Asghar Afghan has been removed as captain of Afghanistan just over a month before the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019, the Afghanistan Cricket Board announced on Friday, 5 April.

Afghanistan have, instead, opted for split captaincy, with Gulbadin Naib instated at the helm in one-day internationals and set to captain the side at the World Cup. Rahmat Shah will be in charge of the Test side, with Rashid Khan taking the Twenty20 International reins.

Asghar, who replaced Mohammad Nabi as captain in 2015, had a highly successful stint in the role. Under his leadership, Afghanistan became a Full Member of the ICC, and in March, they secured a historic maiden Test victory against Ireland in Dehradun.

The 31-year-old commanded the team to 33 ODI victories, including a triumphant campaign at the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2018, where they beat West Indies in the final in Zimbabwe. Afghan's record in T20Is is particularly impressive – they won 37 out of 59 games with him in charge.

Afghanistan will tour Scotland and Ireland in May to take on the hosts in two ODIs each. They will also lock horns with Pakistan and England in one-off ODIs before beginning their World Cup campaign against Australia on 1 June.

So Naib is the guy who will take AFG to the World Cup! Wonder why so late in the game?

Why have they changed their best captain ever just before a World Cup? Is it because his position in team was under threat due to his batting?

Whatever the reason, they should have done it last year instead of doing now. Also, why is Naib the captain? Rashid Khan should have been made the Captain.

Also, why is Naib the captain?.

Kab tak naib rahega :p Jokes aside, does seem like a strange decision. If they absolutely HAD to change captains at this late stage should have gone for Nabi given his experience. Naib will probably be a stopgap until Rashid takes over which makes it even stranger that they didn't go with someone experienced for the WC.

Sounds like they just announced his name as odi vice captain/T20I captain without asking him beforehand. Very strange.

Seems all well in the Afghanistan team

Lol, someone ask how changing captains last minute worked out for England last time around!

Power, greed. As soon as money started coming in from ICC, plus gaining test status so quick - more money/funds available from ICC. Greed came in and from that corruption kicked in.

Seems like Afghan cricket board and thr whole cricketing set up is the most corrupt in Subcontinent history.

THiS!

This won us the game today

:))

Who knew this one blunder would cost them a game agianst their arch rivals.

Gulbaddin today showed what a joke of a captain he is.

Pathetic captain this Naib. Glad from Pakistan's perspective that his incompetence helped us stay alive.

Shocking decision to bowl with trundler at the end when Imad couldn't even take single of spinners.

Gulbadin was the reason why Afghanistan lost today. Imad was clueless against spin and pounced on the opportunity to smack the trundler

It was Asghar Afghan making all the moves for Afganistan in the fielding specially towards the end..

Fair point but how exactly are Pakistan and afg arch rivals?

Gulbadin looked totally incompetent. He singlehandedly snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. His elevation to captaincy appears extremely suspicious.

Mohammad Nabi blames captaincy change for poor show in 2019 ICC World Cup for Afghanistan

Afghanistan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi believes it was the sudden change of captaincy before the World Cup which led to their dismal performance in the showpiece event held in England and Wales.

Just before the World Cup, the Afghanistan Cricket Board had removed Asghar Afghan from captaincy and made Gulbadin Naib the skipper of the national team for the quadrennial event.

Afghanistan failed to win even a single game out of all the nine matches they played in the group stage of the tournament and ended at the bottom of the points table.

"Before the World Cup we changed the old captain and that was the main thing why we couldn't play well as a team. That (new) captain never captained in his life. That's why we didn't do that well in the World Cup, and even though we had good games against India, Pakistan and West Indies, we lost those matches," Nabi said after Afghanistan's historic Test win over Bangladesh on Monday.

The all-rounder, who has retired from Test cricket, believes making Rashid Khan the skipper across formats will augur well for the team.

"It's all about the team combination. Before the World Cup, the board members changed the old captain and the combination didn't work in the World Cup," Nabi said. "Here with Rashid Khan as captain, he has the ability to lead the team. Besides that, me and Asghar (Afghan) support him a lot."

"But now it's totally changed. We have given chances to our young players. There are many young players for T20s and in this Test, we debuted three young players. This is the main thing we are focusing on and we have put up a young captain. He is the number one bowler in the world as well," he added.

Afghanistan will next face West Indies in three T20Is, three ODIs and one Test beginning November 5 in Dehradun.
