As the dust settles on Pakistan's thrilling victory over India, attention will turn to the next challenge this Wednesday - a tough game vs Afghanistan.

Would you make any changes in personnel or strategy for that match?

Discuss.

Hopefully, Babar scores at least a fifty against these guys. I'm starting to worry about Babar's form. Afghanistan's spinners are good but they aren't as good as people make them out to be. We all saw how well Sri Lanka played them.

So in case Dahani is out of the cup, we will fly in a replacement right?

Haider has to play at some point. He too can be a game changer like nawaz was today.

Pakistan needs to attack the Afghanistan spinners like Sri Lanka did. Play Rashid like Anil Kumble. If you destroy their spinners, that is half the battle won.

Our lefties will be the key in this match. I don’t have much faith in right handers against Rashid. So it will be up to Fakhar, Nawaz and Khushdil to stand up to the Afghan bowlers and make the best out of the situation.

abs cannot allow the seamers to settle ... i dont think Pak will attack Rashid but will go for the rest ...

Going to be an amazing match. Sadly whoever will win the toss will win the match. Babar is a sitting duck vs Rashid. Babar can't play him whenever Babar is in top form, this time it seems like Babar is not in a good nick.

Pakistan just needs to play sensible cricket to win. Afghanistan will be under a lot more pressure and their emotions will be high.

Our lefties will be the key in this match. I don’t have much faith in right handers against Rashid. So it will be up to Fakhar, Nawaz and Khushdil to stand up to the Afghan bowlers and make the best out of the situation.

They also have Mujeeb & Nabi as right arm off spinners so I think our right handed batsmen will be more of a factor to tackle them.

Fakhar is going to struggle against Nabi & Mujeeb.

Sensible cricket to be played , try to reduce mistakes.

I would like to see Openers play positive cricket , Nawaz slotted at 8 , shows the have pretty decent depth.Need to utilize the batting depth.

Might not need to promote Nawaz as Afghanistan will have two offies. Maybe Shadab at no 4 to score and tackle Nabi and 1-2 remaining overs of Mujeeb can be handy.

As much as I want Haider to play, not sure who he can replace. Can be a tactical move to make him come in and replace one of the lefties in the middle but, that would be purely tactical and doubt many teams in the world would do so. Also there is Rashid to tackle which lefties can do better.

Do we need to change? rest bowlers such as Naseem or is it all hands on deck to secure a final place.

From a report:

According to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Rizwan suffered the strain after he made a risky landing on his right leg while he was behind the stumps. The MRI will act as a precaution since the player continued despite the injury and score a fantastic 71-run knock.

Asia Cup 2022: Pakistan v Afghanistan | 4th Match | Super 4 | Dubai | 7 Sep | Pre-Match Discussion

Please pardon if this is not the thread to discuss this particular topic - and I´m unable to find a thread suited for this discussion - but I´m really loving the format of the ongoing Asia Cup. It´s a pretty low profile tournament, we all know it, and most, if not all, of the hype is about the India-Pakistan game. The current format almost guarantees two encounters between these two sides and, if things fall into places, a third seems likely in the face of a final - depending on the upcoming results, of course. Another thing which I would stick to, even for the future, is that the tournament should be continued to be played in the T20 format. The format right away allows some of the other weaker teams, such as Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, to come into the picture. The primary reason behind some of the thrilling matches that we´ve had even between other teams is that it´s being played in the T20 format. To be honest, actually, ODI matches of late even between India and Pakistan have been pretty boring and one-sided ones, and the last good contest that I remember between these two teams was a long time back in 2014. On the other hand, T20I matches between these teams have mostly provided great thrill and entertainment right from the famous tie from the World T20 2007, the first T20I match ever between these teams, from what I remember. So, for the sake of fun, thrill, and entertainment, T20 is the format to go with, fellows.

Also, please correct me if I´m wrong, didn´t the ODI Asia Cup of 2004 and 2008 have the same or similar tournament format? Or am I getting this wrong?

Do we need to change? rest bowlers such as Naseem or is it all hands on deck to secure a final place.

We must absolutely try give 2-3 overs to a 6th bowler. You can't gamle with bowling only 5 bowlers every match, one of them may have a bad spell or get injured and you need to get others in.

It just doesn’t get easier for Babar does it?

