PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari was acquitted on Saturday by an accountability court in Rawalpindi in what was the final corruption reference still pending against him.

The case against the former president was based on a reference filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) during former president Pervez Musharraf's era for allegedly acquiring assets through illegal means in Pakistan and abroad.

The request for Zardari's acquittal, submitted by his counsel and PPP leader Farooq H. Naek, was accepted by Justice Khalid Mahmood Ranjha, who ruled that the reference lacked a legal basis.

"While Imran Khan and Nawaz Sharif hide from NAB, my father Asif Ali Zardari's last pending case has just been acquitted [sic]. Faced 11+ years without a single conviction," Zardari's daughter, Bakhtawar, tweeted after the acquittal.

Zardari had previously been exempted from appearing in the case owing to security concerns.

The reference was filed before an accountability court in 2001, but was closed in 2007 under the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) issued by the government of retired Gen Pervez Musharraf.

However, the Supreme Court, in its verdict in the NRO case on December 2009, had ordered the revival of all cases closed under the ordinance. By then, however, Zardari had been sworn in as president and therefore enjoyed immunity under Article 248 of the Constitution.

Zardari has faced a total of six corruption references: apart from the assets reference, the former president was also implicated in the SGS, Cotecna, Polo Ground, Ursus Tractors and ARY Gold corruption references.

NAB re-opened these references once Zardari had completed his term office, but the former president had already been acquitted in five of the six references after a re-trial before the accountability court.

One of the very few politicians, who spent many years in jail for nothing...
He was tortured by Saif ur Rehman on NS's direction...and one time She bad Sharif had to intervene to stop a fake police encounter.

If someone really believe that Zardari did nothing and he isn't the from the list of top 2 most corrupt politicians of Pakistan than that person really need his head examined. Specially those who are sitting in the comfort of western democracy with true accountability and lecturing us.

The fight for the title of most corrupt person in Pakistan is between Nawaz and Zardari

Paid (by NS and establishment) journalists fooled pakistani public about AAZ's corruption and even gave him the label of Mr. 10% ...put him in jail for over decade, tortured him, etc...
But in the end he was the one who restored the real face of constitution (which was distorted by mush and judiciary)

Good news that all ages are cleared and he can focus on politics for some time.

I guess it really does take Imran Khan to make things happen in Pakistan.

These cases were brought by Mush and Nawaz right?

Lifafa journalists have brainwashed average Pakistanis...

They also accuse him of killing his wife, knowing that spreading rumours about a muslim is a sin.

I recall how the crowd was chanting pakistan murdabad when benazir was killed, but AAZ changed the slogans by chanting pakistan zindabad.

AAZ is a fair game in Pakistan (specially in punjab), so you can ridicule him, accuse him, put him in jail for decade, torture him etc... it's all good as he is "certified villian" in the eyes of general public.

In Punjab, no one wants to hear a good word about him.

Earlier this year, the prosecution learnt that a star witness in the corruption reference had ‘mysteriously disappeared’.
The witness in question, Barrister Jawad Mirza, was then declared a proclaimed offender by the Rawalpindi accountability court.

Mr Mirza was a legal consultant with NAB’s Financial Crime Investigation Wing (FCIW) in 2002, and presented volumes of documentary evidence to the investigation officer. The evidence includes documents related to money transactions, including details of bank accounts and offshore companies allegedly belonging to Mr Zardari and his family.

Unless the consultant testifies before the court, takes ownership of the documents and authenticates them, they will not be deemed admissible and won’t be treated as tangible evidence.

It seems that I am not the only one...
NAB cleared him in numerous cases, so it's logical to say that NAB judges also differ with general perception.

Meh. Pakistan seems to be stuck in a never ending loop, can't seem to get past these politicians who have been around for 30 years and we see the same story of corruption with everyone. It seems everyone (military, judges, politicians, journalists) can give two hoots about the poor man and just want to focus on their bitter fueds. So much time and energy is wasted on these politicians who don't know what they are doing. Only once we start seeing some fresh faces will true change in Pakistan come about, but I don't see that happening for another 10-15 years.
