Australia have been forced into three changes for a whirlwind T20 tour of India with selectors taking a conservative approach ahead of next month's T20 World Cup title defence.

David Warner had already been rested from the trip and now Mitch Starc (knee), Mitch Marsh (ankle) and Marcus Stoinis (side) have been ruled out of the tour, with Nathan Ellis, Daniel Sams and Sean Abbott added to the squad.

The injuries to the trio are minor, but with the travel involved for three games in three separate cities in six days in India, Australia has taken a cautious approach with their T20 World Cup campaign due to start on October 22 when they face New Zealand at the SCG.

The injuries to Marsh and Stoinis emerged during Australia's north Queensland ODI series against Zimbabwe and New Zealand, but Starc is a late exclusion from the tour after a scan on his knee today in Sydney.

Australia will play home T20 series against the West Indies and England in the lead-up to the World Cup, with Warner, Marsh, Starc and Stoinis all expected to be available for those games.

The absence of Stoinis all-but guarantees Tim David will make his Australian debut on the India tour as a middle-order finisher, and gives him the chance to make it difficult for Stoinis to force his way back into the side.

Marsh's absence could see Steve Smith move back up to No.3 with allrounder Cameron Green coming into the side, while Josh Inglis is likely to partner Aaron Finch at the top of the order with Warner rested from the tour for family time.

Ashton Agar, who was the victim of Australia's bold selection policy by being dropped as they powered their way to the World Cup title in the UAE last year, is also in the squad.

Marsh, in particular, is a key cog in Australia's hopes of becoming the first men’s team to win back-to-back T20 World Cup titles.

The 30-year-old reported ankle soreness following Australia's win in the first ODI against Zimbabwe in Townsville and was immediately put on ice to recover.

Marsh had his finest hour in Australian gold to break the men’s side’s T20 World Cup title drought in Dubai last November, striking 77 not out from 50 balls at No.3 in an eight-wicket win.

Stoinis played an instrumental role alongside Matthew Wade in Australia's semi-final victory over Pakistan, with the allrounder striking 40no off 31 balls as Australia stormed back from needing 62 in the final five overs to win.

The amended Australia squad will fly to India early on Thursday ahead of a few days of acclimatisation and training leading into the first match next Tuesday in Mohali.

They play again on September 23 in Nagpur before the final match two days later in Hyderabad.

Australia will then return home before hosting the West Indies on October 5 and 7 in Queensland.

Ellis comes into the squad off the back of an excellent T20 Blast season with Hampshire, including bowling the dramatic final over where he successfully defended a total to secure a one-run win.

He claimed 15 wickets in 13 matches with a miserly economy rate of 6.87, the second best of any quick to deliver 10 overs. He added seven wickets in nine Hundred games for London Spirit.

Sams took 14 wickets in 12 T20 Blast games and was expensive at 9.05 per over, but enhanced his lower-order hitting credentials with 165 runs at a strike rate of 171.87, with 13 sixes.

That strike rate went up to 190.90 as he clubbed 105 runs in five innings for Trent Rockets in the Hundred, adding seven wickets in nine games with an economy of 10.20.

India, meanwhile, have welcomed back Jasprit Bumrah to their squad, while also recalling a fit-again Harshal Patel to bolster their pace bowling for the World Cup in Australia.

Bumrah missed the recent Asia Cup with a back injury that has kept him out of action since mid-July.

Patel too has recovered from a rib injury to join the 15-member squad as a potent death-overs bowling option alongside veteran Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

There was no room in the World Cup squad for noted death-overs specialist Mohammed Shami, but he will feature in the series against Australia with Arshdeep Singh held back.

Of the two wicketkeepers in the Rohit Sharma-led squad, Rishabh Pant gives India the option of playing the left-handed batsman as a free-moving 'floater', while Dinesh Karthik has a formidable reputation as a 'finisher'.

India, who begin their campaign with an October 23 blockbuster against arch-rivals Pakistan in Melbourne, will miss the injured Ravindra Jadeja but have a like-for-like replacement in spin all-rounder Axar Patel.

