Shubman Gill returns to India's T20I squad as vice-captain

The Indian squad for the Asia Cup 2025 will be announced on Tuesday in Mumbai after a selection committee meeting at the BCCI headquarters. Following the meeting, BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar and Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav will address the media to announce the squad.

However, the press conference has been delayed a bit due to Mumbai rains. Even, Suryakumar braved the rains to reach the BCCI headquarters. While most of the team looks set, the inclusion of Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer has been the talk of the town since the past few days.

With the batting line-up all set, will Gill and Iyer find a place in the playing or they will be named as back-ups. The good news for Indian is the availability of Jasprit Bumrah who told the selectors that he will play. Bumrah, who played just three out of five Tests in England due to worload management, will be getting at least 40 days of rest before the Asia Cup 2025, which starts on September 9.

Surya Kumar Yadav (C), Shubman Gill (VC), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma (WK), Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Sanju Samson (WK), Harshit Rana, Rinku Singh

So he better prepare the boys

Drill it in. We ain’t scoring runs of these 3 if we don’t have a proper plan

On a more serious note, hate Gambhir. Who drops Shreyas Iyer and Jaiswal from T20 side?

And that Ajit Agarkar acts as if he was Malcom Marshal back in the day.

I'm huge fan of Prince gill but he don't deserve a place in current T20 team ahead of Jaiswal.

But we have too much options so we can't select all players at the same time so it's ok.

This should be playing eleven for Asia cup

@Nikhil_cric agree? Or we should Play kuldeep in place of dube but our batting depth will be gone if we play kuldeep.

:kp

@Devadwal @Mesozoic what is your opinion on the squad lads? I think Jaiswal and Iyer should have been there over Gill and Rinku Singh.

Also, why no one talks about Riyan Parag? Guy is a terrific striker. I was in attendance at Eden Gardens when he hit 5 consecutive sixers to Moeen Ali.

What about Shashank Singh? How is Dube in the squad over him?

My big worry is that gill is Vc of this team so they might play him instead Abhishek which is really unfair. I hope they will not play him

Or they may play gill in place of Tilak at 3.

Anyways i don't want gill to Play any matches.

None of Jaiswal or Gill are needed for us in T20s..they should be kept fresh for the longer formats. Both of them are way too crucial for us in Tests and playing them in T20s will only mess up their Test batting.

Iyer , Rinku , Parag, Dube, Shashank, Raghuvanshi...use these lot. We are not short of batting talent.

There should be a shadow rule that no Test batter should be selected for T20s. There is a real danger of Gill, Jaiswal, NKR, Washy etc losing out on their Test match temperament due to this.

Think they are looking at Gill for similar role Kohli played over the years in T20 side...as an achor

India is shooting themselves in the foot by going with this regressive move. Nobody cares about consolidation in T20 anymore.

Gill will be back as opener disrupting everything. He is vice captain so he is undroppable.samson will be at 3 and tilak at 5.tilak is not good at strike rotation against spin ,so he was promoted to 3.now all the shuffling to adjust one undeserving candidate.

Leaving Gill's selection and him being made VC aside....what on earth were they thinking selecting Bumrah for this low grade tournament ? Still there is so much time and so many games before the 2026 WC in which he could have been tried against much superior opponents.

Nonsense selection.

I think he will play second test against wi and skip aus limited format series. He may play sa test series and back before t20 wc.

AJIT AGARKAR ON SHREYAS IYER

"With respect to Shreyas, who can he replace? It's not his fault, but neither ours".

INDIA'S STANDBY FOR ASIA CUP:

Prasidh Krishna, Washington Sundar, Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel and Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Shreyas not even in standby player list ? 😭 😭😭😂😂😂

It is clear Gambhir doesn't like him. In reality, Shreyas Iyer is one of the best T20 batter and captain in the country ATM.

What you guys think?

We just won a T20 world cup with a consolidator in the team. These guys are useful on the right pitches. And to be fair, Shubman's T20 strike rate is decent.

