the team as a replacement for Rahane," the release added.

Mumbai fast bowler Shardul Thakur was also added to the squad as a back-up for injured Mohammad Shami, who is also nursing a sore knee and is a doubtful starter for the Wankhede Test scheduled to start from Thursday.
"Mumbai medium pacer Shardul Thakur has been called as back-up for India pacer Mohammed Shami, who is nursing a sore knee. The BCCI medical team is closely monitoring his progress and a decision on his participation will be taken before the start of the fourth Test match," the BCCI release said.

The Indian team is battling with injuries in the series with Wriddhiman Saha, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan already out due to injury and KL Rahul has just comeback after missing out on the first and the third Test match against England and also missed most of the series against New Zealand.

Manish Pandey made an impactful return after the finger injury when he scored 75 runs for home team Karnataka against Saurashtra in Group-B Ranji Trophy match and followed it up with another half-century.

Manish Pandey has scored 188 runs in the two matches of the Ranji season he has played so far. The 27-year-old is now an important member of the Team India's One Day International (ODI) side which possibly can be the reason for his inclusion in the Test squad.

Shardul Thakur has taken 13 wickets in six matches of the Ranji trophy matches he has played so far this season. In the last match against Bengal, he tore through their batting with a six-wicket haul in the first innings at Nagpur.
As far his records are concerned, he has played 45 first class matches and taken 155 wickets.
Since they will be part of the Indian squad now for the fourth Test vs England, their state teams are bound to suffer as they were already playing the match for their respective teams.

Damn.

Rahul injured
Vijay injured
Rahane injured and ruled out
Mohammad Shami injured
BK injured
Saha injured and ruled out
Dhawan injured and ruled out
Rohit Sharma injured and ruled out

Half of our team and bench is either injured or ruled out...England are very lucky!

Shardul Thakur looks like another trundler. The article as a highlight of hi recent success mentions that he had a good match against Bengal but he took only 6 wickets across 2 innings while super trundlers Kulkarni and Dinda took 8 and 9 respectively in the same game.

test matches are testing fitness of the so called very fit players..well done kohli for being fit so far...

Damn.

Rahul injured
Vijay injured
Rahane injured and ruled out
Mohammad Shami injured
BK injured
Saha injured and ruled out
Dhawan injured and ruled out
Rohit Sharma injured and ruled out

Half of our team and bench is either injured or ruled out...England are very lucky!

Some of these are blessings in disguise
Dhawan injured and ruled out
Rohit Sharma injured and ruled out

Thought Rahul and BK are fit and ready to play.

So Eng to win the next test? Except Shami, who else has contributed well in this series so far?

Cook will be happy to see Shami get injured. He looked like tailender against Shami most of the time.

The loss of proper backup option to Shami is worrying. I guess Ishant Sharma will play finally.

BK is a big loss. He will surely snap up a couple with the new ball.

Vijay seems to be lost. He never looked interested in playing. Dont know the reason.
Rahul never recovered from injury.
Rahane's injury is a blessing in disguise.

Shami's loss will be felt.

Yah, Cook will be happy to not see Shami, but long list makes it look like Eng got very lucky. Most of them didn't really do anything in this series. Shami is the only real loss for you right now.

A couple of them have been injured from the start (or after the first test), so we can't tell how they would have done.
