another thing that I feel is as to whether this team can be called as so much superior to the NZL team that played in the semi or not?? Because when the teams are compared on an one-one basis, I don't find much difference between the team strengths either

if we had Rohit,Kohli,Dhoni they had Taylor,Kane & Guptill
if we had Rahul, Pant,Kartik they had Neesham,Nichols,Latham
if we had pandya,Jadeja they had Granthomme,Santner

in bowling Boult,Henry,Ferguson combined seems much superior to Bumrah,Bhuvi & Chahal.
And the conditions & luck(toss) favoured them.

So that also needs to be taken into account to conclude as to whether we lost to an inferior team or not.

Kuldeep is in horrible form.

Averaged 72 in ipl and dropped.

Averaged 55 in WC on turners.

Let's not judge based on hindsight.

If Jaddu had to come in, it would have been in the place of Kuldeep.

Either Jaddu or Kuldeep.

we also lost to AUS(with out Smith & Warner) in IND . And we beat them in this tournament.That is why I firmly believe that mere 8-10 point difference in rankings is not all adequate to call a 'team A' convincingly superior over the other 'team b'.

more importantly Dhawan who was crucial in that NZL series was lost. So that itself weakend the team a lot.

Move aside SA, this India are the biggest chokers in cricket history

India have a terrible record in knockouts of ICC tournaments in the Kohli + Dhoni era.

Why do Kohli/Dhoni escape the criticism they deserve? Especially given their performances have been poor as well.

Any team can beat India in the knockouts.

Last 5 ICC tournaments; India were favourites in 4/5 of those matches going into it. Lost to 5 different teams - SL, Aus, WI, Pak and NZ.

2014 T20 WC finals - lost to SL, should have won if not for extremely selfish batting from Yuvi and Dhoni.
2015 WC semifinals - lost to Aus, another failure for Kohli and Rahane and Dhoni batted selfishly to leave no chance
2016 T20 WC semifinals - lost to WI, more ball wasting from Rahane; Ashwin and Jadeja flopping with the ball.
2017 CT finals - lost to Pak, Kohli and Rohit with twin failures at the top; Ashwin and Jadeja flopping with the ball.
2019 WC semifinals - lost to NZ, Kohli and Rohit with twin failures at the top. Dhoni with the selfish batting and hiding.

yeah thats one way to look at it

but to be tagged as a choker its something that has to happen often and constantly too.

For a while we have seen South Africa and even New Zealand as well as chokers, and Sri Lanka prior to world t20 2014 win were big chokers as well

Pakistan imo had a choke phase too i would say from world t20 2007 to world t20 2012 and any other icc events in between

Pakistan lost final vs India in 2007 when the game was in their hand that was a massive choke as well

2009 champions trophy semi final they lost vs Australia

2010 another massive choke in world t20 2010 pakistan losing to Australia

2011 world cup vs india semi final, in a game pakistan should have won considering the bowled pretty well, at it was a get-able target too

2012 world t20 was another heart breaker losing to sri lanka in semi finals as well which again we should have won the total was not big at all


you see every team goes through a choking phase its not the end of the world

also if a team chokes it doesnt make them a horrible team, in fact their a great team because their always so close, its just about handling the pressure and making better decisions.

In the end india is the new choker but again it does not mean their a horrible team, and it does not mean it will last for ever for all we know india might win the world t20 next year or the world cup 2023

South Africa were not favorites this time around and they didn't make the semi they also didn't make the semis in champions trophy as well choking tag is when your close to winning as mentioned like semi final or final.
