Villa winger Diaby close to £50.4m Saudi switch

Aston Villa winger Moussa Diaby is poised to complete a move to Al-Ittihad for around 60m euros (£50.4m).

The 25-year-old has travelled to Saudi Arabia to have a medical and finalise the deal after just a season at Villa Park.

Diaby joined Villa from Bayer Leverkusen for a club record, reportedly £51.9m, last summer but manager Unai Emery has decided to cash in on the France international.

It comes after the club re-signed Jaden Philogene from Hull, paying around £13.5m for the English wideman this month and they feel the academy graduate can make a big impact on his return.

Diaby made 54 Villa appearances, scoring 10 goals, and helped them finish fourth in the Premier League to qualify for the Champions League.

Villa are reshaping their squad ahead of the new season and sold midfielder Douglas Luiz to Juventus for £42.35m last month.

They signed both Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea from the Italian club, while left-back Ian Maatsen arrived from Chelsea for £35m and winger Lewis Dobbin from Everton for around £9m. On Tuesday, Villa also completed the £50m signing of Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.

Villa legend Shaw in serious condition after fall

Aston Villa legend Gary Shaw is in a serious condition in hospital after falling and sustaining a head injury, reports BBC Radio WM.

The 63-year-old helped Villa win the 1981 league title and the European Cup in 1982.

Shaw, a former England Under-21 striker, also played for Blackpool, Walsall, Kilmarnock and Shrewsbury Town.

He has worked as a statistical analyst since retiring from football in 1992.

Martinez banned for 'offensive behaviour'

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez will miss Argentina's next two games after being banned by Fifa for "offensive behaviour".

The suspension relates to two incidents in 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Colombia this month.

Martinez repeated his infamous celebrations after the 2022 World Cup triumph by holding a replica Copa America trophy against his crotch following the 3-0 win over Chile on 6 September.

The match was Argentina's first since winning the Copa America in the United States in July.

On 10 September Martinez hit a camera with his gloves as a cameraman approached him on the pitch after the 2-1 defeat by Colombia.

The Argentina Football Association said it disagreed with the suspension but that Martinez was "responsible" for his actions.

He will miss the qualifiers against Venezuela and Bolivia in October.

Martinez won the Golden Glove award for best keeper at the 2022 World Cup and placed the trophy near his groin after the presentation.

Villa vs Bayern 1982 Cup final re-run in 1st game at Villa park

HI HO Aston Villa! The atmosphere is always electric at Villa park, but tonight was something else. Back where we truly belong, at the highest level! Bayern tried to rough us up all night but you need to do more to open us up, I celebrated that off-side like a mad man, though that long ball worked again and what a world class finish from Duran who has been brilliant this season so far and Martinez saved us at the end there with some high quality saves, his hamstring wasn’t an issue was it for that last one 🤣 I am tearing up, it’s nights like these that you support your team for and boy has it been a long wait.

Congrats.

What a win for Villa. I wonder if we kept Emi Martinez, if we'd have won silverware earlier under Arteta.

Full credit to Emery for pulling this off against Bayern.

Great win for the villa. Low block clearly frustrated Bayern and Kane once again in a big game goes missing.

Well done and brilliant win, good you enjoyed your night

Emery has now beaten Bayern at home with PSG, villareal and villa in CL

Full credit to Emery for pulling this off against Bayern.

It’s hard to say because he was largely inactive with Arsenal wasn’t he, either on the bench or on loan?

Somebody like Martinez and his ego need to be put in the spotlight / challenged, and I think with our club who are probably the most hated in the midlands anyway and have had to fight from underneath for so long, has suited him and his personality. He had the armband yesterday as well with McGinn sitting out due to injury for some extra motivation.

Need to take the form into the EPL games because we’ve been very very sloppy at the back so this was promising, though am not taking any credit away from your win against us.

Emery stepped into the circle of fans which once threw a cabbage at Steve Bruce during the championship days not so long ago, and now he has bought us here. He has a decent european record and hopefully there will be more nights like this.

Great win for the villa. Low block clearly frustrated Bayern and Kane once again in a big game goes missing.

Kane actually didn’t look terrible like he does for England tbh dare I say a lot more threatening, but the midfield let him down imo

Kanes movement was non existent. Kane should be every thing what Olli Watkins is off the ball, but isn't.

Bayern have some of the outstanding talent in Europe in Musiala, pavlovic , Sane, olisse. And if the focal point offers nothing, then it can be difficult. But credit to villa.

Duran 'on fire' but under Emery's 'control'

Jhon Duran has made a habit of coming off the substitutes bench and scoring for Aston Villa this season.

