Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Shaharyar Khan said on Wednesday that Misbah-ul-Haq will decide his future as captain even if the team loses badly.

“We have requested Misbah to continue until 2018 and even if the result in Australia is not good the decision will be of Misbah’s,” said Shaharyar Khan, adding that if he leaves then the best option will be to have one captain for all formats as it suits our culture.

“If he decides to leave then we have a few options like we can elevate vice captain Azhar Ali, Younis Khan can be one option but since he is not scoring runs he will be under pressure. ”Sarfraz is one option as he has an aggressive style and our culture also suits one captain for all formats.” said Khan.

Khan admitted Azhar Ali had lost confidence after a 4-1 one-day defeat in England.

“Yes, I can share with you that a lot of people lost confidence in Azhar after that series, even Mickey Arthur’s vote was with Sarfaraz but after whitewashing West Indies Azhar has become stronger,” said Khan.

When asked if PCB shows weakness in not replacing an unsuccessful captain, Khan said, “it is a matter of confidence and honouring them and not a matter of weakness by the PCB.”

Khan said appointing captain will be his prerogative. “I will consult the selection committee especially the chief selector but the final decision will be mine.”

Khan will be leaving for Colombo on Thursday to attend an Asian Cricket Council meeting but he doesn’t expect any top BCCI official to attend.

“Since they have a big decision from Lodha Commission in the next few days I don’t expect any top official to come to Colombo,” said Khan, reiterating his stance that it’s still Pakistan’s turn to host India.”

“We have that stance that India has to tour us first. There were slots made for Pakistan-India series in the MoU signed in 2014, and they have wasted one slot by not playing us in 2015, even after agreeing to a neutral venue other than UAE.”

Khan said although the situation is not conducive for an Indo-Pak match but things can change quickly, and if they do then cricket will be one of the most popular things on the agenda.

What is wrong with this oldie

I'm against Azhar's captaincy as much as the next guy but why come out in the media and say that the coach wanted Sarfaraz as captain. What would be Azhar's morale now?

Man we are truly blessed with some of the worst technocrats and bureaucrats to ever walk on God's green earth.

Shehryar saab seems to have forgotten everything he learnt in his diplomatic days.

SK what are you doing??

Why publicly announce that the captain's CURRENT coach DOESN'T want him as the captain?

Where's LOGIC and aqal?

Feel so bad for Azhar tbh.

Regardless of how you feel about him personally, hes carried himself well since the captaincy, has performed OK in my view and ahead of an already tough task he gets completely sold out and thrown under a bus by his own chairman.

An idiotic interview for several reasons. Doesn't just screw Azhar over it harms Sarfaraz as well. If he flops people have grounds (thanks to this interview) to accuse him of playing poorly deliberately to get the captaincy since its all but confirmed he's getting it now.

Seriously, only the PCB would say that player A is a failure and player B far more suitable for captaining, only to head into a series vs the world champions with player A as captain and expected to get on with player B.

Staggeringly unprofessional.

I dont feel bad for Azhar at all. He is not cut out to be a captain the PCB knows it. They should drop him from ODI's and give the captaincy to Sarfraz.

THere is nothing wrong with what Sheryar said.

Just because for recent years our board doesn't talk like this doesnt mean what they do or act is wrong.

THe players already know what happens behind the scene, nothing wrong in releasing this info.

Shorter version: Since SK's opinions are same as mine, everything is ok here. nothing to see, move along"

You know what I don't mind this. Our players are shameless and need to be scolded publicly. SK clearly stated after the disastrous England series, Azhar was given the chance to resign BUT he refused and decided to carry on with his lame and pathetic captaincy.

SK also said it's hard for the PCB to sack him after a 3-0 win against WI. Why can't the Pakistani players realize their own limitations and save themselves from humiliation embarrassing their country.

Azhar should have resigned after the England series and I'm sure it wasn't rocket science to figure out that the coach wasn't in favor of him continuing either. So why not resign?

But I agree. The timing from SK is horrendous to say the least. Maybe he should have said this after the drubbing Azhar is going to receive in Australia.

There was a debate on TV recently with Inzi and some guy I didn't know. The latter said Shahryar Khan needs to stop going to the media over and over again, and is showing his age with the ignorance.

I think he was spot on tbh.

Absolute baffoons these lot at the PCB.
Was this guy really a career diplomat?
Unbelievable!

No man deserves to be publicly humiliated. You may not agree with Azhar's methods (and neither do I) but this is beyond pathetic to disrespect an individual in this manner.

