A poster wrote the quote in the title in another thread.

We hear phrases such as ...

'Leader of the free world'

'Leader of the civilsied world'

'The greatest country on earth'

Yes it's the biggest superpower the world has ever seen and the biggest economy. It also has lead the way in innovation esp space exploration.

Movies and TV are of a high standard.

It has done a lot of good things for the world but also a lot of bad.

State terrorism and interference in other lands and in every continent.

American sports are atrocious.

American food is pretty average.

It has the biggest population of prisoners in the world.

Built by slavery and ethnic cleansing of natives.

Has elected the likes of Bush and Trump as it's leaders.

I personally believe the world will be a better place if the United States of America didn't exit.

What is your view? :shezzy

That's pretty high and mighty of any human being to summarily pass judgment on whether a nation must exist or not. I don't think anybody in the world has the right to make that judgment.

We can debate other aspects of a nation's achievements and misdeeds, sure, but who are you and I to say "you should not exist!"

Happy Canada day everyone... It's a good day for Canada and therefore the world.

Just the fact you damn Canadians gave us Justin Bieber trumps all that good stuff. So there!

Speaking of Trump, yeah I hang my head in shame as well! 😀

I didn't say it shouldn't exist but was a philosophical statement suggesting if it didn't exist the world would be a better place.

Lol :))

Get out of your igloo and face the reality.

Canadia is just the 51st state of the U.S.

:))

You really believe the cons outweighs the pros?

Seriously?

Well what can I say, brother. To each his own!

America has contributed a lot of positive stuff to this world, yeah I agree it's been responsible for some major wars and conflicts as well but sometimes you have to view the evils of its government and the positives of its intellect and entrepreneurial spirits separately.

It is the ruling powers, governments and certainly not the people of America who are some of the great minds and kindest people on the planet.

This nation and its rulers have led the world on the path to a dangerous situation. The middle east is in ruins, its supports apartheid in Israel and is on a collision course with Russia and China.

America has the ability to lead the world into peace and prosperity but has only taken the world into conflict and destruction.

A nation which spreads such pain and misery cannot be called the leader of the free world or any other hyped up nonsensical statement.

They don't call it Soviet Canuckistan for no reason :afridi

Personally, i would vote England or Japan as the greatest country.

However, USA has made a lot of positive contributions to the world even if you consider their history of human rights violations. 1/3rd of the nobel laureates happen to be Americans and more than half of the top universities in the world are American.

In contrast, i can't think of many recent lasting positive contribution to humankind made by the muslim world or the Indian subcontinent in recent times.

We owe a lot to the west for the kind of lives we lead. At least i do.

Certainly the contribution towards entertainment and the arts is second to none. Also fields of science, space research and higher education "trump" the competition comfortably, if you'll pardon the Donaldpun.

And as a natural phenomenon, North America is amazing. An achingly beautiful continent. One must remember that these lands existed a long time before 1770, and have fascinating stories to tell about their peoples - although some whitewashed textbooks may try and ignore this!!

However the net score plummets when you consider the disgraceful foreign policy and the shameful thirst for a greater hegemony. Many people will die just today, to go along with millions in the past and millions in the future, because of the global influence of the US; many of these deaths will be indirect rather than direct; but just as tragic, just as bloody, and just as unnecessary.

The world's most powerful and awesomely fearsome country by far. But the world's greatest country?? No way.

David beats Goliath every time.

Rule Britannia!!!

England, Japan, Canada, Germany...Gosh, even Syria would rank ahead of the USA since at least their people have some decency if not money.

@OP those glorious expressions about America are normally spouted by Americans. Not sure anyone else agrees.

The fact the US has a population nearing 330-340 million and still has an HDI of over 0.90 in itself is an amazing achievement.

Every country has its faults, the US being a superpower of the world those faults are magnified more versus other countries.

No country in the world has the capabilities that the US has, not just on the military front but innovation and how it changes the world day to day. The smart phone we use, gps, google, apple, amazon, etc. the list is endless. All these came into existance because of the structure of the country.

Another fact is, the US is relatively a young country versus other countries of the world. To be only 240 odd years old and achieve as much as it has is a marvelous achievement. Other countries remember had head starts and still pale compared to the US.

One major thing we as a country need to improve upon is the healthcare sector and with time this will come.

