Australia head into the Boxing Day Test at the MCG with the Ashes already secured, having swept the first three matches to take an unassailable 3–0 lead. England, bruised and searching for answers, now faces the challenge of salvaging pride in a series that has slipped away far too quickly.

Australia’s dominance has been emphatic: an eight-wicket win in Perth where they chased down 205 with ease, another eight-wicket victory in Brisbane after piling up 511 in the first innings, and a hard-fought triumph in Adelaide by 82 runs to seal the urn.

England’s batting collapses and inability to sustain pressure have been telling, while Australia’s balance—led by their top-order consistency and incisive bowling—has left Ben Stokes’ men without a foothold. As the 4th Test begins in Melbourne, the hosts will look to extend their streak, while England desperately seeks a performance that restores belief and avoids the humiliation of a whitewash.

I think England should approach this 4th Test without the Bazball nonsense. Try to play proper/traditional Test cricket.

England will investigate reports of Ashes drinking

England will investigate reports of players drinking excessively during a break from the Ashes series in the beach town of Noosa.

The England squad spent four nights on the Queensland coast between the second and third Tests.

Several outlets, including the BBC, reported that some players were drinking for a significant portion of their time in Noosa, as well as on two previous days in Brisbane, the venue for the second Test.

Although they returned an improved performance in the third Test in Adelaide, England were beaten to ensure they cannot win back the Ashes from Australia.

The home side have taken an unassailable 3-0 lead in only 11 days of cricket.

England director of cricket Rob Key told BBC Sport: "Headlines can be misleading at times, saying it's a stag do and stuff like that.

"Stories of players drinking six days solid - that's unacceptable. We'll be looking into seeing what the facts are as opposed to the things that have been embellished or elaborated on."

The break in Noosa was arranged in advance of the Ashes tour and went ahead despite England falling 2-0 behind after two Tests.

While the entire squad was present in Noosa, former Kent and England batter Key was in another part of Queensland.

Players were told to expect media attention and they were captured by TV cameras and photographers.

That included shots of some members of the squad drinking at an outside table of a bar on the main high street in the town.

"When you see a picture of five or six guys sitting down for lunch, a couple of them having drinks, you need to see what's going on with that," said Key.

"If it's true that it became a stag do and people are out drinking all the time excessively, that's not acceptable. I don't agree with a drinking culture. I don't like a drinking culture."

Key also said he previously looked into reports that white-ball captain Harry Brook and batter Jacob Bethell were drinking the night before a match on the limited-overs tour of New Zealand that preceded the Ashes.

A clip of Brook and Bethell was shared on social media, reportedly taken in Wellington the night before the third one-day international on 1 November.

"I didn't feel like that was worthy of formal warnings, but it was probably worthy of informal ones," said Key.

"There wasn't any formal action. We've had four years where we've had none of these issues really, with any of the players, and there's a whole process that we put in place for stuff like that - for what you do if they're out of line.

"That was a bit of a wake-up call for what they're going into. I don't mind players having a glass of wine over dinner. Anything more than that, I think is ridiculous."

Despite the questions over the behaviour of some players in Noosa, Key defended their right to take the break from the Ashes.

Brook, Bethell, Ben Duckett, Jofra Archer and others could spend almost six months away from home following the tours of New Zealand, Australia, and the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka in the new year.

"Harry Brook is going to only be at home for six days this entire winter," said Key.

"We have to create a time where these players can get away from cricket because they're not going to do it by being at home.

"We live in an age as well where it's impossible to avoid cricket. I sit there on my phone and every Instagram thing comes up. I know that players say they shouldn't look at it, but they do.

"You can't escape cricket, especially on an Ashes series and the scrutiny. Getting away and being able to just forget about that and live like a normal person is really important."

Ho dear.
Perfect Preparations for a Ashes Test Match.

It has been a disaster of a tour for England.