SK is the freaking chairman of the board, if he didn't want Azhar as captain any longer why is he asking Azhar to make the decision of hanging on or leaving. Why can't SK be man enough to DEMAND a resignation.

He himself is pathetic and now dragging Azhar through the mud just because AA didn't comply with his request.

This is what you get when you have men of ZERO character running the show. Men of integrity do not fall over like this.

Career diplomat being undiplomatic.

Seriously poor comments by the chairman.

Demotivating for Azhar. Awkward for Sarfraz. Last thing that Mickey wants to be revealed.

There is a common sayings, " when people grow old, they become like baby again !!! "

Same thing happened to this old guy!! He doesn't know anymore what to say & what not to or where to say!!
As a chairman you can't or shouldn't go to public to say all these!!!

Terrible comments. Azhar is barely hanging on and Mr. Shahryar is not helping his cause with such words.

He will surely be given the marching orders if we lose the ODI series 5-0 or 4-1, which we probably will.

I feel so sorry for Mickey Arthur.

He has conducted himself professionally and told the chairman his honest opinion in confidence, and now the chairman just blabs it out.

And the batsman who feels undermined is the Test opener with a tricky innings ahead of him today!

The fact that he said it at all is wrong enough, he should keep his mouth shut.

Sk should have kept his mouth shut, if he doesn't have confidence in Azhar tha sack him instead of giving him the opition to resign.Azhar will be gone after the Australia tour it if we lose heavily 4-1/5-0 which is likely.

Absolutely terrible decision making on the eve of Pakistan's toughest challenge.

Perhaps more pertinent is the fact that sarfaraz's test average has taken a nose dive from 47 to 41 - so much for making him captain in all formats

Because he hasn't faced Sri Lankan spinners in UAE for a while now so it's understandable why his average has dipped down.

He seems to have improved in LO but struggled in tests recently. Sarfarz temperament in tests recent matches has been questionable

Pak cricket has always been plagued with infighting and we hear our very own chairman make statements like these.

He is meant to help keep the dressing room tightly knit and together, but comments like this will only create tension among peers.

Why say something like this in public? All it does is create an awkward situation in the dressing room and put more pressure on the azhar

Well, after 5-0 in AUS; PCB should call ZIMBOKs for a 3 match Series - people will get their confidence back on Azhar - then CT2017, backed by another ODI Series with Afghans, then SAF tour, after that the return tour of ZIM ........... it's about losing & regaining confidence - till Azhar's retirement time comes.

Exactly. How would Azhar feel just hours before such an important test series. This is awful stuff. Just shut up and sack him after this test series

Azhar will pay for this ODI captaincy - those who can appoint him as ODI captain on Test performance, can easily drop him from Test team for ODI failure. There are few who eventually had paid the penalty for the little favor of being selected in a format which they don't deserve. Ramiiz, Md. Wasim, Nazir, Malik, KAkmal, Ahmed, Taufique, Rehman .......

i think the chairman should issue a show cause notice to the chairman and slap a gagging order on himself. and then do a press release to tell everyone what he has done.

Not being funny but a loose tongue is a sign of old age!

Untimely and out of character from SK

apologies for the disagreement but i would argue its entirely in character and has been for years. he, like the rest of the board, should never have been appointed. they are the ones to blame for the disaster that has been pakistani cricket in the past couple of decades.

So shahryar is lobbying to fire Azhar when he can just do that? He is just playing politics building consensus in the media - pathetic - pathetic.

Finally Mickey understands what stupidity that is PCB he has got himself into.

Hadh hai bhai. Whats wrong with him, he wasnt like this before. He is coming up with gem after gem.

At 80+ man becomes like a child.Shocking statement considers that the guy has diplomatic experience.

I'm lost for words, you don't publicly announce stuff like that to the media  And yes I'm praying Azhar gets sacked for good.

Hadh hai bhai. Whats wrong with him, he wasnt like this before. He is coming up with gem after gem.

Seems to be in a competition with another PCB official, to make the most ridiculous statement to the media.

He is trying to create a ground to sack Azhar without backlash. It would have been so smooth had Azhar stepped down himself on personal grounds, which would have kept his ODI door open. Now, poor guy might be dropped from ODI squad. Not a good day for Azhar - could have got Smith's priced wicket as well.

Unprofessional at best, darn right damaging for the team at worst.

Maybe these guys need to go on courses to learn about tact/diplomacy etc.

Pakistan cricket. Perennially the bedrock of unprofessionalism and media-chasing.

Finally better sense prevails to pak management. People in pakpassion seems to me more intelligent than management people. I suggestions to pak board do read suggestion form this forum

Unprofessionalism of the highest order.

