Australia (168/8) remain in the hunt for a SF spot after a narrow 4-run win vs Afghanistan (164/7)

ICC T20 World Cup 2022 | Australia v Afghanistan | Group 1 | Adelaide | 04 Nov | Match Discussion

Australia have "Left out" Starc today - someone who has been their main strike bowler the recent years, one of the best strike bowlers in the world right now, and an absolute gun performer in ICC tournaments - in a match which they needed to win by a huge net run-rate! How crazy is that? I'm baffled, absolutely dumbfounded, by this rather suspicious decision. Surely, something doesn't seem right there - as is being speculated even by their own former cricketers. Absolutely beyond me!

If Afghanistan get to 119 it will be very hard for Australia to qualify by any means.

Yes, but England will have to defeat SL. There have been some surprises in this WC so far. But England might have had their bad game out of the way already.

Dhoni183, why do your posts always include the heading?

Well, forget 106 or 119 or whatever, Afghanistan eyeing for a win here.

Would be massive if Afghan can win it beating Australia in Australia

Why this always happens? Liton ,now Naib. Afg was going so well and that lucky throwing.

Afghanistan running out of steam now but they have done reasonably well in this game. England just need them to get another 20-25 runs for the favour to be completed. :P

Najib was their best batter in last few years. What kind of shot he played. Taking on the longest boundary lol

Little teams plays like this. Get you pumped up and then deflates

Afghanistan have pressed the self destruct button, they are like Pakistan at times.. masters at loosing from good positions

Now Australia can't go past England on the net run rate.
England vs Srilanka is a knock out for England.

tear show about to start
theyre just getting the taste and now gonna lose

What a fight from Afghanistan. Missed a massive opportunity though

Come on Rashid, bring up your 50 in 23 balls

Australia really don't deserve to go through. Have been poor so far.

AUS 168/8 (20)
AFG 164/7 (20) CRR: 8.2
Australia won by 4 runs

Well done Afghanistan! Great performance and should have won really.

Poor from Australia once again.

SL out of WC even with a win against England.

Australia not looking very strong contender in this tournament. India should hope they face Australia instead of England in semis.

Missed a humdinger. Saw only last 10 balls. Still it was exciting. As per Maxwell under lights ball was nicely coming on. So going forward and fielding first will be better option

Rashid khan's finishing skills are great. But he rarely does it. This year IPL he won a lot of games singlehandedly. He scored 28 runs from Marco Jansen in 20th over to win a match for his side. I thought he would do against Stoinis.

So many were predicting Australia will be the team to beat lol I always maintained their T20 is an average team. A predictable bowling side.

didn't expect us to just need a win against Sri Lanka when the Crims only had Ireland and Afghanistan to play

Seems like on a given day in Australia anybody can beat anybody. Even NZ match would have gotten closer with a bit of luck. Balbirni insided edged a very slow wide ball

Can't rule out Srilanka win tomorrow. Hasranga and Teekshna can blow away England on Sydney track.

England are more deserving tbh because rain costed them the game against Ireland, they were capable enough to chase down the total in those final overs as required run rate was still achievable.

Australia probably didn't looked like a champion team from the first game as they have been in ODI tournaments.

Rashid Khan's late cameo helped Afghanistan in getting close to the target in their final Super 12 encounter of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup against Australia in Adelaide but they still fell short by four runs, bringing an end to their campaign.

Glenn Maxwell's fifty lifts Australia

Afghanistan captain Mohammad Nabi won the toss and asked Australia to bat first. The hosts didn't get off to the kind of start they would have liked as they lost both of their openers Cameron Green and David Warner with just 48 runs on the board. Green opened the innings in absence of regular captain Aaron Finch, who was ruled out with a hamstring injury. Steve Smith, who replaced Tim David in this match, also departed soon, leaving Australia reeling at 52/3.

Mitchell Marsh took over the reigns after that with an excellent knock of 45 from 30 deliveries. Marcus Stoinis also added valuable 25 runs from 21 deliveries. But the real difference was made by Glenn Maxwell, who smashed an unbeaten 54 from 32 deliveries. Australia kept losing wickets at regular intervals but Maxwell stuck around and lifted them to a competitive total of 168/8.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz entertains with his cameo

The Afghanistan wicketkeeper-batter showed his talent and potential once again as he took on the Australian pacers today to play a breathtaking cameo of 30 from 17 deliveries at the top of the order. Gurbaz smashed two fours and as many sixes during his knock, and he was finally dismissed while attempting a big shot off Kane Richardson.

Afghanistan falter but Rashid Khan takes them close

Rashid Khan is mostly famous for his wrist-spin but he has always been a handy batter. He showed his batting talent once again today as he smashed 48 from just 23 deliveries to take Afghanistan close to the target. His knock consisted of three fours and four huge sixes, and gave the Afghan fans something to cheer for.

Australia win but semi-final berth still doubtful

Australia needed to win by a big margin in order to stay in a safe position in the semi-final race. This win has given them valuable two points but it hasn't improved their NRR much. Their NRR now is -0.173, lower than England's +0.547.

If England win their next match against Sri Lanka, Australia will get eliminated from this World cup.

