Soon after billionaire investor George Soros said that Indian business tycoon Gautam Adani's recent troubles in the stock market would spur 'democratic revival in India' and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will 'have to answer questions', Union Minister Smriti Irani called upon Indians to unitedly respond to 'foreign powers who try to intervene in India's democratic processes'.
Calling Mr Soros's remark a 'declaration to destroy India's democratic processes', she said Indians have defeated such 'foreign powers' who tried to meddle with our internal affairs earlier as well, and will do so again. "I urge every Indian to give a fitting reply to George Soros," she said.

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, referring to Mr Soros's remark, said it had 'nothing to do with George Soros', and whether the Adani controversy would 'spark a democratic revival' depended on Congress, Opposition parties, and India's electoral process.

"Whether the PM-linked Adani scam sparks a democratic revival in India depends entirely on the Congress, Opposition parties & our electoral process. It has NOTHING to do with George Soros. Our Nehruvian legacy ensures people like Soros cannot determine our electoral outcomes," he tweeted.

Launching a scathing attack on the billionaire, the Union Minister said he is a designated 'economic war criminal' who has declared his ill-intention towards India.

"The man who broke the Bank of England, and is designated by the nation an economic war criminal, has now pronounced his desire to break Indian democracy. George Soros, an international entrepreneur, has declared his ill-intention to intervene in democratic processes of India," the fiery BJP leader said.

She alleged that such powers try to bring down governments in other countries to ensure 'their hand-picked people' are in power.

"It is evident from his statements that he has pronounced funding over one billion dollars particularly to target leaders like PM Modi is significant," she said, referring to the billionaire investor known for breaking the Bank of England in 1992.

"PM Modi has repeatedly said that he can take criticism, but an attempt on India will not be tolerated," Smriti Irani further said, adding that this is a 'war' and PM modi is the only one who stands between the foreign powers and the citizen.

The turmoil engulfing Gautam Adani’s business empire that’s sparked a punishing stock market selloff and shaken faith in India as an investment opportunity may open the door to a democratic revival in the country, according to billionaire investor George Soros.

The fallout from US short seller Hindenburg Research’s attack on the conglomerate threatens to hurt investor confidence in India, has fueled concerns about the country’s regulatory framework and sparked questions about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ties with Adani.

“Modi is silent on the subject, but he will have to answer questions from foreign investors and in parliament,” Soros said in a speech ahead of the Munich Security Conference. “This will significantly weaken Modi’s stranglehold on India’s federal government and open the door to push for much-needed institutional reforms. I may be naive, but I expect a democratic revival in India.”

Soros, who has a net worth of about $.8.5 billion, is the founder of the Open Society Foundations, which gives grants to groups and individuals that promote democracy, transparency and freedom of speech.

“It is ironical that those who practice politics through boardrooms and by manipulating the public are sermonizing about those who regularly seek and receive the mandate of the people,” Arindam Bagchi, spokesman for India’s Foreign Ministry, said in an emailed statement. “India’s democracy does not need certificates from outside.”

The damning short-seller report in late January accusing the Adani Group of accounting fraud and stock manipulation sparked a stock rout that’s wiped out more than $120 billion of the empire’s market value and saw the man who was once the world’s second-wealthiest tumble down the rankings of the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

The crisis has also put the spotlight on Modi’s relationship with Adani. India’s opposition has been drawing attention to the pair’s close ties and to the business tycoon’s meteoric growth that mirrors Modi’s political journey to the top elected office. Modi has not directly addressed the issue.

The latest focus in the Adani saga is on the empire’s debt. After a borrowing blitz in recent years, a spike in yields and questions about access to overseas financing following the short-seller report has prompted warnings that the group’s more highly-leveraged companies having little capacity to absorb higher interest rates.

Do you really think regime changes happen in that way in India? BJP is just reacting too much sour which they can very well ignore and let the noise die down. They have created their own issues by first banning the BBc documentary and then using state power to intimidate. The more they do these things, the more people will want to know more. BBC documentary have not shown anything that Indian public is not aware off, they still voted for Modi because they have already weighed their options. But by over reacting they are actually creating a buzz and drawing attention when there need not be any. It's a classic mistake .

A day after Union Minister Smriti Irani blasted billionaire investor Geroge Soros for his remarks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, her colleague, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, has also hit out at the 92-year-old, calling him "old, rich, opinionated, and dangerous", and someone who "still thinks that his views should determine how the entire world works."

Addressing a session with Australian Minister Chris Brown at the Raisina@Sydney Dialogue, Mr Jaishankar said, "Mr Soros is an old, rich opinionated person sitting in New York who still thinks that his views should determine how the entire world works...such people actually invest resources in shaping narratives."

Mr Jaishnkar said 'people like him' think an election is good if the person they want to see, wins, and if the election throws up a different outcome, then they will say it is a flawed democracy.

"And the beauty is that all this is done under the pretence of advocacy of open society," the External Affairs Minister said.

The Hungarian-American businessman, who established the Open Society Foundations to 'promote democratic governance', had said PM Modi "is no democrat", alleging that "inciting violence against Muslims was an important factor in his meteoric rise".

Singling out Mr Soros on a broader question regarding 'casual comments' on undermining of democracy in India, S Jaishankar said he (Mr Soros) "actually thinks that it doesn't matter that this is a country of 1.4 billion people -- we are almost that -- whose voters decide how the country should run."

"It worries us. We are a country that went through colonialism, we know the dangers of what happens when there's outside interference," he added.

On Mr Soros's remark that PM Modi was not a democrat, the foreign minister pointed to his earlier comments on alleged threat to Muslims' citizenship in India, calling it "ridiculous".

"Mr Soros said India is a democratic country, but he doesn't think the Prime Minister of India is a democrat. He earlier accused us of planning to strip millions of Muslims of their citizenship which of course didn't happen, it was a ridiculous suggestion," the minister said in Sydney.

"If you do this kind of scaremongering...millions of people will be deprived of citizenship. It actually does real damage to the societal fabric because somebody out there believes you. You create that kind of fear psychosis," he added.

He also termed Mr Soros's comments "typical of a Euro Atlantic view".

He said there was "a debate and conversation that we must have on democracy", including whose values defined a democracy as the world rebalanced and became less Euro Atlantic.
