Only by weakening the linguistic identity can one establish the religious identity of a group.

This analysis argues that BJP leaders defending Delhi police for calling Bengali a ‘Bangladeshi language’ is not ignorance but a deliberate political strategy. The goal is to weaken the shared linguistic pride between West Bengal and Bangladesh to elevate religious identity over linguistic identity. Why is splitting a shared language so crucial for this political narrative?

In July, multiple spokespersons of India’s ruling force, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), defended the Delhi police action of describing Bengali as ‘Bangladeshi language’, triggering an uproar.

The Bengali-speaking people are India’s second-largest ethno-linguist group, with over 10 crore population spread mostly over the eastern and northeastern states. A larger population, of about 16 crore, live in Bangladesh. Referring to Bengali as ‘Bangladeshi national language’ in Delhi police’s official documents was an insult to Indian Bengalis, politicians, activists and cultural personalities from West Bengal, Assam and Tripura alleged.

By defending the Delhi police action, the BJP leaders, including the party’s information & technology helmsman-cum-Bengal unit co-incharge Amit Malviya and the Bengal unit president Samik Bhattacharya, proved they really want to portray the Bengali used in Bangladesh as a different language.

This might appear to be ignorance; but, in all likelihood, is deliberate omission of the fact that the spoken Bengali differs widely even within India, but the written language is the same across the border. There is a ‘standard Bengali’ followed everywhere.

Not sure what the whole article is about. BD was part of East Pakistan for a reason. The people there did not want anything to do with Hindu India. Hence they separated. What happened after East Pakistan was formed with respect to differences with West Pakistan has nothing to do with BJP or Hindutva.

BD are a separate nation now and their people should not be in India without proper visas.

BJP has 0 chance of using a lower cultural and lower linguistic language to create a rift on language basis as most Bengalis are snooty and look down upon the crassness embodied in Hindi...it will backfire spectacularly...BJP attempt to communalize the election might work but in my opinion their best chance to beat Mamata is to stop insulting Bengali culture and heritage...each and every Bengali considers theirs superior to Hindi embodied in cow belt and Bimaru state.

Focus instead of hosting a true BJP Bengali leader and not TMC thugs and turncoats

Focus on development and providing an employment and industrialization vision.

Focus on Muslim illegal immigration but avoid communalizing the election as they tried last few elections.
