Ricky Ponting says England’s problems at the Ashes are far from over despite what could be a momentum-shifting win at Headingley.
England tied the series in Leeds by completing its greatest ever successful run chase (359) two days after it was rolled by Australia for 67.

The one-wicket win - already considered as one of the greatest of all time - covered for shortcomings with England’s batting, which Ponting described as “woeful”.

Ponting told the Unplayable Podcast that he’s not a believer in momentum swings in Test series and that England’s batting order is still there for the taking.

“I think England has got as many questions to answer as Australia,” Ponting told the podcast after the third Test. “Their batting has looked woeful.

“Certainly their top order batting has looked poor and Jos Buttler is battling away, playing as a specialist batsman and batting at No.7 and offering very little so far so they’ve got some questions to answer too.”

A lean run with the bat has seen Buttler slip down the order from No.5 to No.7, below third Test hero Ben Stokes and wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow. The right-hander is averaging just 9.16 for the series and made scores of five and one in Leeds.

He’s far from the only Englishman struggling this series with the bat.

Both Joe Root and Joe Denly boosted their series totals in the second innings at Headingley, but are still averaging just 29.33 and 24.50 respectively.

Their troubles pale in comparison to those of opener Jason Roy though.

His transition to Test cricket has been a failure to date - he averages 42.79 in ODIs but just 16.75 in the five-day game. Roy is also yet to pass double digits in his past four innings.

“It’s just a different game,” Ponting said of Roy switching from white ball to red ball.

“We’ve seen hundreds of players through time that have been able to dominate a white ball and then as soon as the ball changes colour they’ve got no idea.

“There have been a few. Jason Roy is probably exactly the same.”

Ponting pointed out the technical deficiencies on both sides, saying some of the batsmen in the series need everything going in their favour to score big.

He added: “It’s almost like they have to have everything go exactly right for them just to survive in the game.”

Ponting used England opener Rory Burns as an example after he made 133 at Edgbaston despite regularly being beaten by the bowlers throughout most of the innings.

“He played and missed 45 times,” Ponting said. “I don’t care how much the wicket does. All these things that they do wrong is just enough to survive in the game.

“The class players, they can do a lot of things wrong and still make runs. You see so many mistakes made by players, and I think Jason Roy will be a little bit like that.”

Ponting said one-day cricket is more forgiving to “little mistakes”, which the likes of Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and James Pattinson can better exploit in a Test match.

The five-Test series resumes on Wednesday night, when Australia and England face off in the fourth Test at Old Trafford.

They really do and changes are needed. There is the possibly of Roy being kept on and I think he should be persisted with till the end of he series, as opening batsmen can take time to grow. Butler however is currently pointless. If he is batting so poor that he comes down at 7 and has nothing else to his bow then why not add Ali back in as spinner/bat? Surely he is not any worse. Better not, why not add in a solid middle order batsman from the county circuit?

I know choices are slim but at this stage, anyone is better than Butler.

I'd drop both Roy and butler, Roy's failures are basically exposing root to early to the new ball

Ponting is right.

Drop Buttler, move Bairstow up to 5 and give Foakes the gloves.

Dunno how to fix the top order though, nobody is hammering at the door to the selector's room.

Both teams need to ans many questions.

Aus need to see who can take pressure off from Smith given he seems to be carrying all the pressure.

Lyon's form is also a stress as he shld have won game 3 for Aussies.

Tim Pane's own place isnt secure. With Wade a better batsmen and similar-ish keeper, whether they can drop him but thats the dilemma Aus have what Pak have with Sarfraz-Rizwan

Warner's form is also a big issue. He needs to score and put pressure on Eng.

For Eng

How they fit a Fit-Anderson.... go with all pace attack?
Roy, Buttler, Denly,Root, Bairstow all under serious pressure to score, Root did score runs but thats just 1 single score

How they use the spinners in the game...

So overall both teams weak and thts what makes it interesting. An Aussie team of 2000z would have eaten this Eng team like anything

true ben foakes is a must, no idea why he is being ignored. ollie pope will strengthen the batting. he must also come for roy

probably not a good idea, but that leaves bairstow the only option for opening. he will at leas be better than roy.

This is what I will look to go for;

Denly and Burns to open, Root at 3, 4 Stokes , 5 Bairstow, 6 Foakes, 7 Woakes/Curran, 8 Archer, 9 Broad, 10 Leach, 11 Anderson.

Too bowler-heavy imo. The bowling is already more than good enough. It’s the batting that needs extra padding.

Roy, Buttler and Woakes to be replaced by Morgan, Foakes and Curran; Denly to open, Root and Bairstow to play as top order batsmen only.

My opinion -

Denly
Burns
Root
Bairstow
Morgan (c)
Stokes
Foakes (wkt)
S.Curran
Archer
Leach
Broad

Do you really feel and think that the ECB would throw in Morgan who last played a Test 7 years ago and then on what basis just for his knocks in the WC?

Curran is great but he is more of a fifth bowling option who can bat. I wouldn’t consider him as a genuine test bowler.

Archer will settle the outcome, Australia take Archer and they win.

I would like to see this England lineup for next test:-

Burns
Roy
Denly
Root
Stokes
Bairstow
Foakes(wkt)
Curran
Archer
Broad
Leach/Anderson

Foakes for Buttler, Denly and Root switching positions and Curran for Woakes.

Nathan Lyon's missed run-out chance that denied Australia victory might be one of the images of a thrilling Headingley Test, but his captain Tim Paine is backing him to bounce back from the disappointment and be a major "weapon" for them in their quest to retain the Ashes.

Lyon's 6/49 in Birmingham in a match-haul of nine in the first Test was crucial in rolling England over for a 1-0 lead. He then took 3/68 in England's first innings at Lord's, but since then has gone for 0/102 and 2/114.

At Headingley, he overtook Dennis Lillee to be third on Australia's all-time list of highest wicket-takers. He could have added more to his tally, but as Paine pointed out, he has been unlucky. For example, in the third Test, a ball after the missed run-out, with England still needing two runs to win with only a wicket in hand, Lyon had a chance to be Australia's hero when he appeared to trap Ben Stokes in front. However, it was not given and Australia didn't have a review left.

Paine is convinced the series hasn't seen the last of Stokes v Lyon yet, and backed his off-spinner to be the one to "contain" the England all-rounder, who has picked up two match awards so far.

Urging his team-mates to hold on to their chances in the field, the skipper said, "I think Nathan Lyon in the last two Tests alone has got him out five or six times had we held our catches or referred our lbws. Lyono's still a huge weapon against him, and there's some things we've spoken about with our fast bowlers where we think we can do things a little better than him."

As Australia look to recover from the shock defeat in the third Test, they are still not certain who their fast bowlers will be for the fourth Test. Mitchell Starc, who comfortably finished as the leading wicket-taker in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019, still hasn't got a game, and made another case for himself by picking up three wickets in an over in their tour game in Derby.

"[Starc] has been working really hard in the nets on his control, on his lengths," said Paine. "I thought his new ball spell was really good, didn't get the wickets he deserved. He bowled with good pace on what looked to be slow wickets. We're happy with what we saw with the new ball, and we know what he can do when you get the tail in."

The fourth Test begins in Manchester on 4 September.

Why hasn't Curran played? He's much better than Woakes with both bat and ball.

Not sure about that, woakes is quality in England with bat and ball even though I'm beginning to think ausie pace bowlers have worked him over with the short ball when it comes to his batting

Both teams have a lot of questions to answer. Australia need to make another change in the batting as it has not been convincing so far.

I agree, neither team have performed very well all round in this series.
