Lucknow: Aligarh will now be renamed as Harigarh and Mainpuri as Mayan Nagar after respective zila panchayats passed resolutions to 'restore' old names of these districts in Uttar Pradesh. Both the resolutions were adopted by majority in the first meeting of Zila Panchayat members in each of the districts.

The Zila Panchayats are being headed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-affiliated chairpersons who were elected amidst large scale incidents of violence last month.

The Aligarh Zila Panchayat is headed by Vijay Singh, wife of BJP Braj Prant Vice President Shyoraj Singh, who presided over the meeting where a resolution to change name of Aligarh to Harigarh was passed with majority votes. The ruling party leaders said the idea is to restore the original name of the district which was named after Swami Haridas.

In a similar exercise in Mainpuri, the newly elected Zila Panchayat chief Archana Bhadauriya presided over the first meeting of Mainpuri Zila panchayat members who unanimously passed resolution to change name of Mainpuri to Mayan Nagar in the name of Mayan Rishi.

Even though the members of Samajwadi Party opposed the move, the resolution was passed by 19 against 11 votes. Both the resolutions have been forwarded to the government for consideration before the state Assembly.

The timing of the resolution is also significant as it comes ahead of the Assembly elections scheduled in the state for next year.

The move marks yet instance of renaming Muslim names cities in Uttar Pradesh to Hindi lexicons. Before this, Allahbad was rechristened to Prayagraj, Faizabad to Ayodhya, Mughalsarai to Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Nagar in 2018 after the election of the Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government in the state in 2017.

They deserve it.

I had the opportunity to go to Aligarh with my father and met with the chancellor there. What I noticed was that they boosted about how Abdus Salam wasnt respected back in his country and he gave his medal to Aligarh university which is still there.

The muslims there had resentment for Pakistan.

The Hindutuva want to have their cake and eat it, if they had the balls they would pull down the Taj Mahal. Afterall, there is nothing more symbolic of Muslim rule than this monument.

WHy would they?

Don;t you know that the Taj was originally a Hindu temple? It was called Tejo Mahal and was built at around the same time that they built vedic aircraft.

:)) they would never dare to.

Taj Mahal brings Agra lots of money.

Infact, foreigners have to pay a larger amount for a ticket while local indians can pay a cheaper one. Talk about discrimination.........

Off course they wouldn't, money trumps all fascist ideology.

Taj mahal was constructed using Indian labour,Indian Money and on Indian land.

Apart from bigotry, changing names is one area where sanghis are world champions.

At least they should have changed the name to its original one. Why give it a new name? What difference does it make other than ego boosting of Hindu RSS types?

That area has a bloody history of conquests and the whole area stinks.

interesting, the interview you gave on PP said otherwise. you portrayed that its demolishing was wrong.

Well there was a court order staying the demolition, so violation of that order was wrong.

Just editing some names on the map of places where I'll never go. But my tax money unfortunately does - in copious quantities.

While its fine to change the names but its such a tedious task in changing documents with those cities in it, super annoying and as usual useless moves.

Kise ke baap ka nahi hai hindustan

But muslims wanted a seperate country in 1947 and hence Pakistan was formed. Correct or not?

Agar sabhi ka khoon hai (which I agree) why you guys wanted to split from India in 1st place?

Now that you did and got your own country, you guys (i.e Pakistanis) have no say in India's internal matter. You cant have the cake and eat it too.

A Pakistani has zero say in what happens in Zila Panchayat in UP...LOL.

You are not Indian muslim. Pakistanis have no right to speak in India's internal matter just like Indians have no say in Pakistan. Indian muslims have all the rights....they are thriving in every field. Dont worry about them much.

They deserve it.

If you are trying to imply that the name Aligarh change is due to Pakistan, then you are 100% wrong. Resenting Pakistan or not, Aligarh has a very rich history. The university was established by Pakistan's forefather, and the first person to propose two nation theory: Sir Syed Ahmed Khan.

Merely showcasing how they resent Pakistan and decision to change the name is very disrespectful to those who fought for freedom for both countries and the founding fathers of Pakistan.

Unfortunately, it is their country now and they are free to do whatever they wish. It's up to the local population of the land to manage these issues and if those muslims have an issue, I believe they'd be more than capable to deal with it.

I ll speak about any topic i like thankyou every much and i ll worry about what i like I have every right on this forum

When there is state sponsored aparthied and discrimination in a country then most people around the world would be worried

Is 'Hari' some Hindu God ? I've just realized, there is a city named Haripur near 'Islam'abad.

They had their say. Article says there was voting and a few votes were to retain Aligarh name. So everybody had representation and name is being changed in a democratic way.

Six Things That Will NOT Happen if Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh Is Renamed Harigarh

On Monday, 16 August, the zila panchayat of Aligarh passed a resolution seeking to rename Aligarh as Harigarh. "It had been a long-pending demand to rename Aligarh as Harigarh", said the zila panchayat chairman Vijay Singh.

While the final decision to rename the city will be taken by the Uttar Pradesh government, we wonder how things will change for the people of Ali/Hari-garh (or NOT change rather), after the big name change.

Will be a shame to lose the name Alighar, always thought it was a pretty cool sounding name which made India seem more cosmopolitan and culturally rich. At this rate every place is going to end up sounding like the next.
