What's new

Are the South Africans saving themselves for the series against Australia?

You play to win every game. Players were injured during the game. Rabada is the best pacer in the side and he is playing. If anything, you will rest your pacers.

Now if you are carrying injury, you are not going to make it worse by still playing with injury. That's not the same as saving for the test series.

A question should be asked to Junaids if runs even matters against south africa.

First, when Indian batsmen were making runs against Sri Lankans, he started his world famous thread to undermine the performance of Indian batsmen and now this to undermine the winning streak of India in South Africa. His obsession with India doesn't know no bounds. An this obsession of his becomes even more evident when pakistani team were whitewashed black and blue by New Zelanders.

Is resting key players for a test series they have only a 50% chance of winning worth a thrashing in a 6 match ODI series ? That too for a TEAM and a Captain who has declared that preparing for 2019 is top priority ?

what an incredibly stupid Thread.

If SA team were seeing this Odi series as completely Meaningless. Then first and foremost they would've rested Bowlers like Rabada and Morkel.

This Thread makes no sense at all Unless OP has some prove that Deviliers and Faf faked their injury to prepare for Australia test series.

LMAO! What a frustration filled thread! Proud nations do not sacrifice a series that too with the #1 ranking on line to prepare for another in the future!
You talk of minor injuries; finger injuries are not easy to recover from quickly - you can't take any impact from the ball either to catch, field, or to fend off; playing with one will actually be a burden on your team.
Golf is not an impact sport where the ball will hit your hands!
I can understand not liking a particular team and wanting to discredit their good performance - good for you - but at least don't make a fool out of yourself! I expected better from an 'experienced' person.

Looks like S.A. is going down 3 - 0 as 8th wicket has fallen chasing 303. Well looks like 50% surety has been achieved in ensuring S.A. win the series with AUSTRALIA

India played superbly in ODIs and their achievement shouldn't be undermined, people feeling insecure about India's success should bear in mind that Pakistan was the first Asian team to win an ODI series in South Africa. Their performance was appreciated by everyone and same should be applied in India's case.

I don't think OP meant to say that SA is ok losing this series. Of course they want to win.

But it's possible that they want to win the Aussie tests even more and hence are giving key players a rest. This is not hard to imagine. They just beat India in tests, beating Australia would cap a perfect summer for them.

Who will remember this meaningless ODI series anyway?

Why would they?

Especially when all the money is here.. and also a once in a lifetime chance to impress IPL Team owners

Chalo, top batsmen aren't playing for SA. Then Bowlers ka kya? All top liners are playing for SA. Still india scoring runs with proper technique and hard work.

SA injuries shows how fit and agile indian players are!

Winning on fitness level against SA is a great achievement. Less we talk how fit Pak. players are better.

:aag

A lot of posts have been deleted here. Guys, stay on topic!

Not true. They had 6 match series because it is part of their world cup preparation. If couple of players are injured you cannot give an excuse "we don't take it seriouslY". Pretty sure SA doesn't give that excuse. winning and losing part of the game. But getting shellacked like this is not exactly their idea of "taking it easy" . It is almost like they struggle to reach Kohli's score

Good point about WC preparation. After winning tests, SA may have the mindset of building for 2019 by giving unknown players a chance. Maybe they'll lose 6-0, but if they discover a few new promising players, that is worth much more in terms of World Cup prep, than playing their 1st team and winning or being more competitive in this not as meaningful bilateral ODI series.

I imagine if they had lost the test series, they would play for pride and put forward more of an effort.

I actually agree with this. First, ABD intentionally blunted his finger during the 3rd Test so that he can rest for the first 3 ODIs.

Then Faf scored a century in the 1st ODI though India still beat them effortlessly. Faf must have thought during the innings break that only way he can get some rest now is to dive for a catch & make sure to break his finger. Mission accomplished.

Lastly, Quinton given how much impact he had during Tests & ODIs by scoring 71 & 54 runs respectively indeed earned the right to have some rest by intentionally bruising his wrist.

Yes, there is absolutely no sense in giving one of their mainstay ODI batsmen, a grievously out of form Quinton De Kock, a chance to play himself into form ahead of the WC 19. Or letting their most likely starting 11, including key batsmen Faf and ABDV, get acquainted with two mystery wristspinners who are likely to form the heart of the India attack in WC 19. Much better to injure those players, just like Steyn, surely, was also deliberately made to injure himself in the middle of the Test series, in order to give him time to be fit and raring for the Australia series. A cunning plan, so devious one might be forgiven for thinking it was the stuff of fiction and fantasy...