On Tuesday, the Colombia forward made his first start at Villa Park for 11 months and marked it with his side's second goal against Bologna in the Champions League.

Duran's celebrations were cut short when he was immediately replaced by Ollie Watkins, and he showed his displeasure by kicking the back of one of the dugout seats in frustration.

Unai Emery is not too upset with Duran's reaction, however.

Duran now has seven goals in all competitions while Watkins has five - two forwards delivering goals as Villa enjoy one of their best starts to a season for years.

"Duran got a goal again and he's on fire," former England defender Matt Upson told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"Villa have great competition for that centre-forward role, with him and Watkins capable of scoring goals."

Duran is 'really funny'

Rewind three weeks and Duran was the goal hero against Bayern Munich, coming off the bench to score the only goal of the game on a special night under the Villa Park floodlights.

His only previous start this season came in the Carbao Cup win over League One Wycombe Wanderers.

Against Bologna, Duran had five of his team's 16 attempts - including two on target, with his second beating Lukasz Skorupski from close range after an assist from the impressive Morgan Rogers.

"Duran has everything - he has technique, he can hold the ball and can flick on. He is an all-round striker," Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans told TNT Sports.

On Duran's reaction to being substituted, Tielemans added: "He is really funny. The manager does not care. He knows everyone wants to play. It is part of the game."

Villa have scored five goals in the Champions League this season with Duran, signed in an £18m deal from Chicago Fire in January 2023, netting two of them.

'Under my control'

Victory over Bologna came as Emery prepares to celebrate his second anniversary in charge of Villa.

Under the Spaniard, Villa have gone from Premier League strugglers to enjoying their best start to a Premier League season for 26 years.

Duran is clearly a big part of the club's future plans, with Emery brushing off the player's reaction when he came off, saying he had "no problem" with it.

Asked if he had any issues with Duran's reaction, Emery said: "No. I am managing everything and the reaction of players.

"We are sending a message in the dressing room: respect our values and try and be mature and be responsible. It's not only Jhon Duran, some other players react.

"But it's under my control."

Watkins or Duran - who will start next?

Who will start up front when Villa next play in the Champions League away to Club Brugge on 6 November?

"He played very well and he scored a good goal," added Emery about Duran's performance.

"It was fantastic the way he accelerated.

"We will play both strikers sometimes and when they play individually as well as today - with Watkins - it is best for the team."

Upson believes Duran has a great future at Villa.

"He didn't really get much of a sniff today but he showed that he is a goalscorer, a poacher, someone that is ready whenever the opportunity comes."

'I've never met anyone like him' - McGinn on Emery

Captain John McGinn says he has never met anyone else like manager Unai Emery and the Spaniard's place among the legendary figures in Aston Villa's history is already assured.

Villa's impressive start to the season continued with a 2-0 victory over Bologna as they went top of the Champions League table.

Emery, who celebrates two years in charge at Villa Park on Thursday, has also guided the side to fourth in this season's Premier League, four points behind leaders Liverpool.

The 52-year-old has yet to win a trophy with the club but McGinn believes his place in Villa history is safe.

"No matter what happens until now and whenever he leaves - we hope it's never - he will certainly go down as one of our club's greatest managers," McGinn said.

"You feed off your leader. He is our leader and we feed off that. No-one can question what he puts in, the effort - and everything which comes his way and our way is on the back of hard work.

"He is just so driven. I have never met anyone like him," added the 30-year-old.

McGinn acknowledged Emery has been the "only person" who has not been excited by Villa's early season form, with the ex-Arsenal boss instead concentrating on his job.

"He just focuses his full energy all the time," added the Scotland midfielder.

"He does not let us take our foot off the gas so we can use all our energy and enthusiasm, and the excitement we have. His determination and intensity is unmatched."

'Quietly taken Villa back to big time'

Villa were only three points off the relegation zone when Emery took over on 24 October 2022 following the sacking of Steven Gerrard.

Fast forward 24 months and the transformation is remarkable.

Villa are enjoying their best start to a Premier League season in 26 years as well as sweeping all before them in Europe, including a memorable win over Bayern Munich earlier this month.

Emery's win percentage of 55.79 from his 95 competitive matches in charge of Villa is the best in the club's 150-year history.

"It's amazing the way Aston Villa have started. He [Emery] is a manager that has such vast experience in these European competitions and he knows how to handle it," former England defender Matthew Upson told BBC Sport.

"Under Emery, they are only going forwards so we are all really keen to see where they end up."

Former Villa and England defender Martin Keown said on TNT Sports there has been "something special" about Emery's time in charge.