ICC T20 World Cup 2022 | Australia v Afghanistan | Group 1 | Adelaide | 04 Nov | Match Discussion

This match was a complete reminiscent of the India-Bangladesh match: like KL Rahul, Maxwell first played a punishing innings and then completely turned the game on its head, like KL Rahul, with a stunning direct hit from the boundary to effect a run-out. Like Bangladesh, Afghanistan looked good to be going for the target, but then lost their way with a cluster of wickets to have then left themselves with too much to do in the end. Like Bangladesh, their lower-order staged a brilliant comeback to have got so close to the total to leave you with that "If only" feeling for the hours to come. Whereas Bangladesh lost their match by five runs, Afghanistan lost theirs by four. The resemblance between the two matches is amazing to say the least! The problem with these weaker teams, though, is that the moment they sense that they're in with a serious chance to effect an upset, they get over-ambitious with their shot-selection, lose sight of the job at hand, and goof up the whole game. It keeps happening again and again and will keep happening even in the future.

Yesterday, I asked my friend on the phone as to why, the moment a weaker seems to bossing the game on the back of an innings by one of their batsmen, and look in with a serious chance to win the game, that very batsman gets run-out at that very stage. We both hadn't yet come up with an answer and it happened again today with Afghanistan. :))

Well caught! I'm impressed! :)

Well, the inclusion of the thread title helps me find me own posts in the future, if I ever need to search for them.

They didn't look last time either after Buttler butchered their bowlers. Then the miracle happened. 6 toss wins in a row.

AFG, IRE, WI, Bdesh, SL, ZIM, NED and SCO should all be allowed a direct entry to T20 future world cups.

There should be qualifiers only for nations like SGP, HK, UAE, Oman, US, MAS, NEP, PNG, NAM, UG, eg..

With Shimron Hetmyer WI in the mix would have given a few more scares. Those guys on wickets like Adelaide can brutalize any side. Short side boundaries. Too bad he missed out. They could have pulled of a few wins as well.

Thank God Afghanistan were not in our group! Already there are conspiracies surrounding Ind vs Pak, Ind vs Ban matches, we didn't want another quarrel involving Afg vs Pak...

Agree, rain has kept Australia in the World Cup. England missed out on the Ireland plus they most probably would have beaten Australia too.

Very idea of T20 was to close the gap between top sides and lower ranked sides. This is the first time ever since T20 inception i see. Literally anybody can win. Also the league cricket has somewhat closed the gap. Still room for improvement. Associate sides still somehow manage to collapse against run of play. Also fielding standard was extremely poor. Worst 2 are zimbabwe and Ireland. Third word India as per fielding efficiency list. 73%.

I don't get one thing. If SRL Vs Eng match washed out then all of NZ,Aus a d Eng will have 5 points. Eng has better run rate than Aussie ,so Eng should go. But Australia beat England,so Aus should go?? Which is correct?

Afg vs pak would have been a cracker. They are almost there to win against big teams now

Not yet. They meakly surrendered to Srilanka , England. They would have been beaten by NZ too had there been any play. They couldn't move to the next round in any word cup so far they played. A long long way to go.

Oh ,I forgot Aus Vs Eng was washed out. So if England gets a point and equal Australia, England is through as they possess a better run rate.

Lol look at the point table. If Eng vs SL match is a washout then Australia go to semi.. England only have 5 point, Aus have 7..

Mohammad Nabi resigns as captain following heart-breaking loss to Australia

Mohammad Nabi announced his decision to resign as Afghanistan's captain following the loss to Australia in the T20 World Cup.

Afghanistan skipper Mohammad Nabi announced his decision to resign as the captain of the national team following their four-run loss to Australia in Adelaide in the Super 12 fixture of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2022.

"Our T20 World Cup journey came to an end, with a result that not we nor our supporters were expecting. We are as frustrated as you are with the outcome of matches," Nabi said in his tweet.

Nabi captained the team in 35 T20Is - first leading them in 2013 - with Afghanistan winning 16 of those matches. The skipper explained in his tweet that the "selection committee and I were not on the same page which had implications on the team balance".

He, however, clarified that he would continue as a player and will be available "when the management and team needs" him. The veteran Afghanistan all-rounder led the team to the Super 12 stage of the ongoing T20 World Cup, where rain hampered Afghanistan's chances against New Zealand and Ireland.

They ended the Super 12 stage with no wins in three completed games, almost pulling off a heist against Australia on Friday, eventually losing by just four runs after a spectacular cameo from Rashid Khan.

Poor guy can't blame himself. Achieving consistency in chasing succesfully requires discipline, methods
You cannot blindly throw the bat around against all bowlers. You have to pick the right bowlers, right time, right length. Associate sides always falter when they chase.

Against top sides. As you can see top dogs have better chasing record with an exception of NZ. They find a way to win from hopeless situation. Associated find a way to lose from winning situation.

Correction
If SL beat England, Australia goes through

During the fourth over of the game, Australia batters Mitchell Marsh and David Warner combined to face just five balls in the over. Either batters scored a single of the first two balls before Marsh cracked the half-volley on the third ball over backward point for a boundary. Marsh then sneaked three runs on the next ball owing to some sloppy fielding from Afghanistan leading to an overthrow. The fifth delivery was a dot ball. There was no sixth ball bowled in that over.