I am sure the entire South African ODI team will be looking for ways to get injured before game 4. :tahir2

Hope AB plays well in 4th ODI and gives some challenge to Ind wrist spinners.

They can hone their skills vs counter attacking batsman in middle overs.

Develliers returning. The ODI beast is back.

SA suddenly getting serious about this series . India cannot win ODI series now.
Can they?

Good move by ABD to come back and play a few games. South Africa doing the right thing here by rotating their line up and fine tuning players before the big series.

So ABD, Dekcok, Faf feel that by feigining injuries and skipping real life match practice they can prepare better for Australia Series by sitting in their living rooms.
Also the bench players of SA replacing them are probably purposely under performing and giving away wickets to wrist spinners so as to coax and trap Aus to play spinners against them.
Then they can trap Aussies with sudden good performance which they chose not display in India series. Thats a brilliant trap strategy.
In the meanwhile it is ok that they are about to loose a series to a team which has never won an ODI series in SA.
As for vision 2019...are they loosing on purpose so that SA players get mentally prepared to what it feels like in knockout games.
Probably that their vision that they will choke anyway so might as well prepare for it by getting a feel by loosing a series.

This is a very emotional evaluation of the situation. India is winning 3-0, which was much needed to salvage something from this tour after all the hype. Is that not enough?

Does everyone also need to be convinced that South Africa is bringing their A game, when reality shows otherwise? :trump

SA lost one game against India while that would have never happened if India were playing Australia in Australia.

In today’s third ODI, South Africa has only picked three members of its first choice Test eleven, while India has picked seven.

Good logic. India has genuinely rested most of its test side (notice none of these players are injured, they have been rested), especially their bowling line up - Murali Vijay, KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Mohammad Shami, Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Wridhiman Saha....that's like 70-80% of India's test side

While SA has been playing its main test players...only ABD was injured before the series and he too is returning in the next match....Faf got injured due to the hostile bowling by India....QdK was most probably dropped for failing over a month

Good that India is focusing on test cricket and allowing IPL performers like Chahal and Kuldeep to get a chance in ODIs

South Africa - 8 - QdK, Amla, Faf, Markram, Phehlukwayo, Rabada, Morkel, Tahir

Game 2
India - 4 - Kohli, Rahane, Pandya and Bumrah

South Africa - 6 - Amla, Markram, Phehlukwayo, Rabada, Morkel, Tahir

Across the 3 games, India’s first choice test players have played 12 times while South Africa's first choice test players have played 20 times, i.e., 67% more.

Look carefully, he said "first choice Test eleven", and that's some random team he came up with himself (not the one that South Africa played in the test series).

Morkel has only been keeping warm Steyn’s “white quota” Test place.

Missing from the first choice Test team:

Elgar
FAF
AB
De Kock
Philander
Steyn
Maharaj

Actually India missed Philander, Maharaja, De kock more in ODI lol ENtire team barely went past score of Kohli's 160 in the last ODI. This ODI series was not even close. They got brutalized by India .India also missed world no.10 ranked bowler Axar patel :)

What about India missing....
Pujara (mainstay in batting)
Murali Vijay (main opener)
KL Rahul
Saha/Parthiv Patel (top 2 wicket keepers)
Jadeja
Ashwin (both main test first choice spinners)
Shami (first choice test bowler)
Ishant
Umesh Yadav

Well. They played their best team yesterday and still lost. Hope they are fully prepared to meet Australia in tests. :)

Why would SA make themselves look bad against India of all countries where ratings are higher than anyone they will ever play? If anything this is a more important series than any other.

Shocked that India rested Pujara, Ashwin, Vijay, Jadeja, Shami and so many other first choice test players. Still waiting for your response to solve this mystery brother Junaids.

South Africa did not rest anyone, the players just got injured. Faf got injured after the first game and so Did Quinton after the second. SA obviously did not want to risk their injuries before the test series against Australia. In the first ODI, they were only missing AB, the second ODI they were missing AB and Faf and in the fifth ODI they were missing Faf and Quinton. So they did the best they could in terms of available players and they are still strong at home. They still continued playing Morkel, Rabada and Ngidi, who will for sure feature in the test series against Australia. Not sure why they did not think of resting their premier pace bowlers. If you look at it closely only Faf is being missed as Quinton struggled throughout the Test series and in the first 2 ODIs he played. I don't think his presence would have helped SA much as he seemed extremely low on confidence.