"Villa had their best league finish for 28 years last season and quietly he has taken this club back to the big time," he said.

Ex-England and Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves added: "I look at Villa now and they don't have a weakness. They have a manager who is ruthless, a winner and has a clear identity."

Top of the league table at this point is unreal, they’ve stepped up, you were right about Emery taking us through this competition

The Aston Villa Foundation hosted a No Room for Racism tournament ahead of Saturday’s Premier League fixture against AFC Bournemouth to mark the initiative

Youth Engagement Officer Ian Robinson organised the event at the club’s Inner City Academy, inviting teams from the Manchester United Foundation, LFC Foundation, Nottingham Forest Community Trust, Birmingham City Foundation and the Albion Foundation, as well as other local West Midlands clubs.

The team hosted a workshop on racism where those present could sign a pledge to stand against racism, with Caribbean food also served at the tournament which was won by the LFC Foundation.

Ian has now been working for the Aston Villa Foundation for 15 years and this Black History Month, we are celebrating his time here and the massive impact he has had on our local community.

Reflecting on his journey at the club, Ian said: “The young people who were coming to Premier League Kicks sessions before, some of them have got jobs now working with us and they know what we require from young people.

“That’s the change I’ve seen, the coaches now know what kids want and can relate to them as well.

“Our biggest achievement was one man becoming a police officer, and that just shows the impact this programme can make.”

Aston Villa is once again proud to show its strong support for No Room For Racism.

All Premier League fixtures between October 19-27 will be dedicated to the No Room For Racism initiative, highlighting the ongoing work carried out to tackle discrimination and promote diversity within football.

Over these match rounds, clubs and the Premier League are coming together to celebrate how diversity makes football stronger and reiterating their collective commitment to ensuring everyone feels welcome across all areas of the game.

Aston Villa proudly displayed its support for No Room For Racism at last weekend's Premier League fixture against Fulham at Craven Cottage, and will do so again for Saturday's home clash against AFC Bournemouth, while Aston Villa Women continue to take the knee ahead of all matches.

Matches will display No Room For Racism messaging throughout the stadium as well as online, while players will also take the knee ahead of kick-off before each fixture to show their unity against racial discrimination.

'We can win in any stadium' - Torres on Villa's confidence

Aston Villa centre-back Pau Torres says the squad feel "confident" they can "win in any stadium" this season, after starting the campaign in fine form in all competitions.

Unai Emery's side are fourth in the Premier League, having won five of their first eight games, with only one defeat. They are also unbeaten in the Champions League, sitting top of the table after seeing off Young Boys, Bayern Munich and Bologna.

"The team is working really well and always focused on each game," Torres told VillaTV, external. "It is difficult to stay fit and focus in games when you are playing three times a week, but we are doing really good work in our recovery sessions.

"We are confident we can win in any stadium and we feel comfortable at home. We are going to keep this goal in the future and hopefully it comes with the same results."

The Spain international reached 50 appearances for Aston Villa in the Champions League win over Bologna on Tuesday, and is already targeting another 50.

"It has gone very quickly," he said. "It has been just one year and a few months since I came here. I'm really happy with how it's going. I'm feeling comfortable with my team-mates as well.

"I just want to say thank you to the fans - they are always supporting the team and we can feel it on the pitch.

"Hopefully 50 more appearances are coming - then more and more [after that]."

Mings mistake biggest I ever witnessed, says Emery

It was a Champions League debut to forget for Tyrone Mings.

The Aston Villa defender, returning from 14 months out with a knee injury, was being hailed pre-match for completing a journey from Chippenham Town to the Champions League.

He ended it making unwanted headlines after conceding one of the most bizarre penalties the competition will have ever seen.

Mings’ handball, when he was penalised for picking up Martinez's goal-kick in the box, gifted Brugge a penalty, a 1-0 win, and led to Villa’s first European defeat of the campaign.

Villa manager Unai Emery was scathing of the error, calling it "the biggest mistake I witnessed in my career".

BBC Sport’s Chris Sutton described it as a "brain freeze", former Leeds forward Lucy Ward said on TNT it was a "shambles" and "farcical", while ex-England striker Peter Crouch called it a "moment of madness".

BBC

Unai going through a dreadful spell. Can Villa turn it around? They need a win and a win fast otherwise last years UCL qualification will be fast forgotten if they carry on like this on a downward spiral. He's had Money to for the 2 years he has been here.

Is he on brink of going the famous " Full Unai ". If you know you know

Villa sign forward Malen from Borussia Dortmund

Aston Villa have announced the signing of forward Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund.

