'Snake Cracks' On Perth Test Pitch? Chief Curator Makes Big Revelation

WACA head curator Isaac McDonald on Wednesday said the unusual rain in Perth has impacted the pitch preparation for the first Test of Border-Gavaskar Trophy and though he doesn't expect the surface to develop "snake cracks", there will still be plenty of bounce and carry. The surface at the Optus Stadium or at the nearby WACA ground is known for its pace and bounce and when the cracks open up in dry conditions, it provides more assistance to the seamers besides bringing the spinners into play.

The city has witnessed rain over the past few days and the pitch was covered for the whole day on Tuesday, cutting down preparation time for the curator.

"Yeah, it's definitely not traditional Perth Test prep. Yesterday we pretty much lost the whole day of prep with it being under cover. So we kind of saw the forecast early on and we started prep a little bit earlier than we normally would.

"So we're sitting quite comfortable still. It'd be nice if the sun would pop out and do its job but as of this morning we're in a good spot, we're really comfortable as a curating team," McDonald told media ahead of the series opener beginning on Friday.

The pitch is likely to retain moisture come match day, effectively ruling out the possibility of major deterioration over the course of five days.

"I don't think the weather is going to make this pitch fall apart. There'll be some deterioration, grass will stand up during the game and offer that variable bounce but in terms of big snake WACA cracks, unfortunately I don't think the weather is going to get us there," said the head curator.

The forecast is clear for Friday as well as the remaining four days but the temperatures are unlikely to increase drastically. McDonald wants the sun to emerge from the clouds at the earliest so that the surface can behave close to its traditional nature.

"I mean everyone talks about the traditional baking of the top. We can kind of manufacture that with more rolling and less water on top if we have to. We're testing the wicket hour by hour so it's quite conditions based at the moment.

"So at the moment we're leaning towards rolling it a bit more on top to get that firmness and that happy medium between bat and ball. But yeah, fingers crossed the sun pops out," he said.

Pakistan recently bundled out Australia for 140 in an ODI at the Optus Stadium here. The grass cover was expectedly less for a limited overs game, 4mm to be exact. It will be at least double for the India-Australia Test opener.

How much grass will we get to see before toss? "We've still got to try and get to a point where we think we're going to be fine by Friday. We're still in around the ballpark, 8 to 10 mm, was where we were last year as well.

"So we're sitting quite comfortable and having quite open conversations within the curating team of what we feel is appropriate and where to go from there. There's still be really good pace and bounce in the pitch.

"It'll just come in how well they look after the ball and how true the surface stays. We're meant to get to 30-32 degrees over the weekend so we'll see what the grass on top does there but in terms of coming off cracks I just don't think we're going to get there," felt McDonald.

Perth is hosting the opening game of a marquee series and that is bound to put some pressure on the groundstaff. However, McDonald is not feeling the heat.

"I don't think it's pressure, it doesn't change what I do. I've still got to deliver the best playing surface I can. So in terms of pressure, I don't know if we're, another word for pressure, I suppose, you know. It's nice to be the first test. It's the excitement around it is nice. The buzz is nice. The energy in our team is great. And it's something that we all look forward to every year." He chose to stay on the fence when asked what he would do if he wins the toss on Friday.

"It's way above my pay grade mate. I think we're setting ourselves up really nicely for it. All things are leading to getting that pitch rock hard come Friday morning and as I said people above my pay grade will get to choose and see what they do," McDonald added.

India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel said during pre-match press conference:

“Jassi [Jasprit Bumrah] is a guy who immediately put his hand up and he wanted that leadership role. He’s been very successful here in the past.”

“He knows what to expect. In the dressing room, he speaks well. And he’s a guy who I know, with the ball in hand, will lead from the front and then the rest of the younger guys will follow.”

Happy that Pujara isn't here: Josh Hazlewood
Australian fast bowler Josh Hazlewood is relieved Team India is without the services of Cheteshwar Pujara for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy which starts on 22 November in Perth. Pujara was the highest run-getter in the India vs Australia Test series Down Under in 2018-19 with 521 runs in four Tests as India won their first-ever Test series in Australia. He also scored 271 in the 2020-21 series Down Under, helping India to clinch their second consecutive BGT in Australia.

