Star's performance in world cups have been exceptional but credit should be given to Australian board who know how to mange their resources well. They rested key players before the worldncup. ofcourse couple of them were sandpaper boys who are frauds but nevertheless starc barely played odis. I think other top teams should adopt this policy too. Pakistan should rest amir for big tournaments. Starc only played a few odis prior to the world cup. His workload was managed well and hence he is well rested. Fatigue factor plays a huge role in a tournament.
bilaterals and odi series should be used to test players. It's pointless anyway. World cup is what matters and obviously test cricket.
Australia do have the benefit of having depth in bowling with the likes of ,jhye richardson, coulter nile, kane richardson and hazelwood apart from their front line bowlers like starc cummins and behrendorff.
The quality clearly drops without starc and it clearly reflects their record without him in ******** odi/bilaterals which amount to nothing anyway.

So imo pakistan, india and England adopting this sort of policy would help a year prior to the world cup.
Ofcourse rankings look good on paper but imo rankings are only Important in test cricket.

in odi only world cup result matters. It's not like we get seeded in a world cup comps based on rankings. So pakistan should play hasnain, shinwari, junaid etc in odi/bilateral. India should obviously rest bumrah and shami for a lot of their bilateral/ jamodi series as its pointless. Play the youngsters etc.
Ofcourse the key players need a game too but use them sparingly.

Lack of rest/ ipl costed South Africa dearly for sure.

Steyn out, Ngidi injured for majority of the tournament, rabada fatigued and not bowling at top speeds

South Africa and West Indies can learn a lot from Australia. Had South Africa managed workloads of Rabada and Steyn better, they might have been in better shape.
