Amir Was Set To Retire Two Years Ago, MD PCB

LAHORE, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - APP - 29th Jul, 2019 ):Managing Director, Pakistan Cricket Board, Wasim Khan on Monday disclosed that pacer Muhammad Amir was set to retire from test cricket two year ago, but timely intervention of Pakistan Cricket team's coach, Mickey Arthur persuaded him to change his mind.
"Amir decided to quit test cricket two years ago and discussed it with Mickey Arthur who had few sessions with him on this issue and eventually made him understand that it is not the right decision at this stage and Amir finally changed his mind," said the PCB official here.

He said Amir has now announced his retirement from longest version of cricket and PCB respects his decision.

"We are disappointed with his decision but we have to respect his decision as we can not force him or any player to change his mind at a time when he is mentally ready not to continue," he said.

Wasim said a player is the best judge to decide when to retire and how to preserve his energy to continue in a specific version of the game knowing his body strength and most importantly his mental toughness.

"Amir knows about his body strength and future prospects in the game and I think this time he has made his mind after a thorough thought to serve one day and T20 games with a renewed zeal and determination," said the PCB official.

Everyone respects his decision but ultimately its about how much he cares about respective formats. At 27 a bowler like Amir who has not had many issues with injuries since his return and is relied on to such an extent, is expected to play tests. But it seems the commitment is not there from his side, which would make him playing tests pointless, and there's simply no use of that. At the end, its just a disappointing predicament for Pakistani fans. Not just because of all the backstory associated with Amir and how he is this "lost genius" but also because he was starting to do well in tests which an average of 21 with the ball since the start of 2018 clearly shows.

Seems that this has been cooking for a while - but at the at end of the day its his choice

People are wrongly accusing Amir. He was never that good bowler in test. Plus there is no pace in his bowling.

When someone retires respectfully, we are not happy when someone is not going away, and we are not satisfied.

When exactly are Pakistani cricket fans happy?

The same people who called for him to be dropped and ridiculed his selection at the world cup are now complaining he has decided to retire from tests. PAK fans are never happy..

I don't get why Pakistani fans are angry about the decision, it was pointless having him play that much cricket in the dead wickets of UAE. UAE is a graveyard for pace bowlers and he will not be missed in this format outside 1-2 countries, Pakistan have better bowlers than him in this format who can perform better at home and offer up similar performances outside the UAE.

This will allow him to play longer in the shorter formats and will give him the best chance of being at his most potent best for the 2023 WC.

I'm not angry and I agree that Mohammad Amir's short stature and medium pace made him surplus to requirements in Asia.

But I'm disappointed that he didn't come to an arrangement with the PCB whereby he remained available for Tests in Australia, England, New Zealand and South Africa.

It's pretty rare to get a guy who can bowl left-arm fast-medium and bat at Number 9 as well as Amir does outside Asia.

Arthur did make this arrangement with Amir (check the retirement thread for link). Last couple of years this was more or less the agreement with Amir

Yes, I know. I'm surprised and disappointed that they didn't carry on the same way.

Arthur kept him for australia , new zealand and englands tours but sadly amir didnt help pakistan at all.

In my opinion amir should have at least tasted the joy of playing a test match in pakistan.

That explains his bad form, the motivation was never there. It probably helped in his fitness tho.

Think Amir sees his body declining. He knows where the money and longevity of his career will be. He also probably saw that Pakistan has some emerging young talent who can move the new ball. He is doing better in shorter formats where he can use his variations, bowling IQ etc to get wickets and dot balls.

He probably wants to play 5 more years and saw this as the only way. It is clear physically he is not the same guy he was 10 years ago. I can not believe how fast time goes. It's been 10 years already since Amir joined the team. Those 5 years away really killed his career from being as one of the all time greats. He had all time great potential and bowling talent. It shows you how talented and skilled a bowler he was in that he was able to stay away from 5 years and still come back to elite status on a body that was physically declining.

Imran Khan was a better bowler in UAE than Amir. Nobody would miss Amir. It's ridiculous how long people can play in Pakistan team based on reputation. Amir is not even a good ODI bowler. Decent in T20s and that's about it.

Right after the world cup your comments sounds not very sane.