Pujara, however, has been out of favour in the Indian Test side, having last played in the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC) final. “I’m pretty happy that Puj (Cheteshwar Pujara) isn’t here (smiles). He’s obviously one that bats time, makes you really earn his wicket every time, has done really well in Australia on all these tours,” Hazlewood said in Perth on Wednesday.

‘They’re all great players’

The 33-year-old Australian pacer, however, refused to undermine the current Indian lot that includes young batters like Sarfaraz Khan, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, meanwhile, Devdutt Padikkal is also expected to play in the Perth Test after injury to Shubman Gill.

“So there’s always young, fresh guys coming into the Indian team that they’re under so much pressure to perform in the Indian team with so many guys nipping at their heels all the time. Whoever they pick in that XI, they’re unbelievable players. It doesn’t really matter who they pick, they’re all great players,” he added.

“Anytime you disrupt the top-six it’s a bit of an issue but as I said the amount of talent in the Indian squad is quite unbelievable, the depth is phenomenal, better than any other country in the world. So whoever comes in has earned their stripes and no doubt will do well,” added Hazlewood.

Hazlewood added the Indian cricket team will miss Mohammed Shami who returned to cricketing action recently after a year-long injury layoff.
Yeah let's see whether it was Pant or Pujara, the real difference maker...

Siraj was the best bowler in last tour of Australia. He came from 2nd test onwards and was the most successful bowler as by the 4th test, he was leading that bowling attack and he didn’t disappoint by picking a 5-fer.

Looks like India is putting all their hopes on Pant. Imagine if he has a bad series. :vk2

India is planning on opening with KL and Padikkal at one down. What a joke.

I can see India being at 48/4 in 18 overs with Pant and Jurel fighting it out in the middle. Outside of Jaiswal, the top 4 are not good.

He is an out and out Australia killer. Missed him badly in the world cup final. We were stuck that useless KL Rahul

Shami bowled nearly 45 overs, fielded for more than 100 overs and also scored some runs. That's a good enough fitness test to be sent to Australia because you need a bowler of his calibre alongside Jasprit Bumrah
So Shami started to play? And how good was his performance.. Should've selected to BGT..

Mitchell starc should not be playing international cricket anymore. He is done at this level. He might deliver once in a blue moon but he won't perform consistently.

Indian TM is not confident of his fitness yet.so they asked him to play in a domestic t20 tournament. If everything is good,he may join for second test on Dec 6

He could be useful against tail. But nevertheless he was not effective both in 2018, 2021 even when he was at his peak.

At the same time tomorrow if india will bat first then we are likely to disscus how useless is KL after his wicket :dw

He has already won 2 ODI World Cups, 1 World T20, and 1 WTC. He has also won Ashes.

So, not much for him to achieve any more. I expect him to retire soon.

Only thing that is missing from his resume is a CT trophy.

I think Aussies have a good chance of winning CT 2025.

Rohit Sharma welcomes baby boy on Nov 16th and he's still not available for first test on Nov 22nd ? What's going on here ?

Not even possible in his dream to score a century :dw
He should score his customary century per series in sena.so we should give him only one opportunity to score a customary century and take him out by next match.win /win for both :broad

Kl scoring a century at Perth ( 0.0001% chance) means india are likely to win the test . :kp

He has habit of giving shocks to extremely pessimistic fans.i will bet on him than easwaran for this match.later on washed up rohit can replace kl and score his attacking selfless 10's or 15's.so do kohli.

With Roht not there, I think KL is gonna open for sure now. He has played a good knock in practice game recently although he failed with India A.

Predict the Lunch time score tomorrow at this time .

If india bat first 65/4
If Australia bat first 76/2 :kp

If India bats I can bet 3 wickets for sure.kl, ddp after 30 or 40 , kohli .Jurel will stay for sure . Jaiswal case will be interesting .

Aus 2 for sure.if we can get 3rd wicket, definitely it will give us another one quickly. head will have to face the bumpers before a lunch break and again after that.he won't sit back and play defensive game.

Rohit captaincy sucked off the charts against NZ. One of the reason why India was thrashed. Now Bumrah si taking over who also looked out of depth in his first Test as captain. How will he use himself as a bowler. That is going to be key. Listening to CUmmins interview he said "If Labschagne were the captain i would not have bowled this many overs". Will Bumrah over use himself?