South Africa can't play spin. They bound to loose series against any Asian team who can field 2 decent spinners

^^Anyone willing to give him the benefit of the doubt? Yes he could be a troll, hate India, etc. But there's a possibility that he saw the South African line up, and came to a conclusion... let's be honest, the SA team is barely recognizable in this series.

Australia reserved all their strength and players for 2015 world cup rather than 2011 world cup because that's what matters! Also Pakistan played to their potential only in 1992 world cup, because that was the only stage where the other teams had the full quality and worth competing! (Same logic applies to the last CT) South Africa will wait for the right stage to perform in a world cup, it doesn't matter to them until then! Convenience personified!

Agreed on this. While nothing to take away from India, they were thoroughly professional and really good. However, it is the worst SA ODI XI i have seen in the last decade or so atleast.

A guy playing his 2nd ODI is the captain, one old horse Amla who was out of form, other old horse ABD struggling with fitness and form. Duminy has been struggling for form for more then year and rest of the batters are unknown commodities.

Bowling wise yes Rabada is top notch, Ngidi new to limited overs cricket, Phulekwhayo is not good enough with the ball.

Again India did what they had to do as they cant control who is in front of them however, its also pertinent to accept the fact the SA ODI Xi in this series is no way near to what we have seen over the years.

Same way, India won with so many passengers in the playing 11. Still many won't give credit where it's due, that's why this series win is so sweet, burnol moment for many :kohli2

King Kohli was teasing SA team on home turf yesterday lol :bhajji

Just curious, why should any team pick their first choice Test XI .. Shouldn't they instead pick their first choice ODI XI if the series to be played is ODI series?

Same logic SA selected whom they deemed fit and not injured, but that doesn't suit narrative of few to discredit Indian convincing thrashing of SA!

While I love the sport, the fact is its still just a game.

No need of burnols and no need to stear away from reality Inida played well, yes! SA struggled yes! Is this the best SA XI in many years, No!

I dont remember last time 4, 5 players debuting (or playing their second game) for SA in one series. India was outstanding throughout but the 4-1 scoreline looks a bit inflamed taking into account the SA XI.

FAF, DQ were injured and ABD was injured for first three so its not like all the players were available. Yes but this is no excuse for SA and it cant undermine the Indian team performance. But, as I mentioned in my previous post the series victory margins and series scoreline looks bit inflamed, reasons mentioned in my previous post. That is just my opinion.

Fair enough, if India would have lost this series, same mob would have torn apart Team India and :kohli2 with harsh comments.

After Ind won, we are seeing only excuses in PP. Not many giving minimum credit to IND team for facing World No. 1 bowler and scoring 4 centuries and thrashing home team.

Faf and ABD is a loss.

QDK was in Terrible form. He was batting like a Tailender. Klaas has outperformed QDK.

So what should we call Pakistan's win against India in CT? Indian team should be either strong (because Pakistan can only beat stronger/competitive teams to claim their "true" wins!), but the problem is Indian team can never be strong because they never beat competitive sides! (They hardly get a chance to play against full-strength sides!)

Who was the passenger? Dhoni? I dont see any other passenger, all players were available and they selected who they deemed fit.

India selected all those that were available and who were their first choice. atleast five of those first choice sucked most of the time (Dhoni, Shreyas, Jadhav, Pandya and Bhuvi). SA did the same. They selected the first choice among those who were available and all of them sucked most of the time. An inform De Kock might have made a difference but he was woefully out of form whole tour and would have been dropped anyway. His replacement did much better than him anyway. Faf is just a good ODI player and made very little impact in the first ODI. He scored an hundred and India chased it with around five overs to spare. ABDV in form is a beast in bilaterals. He did play two matches and produced the same slam bang batting which he seems to prefer these days and had no impact. All of SA first choice bowlers were available and they did nothing of note and looked pretty average at home. India not only beat SA but beat them comprehensively in all the matches. In all four matches that India won, SA never looked like competing. In the match SA won, India were ahead most of the time and lost due to noballs , poor catching and rain. Again that loss is on India due to how poor their fielding was but remember rain only affected Indian bowling/fielding and not SA bowling and even then the match was pretty close. So with all stars aligned exactly as SA wanted was required to beat India and that too in a tight match.. That shows the gap between these teams in this ODI series.. So quit giving excuses and give some credit to India

Let me reiterate again, this was a pretty average Indian team where only 6 players out of 11 turned up in all the matches. So basically half of Indian team beat 9/11 th SA team comprehensively in their own den.. I am sure Indian supporters will sleep well today but will worry about the future :)

Saving themselves?

