The Australian limited overs team had a forgettable 2017. They lost 4-1 to India and also failed to make the Champions Trophy knockouts.

The Australian team did not begin 2018 on a positive note either, losing 4-1 to England at home.

The team since 2017 has a win-loss record even poorer than Bangladesh as they have won only six out of their last 20 games.

The Australian batting order the last year or so has failed to stay relevant in the limited overs format. Captain Steven Smith – is arguably the best Test player in world cricket at the moment – isn’t the same force in the shorter format.

David Warner has been inconsistent and the Aussie middle order has been chopped and changed numerous times to have any sort of continuity.

With the World Cup 2019 just over a year away it is nice to see the selectors have started experimenting with the limited overs squad. The selection of successful players from the recently concluded BBL was the master stroke.

D’Arcy Short, Alex Carey, Chris Lynn along with Aaron Finch and David Warner makes an explosive batting line up.

The biggest gain for Australia though has been the return of Glenn Maxwell. His presence in the middle order means that the Aussies will get the much required push lower down the order which they so missed in the home series against England.

Mitchell Marsh and Marcus Stoinis also add to the exciting group of players the Australian limited overs team possess at the moment. The team management now have to make sure that they rotate the players wisely to identify the right combination for the World Cup.

Even though the top three for the ODI format looks settled with Aaron Finch, David Warner and Steve Smith, I would like to see Short in the mix to change it up a little bit.

Probably one of Warner or Finch can drop down to number three to allow Short to open the batting? It might be something worth trying.

Travis Head is another fantastic player who probably would play in the middle order as well.

Steven Smith at number four and Travis Head at five followed by Glen Maxwell at six will give Australia a fantastic middle order.

Mitchell Marsh and Marcus Stoinis will also be in the running for the top six spot in ODIs. Chris Lynn also will be in the mix but he has been really inconsistent at the international level.

Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc will be the three first choice pacers but Andrew Tye and Billy Stanlake will also be in the mix for the shorter formats.

Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar will probably be the first choice spinners in the limited overs format. Cameron Boyce who bowled brilliantly in this year’s BBL also is an option for the ODIs.

Australia now have amazing bunch of players to pick from and are currently spoilt for riches.

The team management now will need to make the call as to what their most effective XI will be for the world cup.

The good thing is that they do not need to make the call right now and have more than a year to figure out the right combination.

The selectors have made the right calls finally and core for the future Australian limited overs side has been formed.

Australia in a matter of couple of months have gone from a team completely out of depth to a team with a genuine chance to defend their title in England.

The below players will form the core of Australia limited overs side for the next year and a half. The majority of them for sure will be on the plane to England for the 2019 World Cup.

Squad: David Warner, Aaron Finch, Steven Smith (C), Travis Head, D’Arcy Short, Alex Carey (WK), Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Marsh, Marcus Stoinis, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Andrew Tye, Adam Zampa, Ashton Agar, Chris Lynn.

Middle order a little short of experience. Spinners are not world class as well.
India favourites for me.

India are facing similar issues. India is a top heavy team and I hope they find the right combination for the middle order. Right now it is not the best line up in the world. Rahane and Jadhav have no place in the ODI X1. Pandya also is very inconsistent. Bowling is looking okay with two very good wrist spinners. The pace bowlers except for Bumrah/Bhvi haven't bowled that many overs in recent times. So all teams going through a experimental phase now, Australia is looking good with some good young batters.

Not really, Australian pace attack is useless in England.

Didn't this team just get smashed by england in the ODI series that happened.

Lynn is injury prone, Short has no ODI record. Their middle order doesn't have any real stabilizing player who can anchor the innings, Smith isn't even half the player he is in tests. Their bowling is ok, but neither zampa and definitely not agar can be considered really great LoI spinners.

This team looks good in t-20's but ODI's are going to be difficult especially away from home.

They always have a team. They are mentally superior to almost all teams.Very few teams can challenge them in a world cup scenario. They just raise their game in world cup like in no other tournament.

Aussies always will be a force in cricket. That is because of there mental strength , they fight till the end.

They have been to finals 7 times winning 5 times , with once three consecutive times. That shows there quality.

They never play their strongest team till the World Cup comes around anyway. They trial and test a lot of players.

:lee.In 2011 world cup also they gave India a scare with a Declining side.Ricky ponting in that game scored a 100 and was on his last legs.It was just they ran into inform Yuvraj.
Their mental strength sets them apart.Compare that to South Africa who wil panic and gift wickets through silly runouts

I remember Damien Martyn words after Wc 2003 win "Aussie team and players are never greats before a world cup. They become greats after a World cup"

Something tells me that India and Pakistan will play the WC 2019 final.

If it happens, remember that I said it here first :ashwin

Aussies always find form or clicks as a team during WC’s.. So they will definitely be a strong contender maybe not favourites as in 2003 or 2007 but definitely a strong contender..

When have the Aussies ever had a weak team?

Everyone (the whole cricketing world: NZ, the English, Indians and Pakistanis) hates them.

They have (as far as my earliest memories go) always been a tough team.

The phainta we delivered them in UAE was sweeter than honey :misbah :yk

They always had - no wonder they have won it 5 times and made the final one more. They prepare for WC best way - take 3/4 years and find their best 18/19 players, from whom they pick final 15. Always a great team and they don’t choke, one reason being picking specialists for the purpose. I won’t be surprised if they pick Lyon just for that WC as a specialist spinner. One semi-finalist for sure - I don’t think recent ODI series against Poms is a true reflection of both teams under clutch situation.

When Aussies finally select the team to win they are always the favourites. Half their bowlers are resting for next Ashes in any given JAMODI.

I wish they would try Warner in permanent leadership in LOs.

Looks like Maxwell has finally matured if he can replicate his T20 form to ODIs then he could be the player to win it for Australia. He should not bat at 6.

If not Pakistan, I am rooting for SA because of AB.

Its between Aus, Eng and India with an outside side of Pakistan.

He's the primary reason (alongside Amla) why I want South Africa to fail miserably.

Australia had a very poor 2017 and early 2018 which included a world tournament. The current Aussie side which played in the T20 series had some very good players who will be hard to contain on flat English wickets. Their bowling is not that bad either. They will surely be one of the top contenders as always.

Australia have the team for WC - if it were being held on autobahns of Australia. In those flat conditions they can overcome sides with brute speed and athleticism. Their batsmen would run 3 where others would be happy with 2 on those big hard grounds.

If the conditions become even slightly juicier, they'd likely come unstuck.