Mitchell Starc was left out in favour of Kane Richardson for Australia's Super 12 clash on Friday against Afghanistan in Adelaide.
Starc took the new ball in just one match in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2022 and was used as a change-up pacer in the tournament in a rather surprising move. On Friday, Australia went a step further and sat the veteran left-arm quick out to play Richardson.

Explaining the decision as a "tactical" one, assistant coach Daniel Vettori detailed that they hoped to extract the best of Richardson in the back end of the innings in particular.

"We brought in Kane to play the role he executed tonight at the back-end of the powerplay, looking at the death overs where Kane has been exceptional in the past," Vettori said after the match.

"It was more around the effectiveness of Hazlewood and Cummins at the top and their ability to take the new ball and be wicket-takers," Vettori said after the match.

"That pushed Starcy into a different role, and he obviously came up against Kane Richardson. It was thought among the hierarchy that Kane is exceptional at the death and we'll utilise him there as opposed to Mitch.

"Players can [be flexible], particularly in their home country where you have a bigger sample size; you've seen Kane in the Big Bash and internationals and understand how effective he can be in this format."

Richardson conceded 16 runs in the 18th over with Rashid Khan pummelling him for two sixes towards the end of the over. But Vettori stated that most of Richardson's spell, except the last one, went to Australia's plan.

"I think we'll reflect on that and Kane would say he probably missed a couple at the back end of two overs. But apart from that the majority of his spell was what we expected. So if that had been tidied up he would have had a great day."

With the tournament on the line, dropping Starc was a huge call from Australia, one that evoked surprises even from the opposition camp with Afghanistan coach Jonathan Trott admitting that it was a "little bit of a surprise to us" in the post-match press conference.

Starc's dwindling form had been of concern for Australia. The move to use him as an old-ball bowler created quite a stir in cricketing circles given his reputation as a new-ball bowler who can swing the ball.

But in the only game he opened the attack - against New Zealand - Starc was taken apart by an aggressive Finn Allen.

"We feel as though he's got a really important role through the middle part of the innings," Finch had explained last week.

"If you don't get wickets through that middle phase of the game, you are incredibly vulnerable at the back end regardless of who is bowling. You could have the best two ever, and if you've got two set batters then it's going to be difficult to contain them.

"It's been a change in Mitch's role to be pushing harder through those middle overs and towards the back end of the Powerplay so that we can try and get a wicket there to expose a middle order. That's the only reason for it."

However, Starc's death bowling hasn't been up to the mark with Richardson's promising presence proving to be too tempting for Australia. With the latter going for runs against Rashid this match in the death overs phase, it remains to be seen how AUstralia tackle this selection issue if they do make it to the semi-finals.

ICC

Afghanistan coach Jonathan Trott has heaped praise on the talismanic Rashid Khan and urged more of the front-line batters to step up and support him.

Trott’s comments came after a brilliant 48* from just 23 balls almost saw Khan stun Australia in the teams’ final Super 12 game, with Afghanistan falling just four runs short.

The all-rounder came in at number eight after his side had allowed the momentum of a strong start to slip away.

But his knock, which included four maximums, was indicative of a supreme professional, according to Trott.

“He's been great throughout the tournament. The sort of fall that he had at the end of the last game – I remember speaking to him and he said, there's no chance I'm missing this game; I'm playing 100 percent.

“That's the type of character he is. That's the type of character we want on a side, certainly the sides that I've coached, and I love to have them.

“Not only obviously he's very talented, very skillful, but his attitude and his work ethic is second to none and a great example to all players around the world, not only the Afghan boys. Credit to him and he deserves everything he gets.”

Trott was asked whether Khan was slated too low in the order, a point with which he agreed, hinting at a promotion in future matches.

“I think so. I also think that there are other batsmen in the side who need to take responsibility for their innings and with the responsibility that they're charged with.”

The former England batter, who was appointed as head coach of the Afghanistan team back in July, wouldn’t name names, but reiterated his point.

“That's all I'd say on that. There are times that players need to stand up and accept the pressure that comes with playing international cricket. And you need to perform better.”

Afghanistan’s campaign was hampered by rain, which saw two of their matches washed out. But Trott was pleased to see his team involved in a game that showcased their undoubted potential, albeit leaving tinges of regret over what might have been.

“I think it's a good game to watch for the neutral. And I think it showed the skill and the talent of the players we have got, but also sometimes the awareness, situational awareness that we lack in parts. And I think we saw it against Sri Lanka and we've seen it again tonight.

“I think you always come away from a T20 game, you always want a little more," Trott added. "It's the type of game it ebbs and flows, the momentum of the game. That's what you had tonight.

“And the more often we can get those things going in our favour, we certainly have the capability to do so. And the more consistent we'll become as a side. That's how I feel. And going forward that's hopefully the approach and something we can conquer.”

Afghanistan will travel to Sri Lanka now that their tournament has come to an end, with a three-match ODI series scheduled to begin on 25 November.
