South Africa's home season this year is famously overloaded, with seven Tests against India and Australia crammed into nine weeks due to the Indian insistence on arriving a month late for the tour that had been set down in the Future Tours programme.
It's obviously practically impossible to play both series and six meaningless ODI's in between.
The India tour was economically important due to the sale of Indian TV rights. It was important too in sporting terms for South Africa to overcome the Number 1 ranked Test team, even though the South African public was supremely disinterested and the Johannesburg Test was attended by only a paltry 34,000 people.
But it was obvious as soon as South Africa had secured the Test series against India that the players' attention leaped ahead to the Australia Test series which starts in just over 3 weeks, while the players are making no attempt to disguise that they couldn't care less about the ODI series against India.
It has reached the point where AB De Villiers, FAF du Plessis and Quinton De Kock are skipping the meaningless India ODIs with minor injuries in an increasingly brazen and blatant attempt to be fully rested and fit for the Test series against Australia.
