What's new

And some said Hashim Amla is not a batsman suited to ODIs....

You say nothing personal before congratulating people who are pakistani and fasting, I don't get why that has anything to do with his class on the pitch :irfan a brilliant hundred which deserves applause and nothing else :sachin

I don't see anything wrong in congratulating his fans. It is a goodwill gesture on my part.

Anyone who scores a century at less than run a ball on these pitches should be disappointed with their effort.

A minimum 100 s/r is needed and preferably in 120's.

Sounds like you've spent most of your days on this Earth on the Oval wicket, I appreciate your insight :yk

What about all the fans who are not fasting or pakistani ? :irfan

Well, they generally don't support him or SA. They are exceptions on both sides though. I am fasting and I am a Pakistani, but I enjoy SA losing.

oh right, we in England however of all races, creeds and religion are fans of Amla's cricket and are not limited in our appreciation due to his faith or why others choose to support him :yk3

Looks like the selfish inning is going to cost SA this match. :amla

Anyone who watches the whole matches know how tough it was to score in the opening overs even someone in the likes of de kock struggled to score freely that time

Hashim just played a great and valuable inngs

Fantastic hundred on a tough pitch today. His hundred was the difference between the sides today. Off to a great start in the CT, let's hope he can keep this up and end as one of the highest scorers of the competition.

These under 100 s/r innings will not work everyday. Especially when playing against top teams.

This was a very good inning by Amla no matter how high the bar is set for him. The only part lacking was the fact that the quality of bowling attack was pretty average.

This was not a 320 pitch. That hundred was the best batting performance seen today and without it, South Africa would have lost.

To be fair to Amla he's the fastest to reach 3000,4000,5000,6000 and 7000 runs in ODI's

So we can't say he's too slow

Yes he was superb for first 70 balls. The pitch was difficult compare to first 2 matches and thats why a fluent player like De Kock also played cautiously.

Amla slowed down a bit after 70 but one reason that can be given was the loss of Faf and AB at the other end.

Is Hashim Amla underrated in ODIs?

An opening batsmen with an average of 50 and a Strike Rate of 89 having debuted in 2008 and hit the purple patch sooner for the first 5 years.

Between 2008-2012, these were Amla numbers in ODIs: -

Matches:- 62
Runs:- 3216
Avg:- 59.55
SR:- 92.72

This was the time when South African pitches were still not as flat as they have been in last 3 years.

His career average + SR combo is very similar to a lower order batsmen MS Dhoni, who also averages 50 at SR of 87 as well but Dhoni's average is highly boosted by not outs and for a lower order, his SR is very poor.

Dhoni is widely considered an ATG while Amla is mentioned nowhere near. Is he underrated in ODI cricket?

Discuss!

He is a great ODI batsmen. Some posters unnecessarily have taken a dig over Amla over the years due to some of his failures but have failed to realize how great an ODI batsmen he was in the first five years of his career. The consistency he posessed is unmatchable by any current opening batsmen except Rohit.

That peak, although short, but is insane and that alone makes him a South African great. This impact thing is overrated. He has got 26 hundreds in 165 tests only.

A SA odi great who would have been an ATG if he had delivered more prominently under pressure situations.