The issue is when we are not able to be flexible. Selecting Shubman as a vice-captain makes him undroppable - totally the wrong approach on a flat pitch where we want all out attack.

What you guys think?
Batting is way too shallow. We cannot stop at 7.

We'll have to sacrifice one of Kuldeep or Varun for a Dube/Sundar. Between Hardik, Axar, Abhishek and Dube/Sundar, we'll have to get 8-9 overs.

If you see in the order of announcement itself, it is very evident that Samson will be dropped for Gill..Jitesh Sharma will play as the main wicket keeper playing at no 6 as finisher..Gill has come under Sachin's Quota with the help of his friend Agarkar..They had made him VC to ensure he is played against Pakistan and not getting dropped..by the next T20 WC, Sanju will be playing odis and Yashasvi jaiswal will replace him..

Gill as Vice Captain/future captain is as bad decision as rohit as test skipper at the age of 36.gill will be the official stat padder while others are doing heavy lifting

You were begging for boycott

Where is your deshbakhti 😂

In the end money matters 😂

No I wasn't begging for anything. You can point out a to a post I made where I asked for a boycott, if you have the cajones (which you clearly don't).

It's pretty clear that Pak fans like you are paranoid big time about the prospect of playing India 2/3 times , and you guys are doing a very bad job of hiding that paranoia behind these fake smileys.

It's like you are desperately trying to cope with defeat well in advance. ;)

Oh no, Bumrah is there. Very strong IND squad.

So much for Asia Cup is a meaningless tournament. Asia Cup is useless. India won't play Pakistan.
This Asia Cup is important because of recent india - Pakistan tension.

In 2018 , Prime Kohli the Indian captain rested from Asia cup yet we won the Asia Cup with ease.

And please don't even talk about Bangladesh here. They are Mediocre and always remains same.

India coach provides selection hints ahead of Asia Cup opener

India are still weighing up how many spinners to include in their XI for their Asia Cup opener against the UAE.

India bowling coach Morne Morkel has provided some insight into how his side may line-up for their opening clash against UAE at the Asia Cup.

The eight-time Asia Cup champions have been battling the hot and humid conditions in Dubai ahead of their tournament opener against the hosts on September 10 and Morkel suggested the team had yet to settle on their likely XI for the eagerly-awaited contest.

India successfully used a four-pronged spin attack during their last visit to Dubai at the ICC Champions Trophy event earlier this year, but Morkel believes conditions may require a different approach this time around.

“Again, we need to go and look at the wicket. I think when the Champions Trophy was played at that time, there was a lot of cricket on the surfaces here and they looked a little bit tired," Morkel said.

“So again, tonight we will have a first look at the surface and I believe there is quite a bit of grass covering on the square. So we will have a good idea going into the first game in terms of what is sort of a better way to go, but in terms of planning at the moment, we are covering all bases and then we will make a decision on match day."

If India do elect to play an extra pacer then left-armer Arshdeep Singh may get the chance to partner pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah with the new-ball, while fellow seamer Harshit Rana is another option alongside experienced all-rounder Hardik Pandya.

India also have a bevy of spin options at their disposal should they wish to utilise, with Varun Chakaravarthy, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav all in contention to feature against UAE if selectors opt to bolster their slow bowling options.

Kuldeep bowled well in tandem alongside Chakaravarthy during the Champions Trophy before sitting out the entire recent Test series against England and Morkel believes the talented left-armer will be ready to perform well should he earn selection.

“I think he is a very professional athlete. His attitude since England, where he received hardly any game time, he is still the guy that put the overs in," Morkel said of Kuldeep.

“And for me, Kuldeep, like I said, he has bowled a lot of overs in his career. He knows what to do to get himself ready for T20s, white-ball cricket. And like I said, we can control only what we can control now and that is when we do train now and when we have our sessions, that it is focused, that there is a purpose behind it and we have goals,"

India squad: Suryakumar Yadav (c), Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Jitesh Sharma, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakaravarthy, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Sanju Samson, Harshit Rana, Rinku Singh.