Oh yeah, of course, let us totally ignore centuries of British tyranny and oppression, their invasion and colonization of over half the world and the fact they plundered and looted those colonies of their resources for centuries.. the British... the greatest nation on Earth, my behind.

The Brits are the grand daddies of Americans when it comes to playing the role of the evil super power.

without America there would be no internet or personal computers, hence this discussion online would not take place.

No internet, no personal computers, no planes, no smart phones, no light bulbs, no traffic lights, no integrated circuits, no microwave, credit cards or cds... just a few major ones

Think it's a pretty common theme on message boards that US is portrayed as the villain no matter what, not just the government, but every aspect of it.

Here on PP Canada and Britain are seen as the protagonists even though the latter has done its fair share on the world.

Nope, they would have all happened. Probably just a bit later...

while reading about history of Madagascar i came to know even arabs traded slaves ad sold them to indian immigrants who did good business with it

and not to mention it was british colonists who introduced black slave labourers and indian slave labourers in the american continent in the first place

My closing remarks were added partly in jest. Rest of the post was serious though.

While America has its flaws (which country doesn't?), it has a lot of benefits and is among the best countries in the world.

Some other superpower would throw its weight around instead.

Without the US, the Soviet Union would have absorbed Europe by now and we would have no freedom of speech to use this Internet forum.

I find Americans to be generous and kind, but in most cases not well educated on the land beyond their borders. They have a binary view of things - self/not-self, good/evil, rather than a pluralist understanding like we Europeans. That is why they incarcerate so many of their citizens. I think it stems from their fundamentalist religious beginnings.

It also means they need to have an enemy to fight. They must define themselves in opposition to something. Be that the British, the Mexicans, the American Natives, each other in their civil war, then the Axis, the communists and now jidadis. They have to fight some external not-self assumed threat, because they will turn on themselves again otherwise. This is bad for the world.

It's something of a shame that the political mood has turned so sour in the US against Muslims, I was planning on going over for a vacation for the last couple of years because there are so many areas of natural beauty I would love to see, although it would probably need a couple of months to do it justice.

I have to admit I love the US culture which has led the way with entertainment, civil rights and the biggest one of all, multiculturalism. Britain has given the world a lot, but it's become a better place in my opinion through the influence and driving culture of the US.

I might still find some way to go over, just right now can't stomach the idea of lengthy checks and procedures at airports and such. Fake country to some degree, but fabulous nonetheless.

Let's take this 4th of July to celebrate America's greatest achievement: BEING CANADA'S NEIGHBOUR.

:salute :salute :salute

US is the best country to live in.
Super power.
Enormous job opportunities.
Democracy
Can do anything without the fear of being killed
All kinds of weather (Hot/cold/warm)
Best women to date without being killed (if you are single)
Freedom to practice whatever God you believe in.
Best entertainment.

US is like a mini sample of the world.

:salute :salute :salute

OVer 80% of Canada's jobs are tied to America, y'all would be a nothing if you weren't America's neighbor.

You guys think Canada's so great, try buying a 4000 sq ft detached house in a nice suburb of a major city there. It's almost impossible for Middle Class Canadians to afford the lifestyle Middle Class Americans can.

America is nothing without:

Boxing
WWE
Hollywood movies
Evangeline Lilly
Angelina Jolie

Everything else is a load of crap.

Probably not the best (Germany? Sweden?) but up there, especially compared to the likes of India, China, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia or most countries outside the core group of 38-39 developed states.

Probably not the best (Germany? Sweden?) but up there, especially compared to the likes of India, China, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia or most countries outside the core group of 38-39 developed states.

Germany and Sweden haven't contributed anything to the world culturally, everybody watches and listens to American moves and music and the only reason why European countries have such a high quality of living is cause of the Marshall Plan.

America is a living contradiction which makes it such a fascinating country to study.

This is not an America bashing post. But for a country that boasts about its values of freedom and liberty, it is so quick to deny it to others such as African Americans, Native Americans and the inhabitants of countries whose dictatorships are subsidised by US taxpayers. Not to mention its own citizens given the US has the largest incarceration rate in the world.

How can a country that professes its love for its Constitution is so willing to ignore routine violations of it by multiple Presidents both Democratic and Republican ?

Its Founding Fathers knew the dangers of corporate tyranny, having rebelled against the British Parliament which was dominated by stockholders in the biggest transnational corporation of that time in the East India Company, and warned that excess inequality in economic property would subvert liberty. Yet the influence of lobbyists and the stench of corruption in Washington is overpowering.

