Life is about winning the ultimate battle.

You may lose some small wars on the way but your focus must always be on the big battle.

In the end it was just an inning which separates both teams but Pakistan clearly come out of 1st test in Brisbane with more answers to their questions and about their future plans than Australia, and in that sense they should be happier than Australia who only have a win on board.

The positives:-
1. Bobby is now officially a test class batsman
2. Pakistan now has a teenage pace duo
3. Rizwan is a great addition to the team and will serve the greens in all formats
4. Yasir Shah is officially the Kryptonite to Steven Smith

Azhar, Shan and Imran must be replaced in the next Test. Imam should replace Shan. Abid in for Azhar. Musa should replace Imran. And make Rizwan the Test captain. We can win the next Test for sure.

Haris needs to be replaced not Shaan.....replace Imran khan for sure jury still out on Azhar as he is captain

2nd Test

1. Imam/Abid
2. Shan
3. Azhar
4. Babar
5. Asad
6. Rizwan
7. Iftikhar
8. Yasir
9. Abbas
10. Shaheen
11. Naseem

5. They have got a solid opener in form for Shan Masood who can perform in alien conditions

Pakistan just need 1 World Class batsman to become a gun team

Maybe they should bring back Umar Akmal?

Positive:

Rizwan - Impressed with both his batting and keeping. A very good long term prospect for PCT

Negative:

Babar Azam: very disappointed with how vociferously he celebrated his personal milestone despite seeing that his team is heading towards an innings defeat.

Shows me that he's getting into that mindset where he is content with his own performance and doesn't mind his team losing embarrassingly.

Team for 2nd test should be :

01.Imam ul haq
02.Shan Masood
03.Azhar Ali (c)
04.Babar Azam
05.Asad Shafique
06.Mohammed Rizwan (wk)
07.Kashif Bhatti/Iftikhar Ahmed
08.Yasir Shah
09.Shaheen Shah Afridi
10.Naseem shah
11.Mohammad Abbas

Whilst Haris has been pathetic on this tour thus far I'd still play him ahead of Iftikhar. He's more of a wicket taking threat with the ball and a much better batsman.

What I'd go with:
Shan
Imam
Azhar
Babar
Shafiq
Haris
Rizwan
Yasir
Shaheen
Abbas
Naseem

If Misbah had picked some other decent seam options then there would be a case of just going with the 4 pacers.

I have attended every Day/Night Test at Adelaide.

It’s totally different to Brisbane.

1. Only one score over 390 in 12 innings.
2. Most team innings are 200-260.
3. There’s no reverse: wickets are taken by seam bowlers and conventional swing bowlers.
4. You need to bowl with the new ball immediately after Dinner.
5. You need quick runs so you can declare at Dinner.

These conditions are unique. Not like the pink ball at Brisbane or Perth.

Abbas is the key. And it’s a shame: if you have a geriatric quick bowler, Sohail Khan would do far better than Imran Khan.

Imam replaces Haris.
Abbas replaces Imran (but won’t - Misbah will drop Naseem).

This is where they will miss Shadab and Faheem, both for their bowling but also because if Australia declare at Dinner, Pakistan may start the next day at 70-5 but in easy batting conditions. Which is where Faheem and Shadab would have been crucial.

From Azhar’s press conference it’s clear they will drop Naseem for ABBAS rather than Imran

This is the same squad that Mickey said he'd pick for the next Test.

How is the pitch expected to play, normally with the Pink ball you expect the seamers to dominate but it's Adelaide...

Its hilarious to see faheem and shadabs name again and again. :yk
Shadab is ok and has the potential to fight it out in tests but faheem is as mediocre as they come, his batting is non existent.
A case can be made for shadab but not faheem.

Yasir has scored probably the same number of runs shadab would have scratched around for in 1st test. Junaids facination with these 2 world class all rounders is comical.

We have a long tail unfortunately.
Once we're 5 down, we're more likely than not going to make around a 100 more.

Gone with Abid over Imam, let's see what Abid can do, we might as well, Imam hasn't been great in tests so far, and maybe it helps against a collapse with a right-left combo.

Have to bank on Haris coming good despite the form. We drop him now, people are still going to want him back next series. And we don't have the quality to replace him. He's not young anymore, he can't really afford not to be playing either. Just trust he'll get over his bad patch. We don't exactly have many replacements mid order either.

