You would think he might have taken the new ball when it was available then eh? :13:

Taken 2 overs late to ensure it is new enough in the morning as well when bowlers can attack with full energy.

I just saw a over n two and boy the way amir was bowling. the commentators were laughing at this defensive display of bowling. he was bowling outside off stump and that too very wide. the commentators were saying where is yousuf he should tell him to make him play then he said or this could be the captains advice to young amir. so what can u say then. clearly showed he was bowling the way yousuf wanted.

this is very embarssing. i think pak got what they deserved, dropped pontings catch and now they made 200 partnership. i think we will looose this one aswell cuz aussie in strong position to make 500+ then pak will bat twice n loose. this is what im predicting if we keep the pathetic defensive approach. thanks to molana

Day one ends with the home side well on top of this match. After a shakey start, the Australian pair of Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke have stabilised the innings and then some, even breaking records along the way. Australia's dominance over their opponent was best demonstrated late in the day when the visitors resorted to ugly defensive tactics, i.e. the pace bowlers keeping it short and well wide of off stump.

Its only day 1, why would you start being defensive already?

You seem to have a one track agenda

Australia will have to win some matches against Eng, Ind and SA to move back to no 1. Even a 3-0 victory against Pak will not give them much points

Woeful stuff from Pakistan. A day that started with such promise, with three top order wickets in the sheds after one session and two out of form batsmen at the crease forced to grind runs out, has ended in a damp squib with both those out of form batsmen back in the groove. Every team has those moments where they basically just throw their hands up and wait for the other team to make a mistake, but it very rarely happens when you have just been in the ascendancy and it's only Day 1.

It's been a very, very long time since I've seen a team so bad at catching and fielding than Pakistan. It's not just missing tough catches, it's the body language and the effort. It looks shambolic at times.

Fielding is often the sign of the work ethic of a side, and to me Pakistan's fielding is representative of an aversion to hard yakka (work) and a desire to take shortcuts. It extends to the batting as well, where players would rather plant their front foot forward at the crease and score in fours and sixes rather than to establish themselves at the crease and rotate the strike by running hard between the wickets.

A good fielding side is a side that is energetic and pumped, and usually you will see a lot of movement in the field between overs and a lot of chatter. Occasionally we see that from Pakistan, esp. when a wicket has just fallen, but when things aren't going their way they tend to become very lethargic and look like they are either waiting for one moment of brilliance from someone or a mistake from the opposition. Waiting for things to happen, rather than making things happen. Dropped catches tend to do that to a side's morale - because in this game of cricket chances don't come by too often and you have to take advantage of them when they do present themselves.

Negativity written all over this Pakistani side, with the Captain Marvellous :moyo on top of the pile in negativity department.

You sum up team Pakistan pretty well. The fact is that this is a reflection of an almost 70 year old easy going coach, how can such a coach inspire and motivate the team? If I had a coach like him, I'd pretty much want to just eat and sleep all day. If Pakistan really want to be a respectable test side, then these short cuts and kam choori will not change anything, they need to work hard, put in the time and reap the rewards, otherwise it is more of the same.

One thing that speaks volumes about the team is the fact that young guys like Umar Akmal and Amir have dropped critical catches, some were pure sitters. These young guys should be working harder than anyone else and should be some of the best fielders in the side, but really this is the state of Pakistan cricket and its future unless real hard work is done to improve.
