Apple Ipad vs normal laptops

My laptop is now dead. I was wondering whether to get a new laptop or an iPad pro. Money is not an issue. I intend to use it mostly for surfing the web, watching videos, and for other multimedia purposes.

Does anyone here use an iPad? What has been your experience like with it?

Get a MacBook if you can.

Apple products are far more robust and stable. They are very well built machines which last longer than their competitors.

I honestly never understood why iPad is so popular. It is just a cell phone with bigger screen and less features. If I have to do anything quick online, my iPhone XS Max is good enough for it (has a huge screen). For anything longer, I can login to my MacBook within a minute. I have never gotten any virus, never had a slower machine, my MacBook almost never overheats. I find it much easier to handle a MacBook over a tablet.

Switching to MacBook was the best decision I took 6 years ago.

Get a Surface Book 2. You can use it both as a tablet (by detaching the display) and a traditional laptop. It's far more reliable than any of the Apple products. I just recently made the switch from a MacBook Pro (2017) because of it's garbage butterfly keyboard; and the battery life wasn't amazing either.

Apple stopped making good laptops in 2015 after they reinvented the chassis.

I've never really used tablets such as iPads, Kindle, Surface etc. I've always thought to "cut out the middle man" and just use either a laptop or smart-phone, depending on the situation.

However I think have a tablet could be quite convenient for writing academic notes, watching sports on apps like Virgin Go or Sky Go and using entertainment apps such YouTube or Netflix. So I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations. As for a budget, I'd prefer it to be a maximum of £250-300. Not a huge investment by any means.

I initially wanted a MacBook, but later dropped the idea and instead thought of getting an iPad Pro. Mostly because tablets are more compact than laptops.

For how many years do MacBooks get OS updates?

MacBook is the past. Apple now has a dedicated OS for iPad and is no longer just a large iPhone.

It will replace laptops in a few years.

It depends which ecosystem you prefer, Apple or MS?

I prefer MS.

Laptops are not going anywhere in the conventional sense. Tablet + Keyboard = Laptop.

Physical keyboards are essential!

Yep the new OS for iPad is going to take it to the next level.

Ipad pro has come long way from being giant iphone to a capable tablet which can serve as decent laptop alternative for an average joe whose software needs are basic.

I would advise it is wise to first check whether ipad has any app alternatives for the softwares you use regularly .
Can you get the productive work done on it as efficiently as laptop when needed etc.

It's just a tablet so to make it work like laptop you need to buy Apple's super expensive smart keyboard cover which doesn't have trackpad but now iPad os supprts mouse pointer so there is a hope for availability of better third party keyboard accessories with trackpad in future.

Ipad pro going strength to strength as a laptop replacement device but unfortunately Apple is hampering it's capabilities by keeping tap on it'sOS software potential so that it doesn't challenge their own MacBook market & eat macbook sales.

Anyway if you are considering Windows laptops then there are some outstanding hardware available in market such as dell xps 13 range , Microsoft's surface laptop & surface book , hp's spectre range laptops , asus zenbooks etc so check them out as well if interested.

Apple is THE King. Nothing beats Apple.

Your investment is too low but my style is that I buy a quality thing and stick with it for years. My current apple tablet is 7 years old and works like a new.

I have to agree that an Apple tablet is worth it as it will outlast the others and you should get a 2018 model within your budget. Also their after sales service is the best IMO.

MacBook updates are way too fewer than the amount of updates you have to install in a MS system. If I remember correctly, I have updated my OS twice in 5 years. Apple updates are seamless and run much faster. Neither does MacBook ever hang nor restart due to OS issues.

I wouldn't be asking if people didn't. They have a lot of convenient uses such as note taking and watching entertainment and sport.

University students do for notetaking.

Not sure if tablet's the best place to do these tasks.

Anyway, Android hasn't really hit the tablet territory like iPad has. Samsung got few powerful ones, but Apple is leading in this regard. This is coming from someone who hates Apple's eco-system.

I agree with the others, iPAD is the best. While I don't personally use it, many family members of mine have it, and they have not had any issues.

iPad is great you wont be disappointed, if you go that route. However the question is how do you use your laptop.

For example i use it for videos, surfing web, etc, same as what you want it for. I personally like to place on my dining table, and sit on my couch and use it there. So for me its not practical to have an iPad, as the main benefit is being able to hold it in your hands. And Yea you could a stand , but you have a mini labtop then, so smaller screen. Plus the specs would be better on a laptop.

Tablet does have a market and use . It is more portable and easier to do necessary light stuff quickly.

I think it will always have a market.

When people will be reading this thread, they will feel iPad, Apple is next best thing since slice bread.

If you have absolutely zero knowledge about laptop, go for any product of apple. It will serve you better.

But you can extract much better performance at a much lower price if you know how to tune your laptop or mobile.

For noobs, it's Apple Macos or ios.

For experienced users, it will be Linux and Android.
