Justin Fashanu was the last openly gay footballer and he tragically committed suicide. He received relentless crowd abuse and was maliciously ribbed by his teammates for being gay. This was more than two decades ago.

Cricket in Australia, like football in England, is the national game, and it’s very possible that there is still just as much (if not more than) homophobia in Australia as there is over here. Which is why Faulkner has retracted on his tipsy Freudian slip.

It's not uncommon in most western countries for fully grown men that are financially do well to still have roommates/housemates, it's not cause he "can't afford a place", some people prefer the social aspect of having somebody around. Homophobia will always exist in every society because it is against the natural order of mankind. If everyone becomes gay, the human species will become extinct. The vast majority will always be heterosexual to ensure the survival of our race. It is our instinct.

As far as Pakistan and India are concerned, I highlighted these two countries because they have a greater population than all other cricket nations combined, and both countries have a long, long way to go when it comes to tackling discrimination against homosexuals.

It is not easy for any mainstream cricketer to come out because it is inevitable that he will be subjected to abuse and criticism, especially from people in these two countries.