I think biggest blunder England made was to make Brendon McCullum the coach of the Test team. What were they thinking?

McCullum himself was not a good Test player. His carefree approach is not suitable for Test. He started this carefree attitude.

England should get a new Test team with a new coach (a coach who understands and respects Test cricket).

England became #1 in Test when they had Andy Flower as the coach.

A serious coach like Andy Flower is needed for Test format.

Crawley says 3-2 is still a good result. if Australia drops the guard they can sneak back in given that htey will be missing 2 of their main threats

He has to say it.

It may have been good results if series was live going into final test.

But winning two after losing first three so dramatically, and winning against Aussie team with players out injured, isn't a big achievement.

Oh yes, can't forget the latest one. Where his team mates choked in the final session
That is where stupid stupid stupid came . It was no choking. Pant is not a choker. He is just a stupid. When Australia gave everything up and tossed the ball to Head match was as good as over. Then came the brain fade. Plus Jaiswal run out. Jaiswal dropped like 4 or 5 catches. India has lost a lot of tests in 2025 due to brain freeze. Bumrah couldn't do everything on his own. Needed support. Siraj was a bit off color in that series. Also Indian bowling changes were extremely weird as they did not give ball to Sundar for 70 overs

Coming from a team supporters who are yet to draw a test in australia since 1995. I mean todi saram...... :klopp :kp
Despite two excess baggges Rohit/Kohli India had a chance to level the series. TOo many things wen against India. From toss to loss of players , tense atmosphere. Rememebr Rohit fiasco. Then Ashwin's shocking retirement. Clarity of thought was missing from team management. Yet we were in the series till the last innings of the series unlike England who got stuffed in 11 days

You know why Aussies hate English? This is why?

This picture summaraizes the tour so far lol Look of two guys totally giving up. They can still win a test may be 2. But this is the most over-promised English unit in history.

ALthough i love to troll English for their not so humble talks ahead of series i expected some fiery contests with 2 145k bowlrs and stokes who can touch 145k. I just could not see a moment where English bowlers bullying them. Hunters became hunted at the hands of Travis Head. Watch how young Shamar Joseph bowled, with such hostility. I couldn't see anything like this form England bowlers despite having high release speeds

Alot of the England players are carrying Mental baggage when it comes to Touring Australia. Its clearly evident now.

man that boxing day test and this aussies test team coming with cummins, starc, lyon and boland/hazelwood and smith at the great MCG was something else sadly it won't happen this time

You got lucky draw due to rain otherwise it would be 4-1.....

In wisden cricket English pundits during discussion while doing the post mortem they went through every series they played. While discussing about their pakistan tour they gotto say this "To be one nil up and lose 2-1 to an inferior team like pakistan team is lazy"

England going full Pakistan in Australia.

Off field shenanigans being blamed for bad results, board promising to investigate, media running wild with stories...

Is Intikhab Alam available to do a report ?

They are right, Pakistan is not a good test side.

Stories dont seem too wild. They were out getting p!ssed for four days. Anybody who has had any experience with White Brits and nights outs knows it not going to be tame. These guys drink a lot, and getting wrecked is the fun part of it. Very immature to do it on tour, especially when 2-0 down!

There's a video circulating of a clearly intoxicated Ben Duckett who's got no idea what planet he's on.

Barmy Army fans are coming out with stories about encountering players worse for wear.

It seems that after the Covid-induced isolation of the previous tour, they've gone the other extreme on this tour by being too lax.

They are trying to come up with reasons that are not the real reasons. It is not like Aussies don't drink. There is certain style of play required. Didn't Ben stokes say guys like Alistair cook Andrew strauss won't find a spot in his side. Seriously? Their ability to grind them down in 2010 was one of the reason why they won. When there is working model available saying "We have a new thing here which will be more exciting than other models" is daft. Alyssa healy summarizes nicely what you need to do well here.

