Alex Hales withdrawn from all England squads ahead of the international season

I wonder what the real story is of why he has been completely sidelined. We would kill to have someone like Alex Hales in our team.

England opener Alex Hales could be available for selection after three years as new ECB managing director Rob Key feels the batter has "done his time". Hales was withdrawn from England's ODI World Cup squad in 2019 after the Guardian reported that he was serving a three-week ban for recreational drug use.

The 33-year-old has played 11 Tests, 70 ODIs and 60 T20s. Hales last played for England in 2019.

"I will have to speak to the people involved in that decision but I would have Alex Hales available for selection. I think he has done his time. But does that mean he gets in the team? That is a different debate," Key was quoted as saying by the Guardian.

Hales, who plays T20 leagues around the world, pulled out of the ongoing IPL citing bubble fatigue.

Very interesting with the internal politics as Morgan is the one who has been shutting Alex out; if this has substance then it would signal the power in the white ball setup being transferred back upwards to Key/the director and away from the captain, coach. Impressive start for Key imo.

His views are pretty clear, I remember agreeing with him about a year ago; sky team went into a bit of depth on this:

From 36min onwards, Key sums up his feelings well. You pick your best players and the coach/captain should deal with the rest.

Am excited by his appointment, he is very proactive and forward.

Absolutely!

I would take Alex Hales over Haseeb Hameed in a red ball game any day of the week.

White ball it’s a no brainer, in red ball; not so much, as he has moved away from that format for a while now, last game for Notts was around 2017

A friend of mine was speaking about Hales to me and how he thought perhaps there is more to his exclusion than meets the eye. Is there more to it than what has been disclosed?

Impressive indeed regardless of how it plays out in the field.

Captain should have the power to select his XI and not the squad. There are selectors for that. The whole captain gets to decide who represents country or not shouldn't have been allowed in the first place.

I know a few things about Alex from some years back at Nottinghamshire because he is/was a friend of a friend. Albeit nothing that sounded particularly out of the ordinary for young male cricketers.

Still feel he is a big loss for England. There too order of Roy and Butler could be have also been something really special.

But let’s see his options might change a bit with Rob Key.

Will have to wait and see.

Theres always been a murmur about his extra curricular activites and what he does for enjoyment, but maybe needs a bit of help and guidance rather than getting completely sidelined, on his day a great player.

I think a past England captain with the “softer leadership skills” such as Michael Vaughan or Andrew Strauss would have nurtured Alex in the long term.

Eoin Morgan meanwhile has carved out a place for himself within English cricket that has made him a very powerful figure and he takes a hardline approach on any indiscipline.