Abbas in. Kashif in just because Aussies won't have worked him out, and better with the bat than Yasir.

Azhar down the order as simply he probably is too old to reliable work out at top anymore. We should probably try and attempt to create something similar to Misbah, YK down the order, and Azhar has the most experience in hitting big hundreds. Probably won't work out, Azhar probably shouldn't have been made captain when he isn't commanding a spot and might be better out of the team. Don't see much point playing a guy up who will fail at the top. Babar on the other hand I'd play him at 3, he's used to playing top order in ODIs and is the best player of pace anyway. If he scores at 3 will be more beneficial to the team as it'll stop the collapse and easier to bat around him. Him coming in at 5 or 6 scoring when his fellow batsmen are out already, just harder for him to make an impact/arrest the slide and he'll run out of suitable batting partners to form partnerships. If he's good enough to bat 3, make him bat there, especially given no one else is.

If the pitch is anything like the India vs Australia test on 6th Dec last year then scoring even 150 is going to be a challenge. The only player who survived on that pitch was Pujara & in the end, he was the one who made the difference.

Imran and abbas will be lethal in a pink ball night test.
I would drop shaheen and keep naseem, naseem can swing the ball both ways.

Pujara flopped at Perth and that was the most difficult pitch in that series,i dont pujara would have survived.

Pujara scored 525 runs in that series at an average of 75. The next was Pant with 350 runs. The closest Australian batsman couldn't even score half the number of runs that Pujara did.

I saw the match, Perth pitch wasn't as vicious as Adelaide one. Australian openers, Finch & Harris who were flopping in every match, were scoring at ease. In Adelaide, even the score of 250 by India seemed insurmountable, of which Pujara scored half of those runs.

Lol the celebration was because of the first innings shot

Pujara wouldn't have scored a century in Adelaide if DRS was taken by Australia when he was nicked off on 89.
Secondly Harris was their highest scorer,he was decent but didn't flopped .
The reason why Australia didn't scored because of inexperience (except Khawaja but he was coming back from injury plus his brother was in the jail that might affect his batting) and good bowling attack of India.

This match will be finished by 2.5 days. Both Azhar and Shafiq will keep tuktuking and fall quickly, Iftikhar is a walking wicket so as Haris. Unless Misbah's buddy Imran gives lots of runs to opposition it will not last 3 days

We can have n number of "Could haves", "Would haves", "Should haves" but, in the end, Pujara scored a century on a very vicious pitch & stood out of all the batsmen. He won applauds for a very tough innings. He scored 3 centuries in that series & practically won them the BG trophy. Harris, though not flopping, didn't score even half the number of runs that Pujara scored.

I don't think Australia became a world beating team on the sholders of just two individuals. It is their domestic structure which produces quality players & adequate bench strength. As for good Indian bowling, I am not sure if that is an issue. The fact that not a single Aussie batsmen could score a century speaks of how good & disciplined Indian bowlers were.

I don't think scores of 30's and 40's make someone a solid opener

If Pakistan pick this team with the same batting order, Pakistan will Win

Pakistan should play Abbas. Playing 2 rooky fast bowlers against Australia, in Australia seldom works. 140+ is not a challenge for their batsman. The senior bowler Imran Sr. could be useful in a day night test.

some reports say that musa might replace naseem shah for this test.

i hope that is not true, as that would be a horrible mistake. adelaide is the place naseem will be at his lethal best.

I also do not rate musa highly. naseem is definitely out if musa is making his debut, as yasir sha will not be replaced. And removing iftikhar would significantly weaken the batting.

Naseem will be playing as per reports. And musa is also under consideration but whom he may replace shaheen/imran is not clear. And also reports suggesting abbas might have a crack too. So its definitely between abbas and musa replacing imran

No, there are rumors that Ifti has been made a role model in the dressing room all of a sudden which is causing fair amount of disturbance.

So disappointed that it's going to rain nearly all day on Friday, sunday and potentially monday but forecasts do change so let's hope we get the full 5 days in.

Misbah at his best ruining team chemistry as usual..

Ifti isnt even 1/5 the player babar is...

Can u elaborate please

Sounds dubious.