If a player had done this there would be a showcause notice. What will happen here - nothing.

Incredible. How come a person mental level of a kid become head of a such a big organisation? Thank you Nawaz Sharif. Thank you Najam Sethi. Thank you dirty politics of Pakistan.

This guy shouldn't be anywhere near small organisation and we are talking about running a cricket board. Really losing patience with this guy.

I'm actually favor of Azhar staying as a ODI captain now. It would be unfair to remove him after he is stamping his authority in test as a best test batsman meaning next Test captain and also doing wonderful against WI his last ODI series as captain.

for a change he has made some good changes in ODI team like playing likes of Baber at 3 which worked. I think with time he will develop into a very good captain but as a player he is also improving. Need to give him chance. I would take him any day over Sarfraz.

It didn't work with Taufique, Malik, Nazir, Asad or Afridi - ODI/T20 mindset are totally different from Test. PAK has done that that mistake several times.

When it comes to Captaincy, I won't back Azhar as Captain with Kohli or AB like stats - he is not made for taking instant decisions. But, he can stay in ODI squad as an option, just like Asad should also be considered for AUS ODI for the batting form he is in now.

Shehryar says PCB were considering removing Azhar from the captaincy after England series but Azhar wanted to continue.

Yet from September:

“Azhar Ali is a good captain and he is striving to lead the team well. But it is clear that we are not going to remove him as a captain instead we will give him time to improve his captaincy and get better results. Azhar is not just the main reason behind the defeats, instead each and every player of the team is equally responsible for the series of team losses."

http://www.pakpassion.net/ppforum/sh...-Shahryar-Khan

This is what you call CYA from Shehryar saab.

Conveniently say publicly PCB wanted to remove him in the summer but Azhar didn't want to quit so you can throw him under the bus when results are inevitably poor vs Australia.

Since when is it the captain's decision anyway to stay or leave - the PCB makes that call and for all of Shehryar saab's public "doubts about Azhar" - YOUR board appointed him as ODI captain in the first place !

Where were those doubts then ?!

He is not captaincy material, better to give it to Sarfaraz and for Azhar to just play as a player.

Azhar may not be a great captain but this guy SHK is surely too incompetent to run a cricket board.

Azhar Ali spoke about Shahryar Khan statements

"I respect Shahryar Khan a lot."

"I didn't let his remarks put pressure on me."

"I always try to concentrate on my game the most."

"I always try to grab the opportunity and perform whenever there's a chance."

"I like to keep things simple. I just focused on the Test series as that's our biggest task."

"Regardless of what happens off the field, I will always try to concentrate on my game."

im not sure why anyone is surprised. sheryar is a liar. he proved that pretty much in the ovalgate situation and its easily visible in the autobiographies of akhtar and shehryar. not only was he incompetent then, and was unceremoniously booted out because he was a disaster and had no idea who to hire for what purpose, but in true pcb style he attempted to throw inzi under the bus for the oval fiasco, and his own failings as chairman, in his autobiography.

akhtar, who has very publicly had no love lost with inzi and has been vocal in his spats with him, went out of his way to defend inzi and correctly place the blame for the oval at shehryar's feet.

theres a reason why sethi had this impotent puppet propped up on the chairman's seat. it seems as per sethis's usual lack of professionalism, that he forgot to turn the volume down to prevent him vomiting these idiotic press statements every other day.

Very Well Spoken Azhar :14: Becoming an absolute fan of him with each passing day, even though I disagree with his on field captaincy tactics my respect for this bloke that just quadrupled during the last year or so.

If there ever was a role model of hard work for young up coming batsmen in Pakistan, Azhar Ali is your man.

The last bit is a proper egg on the faces of many superstars who have represented us over the last 3 decades and shows what a thorough professional he is !!

Azhar has gradually became my favorite Test player, but I've never liked him as a captain though as a player he has been consistent, even then right before the series its as a foolish statement by SHK is it can get, these 90+ year olds dont have the capacity to run their family how can they run a Cricket Board!

When a man without any personality, quality and diplomacy is running the cricket board a top cricket nation, you can sense the condition of the operation of that cricket board.

SarfRaz has had a very ordinary series behind the stumps and has also faded with the bat. I assume ppl would rather be captain than Azhar because he is vocal on the field?

Shahryar should have had a showcause issued to him for such comments in public. Unprofessional top to bottom.

Shahryar should issue show-cause notice to himself.

Well done to Azhar for responding in a dignified way. Unlike the elder statesman.

Despite the remarks, To come out and perform like this in the series is commendable.

Needs to make it count in ODIs now and carry his form.