Seasoned Ravichandran Ashwin was picked as the second spinner, behind Yuzvendra Chahal.

These bilateral T20 games are meaningless games. So, it is better if they get rested before World T20.

Starc hasn't come to India after the 2017 test series. Even for IPL I think. What can be the reason ?

Haha, Australia again, Pant will again make his haters cry lol :91: :inti

Mohammed Shami has been ruled out of the forthcoming India-Australia Twenty20 International series. Cricbuzz learns that the veteran pacer has tested positive for Covid and has not reached Mohali, the venue of the first of the three T20Is against the Aussies. The match is on September 20.

The information reached the concerned officials in the BCCI and the team management on Saturday (September 17), when the team reached Mohali. The Australian team is also believed to have reached the city.

Umesh Yadav is likely to be nominated as a replacement and his availability is subject to him testing negative for the Covid virus. Umesh recently returned from an incomplete county stint with Middlesex, unable to join them back owing to a quad muscle injury. The county said in a statement on September 17 that Umesh, who had traveled to India for an assessment with BCCI's medical team, had "not recovered sufficiently to handle the workload required in a four-day game" and hence will play no further part in the ongoing County Championship.

The home Australia series ends on September 25 in Hyderabad after the second game in Nagpur on September 23.

Whether Shami will be taking part in the subsequent three-match T20I series against South Africa is also dependent on his recovery from Covid infection. The three T20I matches against South Africa are on September 28, October 2 and October 4 in Thiruvananthapuram, Guwahati and Indore respectively.

It is an unexpected setback for Shami, who had been picked for a T20I after almost a year; he last played the format for India at the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE. A good showing in the twin series against Australia and South Africa would have presented him with an opportunity to make it to the World Cup squad in case of an injury to the four pacers - Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh and Harshal Patel - selected ahead of him. Two of those are in the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru and as reported by Cricbuzz earlier in the evening, Shami is to fly to Australia along with the regular squad for the World Cup.

For Umesh (34), it is a welcome break into the white-ball team. The veteran pacer from Nagpur last played an ODI in October 2018 and a T20I in February 2019.

South Africa are also scheduled to play three ODIs against India on October 6, 9 and 11 in Lucknow, Ranchi and Delhi. However, any players in the T20I squad will not be taking part in the ODIs. A squad under Shikhar Dhawan will take on the South Africans.

India Squad for Australia T20Is: Rohit Sharma (Captain), KL Rahul (vice-captain), Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Rishabh Pant (wicket-keeper), Dinesh Karthik (wicket-keeper), Hardik Pandya, R. Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, Deepak Chahar, Jasprit Bumrah and Umesh Yadav.

I don't see Arshdeep name here, is he rested for this series?

Mohammad Shami has been ruled out of the three-match T20I series against Australia after contracting COVID-19.

Umesh Yadav has been named as Shami's replacement for the three-match series. The 34-year-old returns to India's T20I setup after a gap of more than three years, having last played the shortest format in February 2019 against Australia.

Yadav has only represented India in seven games but has been a consistent bowler in the India Premier League (IPL). In the most recent edition, he finished with 16 wickets in 12 matches at an economy of 7.06 and was particularly a menace in the Powerplay with his pace.

India squad for Australia T20I series: Rohit Sharma (Captain), KL Rahul (vice-captain), Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Rishabh Pant (wicket-keeper), Dinesh Karthik (wicket-keeper), Hardik Pandya, R. Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, Deepak Chahar, Jasprit Bumrah, Umesh Yadav.

Rohit Sharma-led Team India will square off against Australia next in a three-match T20I series, beginning Tuesday in Mohali. It would be interesting to see whether the hosts continue with same level of experimentation that was on display during the Asia Cup, where the side failed to make it to the final of the continental tournament. Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel have recovered from their injuries, so that is an added bonus for Team India. Skipper Rohit Sharma on Sunday addressed a press conference where he spoke about what to expect and whether Virat Kohli can be looked at as an opener in the shortest format.

"It is always nice to have options available for you. It is important going into a World Cup that you have flexibility. You want the players to be in best shape batting at any position. When we try and do something new, that does not mean that's a problem," said Rohit during a press conference.

