Few points i would like to make.

1) To credit India for preserving them is naive. Indian goverment grants them their wish of staying isolated only because they and their land is of no great use.

A business thinker you are not. A tropical island the size of Manhattan is tourism gold.

2) Whats the point of preserving the "culture" of these tribes? I could understand if we were able to study them as it would give us an idea of how life was in stone age but we aren't even allowed to go near them so whats the point?

This is the sort of arrogant uncivilized thinking that dominates much of the world, and which the Indian government to its credit is free from. The point of preserving the culture of these tribes is not what we can receive from them, it is that it is their lives which would be destroyed if the Indian government didn't take these steps.

3) why respect their wishes to be left alone and not respect wishes of some of the other cultures of the world like middle east where everybody wants to impose modern democracy and other foreign ideas? Hypocricy at its finest. Its obviously because of greed and ulterior motives.

I don't even know where to begin! Firstly, those wishing to protect these tribes (the Indian government) are not asking for democracy in the ME). Secondly, the European and US governments which want ME's wealth are not related to this topic. Indian government was responsible for exodus of Kashmiri pandits. They convinced Pandit leaders in the name of saving Dharam. This is the position that Kashmiris have held always. The 209 pandits who were killed were not (by and large) killed because of communal reasons but for playing roles against the tehreek. Many muslims were killed as well. Kashmiri pandits were a minority anyway not numbering more than 5 lakh so i am not sure how "land belonged to them cannot be allowed to secede". They are our brothers anyway, they will live here as they please. We dont need an Indian outsider to tell us that.

He was a missionary, check out his journal that was posted online. He wanted to build the kingdom of Jesus on the Island or something. During his first encounter his bible took an arrow and saved him, and he went back and died during his 2nd or 3rd attempt at conversion.

Indian officers had a nervous long-distance face-off with the tribe who killed an American missionary, in their latest bid to locate his body on a remote island, police said Sunday.

The police team, who took a boat just off Indian-owned North Sentinel island on Saturday, spotted men from the Sentinelese tribe on the beach where John Allen Chau was last seen, the region´s police chief Dependra Pathak told AFP.

Using binoculars, officers — in a police boat about 400 metres from the shore — saw the men armed with bows and arrows, the weapons reportedly used by the isolated tribe to kill Chau.

"They stared at us and we were looking at them," said Pathak. The boat withdrew to avoid any chance of a confrontation.

Police are taking painstaking efforts to avoid any disruption to the Sentinelese — a pre-neolithic tribe whose island is off-limits to outsiders — as they seek Chau´s body.

The death of the 27-year-old on November 17 has cast a new spotlight on efforts to protect one of the world´s last "uncontacted" tribes whose language and customs remain a mystery to outsiders.

Fishermen who took Chau to North Sentinel — which is one of the Andaman and Nicobar islands in the Bay of Bengal — said they saw the tribe burying the body on the beach.

The Sentinelese normally attack anyone who goes to the island and Pathak said police are monitoring to see if there is a repeat of an incident after two fishermen who strayed onto the island were killed in 2006.

One week after their deaths, the bodies of the two Indians were hooked on bamboo stakes facing out to sea.

"It was a kind of scarecrow," Pathak said.

"We are studying the 2006 case. We are asking anthropologists what they do when they kill an outsider," the police chief added. "We are trying to understand the group psychology."

Though Chau´s death is officially a murder case, anthropologists say it may be impossible to retrieve the American´s body and that no charges will be made against the protected tribe.

Seven people, including six fishermen who were involved in ferrying Chau to North Sentinel, have been arrested.

The fishermen have accompanied the police teams to the island to help efforts to pinpoint where Chau was killed.

Anthropologists and tribal welfare experts who have had the previous rare contacts with the Sentinelese have been heavily involved with the inquiry.

"Their advice will be important," said Pathak. "We are taking the advice of the people in the field to advance this case."