The 25-year-old Netherlands international moves to the Premier League club for a reported fee of €23m (£19m) plus €3m (£2.5m) in add-ons.

Neither the fee involved nor Malen's contract duration was confirmed by Villa.

Former Arsenal youth player Malen scored 13 goals for Dortmund in the Bundesliga last season and helped the German team reach the Champions League final.

He has a similar challenge at Villa Park, with Unai Emery's side in contention to reach the latter stages of the Champions League.

Malen has nine goals in 41 senior caps for the Netherlands and played at Euro 2024.

He joins a Villa side who sat eighth in the Premier League heading into the midweek round of fixtures, four points off the Champions League qualification places.

Aston Villa have rejected a bid worth £57m from West Ham for striker Jhon Duran.

Villa do not want to sell and it is understood they value Duran upwards of £70m.

West Ham have a long-standing interest in Duran - who recently extended his contract until 2030 - and new West Ham boss Graham Potter is known to be a big admirer.

The Hammers tried to sign Duran in the summer but failed to meet Villa's valuation.

The 21-year-old has scored seven Premier League goals in 19 appearances this season, with Ollie Watkins used as Unai Emery's preferred forward.

He moved to Villa Park from MLS side Chicago Fire in January 2023 but just seven of his 54 league appearances have come as a starter.

Aston Villa missed the chance to all but secure their place in the Champions League knockouts as they were beaten by Monaco at Stade Louis II.

Wilfried Singo got the game's only goal in the eighth minute, heading home from close range after Emiliano Martinez had initially done well to keep out Thilo Kehrer's effort.

Villa were not at their best, but did have chances to equalise, with Monaco goalkeeper Radoslaw Majecki twice denying the visitors before half-time.

First, Leon Bailey forced him into a decent stop after good work by Emiliano Buendia, who also teed up Ollie Watkins for an effort straight at Majecki.

Monaco also had a goal ruled out early in the second half when Maghnes Akliouche was flagged offside, but the hosts continued to look the most likely to score again, twice getting in behind the Villa defence only for last-ditch blocks to prevent them scoring.

The defeat means Unai Emery's side will likely need to beat Celtic at Villa Park next Wednesday to seal a top-eight place in the league phase of the competition.

Meanwhile, the win boosted Monaco's own automatic qualification hopes as they moved alongside Villa on 13 points.

BBC

Emery fears Aston Villa have blown Champions League top-eight chances

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery says his side may have squandered their chances of finishing in the top eight of the Champions League following their loss at Monaco.

Wilfried Singo headed home the game's only goal on Tuesday night as a below-par Villa were unable to convert their opportunities.

Finishing eighth or above in the league phase of the competition ensures direct qualification for the knockout stage and a win for Villa in Monaco would have meant they had one foot in the next stage.

However, the loss means they will likely need to beat Celtic at Villa Park next week to avoid having to go into a two-legged knockout phase play-off.

"When we are playing games like this, it's important to get three points because I think we lost the opportunity to get in the top eight," Emery said.

"Today was the key."

Emery's Watkins and Duran 'challenge' continues

Despite this loss, Aston Villa have been in good form lately, winning seven of their last 12 games in all competitions.

As well as competing in Europe, Villa are also battling for a top-four finish in the Premier League and key to their performances at home and abroad are strikers Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran.

Watkins has scored 10 goals in all competitions so far this term while Duran has 12 but Emery has mostly opted to rotate the two, having been unable to get them to play effectively as a partnership.

Watkins started against Monaco with Duran joining him in attack in the 57th minute but neither were able to really threaten the hosts before full time.

"The last 20 minutes we played with two strikers and with two strikers we are not being organised with the positioning like I want," Emery said.

"We have two good strikers. Playing with two strikers is my challenge. Both are very good players but today it didn't work well.

"I made a mistake when I decided to play with two strikers. Until that moment we were more or less controlling the game."

Carlos leaves Villa to join Fenerbahce

Turkish side Fenerbahce have signed centre-back Diego Carlos from Aston Villa for an undisclosed fee.

The Brazilian, who joined Villa from Sevilla in 2022, has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal.

The Turkish club are reportedly paying 10m euros (£8.45m), external for the 31-year-old.

Villa said they would "like to wish Diego good luck in his new professional chapter".

Carlos made 58 appearances for Villa and scored one goal. He has not been involved in the club's past five games.

Fenerbahce - managed by Jose Mourinho - are second in the Turkish Super Lig, six points behind leaders Galatasaray.

'Maybe we have to sell some players' - will Watkins or Duran leave Villa?