"For us, we understand the quality of all our players and what they bring for us. But yeah, it is an option (Virat Kohli opening) for us, we will always keep that in mind. Since we have not taken a third opener, he opens for his franchise in the IPL and he has done really well, so it is a definite option for us," he said further while talking about whether Kohli can be looked at as an opener," he added.

Further talking about Virat opening the batting, Rohit said: "Virat Kohli is our third opener. In the last match of Asia Cup, we were happy with the way he played. KL Rahul will open the batting in the World Cup, his performance sometimes goes quite unnoticed."

"He is a very important player for Team India. For us, I just want to make it clear, we are clear in our thought process. We do not have any confusion, we are very clear what KL Rahul brings to the table for us, he is a quality player and is very important for us. His presence at the top is very crucial for us," said the 35-year-old.

Ahead of the series opener, it was confirmed that Mohammed Shami won't play any part as he has tested positive for COVID-19 and Umesh Yadav has been named as his replacement.

"There were few options, but few of them are injured like Prasidh. Siraj is playing county, we do not want him to fly all the way, maybe play one or two games. That won't be fair. Obviously, Shami unfortunate incident with him. Avesh was quite sick in the Asia Cup and he needs some time to recover. From fitness point of view, he needed some time and rebuild his fitness. All those things were considered. Guys like Umesh, Shami, who have been bowling for a long time, they do not need to be playing a format to be considered," said Rohit.

"They have proven themselves as players in whichever format they have played. We understand the quality, it is the new guys on whom it will depend whether they have played this format or not. But guys like Umesh and Shami, if they are fit and fine, they will be called back. We don't need to look at their form, we saw how Umesh bowled in the IPL," he stated further.

Further talking about Umesh's selection, Rohit said: "He bowled really well, he swings the ball, bowls fast. That was the thought, pretty simple actually. It was not much of a discussion for us. Keeping in mind World Cup is around the corner, we have tried a lot of players. We are very much clear in our thought process and how we want to move forward," he added.

India squad for Australia series: Rohit Sharma (c), KL Rahul (vice-captain), Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Rishabh Pant, Dinesh Karthik, Hardik Pandya, R. Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, Deepak Chahar, Jasprit Bumrah, Umesh Yadav.

Australia pacer Pat Cummins has issued a warning to opposition batters by declaring he is fit and firing and ready to peak during the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup.

Cummins skipped Australia's recent home series against Zimbabwe and New Zealand and hasn't featured for his country since their World Test Championship series against Sri Lanka at the start of July.

The break has allowed Cummins to get plenty of rest into his battle-weary body and spend some extra time with his wife and young child ahead of a busy summer of cricket at home for Australia.

Cummins is currently in India preparing for Australia's three-match T20I series against India, before he returns home to try and help his side retain the T20 World Cup crown they won in Dubai last year.

And Australia's Test captain says he is ready for the hectic upcoming schedule and confident he can make an impact in whatever format he plays.

"I'm pretty keen to play quite a lot so that come the World Cup I feel like my game is in really good order," Cummins said.

"That World Cup is the time we want to be peaking so I think we'll find that balance between making sure we're ready but not overcooked going to the start of the World Cup.

"I feel probably the best I have for a year or two, my body feels fresh, it feels like I've been able to have a mini pre-season.

"In terms of mindset, I feel really fresh and ready to get stuck in, so it was a great break, a couple of the niggles are fine.

"There will be ongoing management, some of those things just compound if you don't get that little window, so they are all as good as they have been for a while."

Australia will field a relatively experimental side against India during the three-match series that commences in Mohali on Tuesday, with as many as four first choice players missing through injury or rested.

Veteran opener David Warner skipped the tour to help obtain some extra rest prior to the T20 World Cup, while regulars Mitch Marsh (ankle), Marcus Stoinis (side) and Mitchell Starc (knee) are battling minor injury concerns.

It means highly-touted all-rounder Tim David is likely to make his Australia debut against India and Cummins is confident the 26-year-old can slot in seamlessly to his side’s middle-order.

