He had gone into seclusion for a long time it seems. To be honest I thought he had already passed away.

Think he has already passed away and they are waiting for the official formalities to get over.

In a morbid way, his death will have some benefit in terms of sympathy for BJP, although Modi is nothing like Vajpayee.
 
Vajpayee's biggest feat was holding together that patchy coalition government for a full 5 years 1999 - 2004. By the end of it, we never went back to the dark days of the mid to late 90s again where there was a new Prime Minister every two weeks. #Britain
 
Rip Atal ji it's final release by AIIMS. He was my first memory of what prime minister is. Great person and leader. Will be always missed.

NEW DELHI: Atal Bihari Vajpayee, three-time Prime Minister of India and one of the country's most respected politicians, has died. The announcement was made by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences or AIIMS, where the 93-year-old was being treated for nine weeks.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the hospital twice in 24 hours and top politicians from across parties arrived as the former prime minister's health worsened on Wednesday.

Mr Vajpayee, the BJP's tallest leader, was admitted to hospital on June 11 with a kidney tract infection and chest congestion.

Since 2009, the veteran politician had largely been confined to his home on Krishna Menon Marg in the heart of Delhi, away from public life due to his failing health.

Mr Vajpayee was considered the gold standard of leadership in the BJP and had admirers even among rival parties. His birthday -- December 25 -- is celebrated as Good Governance Day.

Since morning, BJP chief Amit Shah and Union ministers Rajnath Singh, JP Nadda and Venkaiah Naidu and several other leaders had been visiting the hospital.

At the BJP headquarters in Delhi, decorations put up for Independence Day celebrations on Wednesday were taken down as a somber note took over.

LK Advani, one of Mr Vajpayee's closest colleagues and his deputy in the NDA government from 1998 to 2004, was among the visitors.

Wait India had new prime minister every two weeks in the 90s? Coincidently we had Nawaz and Benazir playing musical chairs on our side of the fence as well.
 
Was probably the first memory of an Indian PM for many posters here. Love watching some of his classic Lok Sabha speeches even today. Rest in peace.

I remember his name being often discussed back in the 2002. I dont know anything about him, but still i feel sad that i knew his name and he died.
 
Under him we had a lot of trade, cultural and sporting ties between India-Pakistan, that 2004 Indo-Pak series was a great moment not just for cricket but also humanity. He asked the cricketers to not just win the matches but also win hearts, he was a man of peace. He was genuinely interested to solve the Kashmir issue. He took everyone along and was a compassionate person, the only BJP leader I like. In his younger days he made some anti Tamil comments but he changed as a person as he grew old.
 
In spite of Kargil, Kandahar hijacking, Parliament attack and massacres of Kashmiri Hindus, he never lost hope in bringing friendship between the 2 countries. His ability to look at the larger picture is something no current Indian leader has. I am sure that if he were elected for another term Indo-Pak relations would have been very good and Kashmiris would have seen better days.

This man instigated a crowd of terrorists to destroy the Babri Masjid in 1992. Before that he stoked a bloody pogrom in Nellie in 1983 where over 2000 Muslims were killed.

I guess people tend to forget the bad and only remember the good when person died.

Indeed. Here's a prescient poem recited by the towering statesman himself. The first few seconds are sanskrit heavy hindi but he does transition into more accessible vernacular notes later.

I remember him gloating when Afghanistan was attacked giving the impression that it was a matter of time before the American's would wipe Pakistan of the map. He was the Indian PM offering the American's military bases to attack Pakistan after 9/11 when Pak relations with them were supposedly peaceful. This is what I will remember him for. That's all I am gonna say.
 
Although never liked him for his moderate stand on many things, my favourite moment is the nuclear tests conducted under his watch, where he defied america and instilled pride among indians..gave us our very own yaum-e-takbir, the beginning of naya hindostan.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan offered his condolences over the demise of Former Indian prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Vajpayee passed away on Thursday in New Delhi at the age of 93. He first became PM of India for only 16 days — May 16-31, 1996.

He was reelected for prime minister-ship in March 1998, where he remained in the office until May 13, 2004.

The former Indian premier was born in 1924 in Gwalior and was among the founding members of the Bhartiya Janata Party.

Imran said that Vajpayee's efforts for peace between Pakistan and India will always be remembered, adding that the deceased was a huge political figure in South Asia.

The PTI chief said that as prime minister Vajpayee took the responsibility to enhance relations between Pakistan and India.

'There is a void in the politics of South Asia after his death. There can be political differences but the desire of peace remains present across the border," the PTI leader said. "We stand with India in this difficult time."

Mine were, described him as one of India's great leaders but it seems to have been deleted along with whichever other ones were. Oh well, I won't be bothering to repeat them so never mind.

Obviously I was being facetious, but this is what it was:

Narasimha Rao (Congress, 1991 - 1996)
Vajpayee (BJP, 1996)
Deve Gowda (JDU, 1996 - 1997)
Gujral (JDU, 1997 - 1998)
Vajpayee (BJP, 1999 - 2004)
 
He wasn't perfect but he was one of India's best PMs imo who steered the nation through some difficult times. And he did it with such character and integrity. Sure he made some questionable statements in his early political career and prior to becoming PM however post 1996 he was always very statesmanlike and treated all Indians the same. It's a shame his health suffered so much post 2004 as I'm sure he still had so much to give.

Former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee once gifted a special bat to the Indian cricket team ahead of the historic 2004 Pakistan tour with a beautiful message crafted on it.