How does a country with world-class Higher Education, possessing some of the brightest minds in the world, have such mediocre rankings for literacy and numeracy compared to other First World countries ?

How can a country possessing some of the best physicians in the world, that spends far more on healthcare than many other developed nations, lag behind so many countries in the world in terms of efficiency and health outcomes ?

It is a First World nation with a Third World mentality on guns, religion and race. It can be a force for good in the world, a hub for great innovation and ideas, yet capable of appalling evil.

That's the price you pay to live in a great country. :yk

America's a great country

We have bald eagles. The king of all birds.

It known as the leader of the free world for a reason. Endless freedom here.

We sent a guy to the moon. In fact, all of the people who have been to the moon were American.

We got great muscle cars.

Home of Rock n' Roll

Home of hamburgers

Home of Marvel comics

Best colleges/universities in the world

Destroyed GBR in the American Revolutionary War

The best military

A beautiful flag

The best city in the world- New York City

Land of equality

Best BBQs

We have Hollywood

The light bulb was invented here

Awesome landscape. Tropical climates down Southeast with beautiful beaches and year-round warm weather.

Southwest is home to the majestic Grand Canyon and there are deserts throughout the West.

Magnificent mountain ranges all over the country.

Majestic snow-covered lands in the North and Mid-West during the winter.

The four seasons are also each very unique in many areas.

Hawaii is a good island

Beautiful national parks

Coca-Cola was invented here

Many sports to follow

Very diverse country with a plethora of cultures

The most powerful country

And I could go on and on and on.

America's the best country

Err maybe not that much

It is the best country no doubt

Ofcourse there's an argument that some of the Scandinavian countries are up there but the point is that they are small countries which are largely irrelevant n the world and just asterisks in history. 500 years down the line there won't be much discussion on them. And even now Pakistan has more relevance in the global political scene than these countries.

Americas place in history is secured and it has been the leader of the world for almost a century now till its first saved Europe in WW I.

Lol at Canada being in the discussion :)))

America is a country of extreme freedoms.

It may not be the best but it has made a lot of positive contributions.

We can't just nit and pick what we don't like about them which is always easy to do.

All western countries are good to live in. The downside is the refugee crises where they bring the back home culture with them. This ghettoises wherever they go.

Happy July 4th Independence to all my fellow American PPers!

So it's ok for the US to terrorise most of the planet because if they didn't somebody else would?

Do you even realise the extent of damage it has caused throughout South America, Asia, Middle East?

The Soviet Union ended nearly 20 years ago now and even if it was around now it wouldn't take over Europe because Europe has nuclear weapons and a good army, air force.

I will allow you to respond before going into detail referecing all the crimes and deaths as a result of US foriegn policy and then you can respond to each of them with further excuses.

People in non coastal regions of America often equate a large home with a higher standard of living. They don't understand that people can have a good life without living in McMansions

Nearly every good student I know wants to go to US for Post Graduate Studies. No other country can replicate such craze among the young students.

America is the most powerful country.
Regarding best it's not even in top 10.

Thanks. Just for the record though, I'm not a US citizen.

Peoples glamorize the US for the same reasons they would have preferred Pharaoh over Moses or the Romans over Jesus, because the former built fancy pyramids and used to write poetry while the latter were mere illiterate pastors - in other times we would have called this "eugenics", something Hitler's Germany was favouring, and you should favour too : after all Germany was at the apex of world civilization then, bursting with scientists and philosophers, so they had all rights to extend their lebensraum into Slavic sub-human territories, to build universities and contribute to the world.

Every civilization last few centuries at the top, but with America there are two particular features :

1) It's not a civilization to begin with. The Indians, Chinese, British, etc all had their own imprints in different fields, Indian philosophy, Indian literature, Indian music, etc while the Americans basically continue pauperised forms of what classical Europe produced in arts, including in literature or cinema, but more generally, where's "American philosophy", "American painting", ... you know, stuff which actually matters more than James Dean and we're supposed to talk centuries later ? Which is the American individuality who would be mentioned like Aristotle, Leonardo de Vinci or Shakespeare in the year 2500 ?