No one likes to lose 4-5 matches at home without even competing. Weird way to look at it. SA inability to play wrist spinners made this series one sided. SA was ranked 1 and playing at home. Then you can't even compete in matches ?

Losing or winning is one thing, but it's a poor performance. No one is saving anyone here.

Why would SA make themselves look bad against India of all countries where ratings are higher than anyone they will ever play?.

Because Junaids has declared that he will be traveling to South Africa to watch them play against Australia in the Tests, while he will not be doing the same for India

They weren't saving themselves. The injuries were unlucky timing. You have to give credit to India for playing well especially the spinners and Kohli.

One of pp classic excuse thread to deny credits to India...lol

No one is denying credit. It is clear India won. But it sounds like that's not enough, everyone must also accept that this SA team is the greatest ever :(

I wish I hadn't watched the matches first-hand, it would have been much easier to accept what our Indian friends want and pacify them.

Today for the sixth ODI the South Africans have picked what, their fourth choice players?

You are losing the argument. If you can't figure out their cluelessness against wrist spin yet then you need follow more cricket. India beat the crap out of them barely with 4 players.

I fancy Pakistan doing well here later this year. Specially on these low and slow pitches. Shadab might run riot looking at some of the techniques of these SA batsmen.

ABD is fourth choice? chalo bhai :))

Any way, still waiting for your response to post 112. Why has India not picked its first choice team and playing with India Z? Dropped 90% of Test players for this squad. No Saha, no Vijay, no Ishant etc.?

Then they should not have played. Excuses and more excuses, some PPers make more excuses than even SA fans. Get a life dude....

No point with OP alias 'Does Runs vs SL really Count?' guy

Anything about India he discredits ...everyone here knows it :shh

Don't you think by then SA would've learned their lesson and make super flat / super bouncy Hard tracks that don't aid spin ?

SA's old generation for some reason seem to be giving up too early. The youngsters are actually trying quite hard, lack of skill VS spin notwithstanding.

I mean W.r.t AB, dude needs to prove he's still a gun and fit for 2019. The SA team of the past had made it clear to Kallis , arguably the greatest SA player, that He wasn't in their plans for 2015 . Can't someone do a talking to , to the seniors this time. ?

NO matter how bad fan worship of Indian / Pakistani starts there exists, the sheer vitriol directed at losing players is good enough to keep the good ones perpetually motivated to perform (take Rohit for example) .

Shadab might do well. But from what i have seen he is like " restrict runs and batsman will throw his wicket away" type bowler. What the Indian bowlers did was to show courage and throw the ball up beating them in the air , getting more turn etc even if they got hit.

No he is not. Which Shadab Khan have you watched? A leg-spinner can never be a darter as you just described in your post lol. Shadab is quicker through the air than Chahal on average yes, but he floats it up as many times too and has probably the second best googly at international level.

South Africa missed Kallis, Smith, Gibbs, Rhodes, McMillan, Klusener, Pollock, Donald

India missed Sadagopan Ramesh, MSK Prasad, Laxmirathan Shukla, Subrajit Bannerji, Arshad Ayub, Maninder Singh

Fair Contest was missing!

Might not be darting . But flatter. Samuel Badree , Rashid Khan , Shadab etc. It is not just small loopy delivery that i am talking about. It is above the eyeline flight. And LOL , is there any ranking for googly at international level !! Simply asserting subjective opinion as a fact is not gonna cut dude.

What a great logic by OP, going by this logic we can say that all Indian Players' main focus will be on IPL (even most of the international players) because that is giving them the main money and "intense competition" as they say! So all the international games played between countries are name-sake, forced affairs! I guess only Pakistan and England take their international cricket seriously, so all their wins against other teams are meaningless because they are not competing against the BEST playing at their BEST MINDSET!

But Shadab was not so effective in NZ ODI's !
He was impressive in the ODIs and T20Is. Turned the match around in one of the ODIs. Spinners usually get the beating of their lives in NZ against NZ. Even their own spinners, who are in the top bracket of bowlers in LOIs, get a hammering.

Shadab could have made the impact which Chahal and Kuldeep made in SA series, pitches in NZ are not conducive to spinners, but still he could have helped Pak win 1 match at-least out of 5. Rated so high by Pak fans, not much we neutrals have seen in him yet like Babar.