No halwa medium pacers to feast off and get his runs tally back. Instead he will be dealt the challenge of Mujeeb straight away. He will have a chance to release pressure against Naveen and the left arm seamer if he survives, but then he will have to deal with his chief tormentor Rashid Khan!

Massive game for Pakistan and Babar Azam this

I will be backing afghanistan to defeat us. I love the afghan team and want them in the final. Want to see afghanistan be a succesful team that gets respected.

I can already vision Fakhar Zaman dancing down the track to Nabi and not reaching the ball

1. Mohammed Rizwan (wk)
2. Babar Azam (c)
3. Fakhar Zaman
4. Haider Ali
5. Asif Ali
6. Ifitkhar Ahmed
7. Mohammed Nawaz
8. Shadab Khan
9. Haris Rauf
10. Mohammed Hasnian
11. Shahnawaz Dhani

They will lose to Pak, again!

Afghanistan have come close to beating us a number of times now. Only a matter of time before they eventually do.

Pakistan will go with the same team unless any of the pacers are injured

Also don’t mind having Dahani back in the XI instead of Hasnain

Pak should be able to dismiss Afg easily. I personally don’t see this contest lasting more than 3/4th of the game. But of course, we know that Pak can make a game out of any situation.

Afg chance to upset Pak is battling 2nd and catch Pak off guard via spinners on trash UAE wickets.

I admire Afg cricket as a young cricket nation. Ibrahim and Rahmatullah were good to watch against SL. I will be very surprised if they would have the same success against the much stronger Pak unit.

I would try to secure a finals place with all hands on deck approach and then rest some players against Sri Lanka

The match is in Sharjah. Sharjah suits Afghanistan perfectly. I would rank them slight favourites. It'll be extremely difficult for our top 3 to score against Mujeeb, Rashid and Nabi on those low slow pitches at Sharjah.

In Dubai, Pakistan would've easily won if the match got played on a true pitch like we saw against India, but Sharjah is a completely different test altogether.

Shahnawaz Dahani has shown significant improvement and medial team is continually monitoring him

Mohammad Rizwan has undergone a MRI scan and it's result will be compiled tomorrow, following which decisions will be made.

Presently, he is going well.

We should fly in a replacement keeper. With the WC next month, there's no need to risk Rizwan for this cup.

Fakhar needs to be dropped but since our signboard coach doesn't have any clue or say so same team will play.

Yeah I agree. Sharjah is the best possible venue for Afghanistan.
We mostly struggle vs spin. Rizwan will have a key role once again.

Persist with Fakhar, he is a match winner on his day,

Dop Khushdil : bring in Haider in his place

If Dhani improving , send Hasan Ali home, no need for a free trip to Asia cup.

Babar is clueless against Rashid, i'm just hopping Rizwan is fit to play. Otherwise this game is gone before the toss.

I would like the PCB to arrange frequent T20 and ODI games against Afghanistan at home. They are a formidable limited overs team in Asian conditions.

Most likely Babar will retain the same team.

Whatever lineup we pick, we need to maximise right-left batting combinations at the crease to counter their spinners.

Also hoping no crowd trouble like the last two PAK-AFG matches.

Wouldn’t mind playing Hassan Ali as a pinch/hitter slogger against Afghanistan spinners

Pakistan tried something out of the box when they sent Nawaz at 4, and it worked beautifully

Who knows if we can shield Babar by throwing in the sloggers against the spinners how it may be such a powerful counter attack?

Pakistan ideally should bat first & pile 170+
Afghanistan are nervy chasers and we have seen it on many occasions including 2019 world cup matches and 2019 wc qualifiers.

Pakistan generally gets edgy & nervous chasing against Afghanistan, as we saw it in 2019 & 2021. If Afghanistan bats first then even a score of 150-160 can make Pakistan nervous. It is a minnow team who more often than not choke. Afghanistan lost all 9 matches in 19 & 3 out of 5 matches in 21, so i do not know why they get into heads of Pakistani players & fans, a team with modest record of winning 2 out of 14 matches in recent world cups shall be treated as minnow.

In 2021 T-20 match They were 76/6 and pathetic 3rd class spell by Hasan Ali allowed them back in the game. Shaheen got way too emotional & did not bowl well.

I am going to Sharjah to attend the game. My last experience of attending Pak-Afghanistan game was last year where pindi boy stole the show in the end with 4 massive sixes. We do not need any more spice. Go & destroy them abd comeback with one sided win. Ruthlessness.

