The opening day and night of the first Commonwealth Bank Day-Night Test at the Gabba has attracted the highest ever first day crowd outside of an Ashes Test match.

By the start of the second session, more than 20,000 fans had entered the venue with the final first day total reaching 26,343.

This eclipsed the previous best first day crowd for a non-Ashes Test match of 25,114 which came on 9 November, 2012 when Australia took on South Africa, the first time in more than 30 years that the Proteas had played at the Gabba.

Cricket Australia Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland said he was thrilled at the response to the opening day, coming as it did on the 85th anniversary of the first ever Test at the Gabba.

“Fans have again voted with their feet to embrace the day-night concept, this time in Queensland. We’re looking forward to even more fans enjoying this fantastic spectacle in the coming days and are confident of beating the all-time non-Ashes attendance record at the venue.”

Queensland Cricket Chief Executive Officer Max Walters congratulated the fans who enjoyed the historic day of play.

“I think the spectacle and the occasion have been first rate and the fans certainly look as if they have enjoyed the event,’’ he said.

“It’s a very encouraging vindication of the decision to award Brisbane a Day/Night Test and one that we look forward to building on in the future.”

“Certainly the partnership that was formed between Cricket Australia, the Queensland Government and Brisbane City Council and announced earlier this year has played a significant role in the success,” Walters said.

That partnership confirmed that the Gabba will host International cricket for the next three years including the First Ashes Test next summer.

The record attendance for a non-Ashes Test match at the Brisbane Cricket Ground is 55,947 against Sri Lanka in 2007-08 which took place over five days.

Gabba reaches record in just three days

The historic Gabba Commonwealth Bank Day-Night Test has continued to draw strong crowds, with a record attendance confirmed today for a non-Ashes Test match at the venue.

The opening game of the Commonwealth Bank Test series against Pakistan had attracted 66,325 fans after the first session, with the two-session ‘twilight’ tickets now applying.

In 1975-76, the West Indies and Australia drew 64,383 fans to the “old” Gabba.

The previous high point for a non-Ashes Test at the venue (which was redeveloped progressively from 1995), was 55,947 against Sri Lanka in 2007-08.

The first two days of the Test against Pakistan saw attendances of 26,353 and 23,344, with more than 16,500 fans admitted today before tea.

Cricket Australia Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland was delighted with the outcome.

“We have seen fans vote with their feet to embrace the day-night concept in Queensland. We’ve managed to break the non-ashes attendance record at the venue in just three days, and we’re looking forward to even more fans enjoying this fantastic spectacle.

“Our sincere thanks goes to Queensland Cricket, Tourism & Events Queensland, Stadiums Queensland and Brisbane Marketing for the support in placing the Gabba as a prime international cricket venue,” said Sutherland

Queensland Cricket Chief Executive Officer Max Walters applauded the support shown by fans of the inaugural pink ball Test.

“There has been a wonderful sense of occasion and the atmosphere has been electric, especially when the lights come on and the sun sets,’’ he said.

“Innovations like the Pool Deck and Sandy Point areas have received international coverage and presented the Gabba in a very favourable light.”

“The backing that the event has enjoyed from Cricket Australia, Tourism & Events Queensland and Brisbane Marketing has delivered a first class experience for many fans and we look forward to building on this success for the rest of the season, with the popular BBL just around the corner, and in the seasons to come,’’ said Walters.

The Gabba administrators will be annoyed that they won't add much to the attendance figures after we're all out tonight

Attendence might drop tommorow, due to the horrendous show by Pakistan. I expect crowds in Melbourne and Sydney to be lower due to the result of this match

I know sydney one day is almost a sell out but test is also going at a high pace, i plan on attending both!
