Asia Cup 2018 schedule announced - Pakistan to play India on 19th September

No this is not a joke.

Bigger joke will be next year when indian players will be busy playing in IPL till 20th May and the World Cup will start from 30th May.

Not just Indian players. Most of the best players in the world barring Pakistan. So it would mean Pakistan would be fresh and raring to go.

MUMBAI: The paradox of hedonism, one that refers to practical difficulties encountered in pursuit of pleasure, has taken the BCCI by the scruff of its collar right now. In pursuit of making the most of cricket's juiciest clash anywhere in the world - which is

India vs Pakistan

- the two factions in Indian cricket (read: CoA & members) are busy fighting a proxy battle.

It was the Indian cricket board's turn to host the Asia Cup tournament this year and the prospect of hosting Pakistan is the first that came to mind when the roadmap was laid out. In line with the mandatory procedures, the BCCI wrote to the home ministry of the central government, the Prime Minister's office and the union sports ministry to ask for the necessary directives. In turn, the centre's view on the matter was clear: Host it anywhere but India.

The Indian board then went ahead and decided to make the Emirates Cricket Board the host for the tournament. That decision now remains central to a very bitter battle brewing between members of BCCI and the court-appointed administrators running BCCI.

The members say by allowing Emirates Cricket Board to host the Asia Cup on behalf of India, the BCCI is making way for operational expenses to increase by more than double. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is committed to an allotment of US$2.5m to host the tournament and members add: "The tournament could've been hosted in any of the ACC nations and the costs would've been less than half of what is being spent right now". The Emirates Cricket Board is also eligible for maximum revenue of US$5.5m from ticketing revenue to be earned from the entire tournament and anything in excess of that US$5.5m will come to BCCI.

It is only the prospect of an India vs Pakistan clash - not once, but twice - that brings value to a tournament like the Asia Cup purely from a commercial perspective. With the tournament scheduled to be played in the ODI format this year, and Star TV - official broadcasters - committed to nearly a US$95m payout for the overall ACC rights, the stakes are high.

In this high-stakes game, CoA - locked in a battle with the members - says the decision to shift the tournament to UAE and not any other neutral is based on certain justified and logical conclusions. "Bangladesh has already hosted the tournament thrice. Some freshness needs to be induced. Second, UAE will ensure gate revenue like no other neutral venue because of the diaspora. Third, the expenses being incurred for 13 Asia Cup matches are still less than expenses BCCI had incurred for 15 Indian Premier League (IPL) matches in 2014," say sources.

But that's not enough to convince members. They insist that there's a "grander design" to the tournament being "gifted" to the Emirates Board and not any other country. That aside, the members do not agree with the financial figures being presented by the BCCI CEO's office. "The figures being pedalled are hogwash. Why should India lose money for a tournament they don't need to host in the first place? It's a scam," say members. The Asia Cup - scheduled for September this year - is caught in the middle of all this madness even as the Indian cricket team contemplates the idea of playing back to back matches, against Nepal and Pakistan on successive days, once the tournament begins.

We won CT in 2013 which was played 1 week after IPL. Also you cant compare international cricket with IPL. In the test series all main Indian players are involved till the end. IPL is bit of a hit and miss. Say CSK vs MI final, only Dhoni, Bumrah and Rohit will be really affected. Also stress of test cricket is different from T20s

You missed the bigger pic here, INJURIES! Yes, even in IPL, injury happens.

Good point. Really terrible scheduling of IPL. Why on earth would you play IPL and risk your body just before the World Cup?

Although, I dont hate IPL, but this scheduling is absolutely a joke of planning.

Team play 5 days of test cricket, so playing 2 ODIs in 2 days should not be an issue for any side!

Anyone know the exact timing of the asia cup matches, in PST? cricinfo and cricbuzz are showing 10:00 am and i am wondering how is it possible 10:00 am start in odis in UAE? can anyone please confirm the timing of the games?asiacup.jpg

While some ticketing websites are showing 2, 2:30pm start. I am wondering why timing of the games are n't mentioned even on the asian cricket council site? Poor stuff..

Another thing is there will be elections during that period in India. Where will they play this time? :inti

im confused as well, i live in canada, and im not sure when the match will start our time

That would be okay if they were day matches, but all limited over matches in the UAE are day/night, and they usually start at 6AM eastern time.

Usually that is the case, sometimes i think even 5 am worst case scenerio, but i think this match is a day match, not a day and night but i can be wrong.

Match timings of Asia Cup.

There are lots of confusions regarding the timings of matches.Cricbuzz Showing 11.30 Ist. Can anyone please confirm the timings.

I have never been so confused for an india vs pakistan match in regards to time, the reason why i am stressing is im trying to figure out if i take a whole day off, or do i do a half day at work, and do i skip school as well......i think ill just skip the whole day for both work and school lol

Yeah saw this they posted it on cricinfo as well I'm so happy it will be 7:30 am start time here in Montreal Canada will be skipping school and work :) so Pakistan better win lolz

Asia Cup 2018. Rohit Sharma & Co’s base shifted; India to play only in Dubai

The Indian team will be reaching late for the Asia Cup and starting their campaign late as well (September 18 vs qualifiers Hong Kong). Sri Lanka will have played two matches before India start their campaign but they will have no problems whatsoever. Everything will remain exclusive for Rohit Sharma & Co, including the venue.