Pakistan should go in with the same team and Pakistan should win quite comfortably.

Afghanistan have come close to beating us a number of times now. Only a matter of time before they eventually do.

This is absolutely true. It's just a matter of time. They are getting better each day. We would be beaten in the ODI world cup if not for their captain. I still feel he was playing for us.

Pakistan should go in with the same team and Pakistan should win quite comfortably.

It will be a nail-biter no chance of a comfortable win for Pakistan. Babar is Rashid's bunny & also Fakhar record is very poor vs Afghanistan(although the sample size is very limited). Babar will struggle badly vs Rashid as he had every time he played against Rashid.

Rashid Khan is the one I fear the most. We know Afghanistan try the most against us then any other side. We need to get Rizwan fit where as Dahani can be replaced by Arshdeeep!:))):))):)))

Funny for mentioning Afg improving. How about Pak? Pak is the most improved side among ALL the teams in this tournament. Fakhar and Babar find their mojo, game over for Afghans. Let’s see if Afg can manage to challenge Pak pace attack. If they do, I am ready to eat humble pie.

Surprise Afghani spinners by sending Asif to open with Nawaz - a great left hand right hand combo.

Then send Shadab and Baber at 4, followed by Fakhar and Iftikhar.

there is no Arshdeep in Afghan to miss the catch for the wild swing..

Asif ali is a nothing batsman, im afraid it will take a big loss from Pakistan side to drop him , that might even be Babars form and captaincy ...

Haider Ali on the other hand being wasted series after series , Babar will suffer for this soon..

Consistent chances should be given to Haider Ali, but a forced chance will be given when there is an injury may be in the final and if he doesnt perform , he will dropped for next series,, Pakistan and their rotten favoritism and seniority culture is over the moon.

What kind of Pakistani fan are you

Pakistan is over-reliant on Babar and Rizwan

One of them always plays till the 15th over atleast , soon they will get caught off guard

Early wickets of Babar and Rizwan will bring down the curtains for Pakistan against any test playing nation.

When these two go quiet , the team will be in shambles as they keep backing Ifthikar, Khusdil and Asif ali.

Asia Cup 2022 | Pakistan v Afghanistan | Match 4 | Super 4 | Dubai | 7 Sep | Pre-Match Discussion

There´s a lot of hype and excitement around this match, and it´s fully justified, given the kind of matches that we´ve had between these two teams. Considering the kind of tournament that we´ve had so far, it wouldn´t be a surprise if we end up with another tight contest. However, given then Afghanistan´s inability at closing out matches against Pakistan, I expect the latter to prevail in the end, even if by a margin of a solitary run. Afghanistan are yet to get better at handling nerves and intense pressure.

What kind of Pakistani fan are you
The kind that lives in his country...

I can support who i want man... Afghanis are not respected in cricket and if they win the asia cup there respect will only increase.

Pakistan can always focus on world t20

You can support who u want but you as a Pakistani wanting them to beat Pakistan is strange. I can understand them being a second team.

Asif is very weak vs spin. Why waste him for nothing?

He can on his day absolutely smoke medium pacers but spin is something he needs to avoid. The team management realized this last WC when they waited for Afghan spinners to finish their overs before sending him. Hayden explicitly said this was the plan.

Na man, i love the afghani team too much. Asia cup doesnt matter to pakistan. We had tp beat india and the job is done.

Afghan cricket is pure love and i would want them to wreck us through. Only way they can reach final now if they defeat us and india inshallah

Update :

Mohammad Rizwan will not be training today.

He is being monitored by the team medics and he will be available to play tomorrow's match against Afghanistan in Sharjah.

Excellent news. I do hope regardless if he is 100% or not, rest him after the Asia cup against England series.

He has been playing nonstop cricket as a wicketkeeper across all formats and eventually, that takes a toll as a wicketkeeper.

I would rather lose against India than these Afghans, who grew up in Pakistan, played cricket for the first times of their lives in Pakistan, and still hate us.

I can't forget the 2019 WC when their hooligans came in groups to attack Pakistan fans who came in families.

Bunch of ungrateful cowards. I would love to see them cry again.

"Pakistan fans" who want Afghanistan to win against Pakistan should be ashamed of themselves.

