Where are all the Pakistani restaurants in new jersey

I live in manhattan. Today was in Jersey. Decided to go for desi food. Someone recommended Newark Avenue. But it was full of indian restaurants and mostly vege. Is there a similar area in jersey where there is a Pakistani community and bunch of places to eat? I know about Edison. But it’s too far from my friends home in weehawken. Also if there is no specific area. What about a moderately priced restaurant.

If you are in Weehawken, then Jersey City is close and has a bunch of Pakistani restaurants.

There is Nirala Restaurant in Elmwood Park and I think Teaneck has a Pakistani restaurant as well.

Otherwise, there are not too many Pakistani restaurants in North Jersey, but the Arab food is really good especially in Paterson and Hackensack areas.

Off topic question, how long is a drive from NYC to North Jersey and do subways go there?

The New Jersey subway which is different from ny subway system goes between north jersey manhattan. Pretty seamless. 10 minutes maybe. Driving took me 20 minutes from my home. Can be much longer due to traffic in tunnels. But due to long weekend and corona. It was a breeze

You can take the light rail from Penn Station to Secaucus. It’s about 10 minutes. The Secaucus Station is like the main hub station in North Jersey.

As far as the drive from NYC to North Jersey, it depends what part.

There is the George Washington Bridge, Lincoln/Holland Tunnels, and Goethals Bridge.

GWB is Fort Lee to Bronx/Washington Heights
Lincoln Tunnel is Hoboken to Midtown
Holland Tunnel is Jersey City to Downtown
Goethals Bridge is Elizabeth to Staten Island

Queens and Brooklyn are farther and generally anywhere from a 30-50 minute drive depending on traffic.

Bronx and Manhattan are closer and will be 15-35 minutes depending on where you are driving from.

Most Pakistani restaurants are located in Edison area. Food is not great. Shalimar, shezan, tabaq are all average.

Best buffet restaurant is shah nawaz by far. Its only available on weekends. Excellent buffet with great choices. Costs $20 but worth it.

Other than that, best restaurant for me is Chai Chenak in New Brunswick area. Everything is freshly made and dine in experience is excellent. Its located in Rutgers area. Good food by Uzma in North Brunswick is also very good.

North jersey, lasani has good food. Its more of a to go restaurant for me.

If you are close to North jersey, you can try lasani or shadman. Both are good.

Chai chenak i hear about all the time. is it that good?

Its very good. Although menu is limited, everything is made fresh including karahis. Definitely recommend their karahi. They also have several streetfood options, rolls, chats and bun kabab etc.

I do love the theme of the restaurant, truck art style. Right now, they also have really nice outdoor setup. Good dine in spot.

I have been in nyc for over 22 years i think. Just wanted to know what others thought of good restaurants in NY. I know haandi and those restaurants in curry hill area very well. Know all the high end restaurants. What about BK or queens. Indian or pakistani. Thali? The one that surprised me was Adda in long island city queens. The food is spectacular and reasonably priced.

If you are in the NYC Queens area then, here is a recommendation.
Go to Hillside Ave and 169 Street in Queens, and you will see "Shah's" gyro cart.

Get his mixed rice platter with white and a little hot sauce. Ask for extra rice.
You will probably remember this food.

Any restaurants like chai chenak in NY side? Bk, queens.

My favorite Pakistani restaurant in nyc area is BK jani. Its located on grand st in Brooklyn. The place has fast food item but the flavor is out of this world.

Classic Jani is the best burger i ever had.

Lol with 22 years you should be giving us advice

If you are into Afghan food then you can't beat Bakhter Kabab located at 68-16 Fresh Meadows Ln Flushing NY 11365. It's not far from 169 and Hillside.

Out of all Afghan foods that I ate all over the world, this place had the best.

Due to corona, it's only take out.
Order yourself a family jumbo (good for the 4 people) and you will love it. Put some green sauce on the rice and enjoy it with chicken kafta.

All these Pakistani/Asian food places look mediocre as compared to their counter parts in the UK.

Pakistani restaurants in the NYC/NJ area are very mediocre. Chicago has much better restaurants and quality food as well.

There are hardly any left actually.
It all has been taken over by Bengladeshis.

74 Street Jackson Height area was once a hub of Indian businesses Even that is now flooded by Bangladeshis.

Agreed 100 percent. If you go high end like junoon or indian accent. They are off the charts good. But everyday food is mediocre in NY.

Chicago sabri nihari is very good. Ghareeb Nawaz i dont know how its so cheap. However UK best desi food hands down.

Sabri Nihari is OK, really, nothing out of the ordinary.

We love Zaiqa restaurant on Devon a lot better in Chicago than many others, including Ghareeb Nawaz.
Khan BBQ is not bad either.

My two cents about Chicago restaurants:

1. For BBQ, Bundu Khan is the best. Khan BBQ is good too.
2. For Nihari, Sabri is probably the best.
3. Halwa Puri - Pak Sweets. Tahoora used to be good but their halwa puri is mediocre. Their chai is the best.
4. Ghareeb Nawaz is the most budget friendly restaurant across the US. I mean $4 or $5 biryani, that too in huge quantity. Its amazing how they run it.

Best Pakistani food I had in the US was in California near Santa Monica pier. Some of the best naan I’ve had.

Gained a nice 5lb-10 lb on that trip to Cali with the above + freshly baked cookies for free at the front desk at the hotel I was staying at... good times lol

Next time when you are at Devon, go to Hyderabad House. They have two buildings right across from each other. Go to the one on South side of Devon. It’s the old and original one.

And order this item, “Talha huva gosht” with naan. You will be amazed.

And when at Tuhura, try their fresh orange juice, it’s good stuff.

Are you guys sure about that? Some Britsh Pakistanis I've spoken to haven't even had nihari and other traditional Pakistani beef dishes, I suppose it's cause a lot of the population is from rural areas where lentils and chicken are the preferred source of protein.