2) it's all probably that America's "Golden Age" will not last centuries, perhaps not even a full century considering China's and India's "comebacks" ; you have to keep in mind the US only began the major industrial power in the very late 19th century, while it became the scientific and cultural force only after WWII, when the US absorbed German scientists (cynically both Jews and Nazis, see "operation Paperclip) after it encouraged the WWII itself - so America's "Golden Age" is yet to reach a century.

For those who said that the US invented computers, the moon and whatnot, you have to keep in mind that the theoretical foundations of science were already laid down in NW Europe, and Americans just built upon what the British, Germans - with some Asiatic cameos from Russia and Japan - did, generally with the help of newly arrived European scientists ; if really you have to give the licence to ethnic groups to freely drop napalm on Vietnamese children because of their role in modern civilization, that'd be either the English, the Scotsmen, the Germans and esp. the Ashkenazi Jews, certainly not the Americans.

It displays a face behind a mask for being a great achiever in so many fields. One thing everyone can agree on is the US is the biggest military force the planet has ever seen. What are your views on why it chose to be such a big military force, inc having over 1000 bases worldwide? What is it's aim, world dominance or merely security for it's own people?

The UK is the greatest by far. A few years down the line, America will only be remembered for Hollywood. China, Japan and India will take that tag.

Lol Hilarious. America has given you all technological inventions in the last 50 years. Think Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Apple, Boeing, Tesla, etc....these inventions have changed the world..UK has given nothing that compares to any of these.

USA is not the best country for everyone. No country will be the best for everyone. It will pretty much depends on your priorities and countries who come closest in meeting them.

There are amazing, wonderful aspects to the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland.

I admire all of them - and I'm a proud citizen of three of them!

The tolerance of Canada, the literature and TV of the UK and the lifestyle of the wealthy in Southern California.

But above all, the people are overwhelmingly wonderful human beings.

I'm British and I tend to tease Americans and make fun of the likes of Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber.

But when that evil Islamist piece of human garbage attacked the Ariana Grande concert in my hometown of Manchester, I was in awe of the bravery not just of Ariana Grande but also Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber and everyone else in coming over a fortnight later for charity.

We Brits, Aussies, Kiwis and Canadians have incredibly deep links, and we are proud of them.

I hope when the UK leaves the EU - the Club for the perpetrators of Auschwitz and Bosnia - that we end up in an expanded North Atlantic Free Trade Association. My parents only signed up for an EEC, not an EU.

Because we belong with the Canadians and the people of Boston, not the Croats and the people of Bulgaria.

America is the only nation in the world which has been built with the total genocide of its natives, you only find such instances in the Bible, but those could be mythological as per archaeological research (despite the fact that they did inspire the initial European settlers in carrying on the killings of Natives) : as the singer Jim Morrison casually remarked, that's the reason violence is not only omnipresent in the US, but even applauded, with the "cow-boy" archetype (is the cow-boy some-kind of chivalrous figure with lofty ideals, like King Rama, 'Ali, ... ? No, he's a brute killing Natives).

Added to this violence, the US, since the death of the British Empire, has also acquired its geopolitical chess-games : the late Brezinsky talks like old British theoreticians like Mackinder and so on when it comes to control Central Asia as "heart of Asia, thus the world", and in order to block Russia and China (that's the reason they're in Afghanistan, nothing to do with "Talibans".)

If you addition this cow-boy mentality with expansive and imperialistic geopolitics, it gives the US of today.

Science and technology don't justify killing millions of civilian all over the world in a span of few decades, and with the most inhuman means available (I think peoples have yet to realize what "napalm" really stands for, apart from few letters) : the Egyptians were "the most civilized nation", the Romans were "the most civilized nation", etc against the Jew... where are the ancient Egyptians ? The ancient Romans ? There are still Jews around.

i dont think its the greatest place in the world. It is a very diverse country and it does have a lot of inequality and yes it has committed a lot of crimes. But would the world really be better without the U.S i dont think so. You would have another superpower in its place who would do the same things.

That does not justify the fact that world wrestling entertainment have Jinder Mahal as their premier champion, it sickens me; absolutely disgusting.

yeah, but why haven't the British come up with anything similar/better?...in the last 30 odd years they have contributed 0 to any technological advancements and are no longer the super power they once were. What remains is the legacy of the people who started it all but that's all they have left.

China is not ready to replace the US and Russia is far behind...America has reigned over the world for a reason and will continue to do so until someone steps up. Right now, there's no sign of any other country being better/more advanced than the US or even being on the same level...definitely not UK by any stretch.