Saqlain reflects on India win with one eye on Afghanistan match

Dubai, 6 September 2022: Pakistan’s Super-4 campaign in the ACC T20 Asia Cup got off to a sweet start on Sunday when they avenged their Group A loss to India in an equally thrilling contest. The result was an outcome of intelligent and smart tactical decisions, which were translated into winning performances by the batters, who, in the process, highlighted and underscored their batting depth, power and prowess.

The strategic decision to promote left-hander Mohammad Nawaz to number four to counter India’s leg-spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravi Bishnoi, and make the most of the shorter boundary on one side of the ground, fully paid off. The five-wicket win also brought to the fore the courage and determination of the team as Mohammad Rizwan, Pakistan’s most successful batter since the start of 2021 and the tournament’s highest run-getter, braved a knee injury in the first innings to post the highest score of the match.

When Iftikhar Ahmed struck Arshdeep Singh down the ground on the penultimate ball to run two and complete the win, Pakistan recorded their highest successful T20I run-chase against India.

Recently, Pakistan’s successes have been built around the top-order excellence with Babar Azam and Rizwan scoring a heavy chunk of the team’s runs.

However, with Nawaz rising to the occasion with his blistering 42 off 20, and Khushdil Shah and Asif Ali batting intelligently, pushing the ball into gaps to pick ones and twos and dispatching balls in the slot for boundaries in the last overs, augurs well for Pakistan, considering that the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is just over five weeks away.

“The win against India has certainly lifted the morale of the team and brought to light the depth of our batting unit,” head coach Saqlain Mushtaq told PCB Digital.

“T20 cricket is all about tactful maneuvering and we have the requisite individuals to make this happen at any phase of the innings. Mohammad Nawaz is a utility player and we all knew he had what it takes to deliver in pressure situations. But it is just extraordinary how this youngster went in and took the game away from India in a matter of a few overs.”

Despite India cruising to 62 for one by the end of the PowerPlay after being asked to bat, Pakistan spinners, once again, bowled with great discipline in the middle overs that not only slowed the flow of runs but also provided crucial wickets.

Between the seventh and 14th overs, India’s run-rate dropped to eight and in the meantime, they lost KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav and Rishabh Pant, only left-hander in the middle-order. Nawaz and Shadab Khan were in operation during this phase of the innings and returned one for 25 and two for 31, respectively bowling at economy rates of 6.25 and 7.75, respectively.

“What Shadab Khan and Nawaz did for us in the middle overs was absolute gold,” continued Saqlain, adding “They put on the shackles and got us wickets regularly which had a huge impact on the total. It was because of these middle overs that we were able to restrict India to 181 for seven.

“Haris Rauf bowled with exceptional skill in the last over, denying a batter of Virat Kohli’s calibre any room and keeping him glued to his crease with immaculate yorkers.

“If you see, we now have a well-rounded bowling attack: Naseem Shah and Shahnawaz Dahani are brilliant with the new ball, our spinners are a threat to any side in the middle overs and Haris Rauf is a class act in the death. Add Shaheen Afridi to the equation and we have a bowling line-up, which will send chills down the spine of any batter in the opposition camp.”

Pakistan play Afghanistan in their next Super-4 match on Wednesday at the historic Sharjah Cricket Stadium. The two teams have faced off twice in the format with Pakistan coming out victorious both times. The record win against Hong Kong and Super-4 triumph over India have given Pakistan the desired momentum ahead of what promises to be another exciting contest, while Afghanistan, after a perfect group-stage campaign, enter the contest following a loss to Sri Lanka.

“Afghanistan are a good side and they have shown that from time to time, but we are confident to get a hat-trick of victories on Wednesday,” said Saqlain.

“The conditions in Sharjah will be suitable for spinners, but if a batter spends enough time in the middle, there will be a lot of runs on offer in the latter part of the innings with shorter boundaries.”

PCB

Babar needs to get back his form and destroy Rashid Khan. Rizwans needs to continue what he is doing and Nawaz - just do what you did last match

Overseas should be the last people on earth to even pass comments

Beware of the Afghanis

Listen mate you will be out of Pakistan on the first available opportunity too. Don’t act too smart.

Be calm and support Pakistan 🇵🇰

Knowing my beloved team, there are only two type of game results possible tomorrow, :

Scenario A) CLOSE CLOSE game where Pakistan inches through to victory after having no hope a second before... giving us all heart attacks in the process.

Scenario B) We absolutely get demolished and begin the player replacement and sorrowful threads on PP by 6th over of the 2nd innings.