"He's been right up there with the best in the world batting in that middle-order," Cummins said.

"It's a really tough spot (to bat), you see most of the run-scorers open the batting or in the top-order.

"It's really hard to be consistent coming in when there's spin bowlers or at the end of the innings and I think he's been fantastic.

"So if he gets his chance, hopefully he can continue doing what he's been doing in the domestic leagues around the world."

Australia squad: Aaron Finch (c), Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Pat Cummins, Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Josh Inglis, Glenn Maxwell, Kane Richardson, Daniel Sams, Steve Smith, Matthew Wade, Adam Zampa.

Series schedule:

September 20: First T20, Mohali
September 23: Second T20, Nagpur
September 25: Third T20, Hyderabad

Australia captain Aaron Finch says the reigning T20 world champions won't be pigeonholed into a certain team structure as they look to ensure they have plenty of options should something not go to plan during next month's World Cup.

Finch's side ramp up their preparations for their T20 World Cup title defence on home soil on Tuesday night when their three-match tour of India gets underway in Mohali.

And he said they would take the local conditions into account when selecting their team during the whirlwind six-day tour despite the stark contrast in the conditions in India and those that await during the World Cup in Australia.

"Every decision that we make has one eye towards the World Cup and seeing the wicket yesterday it looked like there was quite a bit of grass on it," the 35-year-old told reporters from Mohali on Monday.

"We know in Mohali the ball can swing around and it can carry through quite a bit.

"We'll be mindful of not being too narrow minded in terms of our focus – what we've tried to do over the last eight to 10 months is to make sure everything we're doing in the T20 space ties back to the World Cup.

"For us, it's about making sure once we get there that we've had plenty of different combinations of teams that we can play because the last thing that you want is have an injury derail your whole campaign because you're pigeonholed into playing one style of cricket or one structure of team.

"There will be a little bit of mixing and matching but still with that one eye towards the World Cup to make sure we're still as rounded as we can be as a squad."

The tour is almost certain to include a highly anticipated Australia debut for middle-order power-hitter Tim David with Marcus Stoinis ruled out of the three T20Is with a side injury, while Finch flagged Steve Smith would return to the No.3 in the absence of Mitch Marsh with a minor ankle injury.

There is also a vacancy at the top of the order alongside the skipper with David Warner rested, while Test captain Pat Cummins returns to national duties after sitting out of Australia's recent one-day international series victories against New Zealand and Zimbabwe and veteran white-ball quick Kane Richardson looks set to retain his spot with Mitchell Starc also nursing a knee injury.

David, who played 14 T20 internationals for Singapore between July 2019 and March 2020, has forced his way into Australia's World Cup squad through dominant performances in domestic T20 leagues including the BBL and Indian Premier League as well as England's Hundred and T20 Blast, Pakistan and Caribbean leagues.

The 26-year-old, who has hit the most sixes in T20 cricket this year with 79, has impressed Finch and national selectors with his power, along with his consistency in the tough five, six and seven 'finishing' roles.

"We're not going to ask him to do anything he's never done before," Finch said.

"We back his skill set, we back what he brings to the table and we back that his best is well and truly good enough for international cricket.

"Tim's been super impressive for a long period of time in T20 cricket now, he's someone who we know has got the power, he's shown that all around the world wherever he's played.

"The fact he's come into the squad with such a great attitude, he's been training brilliantly, he's a really good all-round package with his ability to bowl a few overs, very good in the field, so we're excited with what he brings to the squad."

Green, who is not in the T20 World Cup squad but was called up for the Indian tour with Warner rested, also appears likely to play just his second T20 international due to the absences of allrounders Marsh and Stoinis.

Green impressed in the 50-over series against New Zealand and Zimbabwe, which included a match-winning 89 not out in the series opener with the Black Caps, and if selected during the T20 tour it will be the 23-year-old's first time playing in India.

Finch said Green had "all the tricks and the game sense" to be a successful three format player for Australia.

"Cameron's been really impressive, every level he's played in he's continued to improve," Finch said.