Mirror understands that the Men in Blue have been booked in Grand Hyatt in Dubai while the rest of the teams -- Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Hong Kong --competing in the tournament are being put up in the InterContinental.

Initially, the Indian team was also to be accommodated along with the other five but the bookings in the InterContinental were cancelled recently. Fresh bookings were done at Grand Hyatt.
Besides, the Indian team will play all their matches at the Dubai International Stadium, although there is a second venue for the competition --Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi. India will not be travelling to Abu Dhabi at all and should they reach the semi-finals, it has been agreed upon that the India semi-final will be played in Dubai. The final, of course, is in Dubai itself on September 28.

No. The way we play gives us the ranking points and you know who is who and where in the table. Go check on the rankings.

Then why beat your chest about the money and the influence of your board?

You just admitted that money makes no differnce to actual results and cricketing victories is all that matters.

So picking your own venue or having influence, is largely irrelevant when it comes to actual results.

So now that you have said its irrelevant then what's all this rant all about? Much ado about nothing?

Was a simple response to the second post, where the poster was bragging about the "dough" BCCI brings.

Its unfortunate that you found it to be a "rant".

kingusama92 - See above. That first India v Pakistan may truly be a dead-rubber now that the news are saying India will only play in Dubai.

The Bangladesh team selected for the Unimoni Asia Cup 2018 began training in earnest at Dubai Sports City’s ICC academy facility on Monday evening from 6-9 pm. The cricketers put in three full hours of work, including a couple of hours in the training nets.

Former ODI Captain Shakib Al Hasan worked through the duration, starting with fitness work and moving to a long session in the nets with the bat. Al Hasan spoke about his team and their preparations ahead of the Asia Cup.

“We are confident enough we had a very good series against West Indies, especially in ODIs and T20s so we will take that confidence into the Asia Cup. Both the teams (Afghanistan and Sri Lanka) have been playing good cricket especially in 50 overs, so we have to play our best to go into the next round."
The ODI Vice-Captain added

“We want to take one game at a time, but obviously the ultimate goal is to win the trophy. This is what everyone is here for. To get that success we need to get the process right so we will be looking more into our process rather than on the trophy."

Speaking about the opening match of the Unimoni Asia Cup 2018 Al Hasan added. “Sri Lanka has a very good side, and a number of players who can win matches, so we cannot focus on just one or two guys. Eleven players will be playing so we have to perform well against all of them.”

Meanwhile Sri Lanka Captain Angelo Matthews had this to say about his team’s challenge for the coveted trophy “This is Asia’s mega tournament and it is being played every two years. It is a tournament all the teams take very seriously. We are really looking forward to this tournament, and playing against Bangladesh and Afghanistan. They are both top teams, and have been playing extremely good cricket, and we look forward to playing really good cricket to beat them too."

Dubai international Stadium is preparing itself for one of the highlights of its decade long career as a cricket venue, and speaking about the conditions and pitch was Dubai International Stadium Head Curator, Toby Lumsden. “Over the summer we have had a chance to construct two brand new pitches for the stadium, due to our high work load and demanding cricket schedule."

"I think for the upcoming Asia Cup with the high quality teams that we have got coming, we plan on producing good cricket wickets. Traditionally first innings scores have been 260, hopefully we can build on that and make them a little higher pushing for about 270, but it is difficult during this time of year in September."

Lumsden added, “I think the conditions that will be present during the Asia Cup will be determined mostly by the weather. We will have hot days, possibly humid nights with some heavy dew is possible. The conditions will change throughout the day. Maybe reasonably fast conditions in the afternoon session, and then it might seam a little bit at night time and maybe get a bit of grip and spin for the evening.”

Bangladesh will train again on Tuesday morning from 10 am – 1 pm at the ICC Academy.

For a guy who hates IPL, you always looks the one who got the most updates at the earliest

Also FYI I am a cricket fan. I am concerned about the lack of practice before World Cup. Ideally we should be in England at least.

Same old dialoguebazi. Try something new.

Also FYI I am a cricket fan not a part timer like you. I am concerned about the lack of practice before the World Cup. Ideally we should be in England atleast 3 weeks before the World Cup but we will be busy playing this League. I know you will enjoy seeing players getting injured before the World Cup.

If Pakistan wins Group A, will their final Super 4 Match be on the 25th or 26th?

The schedule is currently as follows:

Group A Winner v Group B Winner in Dubai on September 25th
Group A Runner-Up v Group B Runner-Up in Abu Dhabi on September 26th

It was reported this week, however, that India will play all their matches in Dubai.

If Pakistan wins Group A, would the match on the 25th be changed to the 26th?

It would it remain on the 25th?

Mr Veeru,
We understand you dont like IPL...and injuries caused in IPL may sometimes affect team balance.

But blaming IPL solely for injuries is like asking Ronaldo or Messi to miss club matches before FIFA world cup. IPL may be meaningless to you but for many players it is time to make lifetime money during 10 years or so lifespan of a cricketer.
They are sport professionals and are contracted and they have to respect and deliver the contract agreements. For them they have to make most of opportunity be it at club level or country level as and when they get opportunity.
Yes ,risk of injury stays, but then one could just get injured during practice or simply slip in the washroom.
Thats a risk every sportperson has to cope with unless BCCI pays them to not play IPL.
And BCCI will not make money ,if star players are missing from IPL.