However, I did see an interview of a couple of the players recently (maybe during the SL series, or perhaps the T20Is in Australia) and the two guys were asked who the funniest person is in the dressing room - they said it's Iftikhar, despite his apparent serious demeanour. :ifti

Imran won’t be lethal even on a green mamba

Atrocious bowler

Doesn’t make any sense if they just brought him for 1 innings work load in 2 match series

Bowling wise imran was awful not 140+ rookie bowlers

I hope Pakistan plays Abas this time around and Australia gets to bat first. That would be Pakistan’s best shot.

Imam should play this test.

My team:

Imam, Shan, Azhar, Babar, Haris, Shafiq, Rizwan, Musa, Shaheen, Abbas, Naseem

4 man pace attack is the way to go. We want to win this test. NOT draw. WE should be attacking. We need 4 pace men alongside Haris's + Azhar's spin if required.

I don't like starting threads so will just ask here. Are we not playing anyone between the visit of Sri Lanka next month and us touring England in July 2020? Imran Khan jnr and even Naseem Shah both have to go for sure. This IK jnr whenever I have seen him never impresses me at all. Abbas has to come in where as Yasir offering an alternative should be retained. I got a feeling that Imam will come in for Shaan even though he did well in the recent Test.

We are playing Bangladesh for 2 tests in January.

But the challenge is nothing new for Hough, who was faced with an even tougher assignment in 2015.

Just six days before Test cricket's first day-night match was played at Adelaide Oval, more than 52,000 fans crammed into the ground to watch another legendary rock band, AC/DC, play. Hough and his team had just five days to drop in a wicket and turn around the ground for Test match cricket, which he did successfully.

It's therefore no surprise that the only evidence a rock concert was hosted at the venue eight days ago is a slight grass discolouration where the stage was.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Hough said: "I wouldn't say U2 made it difficult (to prepare). It's obviously challenging being a multipurpose venue but everything has come up well.

"The outfield you almost can't tell where the stage was. It's recovered extremely well, we're really happy with it."

Hough added that he is expecting a typical Adelaide Oval wicket, which is renowned for offering something to all parties; swing early, turn later and reward for batsmen who get themselves in.

"The pitch is tracking nicely," he said. "Hopefully it's just a normal Adelaide Oval pitch.

"The preparation has obviously been a little bit challenging but we're happy with where it's at and we're hoping for a good contest.

"The pitch went in on Thursday morning and we've done the usual preparation. It's got a nice cover of grass on it and it's a little bit courser in a few spots.

"We've managed it well, we're trying to do what we've done over the past four years so nothing has changed much there. We'll find out I suppose over the course of the game if it plays the same or not."

Langer drops selection hint for second Test

Coach Justin Langer expects Australia to field an unchanged XI for the second Domain Test in Adelaide as his side looks to build on their crushing win at the Gabba last week.

Pacemen Michael Neser and James Pattinson as well as batsman Cameron Bancroft are all part of Australia’s squad in Adelaide having missed out in Brisbane, and Langer expects the trio to miss again.

“The boys all played well (in Brisbane), they had a day off having finished in four days,” he said today.

“We haven’t had a look at the wicket yet, we’ll make sure they get through training today.

“But my gut feel is we’ll probably go with the same XI.”

Pattinson, who was not available for the first Test due to suspension, was today named in Victoria’s squad for their Marsh Sheffield Shield match against NSW, pending him being released from the Test squad.

Langer can enjoy the luxury of taking a settled side into the second Test after his batsmen fired at the Gabba to quieten any selection speculation about the make-up of his top six.

Apart from Steve Smith, the only batsman who didn’t post a sizeable score at the Gabba was Travis Head, who scored 24 having come to the crease with Australia already flying at 4-468 in their only innings.

“It’s often a really hard time to come into bat,” Langer said of Head, who will play his second Test in front of his home crowd.

“But I was impressed (because) he was sharp, he was busy, he played well and got a pretty unlucky dismissal down the leg side.

“One of the reasons we selected him in the squad is we knew the second Test was in Adelaide.

“We all know he’s a great young bloke, he’s a very good young player and hopefully he does well this week.

“There’s no reason he shouldn’t. He’s in good nick.”

Having been overlooked for the fifth Ashes Test earlier this year in favour of allrounder Mitchell Marsh, Head made a slow start to the home summer but secured a Test return on the back of his deeds in his most recent match at his home ground.