Former Indian Prime Minister Atal Vihari Vajpayee passed away on early Thursday evening (August 16) at the age of 93. He breathed his last at the AIIMS hospital at 5:05 PM after the veteran politician was put on life support system. Vajpayee was not just India’s tallest leaders, but also an ardent lover of sports. And so he had crafted a small message for the Indian cricket team ahead of their historic Pakistan tour in 2004.

When the Sourav Ganguly-led Indian team had visited Vajpayee ahead of the Pakistan tour, the then Prime Minister had gifted them a special bat with a message of peace inscribed on it. "Khel hi nahi, dil bhi jeetiye - shubhkamnaye" (Win not only the game, but hearts also - best wishes).

Vajpayee had always been in support of peace between India and Pakistan and the cricket tour was a step to mend the relationship between the two countries. In fact, India had got a special visa for the tour.

The tour, which was in itself a first of its kind in 15 long years, comprised five one-day matches and three Tests and Ganguly's side won the ODI series 3-2, before winning the Tests by a margin of 2-1.The 93-year-old political veteran was admitted to the hospital on June 11 with a kidney tract infection, urinary traction, low urine output and chest congestion.

Over the last few days, the conditions had deteriorated urging him to be put in life support system.In a statement, the AIIMS said: "It is with profound grief that we inform about the sad demise of former Prime Minister of India Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee at 5.05 pm." Vajpayee was admitted to AIIMS on August 11 and was "stable in the last 9 weeks under the care of a team of AIIMS doctors.

Unfortunately, his condition deteriorated over the last 36 hours and he was put on life support system. Despite the best of efforts, we have lost him today. We join the nation in deeply mourning this great loss".

New Delhi: In a massive gesture by Pakistan, a delegation from Islamabad will attend the funeral of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Friday evening. Vajpayee, 93, breathed his last at 5:05 pm on Thursday after a prolonged illness. Pakistan's acting Law and Information Minister Barrister Ali Zafar will lead his country's delegation, which will travel to Delhi for the sombre ceremony.The last rites of India’s beloved leader late Atal Bihari Vajpayee will be performed at the Rashtriya Smriti Sthal at 4 pm on Friday 17 August. The mortal remains of the BJP stalwart were first taken from the AIIMS hospital to his residence on the Krishna Menon Marg in the national capital last night. This morning, amid chants of 'Atal Bihari Amar Rahe', they were shifted to the BJP headquarters on Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Marg.

Besides Pakistan, India's other neighbouring countries such as Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka are also sending their special representatives to attend Vajpayee’s funeral.

On Thursday, the Pakistan government and top leaders condoled the death of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, remembering the ex-PM’s contribution to bringing "a change" in the ties between Islamabad and New Delhi.Imran Khan, the incoming Prime Minister of Pakistan, said Vajpayee’s death has left a void in the politics of South Asia. "There can be political differences but the desire of peace remains present across the border. We stand with India in this difficult time," Khan stated.Meanwhile, Pakistan Foreign Office spokesman Mohammad Faisal described Vajpayee as a renowned statesman “who contributed to bringing a change in India-Pakistan relations and remained a key supporter of SAARC and regional cooperation for development.”

Unprecedented maybe in North India. In Madras when ex Chief Minister Annadurai died over 15 million people attended his funeral which is still a world record. I am talking about the 60s when Tamil Nadu's population must have been less than 40 million, so almost half the state turned up to say goodbye to the Dravidian icon. In general funerals of leaders draw much greater crowds in South India.
 
NEW DELHI: Pakistan's choice of delegates for former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's funeral in Delhi last week has raised eyebrows in India. Among the five delegates was Danyal Gilani, the half-brother of David Coleman Headley - the Pakistani-American terrorist jailed in the US over his role in the 26/11 Mumbai terror strike.

David Headley - who recced various Indian cities before the 26/11 attacks - was arrested in 2009. He had testified before a court in Mumbai through video conferencing from his prison in the US during the trial of Mumbai attacks mastermind Abu Jundal. Policy observers are surprised at the choice of Danyal Gilani, who is posted as the Chairman of Central Film Censor Board. "The delegation attended the funeral and was to meet the external affairs minister also. It would have been very embarrassing for the government to explain," a senior official said. Others argue that if he has not been declared persona non grata by India, he cannot be stopped from visiting if he is part of a Pakistani delegation.

Government sources said Danyal Gilani, a career bureaucrat in Pakistan, has publicly dissociated himself from David Headley. Sources said he has so far not been found to have any terror links and is not on any Indian blacklist.

"Danyal Gilani was issued visa after checking the blacklist. He does not figure in our blacklist. There are no reports of his links to terrorism," a senior government official told NDTV.

Danyal Gilani, however, did go to funeral venue but did not attend the courtesy meeting of Pakistan's caretaker law minister Syed Ali Zaffar with foreign minister Sushma Swaraj. Pakistan High Commissioner Sohail Mehmood, law minister Syed Ali Zaffar, foreign ministry spokesperson and Director General of South Asia Mehmood Faizal had met Ms Swaraj, the officials said.

A controversy had shadowed the visit of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in February when a convicted pro-Khalistan terrorist, Jaspal Atwal, was found present at an official event hosted for the Canadian Prime Minister. The government had to inquire into how a separatist leader was allowed back into the country without any red-flags being raised.

India has repeatedly called out Pakistan over its military establishment's support to terrorists acting from its soil. Pakistan's new president, cricketer-turned politician Imran Khan, has however, said that wanted peace with India and was ready "take two steps if India took one".

In the recently held elections, Mr Khan's party has won with a wafer thin majority. His rivals have maintained the election was rigged and he won only with the backing of the military establishment.
