Apple is working on an electric car, according to people familiar with the matter, showing the consumer-electronics giant is open to stepping outside its lucrative focus on mobile devices.

Apple has put a few hundred employees to work on the secretive project, said one of the people, who asked not to be identified because the information is private.

Steve Zadesky, vice president of iPhone product design, is leading the effort, the person said. Apple often tests ideas that don’t get released, and the effort work may not lead to the company introducing an automobile, the person added.

The project is code-named Titan and the vehicle design resembles a minivan, the Wall Street Journal reported earlier Friday.
Some Apple executives have flown to Austria to meet with contract manufacturers of high-end cars, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter.
Apple already has technology that may lend itself to an electric car and expertise managing a vast supply chain. The company has long researched battery technology for use in its iPhones, iPads and Macs. The mapping system it debuted in 2012 can be used for navigation.
Last year, Apple also introduced CarPlay, a software system that integrates iTunes, mapping, messaging and other applications for use by automakers.
Apple has batted around the idea of developing a car for years. Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of marketing, said in 2012 court testimony that executives discussed building a car even before it released the iPhone in 2007.
Mickey Drexler, an Apple board member and head of J Crew Group Inc., also said in 2012 that Apple co-founder Steve Jobs had wanted to build a car.
A representative of Apple, based in Cupertino, California, declined to comment. The Financial Times has also reported that Apple is hiring auto experts to work at a new research lab.

They've poached a lot of people from Tesla lately. I got this from a Tesla recruiter. It may just be to integrate their products better in automobiles, but then again they really could be in it for an actual vehicle.

Tesla have said they will share patents with others so the basic commodity electric vehicle will become quite simple to engineer.

Apple strength is to take a commodity product and make it more user-friendly and aesthetically appealing and a fashion must have. I really think they could do well in this Industry and in turn spark more and faster innovation from incumbents such as Toyota, Nissan, Audi, BMW etc

Looks like the tectonic plates have shifted from Detroit to Silicon Valley.

They have hell lot of cash, so this could be true, they might experiment on this.

Apple is known for its innovation and creative designs, so I guess it would be a 'creative car'.

Apple making cars?

I guess they won't install Windows.

*I'll get my coat*

^^:))
topic. NO, Apple is NOT developing an electric car. But they're working on an OS for a car. The in-dash Gadget and stuff.

I don't think you compete with Tesla for staff and say 'we are going to give them a run for their money' just to do some in-dash gadget stuff.

If they make e-cars it will be difficult to face Tesla, Elon Musk is the greatest entrepreneur of his generation.

Plus tesla is now taking off and will be growing at a phenomenal rate with there model s and international expansion.

When will be able to buy an Apple car? Keep in mind that Apple’s “Titan” project may not result in a final product. Apple is known for building dozens of projects, but only releases the ones that have the most potential.

However, there are hundreds of employees assigned to the “Titan” automotive project so Apple must be serious about it. Apple CEO Tim Cook approved the car project around a year ago and placed Steve Zadesky in charge. Zadesky is a former engineer at Ford that led teams at Apple involved in the iPhone and iPod. Zadesky was given the authority to set up a 1,000 person team and pull in employees from other divisions. Last year, Apple hired the former president and chief executive of Mercedes-Benz R&D North America Johann Jungwirth and industrial designer Marc Newson, who created a concept car for Ford. The WSJ reported that several Apple executives also flew to Austria recently to meet with contract manufacturers working on high-end vehicles, including Magna International’s Magna Steyr unit.

Never heard of Magna Steyr so thought i'd look up some images...

Tesla is more of an electronic than Apple.

Tesla is more Silicon Valley than Detroit.

Although Tesla Model S has wheels, it is also a gadget.
So it makes total sense for them to compete for staff.

let's compare Tesla (Model S) VS Apple (iphone, iPad, Mac etc.)

while some Apple products have a single of these techs, Tesla contains multiples.

Steve Wozniak helped launch the microcomputer revolution and remains a widely followed tech guru, but the Apple co-founder — "Woz," as he is known to his fans — has reversed course when it comes to two technologies that could radically alter the world around us over the course of the next several decades.

Once a strong proponent of both artificial intelligence, or AI, and autonomous driving, Wozniak says he doesn’t think either will live up to expectations. Fully self-driving vehicles in particular likely won’t be ready for the real world “in my lifetime,” he said during a tech conference in Las Vegas this week.

“A couple of years ago I gave up” on believing in autonomous vehicles and many of the promises of AI, Wozniak said, discounting what he long had predicted: that computers would soon become not only smarter than humans but also able to read our emotions and interact as if they had become sentient beings.

An early convert to battery-electric vehicles, Wozniak told the crowd at the JDPower Auto Revolution conference he has a “love/hate relationship” with Tesla and its vehicles, several of which he has owned in recent years. He and his family make frequent, cross-country trips and that has become easier with the automaker’s long-range products and vast network of high-speed superchargers.

While Tesla is not the only manufacturer developing autonomous technology, it does have a tendency to over-promise and under-deliver, Wozniak said several times during his Las Vegas appearance. For one thing, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has frequently said it costs less to run a battery-car than a gasoline vehicle, and that was true when access to the charging network was free to Tesla owners. But new customers now have to pay, and the company has driven up costs to the point where it is about the same as a gasoline model, said Wozniak.

Wozniak also said he was “suckered in” by Tesla’s promise that it would offer a fully self-driving version of its Autopilot system. For four years, the company has repeatedly said such an update is coming, but has so far failed to deliver, Wozniak said.

While Wozniak still uses his Tesla for long-distance travel, for day-to-day driving he prefers his compact Chevrolet Bolt EV.

Even then, for day-to-day driving under more challenging conditions, Wozniak said he doesn’t see the auto and tech industries overcoming the obstacles to full autonomy “in my lifetime.”

“You’re going to need at least the dumbest human behind the wheel to take control when an unusual situation comes up,” Wozniak said.