Against a NSW attack featuring Test bowlers Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon at the Adelaide Oval earlier this month, Head posted 109 in a low-scoring match, his 11th first-class century and his fourth this year having followed his maiden Test ton against Sri Lanka last February with two in the UK during the northern summer.

The second Test is a day-night affair that starts at 2pm local time on Friday.

History shows Australia will still take a pink-ball advantage to the Adelaide Oval despite going in without a proper day-night warm-up match against Pakistan.

Australian players have traditionally featured in a pink-ball Sheffield Shield round in weeks leading up to the day-night Test, aiding preparations.

However that has been missing for the past two seasons, with the majority of Australian players having not faced a pink ball since January.

Pakistan, in comparison, had a day-night match in Perth a fortnight ago, where their bowlers wreaked havoc with the pink ball against Australia A.

"When I was coaching Western Australia it was always nice to play day-night Shield games as well, but scheduling is such a complex issue," Australia's coach Justin Langer said.

"We see that in so many ways internationally and domestically I am sure if we could have fitted one in we would have.

"It is what it is, we will get on with it and play cricket."

History however suggests Australia haven't had previous trouble adapting.

They've played the most pink-ball cricket of any nation, with their five Test matches two more than any other nation has played under lights.

Australia are also unbeaten in all of those, having had the advantage of playing each of them at home with three in Adelaide and two at the Gabba.

Steve Smith has scored the most runs of any Australian facing the pink ball with 405 at 50.62, despite revealing this week he has trouble seeing it.

Pakistan captain Azhar Ali meanwhile holds the record for the most day-night runs, with the majority coming in a Dubai Test against the West Indies in 2016.

Australia had their first training session under lights at the Adelaide Oval on Wednesday.

"The one thing about the modern day cricketer is they have got to adapt to a red ball, a pink ball, a white ball," Langer said.

"They have got to adapt to Test cricket, four day cricket, one day cricket, T20 cricket, the best players are able to do that.

"It's not just the pink ball, it's very different playing at the Gabba as it is playing at Adelaide Oval.

"We pride ourselves on being the best prepared team in the world and that doesn't just happen in the nets and leading up to it.

"We've got amazing data now, so we know exactly the lengths that we want to be hitting ,we know how most dismissals occur at the Adelaide Oval."

Australia will take an unchanged XI in the second Test against Pakistan in Adelaide, which begins tomorrow. (Source Cricket.Com.Au Twitter)

Legendary ex-Australia captain Allan Border has controversially suggested dropping popular off-spinner Nathan Lyon for the second Test against Pakistan at the Adelaide Oval.

Lyon finished with match figures of 2-114 from 38 overs as Justin Langer's side thumped the tourists by an innings-and-five-runs inside four days in the series opener Brisbane.

Pace trio Mitchell Starc (seven wickets), Josh Hazlewood (six) and Pat Cummins (five) all feasted on the Pakistan batsmen in Brisbane.

And with Victoria quick James Pattinson eligible to return from a one-match ban for making a homophobic slur during a Sheffield Shield match earlier this month, Border believes selectors should consider deploying an all-pace attack for the day-night clash.

“The only thing I would maybe consider is going in with four quickies,” Border told the Follow On podcast.

“It’s a big leave, leaving Nathan Lyon out but that would be one thing I would consider just because of the nature of the (pink-ball) game, it'll be a pretty grassy surface over there in Adelaide.

“It just seems to me that the faster men are the guys who get the wickets over there.”

The 32-year-old off-spinner has been a regular in the Australia XI since making playing the first of his 92 Tests in 2011.

And coach Justin Langer allayed the fears of Lyon’s army of fans, all-but confirming the hosts will name an unchanged side after an emphatic victory over Pakistan in the first Test at the Gabba.

“We haven’t had a look at the wicket yet, we’ll make sure they get through training today,” Langer said on Wednesday.

“But my gut feel is we’ll probably go with the same XI.”

So disappointed that it's going to rain nearly all day on Friday, sunday and potentially monday but forecasts do change so let's hope we get the full 5 days in.

There won't be much rain to disrupt play significantly on Friday or Saturday. Sunday will have some issues.

What's this I hear about Naseem Shah getting dropped for Musa? Are they out of their minds, or are they hiding an injury from coming out in the media?
