Kohli is no doubt great but I wouldn't compare him with past great. Today's game is mostly on dead pitches with decent bowlers, unlike the vicious bowlers of the past. I wouldn't rate Kholi better than the likes of say Lara, Miandad, Sachin. As for current Pakistani players, Azhar is good but not comparable, and Babar hasn't played much but does have a lot of potential.

You can lol all you want, but class of bowlers from the past is at a different level and batsmen who took on them regularly and consistently weighs more.

Yes, in ODIs Kholi sure could be greatest.

Lol Kohli has made almost all his runs this year overseas on difficult pitches against world class attacks. He is an undisputed all time great now.

Level of nostalgia is too high in this post.

Check out the Pakistani and SA bowling attacks that Lara faced (and made ton after ton against) during the mid 2000s. I would argue the Pakistani bowling attack was even worse than this one, and the SA bowling attack was Nel, Ntini and an over the hill Pollock. More often than not Tendulkar feasted on below average England and NZ bowling attacks. The SL attack SRT faced and feasted on in the 90s was garbage.

Yes there were great bowlers then, but there were mediocre attacks too. The SA, England, Australian and NZ bowling attacks of today are among their best in history. Rabada, Philander, Steyn, Ngidi, Anderson, Broad, Cummins, Starc, Hazelwood, Southee, Boult, Lyon are competent bowlers all of whom have a chance to go down as greats of the game.

When this discussion started the other two were probably better than Kohli in test cricket. Now things seem to have changed.
 
Fair to call Kohli a GOAT(or top 4-5 batsmen of all-time) in ODIs/T20s and an all-time great in tests as well.
 
Its interesting how every Pakistan batsman that gets compared to Kohli, starts to regress at an alarming rate :))

Azhar was in with a shout during his prime, when he was averaging 47 and was scoring heavily, but shafiq?!?! LOL

That dud isn't even good enough to lace Kohli's boots.

No Pakistani batsman in history deserves to stand on the same podium as Kohli, let alone these two mediocrities.
 
Let me say it clearly for my Pakistani brothers no one in the history of Pakistani cricket was even equal to Virat Kohli in any format and it seems like no one will be for the next 10 years at least. This I am saying while considering that Babar can be the best ever batsman we ever produced.

These numbers were back in October 2016. Both averaged 43 in tests with around 3500 runs.

Now in December 2019, the numbers are:-

Azhar Ali:-

Runs- 5731
Avg- 42

Virat Kohli:-

Runs- 7202
Avg- 55

This did not age well.

Today we are all appreciating Babar's almost 2 tons in 2 matches despite pitches being alright for batting and with Aus batters doing much better. It is a great milestone in the development of a player and is a clear marker of class of a future ATG player.

Same was case with Kohli 4 in 4 in 2014 except to a much higher level. Likes of Shafiq/Ali were never anywhere in his class and anyone who sees them play for 15 mins will know this.
 
All-time great players like Kohli almost always have incredible peaks. That is why ultimately separates them.

Statistically, they might not be a cut above the rest between the ages of 18 and 25 and when they are in their late 30s, but during their peak years, i.e. 27 to 33-34, they are absolutely relentless.

Azhar was never in the same ballpark as Kohli in terms of talent, but stats-wise, he could keep himself in touching distance till Kohli 2016. However, that is when Kohli’s peak started and it was last for another 3-4 years.