Aston Villa have decisions to make before Monday's transfer deadline with strikers Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran wanted men.

Manager Unai Emery has said Villa will be "demanding" with Arsenal after their approach for the England forward was rejected while Duran is reportedly poised for a medical with Saudi side Al-Nassr.

Watkins scored and missed a penalty in Wednesday's 4-2 Champions League win over Celtic, shrugging off the intense pre-game speculation.

Afterwards, Emery said: "I don't want [to sell]. It is good news to have offers from other clubs. We want to keep our sporting objective through the players we have in the squad.

"Every player can be in the market if it is good for the player and the club. To get this deal we are going to be demanding. Watkins is our striker."

He was less than certain with Duran, who has been linked with a move from Villa Park since the summer.

"If he is leaving it's because he wants [to]. I told you last week I wanted him here. After West Ham match I told you I want him here," said Emery.

"We are different people, different objectives.

"The club is working and we have to be intelligent in the market. Our objective here is to keep our structure because we want to keep the level high, and maybe we have to sell some players - and I don't know exactly - until everything is done whether or not Jhon Duran is leaving - but if he does, it'll be good news for us because it's good money.

"I don't know if Duran will leave or not. I want to keep him here, but we have to respect it. It's good news to have offers from other clubs - but we want to keep our best players."

Former Blackburn and Celtic striker Chris Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live: "Holding on to Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran is key for Villa. If one of them goes... I know people say that they can't play together or they haven't played well together but they have dove-tailed pretty well in terms of when one comes on for another in games.

"Unai Emery will want to go as far as possible in this competition and in the Premier League, and for Aston Villa to continue building as a club, I don't think he will want either to go.

"What I think is interesting is that Ollie Watkins is an Arsenal fan as well. I think that may just sway it."

Aston Villa sign PSG midfielder Asensio on loan

Aston Villa have signed Spain midfielder Marco Asensio on loan from Paris St-Germain until the end of the season.

The three-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid is Villa's fourth signing of the winter transfer window after Marcus Rashford, Donyell Malen and Andres Garcia.

Villa will reportedly cover the 29-year-old's wages but do not have an option to make the move permanent.

Asensio has scored seven goals in 47 appearances for PSG since joining from Real Madrid in the summer of 2023.

He helped the club win the French title last season, but this term he has made just eight league starts.

He was also part of the Spain squad that won the Nations League in 2023.

Villa boss Unai Emery said his side needed new players following Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Wolves, which left the club eighth in the Premier League.

They sold Colombia striker Jhon Duran to Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr in a £71m deal and centre-back Diego Carlos to Fenerbahce for around £8.45m.

Earlier on Monday they loaned 21-year-old winger Samuel Iling-Junior to Middlesbrough for the rest of the season.

Villa completed the loan signing of Manchester United forward Rashford, 27 - which includes an option to buy for £40m - on Sunday.

Netherlands forward Malen, 26, joined Villa for £19m from Borussia Dortmund three weeks ago, while Spanish full-back Garcia, 21, joined from Levante for a reported fee of £6m with a further £1m in add-ons.

Asensio could make his Villa debut alongside Rashford against Tottenham in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday (17:35 GMT) - a match that is live on BBC One and iPlayer.

Villa are also in the last 16 of the Champions League.

They've been quite active in the window

Not sure how many were planned signings or opportunistic ones as they seem a bit haphazard

@shaz619

Villa in the knockout stages of the Champions League! Former winners of the European cup and although Brugge are a decent side, a great draw .

Brugge have some skilled attackers but Villa can take this back to Villa Park with a draw or win, next round is there for the taking!

Its great the match is at 5.45pm, I can watch it all!

Ah 5.45 is perfect timing for us, I was hosting some folk for ifthar but got to see the first half and final 1/4 at least, football in Ramadan is the best. Your prediction in the other thread was spot on, having said that it can’t have been an easy task when they previously lost to them in November

@shaz619 must be happy with villa winning 3-1 in brugge?

Absolutely, it wasn’t a sure thing after losing to them last year, I would have been happy with a draw and taken this back to Villa Park, will be very disappointed if we don’t qualify for the QF.

But still, plenty off egg on 🤡🤡 face.

CL quarter final
Decent league position

You must be happy

Delighted mate, especially with the way Unai has handled the squad during the late stages of the season; reinforced by our win against Brighton with all three players we got during the TF window scoring goals, I hope we can sign Rashford, he’s very much at home with our club.

Great for us to get the 3 points from a difficult fixture.

After the tame results today for City & Chelsea, we actually got a fighting chance for the top 4!!