Tour of Australia has always had its attachments. Just this time, the Media, and the EX players ( Hasbeens) are on their case to get their own back. Even though I agree with the media regarding the preparations, they should have been better.

Results wise, I agree, there is comparisons with Pakistan, England have stank the Place out in Australia again!

Its now rooted deeply in them , they need to change management and unlearn .

Unlearn? They have to change personnel. These guys by nature bats like this. That is why they were even backed. Otherwise crawley won't be playing here. They had tuk tukers before. Didn't work. That is why they picked these players. It is their natural game.

England Men name XI for fourth Ashes Test

England Men have named their team for the fourth Ashes Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, starting on Boxing Day.

England have made two changes to the XI that played in the third Test in Adelaide.

Fast bowler Jofra Archer has been ruled out for the remainder of the tour with a left side strain and Surrey batter Ollie Pope misses out.

Warwickshire’s Jacob Bethell comes into the side and will bat at number three. Surrey seamer Gus Atkinson returns after missing the third Test.

Jacob bethell savior with no first class century. He is one of thsoe "potential picks" by Rob key. Nobody knows whether he has the ability. They just picked him. Failed in the oval test. Most likely will fail here. So Bashir is waste of space.

Stokes vows to 'protect' players, Archer out of Ashes

Another England fast bowler injured as Stokes issues emotional defence in face of 'pile on'

An emotional Ben Stokes vowed to close ranks around his players amid ongoing fallout from their mid-Ashes Noosa getaway, as England's tour went from bad to worse after Jofra Archer became their latest bowler to go down with injury.

A pace attack hyped as the quickest England have ever brought here has now seen its two fastest pacemen go down with tour-ending injuries as Archer was revealed to have suffered a side strain during last week's Adelaide Test.

Mark Wood was sent home with a knee injury last month after bowling just 11 overs for the tour, with Archer now joining him having sent down 80 overs across the first three Tests. The 30-year-old has endured an injury-plagued career and spent four years on the sidelines before returning in July.

Gus Atkinson has replaced him in the visitors' XI while Jacob Bethell has replaced misfiring No.3 Ollie Pope for the Boxing Day Test. Pope is averaging 20.83 with the bat for the series.

But Ben Duckett, the subject of an ECB investigation after footage purportedly showing the 31-year-old intoxicated between the second and third Tests emerged this week, has held his spot despite averaging 16 for the series.

Cricket boss Rob Key held a pitch-side conversation with Duckett as England players inspected the MCG wicket on Wednesday after the ECB confirmed it was "establishing the facts" regarding the Duckett video.

"We are aware of content circulating on social media," read an England and Wales Cricket Board's statement issued in response to a video that purports to

"We have high expectations for behaviour, accepting that players are often under intense levels of scrutiny, with established processes that we follow when conduct falls below expectations. We also support players that need assistance."

Key had told the UK media earlier this week, before the Duckett footage was posted online, that the team's drinking habits would be looked into as the team's trip to Queensland's Sunshine Coast after going down 2-0 in Brisbane continues to come under scrutiny.

In 2017, Duckett was fined $2,700 for pouring a drink over Jimmy Anderson's head in a Perth bar on an England Lions tour. He was suspended for the rest of the tour as the ECB gave him a "final written warning".

On the field this summer, Duckett has been a major disappointment having not passed 30 in six innings having arrived in Australia as one of Test cricket's leading openers.

But England had no one to replace him with even if they wanted to; Bethell was their only back-up batter in their 16-man squad and Pope was the batter the tourists wanted to axe.

Stokes, who missed the 2017-18 Ashes while he was the subject of a police investigation over a Bristol street-brawl, said he knew first-hand how a public pile-on can affect people. Stokes was found not guilty of affray in August 2018.

The star allrounder stressed he would stand by his players at all costs.

"It's never a nice place to be in when, not only the media world but also the social media world, is just piling on top of you. It's a very tough place to be in as an individual," Stokes told reporters.

