Are Pakistanis unknowingly eating donkey meat?

not sure where you heard about Rabbits. I grew up in Saudi and rabbits are served at a lot of places

They are served here in Pakistan as well but i think i read somewhere that they fall in makrooh category not haraam but makrooh (discouraged). Are there any other halal animals with panja like rabbits? (not talking about chicken and birds)

I maybe wrong but i think Shia muslims don't eat Rabbits and Eel fish.

In China there's even annual dog meat festivals. VICE did a documentary on this:

One day our future generations will hang their heads in shame thinking about times when humans resorted to breeding animals for food. Never quite felt ashamed of the wild past though, we were hunters once and didn't know farming. But ever since the revolution in farming and dairy, it seems rather absurd to breed animals for slaughter. Like someone once said, love is the gift that we got from our animalistic ancestors, cruelty is the gift humanity has given itself. :)

Donkey heads, offal found in Karachi rubbish heap

The Clifton Cantonment Board (CBC) staff found the heads and offal of three donkeys near the Driving License Office branch located in the city’s upscale neighbourhood, creating worries about the use of donkey meat at eateries.

According to CBC officials, the offal was thrown in its jurisdiction by unidentified suspects, but was cleared and disposed of properly. They added that the police were investigating the matter.

Meanwhile, in a video message, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf MPA Shahzad Qureshi appealed to the Sindh government and the police to investigate the incident. He voiced suspicions that the meat of donkeys was being sold in nearby areas, such as Neelam Colony.

“Our team will probe the matter,” said Sindh Food Authority operations director Taufeeq Ahmed, speaking to The Express Tribune. “This is the first complaint of the sort that we have received today,” he added.

Refuting the claims of residents about donkey meat being sold in eateries, Ahmed said that his department’s teams regularly visited restaurants across the city to check on them. “We have not found anything suspicious,” he claimed.

Saying his department was aware of the concerns raised by the discovery of the offal, he requested people to allow the food authority teams to find out more accurate information about the matter.

Must be some Chinese stuff.

Donkeys, frogs, dogs. I think an influx of chinese in last 5-6 years is the Main reason.

Well , the chinese are indirectly affecting this . Apparently donkey skin leather is used in high end fashion products and is highly sought after . Pakistan has been exporting donkey skin to china which pays pretty well , now they have have to do something with all the leftover meat and bones ....

Thn we should export the meat to China too...

I don't if the meats taste, texture can be differentiated from Beef, Mutton etc as I have never tried it (wasn't available in any of menus in the East Asian countries I've been to).

Having said that from an Islamic point of view Wild donkeys are Halal although domesticated donkeys are Haraam.

If they are eating it, they can't be that unwitting in this day and age.

It is not easy to tell. In the 1980s, there was a tikka shop outside Peshawar University. It was shut down because of selling donkey meat.

I know quite a few people who had it and they say that they couldn’t differentiate it from goat meat.

Were you one of them?

Dishonest business practice is a very low thing to do. Poverty shouldn't be the excuse.

I would rather stay hungry than making a living with dishonesty.

Fasten your sea-belts Lahori PPers are arriving soon to give it back!

We in the North are fortunate that we don't have to deal with donkey meat, smog, pollution, traffic jam, heat waves etc unlike Karachites and Lahoris. :shan

Seedhey log, Khalis khuraak, motorways :nawaz, rolling hills. Life is chill in Potohar region. :abbas

Speaking of which recently the Lahore famous Butt Karahi opened in Karachi and I had some. My Lahori friends alway rage about Butt Karahi as if it is the best thing on earth. Honestly I wasn't really impressed. Punjabi style cooking has a lot of emphasis on butter and it took away from the authentic karahi taste. Nobody does karahi like the Peshawaris.

I also had something called Baluch Highway Karahi. Maaaaaan that was amazing. Imagine supremely soft mutton/beef in a dry gravy of green chillies. Buhat good tha...

I wonder if Tawa Piece from Lahore also arrived in Karachi? It's probably the only Lahori thing otherwise all dishes that are currently available in Lahore are available outside Lahore too with better taste...

The best Haleem I have eaten was the Haleem in Lahore, not sure if it was the Haleem itself or the fact that it was available with piping hot makhani Naan and pyaaz/adrak tarka everyday for breakfast by 9.30 to 10 am.

I love haleem but Lahore Haleem never impressed me. The best Haleem i ever had was in Rawalpindi Saddar and another time it was from a urdu speaking neighbor family in Muharram (they moved from Karachi). Haleem is a must dish in Muharram for urdu speaking families i think it's their tradition. Pyaaz/adrak/dhanya/lemon and masala tarka is a must for Haleem otherwise plain haleem just look like daal!

Bhai kaunsi daal mein ghosht hota hai? :srt

And you might be right about urdu speaking tradition of haleem during Muharram, I have fond memories of it from my childhood, but in recent times I think the tradition has gone away or people have simply forgotten about it due to busy lifestyles.

One important distinction is how you eat haleem, do you have it will naan or spoon?

naa, the real Butt Karahi is only in Lahore. Unless you had Butt karhai from Lahore, you shouldnt bash the eatery.

There are multiple Butt Karhais in Rawalpindi and Islamabad which are fake. Well not really fake, but their taste is not the same as the original

I have had the oringal Butt Karhai in Lahore, and i was licken my fingers. One of the best Karahis i ever had.
There butter karhai was just great.

Peshawari Karhais are different. They focus on salt. You cant compare the two.

Daal Ghosht and Haleem for starters. :cummins

In fact the combination of daal and ghosht, especially with mutton with haddi/nali is one of my favourite foods to make and eat.

I dont eat mutton, but i do enjoy beef. Only god knows whether i have eaten donkey or not.

I was talking about the look only :P Without the necessary Pyaaz/adrak/dhanya/lemon touch on top plain haleem looks like daal. I prefer both with spoon and with ghar ki roti (never liked haleem with naan or tandoori roti)

Heavy use of tomatoes is the major part of all the Peshawari and Shinwari karaahis

Imagine going to a restaurant, picking up the menu and the first item you see is "Donkey Tikka Kebab" :))

if youre having haleem with naan youre doing it wrong