Rohit Captaincy always suck in pressure situations as he don't have plan b.if his plan a is coming off,he will ride on it like typical 90's cronje south africa otherwise he struggles a lot.he was atrocious even against eng .one sample are 1st test 2nd innings where everything went wrong and he was clueless.another one is placing long on and long off for Anderson when target is more than 100 runs in second test second innings. Even if u see ipl, once Mumbai lost its edge over other teams due to few players departure it never recovered under his captaincy as he can decimate opponent with good resources but can't do proper utilisation of avg resources.

yes. His final wins were close wins with some magic spells. Won by 1 run, 2 runs.

I think this would be the playing 11.

Rahul, Jaiswal, Padikkal, Kohli, Pant, Jurel, Nitish, Jadeja/Ashwin, Harshit, Siraj, Bumrah

Yes most likely and Only they are thinking about which spinner they will Play. Its either Ashwin or Sundar . Jadeja is far behind now .

Even his occassional century (1 century every series) is also vanished now!

Assuming he plays all 5 tests he will score 100. Just remember this India won their first tournament in 10 years as soon as they dropped KL Rahul. In every tournament from junior level he was part of his team did not win. Not a single IPL title for him either. India achieved 2021 miracle without him as well. Having him in playing XI is such an omen. You know you are going to lose.

As per ci ,it's aswin as there are 3 left handers.but they should go with washi as he is economical and can provide batting cushion better than aswin. He took few wickets in gabba too .

My choice is Ashwin although Sundar is better batsman . We need wicket taking bowlers as they are already playing Nitish Reddy ( Not a good bowler) so Ashwin is must.

India lock in playing XI as Bumrah looks forward to series start

Bumrah confirmed India have settled on their XI that will take on Australia and is looking forward to leading the side in the absence of Rohit Sharma.

Stand-in India captain Jasprit Bumrah has provided an update on the make-up of his side's playing XI for the opening Test against Australia in Perth.

Bumrah acknowledged he will captain the team in the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma, and also confirmed that India had already settled on their XI for the crucial ICC World Test Championship contest.

The right-armer revealed the exact playing XI would not be announced until just prior to play commencing on Friday and after the toss.

"We have finalised our playing XI and you will get to know tomorrow morning before the start of the match," Bumrah said.

India enter the five-match series against Australia needing to win four matches to earn a third straight appearance in the World Test Championship Final and Bumrah said the side was well prepared for the battle for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.

While India arrived in Australia on the back of a disappointing 3-0 series whitewash against New Zealand, Bumrah believes that series loss will matter little when the action begins Down Under.

“When you win you start from zero but when you lose, then also you also start from zero. We are not carrying any baggage from India. Yes, we have our learnings from New Zealand series but those were different conditions and our results here have been different,” Bumrah said.

And while Bumrah is likely to relinquish the captaincy when Rohit eventually does arrive in Australia, the pacer said he was a big advocate of fast bowlers holding the responsibility of being skipper.

“I have always advocated for pacers being captains. They are tactically better. Pat (Cummins) has done a phenomenal job. There are a lot of models in the past as well. Kapil Dev and lot of other captains in the past. Hopefully a start of a new tradition,” Bumrah added.

Two of the best fast-bowlers in the world captaining their respective sides is good to see. Interested to see Bumrah's tactics in Australia. Fast bowlers tend to approach captaincy differently and often have a deeper understanding of the challenges that come with being a fast bowler.

Rahul, Jaiswal, Padikkal, Kohli, Pant, Jurel, Nitish, Jadeja/Ashwin, Harshit, Siraj, Bumrah
I would go with Akash Deep over Harshit Rana, who I have never seen bowl and who seems to have minimal FC experience. Ashwin should play as the sole spinner.

Yes we won T20 world cup too because thankfully he was not part of it, I can understand

Read some latest reports after pitch inspection about inclusion of both Prasidh krishna and Sundar in playing eleven.

Starc is 34.
Hazlewood is 33.
Cummins is 31.

I think they can still play for a few more years (Cummins particularly).
I don't necessarily mean age wise, but don't seem as effective as a group as once was.