"When you're 3-0 down and you've lost the series, everything you say, everything you do gets scrutinised – and rightly so.

"You don't really have a leg to stand on when you've lost three games in a huge series like this. When you win, everything's great, when you're losing, it's not."

Stokes admitted he had his work cut out to keep his players' focus on winning the final two Tests of the series. His players appeared in good spirits at training two days out for a Boxing Day Test which could see 2013-14's record Ashes crowd of 91,082 toppled.

The 34-year-old, who conceded his teammates were "hurting" after squandering this Ashes series in 11 days, the equal-fastest ever, had opened his pre-Test press conference with an impassioned defence of his group.

"I'm obviously aware of the reports and everything circulating around right now," said Stokes.

"My main concern right now is with my players. How I handle this moment right now is the most important thing to me. The welfare of everyone in there – and probably some certain individuals as well – is the most important thing to me right now.

"This kind of stuff – I don't know if 'close to me' is the right wording – but is something that I have first-hand experience of how it can affect people, and my role as England captain is to protect my players as much as I possibly can.

"We have a goal still to try and achieve out here on this trip. It's not gone anywhere near to plan whatsoever but we've still got two games of cricket to play. We've still got a lot of efforts and energies to put in for the remaining of this tour.

"Looking after my players is one of the main things that I need to get out of this, because we need to go out there and win two games of cricket.

"I will always protect my players as much as I possibly can and right here, right now, that is my main job as England captain, is to ensure that they have my backing."

Unlearn? They have to change personnel. These guys by nature bats like this. That is why they were even backed. Otherwise crawley won't be playing here. They had tuk tukers before. Didn't work. That is why they picked these players. It is their natural game.

Your natural game should be able to adapt according to the situation not try to dominate without giving respect to conditions. Grafting is also part of batsman ship.

Those who want to blame it on drinking are either doing that because of their own values/principles or are looking for easy excuses.

As if Aussies like Travis Head don't drink and still smash English bowlers, playing a similar style to Duckett

It's the lack of skill that is being exposed. Controlled pace is what is needed in Australia.

When India won here in 2020/21, our attack was 85mph + and were even more accurate than the OZ attack(higher percentage of deliveries on a good length and in the channel outside off) and that made the difference.

There's no other way to do it. Short pitched bowling and funky fields only work on designer pitches in England.

YOu know crawley averages 31 even in first class. Only reason he is playing ahead of otehrs is because he can be aggressive. Stokes has even said Alistair cook, Strauss type of batsmen have no place in the side. They handpicked players who can be aggressive all the time. Even Harry brook is aggressive in domestic. IT is not like they are playing aggressive only here.

So no cummins, hazlewood, lyon and now no Archer, no Wood....
Suddenly its now the secodn XI of bowlign attack for both teams.

Hope Eng gives a better fight at the MCG...

Stokes has talked like a idiot since last 2 years or so , carried away by the '' Are you not entertained '' image ! When ENG won chasing over 370 against IND , this fool said he half wanted to be given a target of 450 !

Theres a difference between a normal drink or Two, and getting xxssed in a Stag do.

The drinking goes hand in hand with the lack of preparation. I don't think anybody has an issue with drinking, players need to find a way to relax, issue is whether this became a 'brits abroad' type of break.

Since 2012 Pakistan wins 3 series, 2 draws on England, 2 series win by England only...how its inferior?

Not more than the Aussies drink. Only an issue because they got their bxxksides handed to them on the pitch and now it's being used as a stick to beat them

So he comes back in test cricket after a four years hiatus due to an injury, plays five games and now will disappear for who knows how long again ? Lol

What a shamble, lol seems like he only made comeback to defeat India at Lords at most hilarious of circumstances

Oh yes so stupid of them...in hindsight they would have let him play the 5th Test to win that series, given how Ashes panned out for poms
Yeah. Hilarious how England could not even that series despite Archer coming into the side