"The thing I love most about him is how quick he adapts and learns from the very minimal mistakes that he makes."

Hyderabad Stampede: Four people were injured after a stampede broke out at Gymkhana grounds following a stampede which happened after massive amount of cricket fans gathered to purchase tickets for the third T20I match between India and Australia. The third T20I stadium between India and Australia will take place in Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad on September 25. A huge crowd had come to the Gymkhana grounds to purchase tickets. A large queue of fans was captured waiting to get their hands on tickets.

But the situation soon turned out of control and a stampede broke out, with excited fans coming in excessive numbers and causing law and order issues. Police lathi-charged to disperse the massive crowd and restore control.

Watch Video: Here are some videos doing the rounds on Twitter of the Hyderabad stampede

Coming to the series between these two sides, Australia currently leads it 1-0.

Coming to the first T20I at Mohali, after being put to bat first by Australia, India lost skipper Rohit Sharma (11) and Virat Kohli (2) for cheap scores. This left Men in Blue struggling at 35/2. KL Rahul (55) and Suryakumar Yadav (46) then stabilised the innings with a 68-run stand. Then, Hardik Pandya played a brilliant knock of 71* off just 30 balls with seven fours and five sixes to finish the innings at 208/6.

Pacers Nathan Ellis (3/30) and Josh Hazlewood (2/39) were the most successful Aussie bowlers.

Chasing 209, openers Aaron Finch (22) and Cameron Green stitched a quickfire 39-run stand to get Australia off to a solid start. Green played some really impressive strokes and stitched a 70-run stand with Steve Smith (35). Green was dismissed for an impressive 61 off 30 balls.

Following this, Men in Blue made a comeback to the match, getting wickets of Smith, Glenn Maxwell (1) and Josh Inglis (17) within a space of just 36 runs.

But wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Wade (45*) and debutant Tim David (18) stitched a 62-run stand to help the Aussies win the match by four wickets, finishing the innings at 211/6.

Cameron Green was adjudged as 'Man of the Match' for his 61 and 1/46.

The second T20I match will take place on Friday in Nagpur at Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium.

Mohammad Azharuddin, president of the Hyderabad Cricket Association, has addressed the chaos that broke out at the Gymkhana ground on Thursday morning, saying it is unfair to put the blame on the body. A stampede erupted at the venue where the tickets for the third India vs Australia T20I were up for sale, with police using lathi-charge on the massive crowd that had turned up. Azharuddin stated that although his sympathies are with those affected by this unfortunate turn of events, he does not think HCA was at any fault.

"It is not as easy to conduct a match as sitting in this room and discussing. We have done nothing wrong. We are with the fans who were injured in the morning incidents, and the HCA will take care of them completely. I will give a complete report on the sale of tickets, availability and other details to the Minister and he will tell you what is correct and what is wrong," Azharuddin said during a conference which was also attended by Sports Minister V Srinivas Goud, who sought an explanation from HCA members.

Approximately 30,000 people were waiting in long queues for a total of 3000 tickets that went up for sale, and this led to utter chaos, leading to a stampede in which 20 people were injured. Certain videos of the unfortunate incident have surfaced on social media to demonstrate the seriousness of the matter. Azharuddin mentioned that with Hyderabad hosting a cricket match after a long gap, there ought to be problems and that he and his team will provide the follow-up information to the media as and when available.

"There are going to be problems. Yes, the public wants to see the match after a three-year gap. But, again, not all of them can do it. We will give all the details at the media briefing on Friday. We have nothing to hide. But, at the same time, we have to make sure the game goes forward. The Supreme Court has not given any order restraining my powers," added the former India captain.

Haha, Australia again, Pant will again make his haters cry lol :91: :inti
He has been dropped for Dinesh Kartik. Not dropped for QdK or Buttler, dropped because of Dinesh Kartik. That's the reality for Pant for the moment.
Let's see how things go on from here.

Both men are much older than Pant so Pant has time to catch up with them.

In tests however, he has already surpassed Buttler and in the process of surpassing Qdk who is not far ahead of his level. :inti
